Proud owner of a new Galaxy III, but not so happy about the connection speeds. I live near Trinity University in the heart of San Antonio.
When I am in CDMA only mode, the phone connects at 800Kbps - 1 Mbps. When I switch to CDMA/LTE mode and reboot the phone, the connection speed ranges between 58Kbps (not a typo) and about 1100 Kbps. The 3G/4G light stays on 3G, though I briefly saw a flash of 4G.
What the heck is up with this? I upgraded to the phone partly because of the press coverage that attended the LTE roll-out in San Antonio. Is this a software problem? Is it a coverage problem?
If anyone else in Central San Antonio can post their connection speeds, I would be grateful. Also, if there is anything I can do to *force* the phone into 4G mode, that would be good to know.
Thanks!
Aaron
Your best next step is to apply the new LG8 update OTA from Sprint and see if that performs any better.
I feel your pain. I live and work in the stone oak area and have been disappointed in the LTE coverage and connection issues.
Check out this website though for a little clarification.

I can't even connect to 4g today in most areas I have been and inside home. I only saw 4g I've today briefly while traveling in town =(

Yes, I've yet to get LTE speeds above 2Mbps in San Antonio. I've tried all the way by 1604/Bandera all the way to 90/Gen McMullen Blvd. But to be fair, San Antonio is only like 15% rolled out.

Yes, that's why I suggested installing the OTA update and retesting. The update is supposed to help with the threshold problem that S4GRU's analysis identified.

Absolutely. The radio alone helps. I wonder though if it has anything to do with San Antonio having so many hills and changes in altitude? Either way, cn is correct. S.A. only has 15% complete but that is prolly more like 20% now. When LTE does connect, it is no joke.
Average 20down and 12up.
I'm still locked out my home tower for LTE. But this was post update it started happening, sucks I can't test out the new radio lol

Hellz jes baby San Antonio here, I work off 151 and Wiseman got a buddy with sprint Evo lte and 1with gsiii I really believe its not the radio as much as it is towers and sprints coverage, they get spoty coverage all over the 210..
I got ATT lte is blazing hope they get that fixed ASAP I'm tired all ways letting them use my hotspot lol

Hi folks -- I have been meaning to circle back to correct my original posting. Although LTE reception is not very good inside my house, it is fantastic in most other parts of San Antonio. I have checked in Olmos Park, in the Quarry, in the Rim, etc., and have consistently seen 4G speeds above 10Mbps. Usually, it is closer to 15Mbps. There are some dead spots when data services drop out completely, but -- for the most part -- it is a strong and powerful signal.
Since I'm always quick to give Sprint (and other providers) grief when their service is lacking, I want to make sure I give them credit where credit is due. This phone and the new LTE network are super fast.
Thanks!
Aaron

Thanks for the update. Out of curiosity, have you installed Sprint's OTA update to v LG8? It is supposed to include more "optimized" LTE connection software. The previous versions (LG2 and below) were believed to set the threshold for LTE signal strength too high, so it was difficult to get and keep an LTE connection. This would only magnify problems caused by the relatively thin tower coverage in newly launched LTE markets such as San Antonio, Houston, etc.
Just picked up the phone. I'm looking good on 4g at I10 and De Zavala

My 4g inside my house on first floor also sucks but verizon 4g also sucked at my house. In fact verizon dropped occasional calls and I needed to get a network extender. Sprint's network will get better but will probably need lte phone in the future to take advantage of it.
Try the wimax tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1265990&page=6

Yes, it sucks but the $10 premium is even for smartphones that do not have 4G.
Sprints 3g speeds have been pretty bad. Anyone I meet on other carriers have like 3mbps while mine has like 1mbps. One bar of 4g signal and I am at 3mbps, two or three bars and I am at 6mbps or more.
Sprint 4g works pretty well for me up and down the east coast anyway in major cities. I travel a lot and spend a lot of time in airports and hotels near airports. The only place I find Sprint to kind of suck is oddly New York.
I had T-mobile which worked most places but their service sucked for speed especially at my home, solid bars but only .4 Mbps with whereas I get 1 Mbps 3g and 8 Mbps 4G with Sprint. Almost as fast as my Comcast cable internet.
Anyway YMMV. Probably VZW is the "best" but their data plans suck with 2Gb limit and they're expensive as hell with poor customer service. Instead of complaining how about doing a little research, ask friends, and take advantage of the trial period and figuring out which works best for you in your area.

You should be able to get over 1mbps if Verizon has 3G in your area
Thanks. Where don't they have 3g network? lol.
Anybody ever do any side by side speed tests with other devices? I ran a test with three E4GTs, an EVO 4G and an EVO 3D. Both EVO's cleared over a meg d/l while all three E4GTs (including mine) barely broke 200 kb/s. Sprint needs to get their network up to snuff no doubt but I think there is also something going on with the hardware/firmware of our phones too. I spent an hour on the phone with Sprint and Samsung today about it (of course they weren't able to help and played dumb).
For a while I was pulling my hair out, and updating prls, having Sprint reset my account and reprovisioning my phones.
E4GT, Optima S, Evo 4G and hacked Droid Incredible all scored the same pathetic sub 100Kbs in my area. I ran again at 5am and all of them managed above 1Mbps. Just over loaded towers in my area. Its worse since the Iphone.
I guess Anaheim Hills, CA is unaffected. My speeds have been great.
The Evo3d received a network service update a couple days ago and a lot of people who received it said they are getting better 3g speeds all of a sudden. Just check the second link I posted up on this thread. So comparing an Evo3d to anything might not be fair at the moment. All depending on your area that is. I received a network service update on my girl's Evo3d and it still gets the same 3g speeds as my ET4g. Just average speeds in my area. Here's the link explaining network changes in the Bay area.

Maybe they gave in and just gave it the ENG radio. When I had my E3D and I flashed the leaked eng radio (I forget the version number) my speeds were anywhere from 30-60% faster. It might have affected battery life, but, who knows...battery life sucked on that thing regardless.
I always found it strange that every radio update just seemed to make it go slower and slower...I think Sprint was up to something...
So Android Police had reported they were speaking with Sprint techs for the last few weeks and were being told upgrades are happening and we will start seeing improvements coming Oct. 31st. Of course everyone was doubting that and thought it was just more BS from Sprint.
Well low and behold Android Police starting to run speed checks after the 31st and are seeing huge improvements. Figured I would give it a shot this morning, not expecting much and ran a speed test on 3G. I have been getting about 50kbps average for the past few months and was expecting to see the same. Well I be darned, my SGS2 is testing over 1Mbps over 3g! Holy Cow!!!!!!!!! After running about 10 tests it never dropped below 800kpbs.

I am not far from RDU airport right now....Also tested it while driving in Western Cary and got great speeds there as well.
Since we got walloped by the freak nor' easter' in New England I have been on 00001.PRL...I switched before the power went out 'cuz I know that when power went out after Hurricane Irene Sprint's towers lasted barely an hour before 1X roaming...and if I'm going to roam I might as well do it at full 3G.
I check in on Sprint every now and then and the towers just aren't on. I haven't checked again yet, but, I can't even get calls through to my friends on Sprint right now...texts barely make it out and are frequently delivered anywhere from late to very late.
I sure hope we see some upgrade progress soon...my speeds are worse than abysmal. I'll report back if I notice anything.

Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I've never actually speed tested, but 4g is fast enough to surf and email to your liking, while with edge your loading a page, sitting down able to look around a bit and then its finish loading. So yes, I dread whenever I get edge. However, I have no idea how fast Sprint speeds are.
San Francisco has one of the worst reception areas for almost all carriers. Data connection always drops too in my past experience and I use to frequent SF a lot. AT&T was by far the worst in the bay area. back with G2, I was maybe getting 5mbps around L.A. but SF was about 2mbps. upload 1mbps in both region. Tmobile have horrible upload speed but, in my experience, best download speed.
For a cellphone, I don't need upload speed much so I'm happy with the faster DL speed. too much ping to game and stuff with it.

Sprint 3g right now is about the same. I wait a little bit and then the page will start to slowly show bits and pieces and then its done. With wimax on my evolution 3d pages loads instantly. 3g right now is averaging .4mbps. Earlier at a friends house in south San Jose I was getting .2mbps. I was trying to download 1.2mb app and it took about a minute. So if I were to dl a larger file I'd be in trouble.

In my home in San Jose I can barely get a signal and I'm constantly going on Edge. I live in a 2 story home with regular drywall walls. Edge for me is way worse as I'm only getting .02 - .04 mbps and web browsing is non existent. If I open up maps, I get gps lock but the map is just grid and it stays like that for a long time. Eventually map will show up but once I zoom out I get grids again. Texting takes forever to send. Phone calls will sometimes cut in and out. Majority of the time I get 1 bar and sometimes zero. Even at 3 bars edge is awful. My bed is by the window so I guess the area were I live just sucks. I may just have to go back to my evo 3d which I was getting good wimax and phone signal.

lol not really
There's actually a website out there that shows every single tower out there (or the majority of it) including location, owner, etc.
Can't be pressed to find it but it's out there and if you find it then you can check around you for any towers. It's interesting seeing how much towers from multiple carriers are spread out around your area.

So after years of being curious as to where the towers where for my sprint service, but never curious enough to actually try to find it, after reviewing my sprint bill I saw the link on the sprint page about service issue and location of towers.
I thought you guys may find this site useful. Those of you on sprint and having network issue.

Chalk up another one to your group of not aware people. I knew the coverage map but not this tower locator. Pretty helpful to be able to verify the drop zones of Sprint. So helpful I'm going to put a bookmark on my home screen to ease my frustration. Unlimited data takes the pain off the bite whenever my phone isn't working because of data loss.
Neat, thanks for this didn't know about it. My service blows  check out 97501

My house is just a bit North of the center of that map. I get 6 bars, but cap out at 20KB/S.
Usually I get 6 or less. Thank God for wifi.
Thanks for sharing. I got two towers about less than 1 mile away. Lol. I get 4-6 bars with.....

Old result list, but these were taken with 6 bars in the center of those 3 towers on the map.

Ironically, those were typical speeds in Phoenix until recently.

Folks - read the legend carefully. It appears that map only shows towers that are, or will be upgraded.
If you switch views to 'show coverage area' you end up with Sprints 'optimistic color map showing coverage just about everywhere (eg a lie); yet even that map chooses to indicate some new and future towers.
In summary, I don't think there's a view that comprehensively shows all towers, let alone distinguishing which towers have 4G coverage.
If I'm missing something or someone knows of an alternative site, please let me know.

I somehow can connect to 4g in my area, even though sprint says there is no 4g in my area. 12084
Mine is 78109 however, what is shows and what I get are two totally different things, I should be rocking but half the time my 3G is faster and more reliable than my 4G. I know they are in the proccess of removing a lot of the WiMax in my area and replacing them with LTE.
This can't include any other company's towers. I live in 48189, and get pretty good service 2-3 bars (not great, but servicable) , but my brother lives in 48350 and gets garbage, but has more towers that are closer, and has only 0-1 bars.
If you are in a non deployed market and get wimax then you're connecting to a protection Site. These are just there to fulfill fcc build out requirements and will not be upgraded like most wimax sites
As of now. Clear wire is reportedly upgrading wimax Site backends to support tdlte. If you get wimax in a launched market then you'll probably get Clear wire tdlte.
