So called Gorilla Glass

To clear rumors or to be very specific!
I took off my t-mobile screen protector yesterday and to day discovered a deep scratch on the "gorilla glass"...
To be very clean. Im very very verrrryy careful with my electronics and never damaged any in anyway! But its how how people say you can stratch it with keys or pens or put it in a bad with bolts and screws and the glass wont be scratched.
It false advertisement because i had my vibrant in an empty pocket fresh dry cleaned too! no dust and anything inside to cut it.
I had many average phones where i only got a tiny scratch on the screen from the phone falling from my hand after 2yrs of use and landing on concrete...
its funny how this glass gets scratched up very deeply without being dropped or scrapped at! and its a scratch for sure because when i move my thumb on it pressed i can feel the sharp line of the scratch on my thumb
Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, maybe only euro galaxy S phones have the gorilla glass... because this sure doesnt!
So for those who want to go naked!!! DOOOOOONT! buy a screen protector!

man... although a simple glass wont scratch with nothing in your pocket..

I've been using my vibrant for about three weeks now and have no scratches, only some marks on the battery cover.

The samsung vibrant does indeed have gorilla glass. Just because it has gorilla glass doesn't mean its un -scratchable. It just means it's more resistant than regular glass...if you don't mind me asking...what did you have in your pockets? A machete? A light saber?!...I kid, I kid...the morale of this story is, get a screen protector, prevent your vibrant from getting scathed by a light saber!

whether it has Gorilla glass or not, this is the FIRST phone that ended up with deep scratch only after a month of use.
I really dont care, i got it replaced and finally bought screen protector that i really like. (anti glare and anti fingerprint)

People should seriously invest into realook, it's only ten bucks and you won't even know it's on. But don't take my word for it or the other hundred posts here on xda that claim the same thing.

Have you seen any video's posted, I'm interested n anti-glare and anti-fingerprint but with the realooks you can't really tell its on style. I know, it's probably a lot to ask for.

with anti-glare and anti-fingerprint you will always tell that its there. i personally dont like reflective screens or screen protectors so my anti-glare and anti-fingerprint work great.

lol. this phone isn't fragile, you must have done something. no way the phone got scratched being in a pocket with nothing else in it. unless you walked that pocket into the corner of a desk or something...
my phone's been without screen protector or case since release with no scratches or blemishes.

+1 not a scratch.

Real Gorilla Glass takes alot to scratch. The ZuneHD is known to have the Gorilla Glass. My ZuneHD has been naked since the day I brought it and today it is still scratch free. It is possible our Samsung Vibrant does not have the Gorilla Glass as part of carrier modification to cu cost. who knows.

Interesting post...I'm actually a screen protector freak and have ordered multiple brands of screen protectors for the Vibrant (actually even Galaxy S just to try it...) so I'm all FOR screen protectors...best one so far is from Korea.
About your scratch...unless there's a scratch fairy, there is SOMETHING that caused that scratch. It may be foreign to you because you may not have known when it happened...It's highly possible someone else without your knowledge was the cause of it. Scratches just don't appear out of thin air...
Bottom line...the glass on the Samsung is solid...very solid...I've dropped my phone before so I know first hand how durable the glass is...it's some tough $#!t....

Its just the way of the world. If you put a screen protector on, soon after you take it off your will get scratched.
If you put it in a case, soon after you take it off you'll drop your phone. Call it karma, or just dumb luck, but it always seems to happen this way

If someone can do a key test we all can find out for sure

I've put this phones in my pocket with keys many times, dropped it several times, not a scratch yet. Whatever it's made of, it's pretty tough.

just to say this... like many people who were surprised by vibrant getting scratched so easily... Im on of them too! Because in theory if it has gorilla glass its suppose to be a lot tougher than average glass! I understand its not un-scratchable but it deff got scratched very easily being that i had nothing in my pockets! and that whenever it did recieve that scratch it wasnt from something really bad because i would of noticed it... since the phone is around me all the time!
So if any kind souls who believe this is a gorilla screen please demonstrate it for us on a video.... Take a key and scratch it the glass around and we'll see then....

I don't use a sp, but my phone still looks brand new.. No sp, no case, usually keep my phone in my pocket when walking around. Screen is still smooth a glass. Could samsung have used different materials depending on when it was built, kind of like the problem with the shortage if amoled screens?

I actually dropped my phone on one of those concrete roads in a way that send the phone sliding on the concrete several feet face down. All 4 corners of the phone's bezel show scratches but nothing on the screen itself.

I agree 100%!!!!
I put my first one on backwards and complained to them about not having standard directions. (You take the plastic covers off in reverse?) I did not read the instructions, but they still sent me three free new ones.

I would never personally do this, and a 3 dollar screen protector to protect the integrity of a very sweet piece of equipment, is a very small price to pay.
I just find it hard to believe that with only cloth surrounding it it got scratched. Not even lint in your pocket? I call BS

Trying to get ahead of the game. Isn't the Infuse the same screen size and layout as the Epic Touch? If so Seidioonline.com has some great screen protectors.

I'm not asking sarcastically, I'm generally curious: Why bother with screen protectors on these? They only cloud the view and the screens are so incredibly hard to scratch that I can't imagine what you'd have to do to them that a screen protector would manage to prevent. I know my Epic 4G didn't acquire a single sign of damage in its year, and that's pretty unsurprising given the Gorilla Glass that's used on it. Same should apply to the Touch.

I've got the same seidio protector on my epic. You can't even tell its there. Looks and feels exactly like the screen.
Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I've tried another companies invisishield?? and it totally sucked ass! Paid dearly for it too, like 30 bucks. It was nothing more than a piece of vinyl.

I've had my original epic without a screen protector since the first day it was released and it still doesn't have a scratch on it. The salesman at the sprint store even commented on how it looked brand new when he was trying to sell me a screen protector for my new Epic touch.
With gorilla glass it's really not needed, unless you just like spending money.

I ordered the Skinomi one too.. but you guys (and others) are making me doubt its necessity. I'm just paranoid that one day it will be scratched by some sand or keys that I forgot were in the pocket.
What if you drop it on sharp pavement/asphalt in such a way that it simply slides across it, would it still not scratch the gorilla glass?

Just search YouTube for Gorilla Glass and watch the absurd and painful things they do to it without effect. RAZOR BLADES across its screen, baggies full of screws, etc.
And in your scenario you'd be far more likely to shatter the screen than scratch it, and no protector will stop that.

I agree with the no need for a screen protector on Gorilla glass. I used to sell phones on craigslist all the time and did find that some people managed to scratch iPhone screens. I'm sorry, but if I pay that much money for electronics, then I am gonna take care of them. Then again I've seen people with ragged out Mercedes and Audi's also, so go figure.

iphones use "scratch resistant" glass also which is all gorilla glass claims to be. All it takes is one grain of sand in your pocket to get micro scratches or worse on gorilla glass.

Because they don't cloud the view at all if you use the clear ones and they actually do scratch quite easily by sand and other debris. Look no further then the plethora of scratched iPhone 4s with gorilla glass and you can see it's nowhere near scratch proof.

i made this for every1 asking about screen size of infuse v epic touch

The dimensions listed are sometimes misleading on those sites; I owned a Vibrant which was techincaly a different size than international SGS yet every single accessory fit like a glove. That is obviously not the case with this device, but the dimensions are pretty close.
I opened like 4 boxes of Infuse accessories at Best Buy this morning looking for something temporary to protect my device while better options appear and aside from a few minor things, all of the cases fit the ET4G well. The Infuse is more square than our device and the headphone jack and volume rockers are a tad off (though still usable). Only major incompatibility is that mic hole is in wrong place on all the Infuse cases. I ultimately did not end up buying anything, but I am almost positive that Infuse screen protectors would be the exact right size.

All it takes is one scratch to ruin your phone experience. That's my opinion.

So why doesn't the Galaxy Nexus have Gorilla glass again?

The predominant reasoning for this on the interwebz was because of the 'curve' of the screen. I never did understand if this was the concave curve of the screen from top to bottom or the convex curve of the screen around the edges. (you know...the one that makes dry screen protectors bubble up around the edges if they are not a few mm smaller)
HOWEVER,
This morning, Anandtech released their review of the Nokia Lumia 800. That phone has both macro and micro curves (I've held the N9 with the same glass) and that glass is Corning Gorilla glass!
I understand that Gorilla glass can be scratched with a material hard enough etc.,etc. I just want to point out, it doesn't seem to be a technological limitation that keeps Gorilla Glass from our phones.

I thought the screen was made of a tough glazing by Corning but not Gorilla glass. I treat this almost the same as my Motorola stuff but I did case the back of it because it's like paper. I'm much more worried about the back than the screen.

It's funny cuz you can't scratch any phone screen ever with keys...

I managed to scratch mine within days of getting it. I'm not sure how, but it's rather frustrating. It would be nice if it remained pristine for at least a few weeks...

My GN has a hair line scratch that can be seen at an angle on a black screen. Its a bit annoying since im OCD but compared to my Epic 4G and the abuse that one went through its kinda sad.

Why? Simple. Because they have to kill too many Gorilla's to make the glass.

I did hear that Corning has a new product out called 'Lotus glass'.....but the primary feature of that product (if I remember right) was large scratch resistant touch screen surfaces like TVs etc. I think there may be some physical limitation that keeps gorilla glass from being used on devices much larger than a laptop. Lotus glass was supposed to solve that.
But you're right, I KNOW the rest of the case is going to scuff. With or without a case. Just give it six months. Unless you go the polymer skins route.
Anyways......It isn't about what you're going to do with the information now. It was just interesting that the main reason cited as behind why Gorilla glass (and search ANY forum for the clamor behind the Gnex not having it) does not appear to be true.

A few months back I said the hell with screen protectors on my Droid Incredible. I knew I was getting a new phone soon anyway. The incredible has gorilla glass, and it is now covered with a bunch of tiny little scratches. No glass is scratch proof, it's all in how you treat it. If you have a desk job and you are careful with you phone, you probably won't scratch it up too bad. If you work construction, you may still mess it up with an otter box.
If the nexus had gorilla glass there would still be threads about scratches on the screen. We probably went from a 95% chance that you won't scratch your screen to a 91% chance you won't scratch the screen with this new glass. If you don't buy it, look at most phones with gorilla glass that are not handled carefully and you'll see scratches.

Glass is still glass. You can make it slightly stronger, but at the end it's still glass. Treat your large touchscreen phone well and you won't have problems.

Why does it matter what type of hardened glass it has? Do you know for a fact that the glass they went with for the galaxy nexus scratches easier than gorilla glass, or do you just know the gorilla glass "name" so you like to utter it like a monkey?

Exactly! It all comes down to the user.
You scratched up an Incredible with Gorilla Glass, and I personally have had various phones w/o Gorilla Glass and I never use cases or screen protectors and they were all in mint condition when I passed them onto someone else.
So moral of the story, focus less on what brand the glass is and more on how you protect your phone.

Yup.. When I took care of my Incredible it was always in perfect shape. Then I stopped giving a crap when the Nexus was announced and I knew I was switching. Gorilla glass or not, scratches showed up.

Ive never used a screen protector with my INC2 and tried hard as hell to be very careful with it but some how I got a small scratch in it within 3 weeks. I'm not sure how much less or more the GN screen is but I'm trying to avoid using a screen protector on it all because I love the naked feel.

You know what happened the last time I talked up Gorilla Glass on a Droid RAZR?
The guy I was talking to took the RAZR, banged it as hard as he could on the desk corner, and cracked/powdered the screen. "Not so tough," he said.
Moral of this story is you, the user, can protect your phone far better than any manufacturer.

Everything is about $$.
Nexus has a few extra things that probably push it's cost higher, so they are likely going with an unbranded version, in order to keep the cost down enough.
I'm sure the screen is pretty costly in itself, while the Note is same resolution and tech - it's bigger so probably easier to make.

I personally prefer no screen-protector. The reason is it feels much better. And the screen is generally pretty strong. And I've only got two little scratches personally. Unless you throw your phone full-speed at the asphalt ground, a screen protector isn't really needed.

Better safe then sorry.

I run without one and I have on every single phone with a glass screen. The only time I used one the phone had a plastic screen which is very prone to scratches.
As stated before, I prefer the feel of glass, it's very nice and how the designers intended it be used. Also as stated, glass is pretty tough. You really have to try to scratch it, I think at least.
I've had 3 smartphones that had glass screens, my first one, a Samsung Moment (slider phone) I slid it open while driving a golf cart (stupid stuff you do in security). The phone flew pretty well, slid I'd say... 20-25 feet, on the face, and I picked it up. The plastic bezel was of course nicked or scratched, but the glass was flawless.
Also, every screen protector I've seen gets lint/dust/crap under the edges. They stay on very well if applied right, but I'd say getting a small piece of sand stuck under that edge would be just as bad as anything else.
Lastly, the biggest issue with glass isn't so much scratches as it shattering. Those protectors may help with shattering, I don't know personally. I'm pretty sure if you drop kicked your phone by accident and the screen hit a decently pointed object, it'd be done for.

I believe that having screen protector helps protect the screen from shattering. I personally have it on just because I like to keep my phone nice and mint. That's a reason why I have OtterBox on too

Thanks for the responses. I am running a pretty standard size case on it. I used to have an invisible shield. The screen just doesn't look mor feel the same.

That's what it's gonna feel like if you have the protector on.

No screen protector for me, but I always do my best to not keep any keys or anything else in my pocket when I put my phone it it

I guess, but the screen feels less clean and glossy. When the protector goes on, it feels kind of matte in a sense. And also the screen is very strong in general. You're not really gonna scratch it that bad. Also, its curved so that helps as well.

BTW, They do have cornering glass as screen protectors. So now u have no excesses.

My 1st glass fronted smartphone went without a screen protector because I'd seen lots of videos on YouTube of people going nuts with keys and knives and scissors testing and supposedly proofing the amazing scratch resistance of glass screens. Regardless I was always super careful not to have anything else in the same trouser pocket but STILL I got a scratch on the glass in the same week I'd bought it and have not a darned clue how it happened.
Could feel the scratch under finger every time I used the thing thereafter. Very annoyed.
Always bought a screen protecter for every new smartphone after that one.
Better safe than sorry.

Well it's science, since sand is harder than our glass, it will scratch it. Keys aren't as hard as our glass. That's how it works. That includes gorilla glass by the way

This might seem overly obvious, but one of these is really the way to go as it protects your phone far better than a crappy 'stick-on' protector, for the sake of a few dollars you add a significant level of additional protection:

Agreed. Also even though you don't put your phone with anything, there's always little things like sand that always scratch it. Trust me on this one

Agreed. Also even though you don't put your phone with anything, there's always little things like sand that always scratch it. Trust me on this one

Haha, yeah I know the feeling. I got my Galaxy Nexus a few days ago because my Sony Xperia had a massive scratch across the screen. It happened when I left hotel keys in my pocket with the phone. Right now I'm hugely paranoid about ruining another touch screen.

[Q] Scratches on Galaxy Note II Screen !!

I was shocked today, I found 3 small scratches on my Note 2 screen. As I understand it has a gorilla glass coating and it is scratch resistant
My Note never fall into the ground or even touch any keys or hard stuff !!
Any one has the same issue ?
I tried all the cleaning materials to get rid of these as I thought it is some dirt on the screen !!

A pocket with a few grain of sand will do the trick.

Indeed, this is why I put a screen protector on right after I took off the factory shipping protection film.

Yep. After a couple of days I ended up with some light scratches right where I swipe the screen. Same thing with never dropping it...
Went immediately to get a flip cover after that. (bummed because I prefer naked phones)

I bought this before I bought the phone:

Fits great, its not smooth the touch as a naked one, but hey....No glove, no love.
My gorilla screens have scratched with that sand in the pocket. Kind of easy for that here in Florida.

There is a thread like this in every forum. Gorilla glass dont mean **** when it comes in contact with any material harder than.. well GLASS!!
Bottom line is anything harder than Gorilla glass which has a hardness between 8+9 will scratch the surface.
Iron, steel, nickel, lead, gold, silver or any medal are softer than gorilla glass, so they should not scratch the glass.
On the other hand, sand contains quartz and it could scratch gorilla glass, for example when sand is in your pockets (after a walk on the beach).
One more thing:
a common misconception is: 'make something sharp and it will scratch'. it's wrong. you can make your fingernail or your key as sharp as possible, it is still softer than the glass and it will not scratch.
So, no, keys wont scratch it (steel), but anything harder than 8 on the scale will with no problem. So anybody that has no scratches obviously hasnt made contact to the screen with anything harder than a 8 on this scale.

Ya I'm in Florida too and that would be the only way we could be safe without a shield.
I learned my lesson, after using shields for the longest time I decided to not get one on my evo3d. Once I started seeing the little scratches I went back to a shield.

Well so much for throwing GN2 into my surf bag.

Gorrilla glass on Galaxy Note 2 HUGE disappointment! Scratches easily.
I have had the note 1 for about a year now without a screen protector and the only time i started seeing fine scratches on it was after 2 months or so.At the time had high hopes for Gorilla Glass and wasn't disappointed at all given my usage.
I got the Galaxy note 2 2 weeks ago and already there are fine scratches on it!!!???
I am shocked and surprised because I have not started using it officially as my daily driver (still got the note 1) and it has been in a pocket or on a soft surface screen up (waiting for the covers to arrive).
This has made me to start putting into question the build quality of Corning and Samsung.
Why such a sudden outrage you ask.
1. Its because the Note 2 is a premium device and quality has to be ensured from the word go!
2. The S-Pen! The device is meant to be used with the S-Pen, therefore they had to make sure the screen is resistant to scratches! Duh!
3. The Note 1 fared way better than this with heavier usage. (Trust me it has very faint scratches after a year's usage!)
Planning to visit the Service Center to see what they have to say.
Otherwise will sell this and wait for a good batch

When I got my S3, I put in in my pocket right away, clean soft cloths. Still got it good. Went and bought the flip cover then and there. Not another scratch yet. My note 2, Sprint didn't have the flip case so I babied it and just today, I made it thank god. Got a cover. I've have stuff on my hands from just playing with my self... So its easy to do. Its really the best that can be done without a protector. That's just life.

I'm sure everyone that owns this phone was asked if they would like to purchase screen protectors upon purchase.
I'm also sure that people have read about other devices that use gorilla glass getting scratches.
There has been more than enough fair warning to take precautions against these situations.

I was not asked. I read this thread and went back to the Sprint store that same day to pick up a body glove case and a screen protector. The next day I dropped my phone on one of my dogs paws who then thought it was her toy. Recovered it quickly and couldn't be happier to have this extra protection.
I plan to get some nicer feeling stuff later on but this will keep me safe until then.

There's so much back and forth about whether to use a protector and if it interferes with the spen. I have little interest in the spen, I slapped on a screen cover and have had 0 problems. What I do have is peace of mind. Bought the 15 dollar special listed above, got a small bubble but not enough to care. Besides it came with 2 protectors, at some point I'll re-do it.
My 2 cents.

I'm happy to report that it has no effect on the spen if installed correctly.
The debate on the screen protector is a simply one. People screens are being scratched. People who aren't even going to the beach are getting scratched screens. I have read reports of keys leaving scratch marks when people try to show off even though that shouldn't have been possible. As a good rule of thumb, just because it isn't easy to scratch doesn't mean it will not get scratched.
If you really worried about finding scratches on your device then put a screen protector on it ASAP. Don't let anyone else talk you out of it. They didn't buy your device and they aren't going to replace if something happens. If you want to go naked and not worry about babying your device just dont' be shocked if you find any scratches on it. My mom throws her around and could careless if it is in prefect condition as long as the device still works.

I can't imagine your mom spent 300 on her phone, which is why I don't get why people don't go for that little extra protection..

She had the old nexus back when it first came out through Verizon and I think it was a 300 dollar phone. Her job brought it for her so technically she didn't spend anything on it and that is probably why she doesn't care about the condition it is in.
