The predominant reasoning for this on the interwebz was because of the 'curve' of the screen. I never did understand if this was the concave curve of the screen from top to bottom or the convex curve of the screen around the edges. (you know...the one that makes dry screen protectors bubble up around the edges if they are not a few mm smaller)
HOWEVER,
This morning, Anandtech released their review of the Nokia Lumia 800. That phone has both macro and micro curves (I've held the N9 with the same glass) and that glass is Corning Gorilla glass!
I understand that Gorilla glass can be scratched with a material hard enough etc.,etc. I just want to point out, it doesn't seem to be a technological limitation that keeps Gorilla Glass from our phones.

I thought the screen was made of a tough glazing by Corning but not Gorilla glass. I treat this almost the same as my Motorola stuff but I did case the back of it because it's like paper. I'm much more worried about the back than the screen.

I managed to scratch mine within days of getting it. I'm not sure how, but it's rather frustrating. It would be nice if it remained pristine for at least a few weeks...
My GN has a hair line scratch that can be seen at an angle on a black screen. Its a bit annoying since im OCD but compared to my Epic 4G and the abuse that one went through its kinda sad.
Why? Simple. Because they have to kill too many Gorilla's to make the glass.

I did hear that Corning has a new product out called 'Lotus glass'.....but the primary feature of that product (if I remember right) was large scratch resistant touch screen surfaces like TVs etc. I think there may be some physical limitation that keeps gorilla glass from being used on devices much larger than a laptop. Lotus glass was supposed to solve that.
But you're right, I KNOW the rest of the case is going to scuff. With or without a case. Just give it six months. Unless you go the polymer skins route.
Anyways......It isn't about what you're going to do with the information now. It was just interesting that the main reason cited as behind why Gorilla glass (and search ANY forum for the clamor behind the Gnex not having it) does not appear to be true.

A few months back I said the hell with screen protectors on my Droid Incredible. I knew I was getting a new phone soon anyway. The incredible has gorilla glass, and it is now covered with a bunch of tiny little scratches. No glass is scratch proof, it's all in how you treat it. If you have a desk job and you are careful with you phone, you probably won't scratch it up too bad. If you work construction, you may still mess it up with an otter box.
If the nexus had gorilla glass there would still be threads about scratches on the screen. We probably went from a 95% chance that you won't scratch your screen to a 91% chance you won't scratch the screen with this new glass. If you don't buy it, look at most phones with gorilla glass that are not handled carefully and you'll see scratches.

Glass is still glass. You can make it slightly stronger, but at the end it's still glass. Treat your large touchscreen phone well and you won't have problems.

Why does it matter what type of hardened glass it has? Do you know for a fact that the glass they went with for the galaxy nexus scratches easier than gorilla glass, or do you just know the gorilla glass "name" so you like to utter it like a monkey?

Exactly! It all comes down to the user.
You scratched up an Incredible with Gorilla Glass, and I personally have had various phones w/o Gorilla Glass and I never use cases or screen protectors and they were all in mint condition when I passed them onto someone else.
So moral of the story, focus less on what brand the glass is and more on how you protect your phone.
Yup.. When I took care of my Incredible it was always in perfect shape. Then I stopped giving a crap when the Nexus was announced and I knew I was switching. Gorilla glass or not, scratches showed up.

Ive never used a screen protector with my INC2 and tried hard as hell to be very careful with it but some how I got a small scratch in it within 3 weeks. I'm not sure how much less or more the GN screen is but I'm trying to avoid using a screen protector on it all because I love the naked feel.
You know what happened the last time I talked up Gorilla Glass on a Droid RAZR?
The guy I was talking to took the RAZR, banged it as hard as he could on the desk corner, and cracked/powdered the screen. "Not so tough," he said.
Moral of this story is you, the user, can protect your phone far better than any manufacturer.

Everything is about $$.
Nexus has a few extra things that probably push it's cost higher, so they are likely going with an unbranded version, in order to keep the cost down enough.
I'm sure the screen is pretty costly in itself, while the Note is same resolution and tech - it's bigger so probably easier to make.

I'm not asking sarcastically, I'm generally curious: Why bother with screen protectors on these? They only cloud the view and the screens are so incredibly hard to scratch that I can't imagine what you'd have to do to them that a screen protector would manage to prevent. I know my Epic 4G didn't acquire a single sign of damage in its year, and that's pretty unsurprising given the Gorilla Glass that's used on it. Same should apply to the Touch.
I've got the same seidio protector on my epic. You can't even tell its there. Looks and feels exactly like the screen.
Sorry if I sound like a fanboy, but I've tried another companies invisishield?? and it totally sucked ass! Paid dearly for it too, like 30 bucks. It was nothing more than a piece of vinyl.

I've had my original epic without a screen protector since the first day it was released and it still doesn't have a scratch on it. The salesman at the sprint store even commented on how it looked brand new when he was trying to sell me a screen protector for my new Epic touch.
With gorilla glass it's really not needed, unless you just like spending money.
I ordered the Skinomi one too.. but you guys (and others) are making me doubt its necessity. I'm just paranoid that one day it will be scratched by some sand or keys that I forgot were in the pocket.
What if you drop it on sharp pavement/asphalt in such a way that it simply slides across it, would it still not scratch the gorilla glass?

Just search YouTube for Gorilla Glass and watch the absurd and painful things they do to it without effect. RAZOR BLADES across its screen, baggies full of screws, etc.
And in your scenario you'd be far more likely to shatter the screen than scratch it, and no protector will stop that.
I agree with the no need for a screen protector on Gorilla glass. I used to sell phones on craigslist all the time and did find that some people managed to scratch iPhone screens. I'm sorry, but if I pay that much money for electronics, then I am gonna take care of them. Then again I've seen people with ragged out Mercedes and Audi's also, so go figure.

iphones use "scratch resistant" glass also which is all gorilla glass claims to be. All it takes is one grain of sand in your pocket to get micro scratches or worse on gorilla glass.

Because they don't cloud the view at all if you use the clear ones and they actually do scratch quite easily by sand and other debris. Look no further then the plethora of scratched iPhone 4s with gorilla glass and you can see it's nowhere near scratch proof.

The dimensions listed are sometimes misleading on those sites; I owned a Vibrant which was techincaly a different size than international SGS yet every single accessory fit like a glove. That is obviously not the case with this device, but the dimensions are pretty close.
I opened like 4 boxes of Infuse accessories at Best Buy this morning looking for something temporary to protect my device while better options appear and aside from a few minor things, all of the cases fit the ET4G well. The Infuse is more square than our device and the headphone jack and volume rockers are a tad off (though still usable). Only major incompatibility is that mic hole is in wrong place on all the Infuse cases. I ultimately did not end up buying anything, but I am almost positive that Infuse screen protectors would be the exact right size.
All it takes is one scratch to ruin your phone experience. That's my opinion.

My galaxy S which has the gorilla glass never had scratches and it is now more than 6 months old.

Just dropped mine 5ft to the pavement landed face first and the battery cover came off. It's still flawless I don't know how but it is.... I was expecting it to be cracked but I'm pretty impressed!

i used my gn with the screen film still on it for over a week until i got my screen protectors in the mail, no glass screen is unscratchable/unbreakable. there are plenty of substances around that will scratch gorilla glass (eg sand) and if even a tiny bit ends up in your pocket, better have a screen protector!
Yea my original G2x had 2 tiny micro scratches on it. Not noticable unless viewing a white background, more commonly when viewing webpages before they fully load.
The LG Updater bricked mine and got an exchange. Haven't had a problem with my new one but just goes to show.

Wise advice here, but nobody sells screen protectors for the nexus where I am. I've ordered some online and I'll be taking it to a professional to get stuck on (every time I do it I leave bubbles; yes I've watched numerous instructional videos alas I cannot do it) - I've only ordered three protectors, hopefully that is more than enough.
All the screen (even Gorilla) would have chance to get scratches...

I'm tired of hearing people say even gorilla glass will scratch blah blah blah. Gorilla glass has proven to me to be infinitely more scratch proof than the glass on the Nexus. Like 100 fold over. After a while I was treating my Vibrant like it was bullet proof. Throwing it across the room, dropping it scores of times, putting it into my pocket with keys, etc etc... and to this day - "not one scratch on it", not one! For those who think sand in your pocket would scratch gorilla glass, you better think again. Obviously there will be rare occassions where it would happen but for the most part, it'll survive without any issues.
My nexus on the hand has been babied to death and less than a week into owning it, 3 scratches.
I will never, EVER buy a phone without gorilla glass again.
I've been rocking my Incredible since day one without screen protection and it's still mint. (besides a complete crack in upper right corner (in an area that is beyond the display) from one of the worse drops, which was more of a drunken throw). I really hope that the Nexus can handle my lifestyle, but sounds like this thread is reporting mixed reviews. I refuse to wear a condom so I hope I get one of the good ones...
p.s. I surf alot in the summer and sand all over but still no scratches. I guess it has to hit with the right angle and friction???

One grain of sand or salt + friction (i.e. pocket) and even the Gorilla Glass 2 on the RAZR gets scratched.
You can run a key across the screen all day long, but it only take a granule of something to etch a deep scratch.
If u get a decent screen protector and install it well (I know it ain't easy) it will look/feel as good as the naked glass, and then u dont have to worry - and in a year when u pull it off, the glass will be PERFECT. Small price to pay. The Galaxy Nexus is so thin that with a slim TPU case it's still crazy thin, and you will keep it in perfect condition

I'm sorry to say, but you should have ordered the SGP Flex instead. The Ultra Oleophobic ones don't extend to the edge of the screen, because they use the dry adhesive method, and if they went right to the edge of the curved screen they would peel.
Frankly, it looks pretty ugly having a band around the edge that's not covered. Plus, because they don't extend to the edges, it's much more noticeable if you get it off centre.
As mentioned in the other thread i have a couple of tiny scratches after 3 weeks of use and never ever putting anything else in my pocket with it. Disappointing.

Couldn't agree more. I was the same way with both my Fascinate and now my charge. Neither device has gotten a single scratch.

Sand will scratch sand will scratch sand will scratch sand. What do I mean by that? ALL glass (including Gorilla Glass and its differently arranged superficial crystalline structure) is the same molecule- SiO2 or "silica." Is there variation within silica? - yes, but minutely.
[good read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohs_scale_of_mineral_hardness Geology and Mineralogy have huge unrealized relevancy in everyday life- just like under-appreciated physics] The variation will not give silica the hardness of say, "topaz" (at 8 on the scale), but rather is usually due to impurities (additional minerals) that weaken it down to ~ 6 or so. Gorilla Glass seems to be a purified silica, maxing out at 7 hardness. Quartz crystals (what we call "sand") also usually sits at 7 (chemical weathering can both purify and contaminate depending upon the situation), and do not have to be just "sand" like beach/desert sand. Sand is a size classification, you also have "silt" which is just smaller (down to microscopic) quartz crystals, and is "aerial saltating" (airborne- carried by the air but not in solution with it). Many other minerals may be present in the "cloud" that hovers about <50' from the earth's surface due to weathering that will scratch just about anything, so "grit" is a huge issue for ANY screen. Gorilla Glass is nicer than other glass types (although according to the Vickers scale Corning uses, not by much), but it is not invincible and items that can/will scratch are much too common to be flippantly dismissed. I haven't put screen protectors on any phone in the last 2 years because I've never needed them. I handle with care and the phone is the only thing ever in a pocket.
Today I noticed on my GSM Nexus that there are light vertical scratches from the bottom of the screen. It reminds me a lot of the swirls/scratches you see on cars after a few washes. Head on and in daily use I don't see them but under a bright light or sun its very easy to see.
I'm not an idiot and obviously I somehow caused these scratches but what the hell could I have done to cause scratches all over fortified glass? Seems very suspicious and maybe Gorilla glass is much better.

It is possible that Gorilla Glass may have saved your phone in this case, but I have the exact scratches on my Droid X with GG. Also my Xoom. I ended up with screen protectors on them for this reason. Nothing is impossible to scratch. And once they get tiny scratches like that they are more susceptible to more.

I never had any issues on my HTC Incredible and Sensation both which use Gorilla glass but this phone after only 2 months its crazy there are scratches. Happened over this weekend. Only thing I can think of is sliding it in and out of my jeans. That's really it. No drops or no trips to beach. Its just bizarre.

It's 'like' gorilla glass perhaps, but nowhere near as effective. Gorilla glass my not be bullet-proof or 100% scratch resistant but i find it's much, much better as resisting scratches as compared to a normal screen
I first found this out after i traded in the SGS1 for the Nexus S - never used a screen protector for the gorilla glass of the SGS1 and my nexus S screen scratched within a couple of weeks. Had to use a screen protector.
Had a SGS2 and Sensation for a few months - never used a screen protector yet not a single scratch.
The iphone 4/4s with their 'fortified/hardened' glasses are even worse.
Needless to say that the first thing i did to my GN when i got it was apply a screen protector on it. Peace of mind.
Samsung is not advertising the glass on the Gnex as being "like" GG...I think Corning, makers of GG, would object strongly if Samsung did any such thing. If someone in a phone shop told you that, you really can't blame Samsung for it.
The Gnex doesn't have gorilla glass because the Gnex screen has a curve and GG is flat. To be honest, I've never seen advertising from Samsung that mentions the strength or durability of the glass on the Gnex at all, but I probably haven't seen every single Gnex ad that exists.

Dinc didn't use gorilla glass but it was fortified glass and it didn't get a scratch in the 2 years I had it. I just have to remember to be more careful with my gnex.

What's weird is my scratches seem to be more to the screen's coating?? than to the glass? As in you see them if you face the phone top down but at an angle you can't see them. Almost reminds me of what scratches on a screen protector look like. It has no impact at all on the display when the screen is on or when there's not a bright overhead light. Even with a bright overhead light I have to look at the screen straight on so is it possible it's a scratch in whatever coating they use? Running my fingers doesn't feel anything either.

My scratch can easily be felt if you run a fingernail over it- or, at least, you could before I put on an XOskin (not meaning to spam on their behalf, but their screen protector fills existing scratches well). I didn't have any microscratches like you describe at all, and I think I'd be pissed about that too. Possibly a defective phone? Or a refurb that has a cheap screen protector on it?

I REFUSE to put a screen protector on, it's BS that we have to do that. I just added insurance so worst case if it gets much worse I'll pay the deductible and get a replacement. I absolutely hate screen protectors with a passion...last time I used one was on a Palm Pre and then a Hero. These beautiful phones and glass is meant to be felt by your fingertips - it's a whole different experience when you touch glass or plastic IMHO.

I have a few of those tiny scratches on my Nexus. Not really noticeable unless I really look for them so I'm not terribly bothered.

I look at it as being no different to using a condom...not perfect, but a heck of a lot better than the alternative. ;-)

the scratches surely are not on the glass but on the coating which is applied to the glass.

You should try Zagg. I'm serious, it doesn't interfere with the screen, and it absolutely works. Gorillia glass is tempered, meaning it's stronger than regular glass, just like a car windshield. That being said, it will eventually scratch if the conditions are right. Believe it or not, dust that settles on the glass will cause minor abrasions- couple that with being inside a pocket, it's a miracle that your phone isn't worse off.
I mean, the screen won't get scratched, and considering you have $600+ phone, I think the $12 on ebay is worth it. I'll tell you right now, the one made for the galaxy nexus covers the entire front, even the very bottom. Couple that with an otterbox commuter, or defender (with the built in screen protector removed) your phone will not get broken.

I am very, very careful with my GN. I put it in its sleeve, put the sleeve in the left pocket with nothing else, screen in. Always wipe after heavy usage.
Oh and I don't flail around with it like a freakin' kraken.
Result? No scratches! Of course, the charger port is getting a bit worn in, but hey, not my fault the battery sucks.

If Zagg is still the same tacky, orange-peeled nonsense that it was when I got my Incredible, I'd pass on that in a minute. It protects well, but the tackiness is absolutely unbearable (I played with my Dinc last night and the touch/feel was nonsense), the orange peel can be unslightly to the OCD (ala me), and it starts to yellow after a couple of years.
BUT....diff'rent strokes.
Don't bother with wet application screen protectors. They all suck.
Get your self a brando UK ultra crystal. Can't even tell its on the phone. (And I hate screen protectors)
Takes like 14 days from Hong Kong to USA but its worth it.

I can look at it other way - it's a $700 phone (for me) so why ruin the amazing glass screen, touch response, look and feel of the device by a piece of $12 plastic??
I just got my phone a month ago and I take very good care of it. In fact my old Nexus S which I had for 10 months with no screen protector doesn't have any scratches on the screen. And it's worth pointing out that the Nexus S doesn't even use Gorilla Glass, let alone the Gorilla Glass 2 that's in the GS3.
I have noticed a series of fine scratches appearing near the bottom of the display. A friend of mine from Ottawa also got an S3 about 3 weeks ago and he also mentioned he has scratches on his screen and he has no idea how they got there.
The body of the phone is also quite soft, and the other week I accidentally dropped it on my wooden patio deck and it dented the edge of the phone on the lower right side, exposing the black plastic under the pearl-blue finish.
Could this be a manufacturing issue and/or defective Corning Glass? Samsung has noted they have received a higher than anticipated return of S3's since the launch. Please post your feedback so far with the Galaxy S3.
I should note that I absolutely love this phone, and it performs incredibly at everything else it does. No complaints at all, except of course my issues with the screen. I'll be taking it in to a Samsung Service center in the GTA in the coming week or two to get a full analysis.
Note: I've attached 2 images of the scratches on my display.
I have a screen prot. on mine since I bought it, so no idea how it is without it. my camera glass or whatever has two very fine scratches on it though. And I baby this thing like crazy. Usually have it in a pocket and with nothing with it.

I got some very fine micro abrasions on my screen before I put a screen protector on it (only took about 3 days for that to happen). Despite the fact that this is gorilla glass I think a screen protector is essential.
Nope mine is still pristine. I never put it in a pocket with anything that has enough hardness to scratch it. My zippo, keys, loose change, etc... Its always either by its self or with my leather wallet at most.
Yup, I have some very tiny scratches I didn't even know were there until I was using my phone in sunlight. I'm pretty amazed how they even got their considering I baby the phone like mad. I think Gorrila Glass 2 is just better at hiding scratches.

i dont get how people that have a top of the line 800$ phone don't buy a simple 2$ screen protector. Gorilla glass is scratch resistant, but anything harder or equal hardness will scratche the screen. Sand which is made of fine glass particles will scratch the phone in your pocket and thos tiny particles are practically everywhere. If you dont have a screen protector, i hope you have gotten your lesson.

I have some fine scratches too. Ordered the Defender but it is on delay so I have been waiting weeks to get it...
out the gate i had a screen protector and a case. I cant let anything bad happen to my baby..
Those scratches are pretty visible. Defective screen, perhaps? Either that or you had some majorly sharp sand particles in your pocket and applied significant pressure to them against the glass.
I've had mine for >1 month now. I keep it in my pocket with keys and occasionally coins, and not a single scratch on the glass surface. However, I do have a metric ton of scratches on the plastic back cover! Gorilla glass can take a beating as long as the items that are rubbing against it aren't some sort of crystal (think quartz in sand) or some sort of extremely tough metal (think tungsten).
Edit: derp, forgot to mention that I don't use screen protectors or cases on my phones.

I'm aware the phone is not scratch proof, I've owned a number of android and iOS devices. This is the first time however, I've seen scratches appear out of nowhere. None of my other devices used a screen-protector and none of them scratched, that goes for a Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, iPhone 4, and iPad v1.0.
Apparently the screen of the GS3 is very sensitive to scratches and necessitates getting a screen-protector. This will be the first phone I've had to get one for.
You should need to use sand or a similar substance to scratch gorilla glass. My sg3 looks mint, and I have never used any sort of protector on it - and I have it in my pocket with my keys sometimes.

I remember when Gorrilla Glass was new on phones and people were doing scratch tests. I was bold enough to do one on my Galaxy S - I tried to scratch the screen up with my keys. Never got a single scratch.
The Galaxy S3 on the hand, I don't know what's wrong with it lol. It must be really prone to scratches as I can't even recall a single time a relatively sharp object has even been near the screen.
Damn, those are some deep scratches considering you have no idea how they got there. I've only got the SGSII & I put a zagg on it the 1St day I got it & I have 2 case mate cases, 4 tpu case in various Vol, two aluminium back case things & 3 bumpers, 2 plastic/rubber the other metal. Over my 2 year contract this fone will end up,costing me around 2k, so your damn skippy Ima protect it better than my child.

No issues. Naked but carried in a belt case. I don't put out in my pocket to avoid sand or other debris.
I am having micro abrasion issues as well. First Gorilla Glass phone I have had this issue with, previously my HOX, Gnote,,sgs hercules,Optimus LTE, SGS2, Razr, atrix etc have never had this problem. I m inclined to to think it is a first run manufacturing problem on the new process, or that Gorilla Glass 2 is prone to micro abrasions.
As for the the blah blah blah buy a screen protector rants, the reason i buy 800$ phones is to be able to touch the screen and have the best interface experience, if i wanted a dampened plastic screen and refracted light i wouldnt buy the newest phones out there. If it meets your needs, awesome, but not all of us are looking for the same experience, so please refrain from the obvious.
Don't get a screen protector, get a nice rubber skin, I got a $5 one from amazon, dropped twice on pavement from 5+ ft, and no marks anywhere.
Screen protectors compromise screen sensitivity (noticeable if you use a stylus) and don't protect the rest of your phone.

So I thought the SGS3 has gorilla glass? I've had my new phone a month and have a scratch on the screen! I had my SGS1 for 2 years and the screen is perfect! It doesn't effect operation, but it's annoying!
Have you been to a place with sand? Knives can't do crap to it, but sand can literally ruin it...

What he said, I took mine to the beach just one day, kept it in the bag but then listened to music for a bit, tried to be very careful, and got my first scratch on it, BUT...luckily I had a screen protector on there so it only scratched it, sand just sucks. I had it in my pocket with keys and all that loads of times and nothing, but one time on the beach and it would of scratched it, glad I had the SGP nano on there. The screen is as tough as any other, you just happened to get the right combo to scratch it.
Yeah Gorilla Glass is all the hype but in reality there's plenty of ways to scratch your screen. I strongly recommend putting a screen protector on it... you can get them 2 for 6-7$ on ebay, I usually change it every 6 months or so, or when it's too scratched up.
One thing with Gorilla Glass is, your screen will NOT break, no matter what. So when you see kids around with a shattered iPhone screen, feel safe in the fact that your screen is pretty much bullet proof.

Seriously?!? First time I hear of a GG screen breaking... there are plenty of youtube videos showing it's pretty damn solid at least. How in hell did you break one in your pocket? Were you in a combat zone or something?
it all depends on how they are hit anything from the side and its pritty much toast. hitting the glass directly it stands a much better chance

mine cracked, second day. and from 3 ft drop on tiles. really disapointed. my old galaxy with the original gorilla glass held up way worse drops. gg2 sucks. thinner is not better.
Just putting this out there to clear up any confusion - the iPhone uses Gorilla Glass, which shatters all the time when dropped. The thing that protects your phone most in those oops moments are the plastic housing. Plastic is awesome at absorbing energy from drops and impacts by deforming and whatnot, hence why a mostly plastic SGS1 will stand up to repeated drops while an iPhone will shatter on the first try. Pretty sure the SGS3 is more shatter prone than the SGS1, simply because there's more glass and it's more exposed than it was on the SGS1.
I shattered a galaxy 1 also 2 galaxy 2s and havnt hurt my s3 yet but I'm sure someday

As someone already mentioned that it's a 'Glass'. Therefore it'll have scratches and it'll break eventually. And it's very trivial to know why some GS3 screen scratches and most doesn't. Last year I got my prescription glasses from lens crafter. Now they told me that the glasses are scratch resistant. Guess what, one of the lenses got a small scratch and the worst thing is I didn't even dropped it. I don't know when, where or how it happened. Bottom line, whether it's Gorilla Glass or some dinosaur or Rhino glass, as long as it's a glass it has 'Fragile' written all over it. Of course these glasses will be way better in wear an tear far better than the normal one. But eventually it'll meet its end.
Look up drop test vids for GS3. Almost always cracks the screen. Usually shoulder height drops, so pretty high but still. It is not hard to crack the screen.

I don't think anyone really thinks gorillaglass2 is unbreakable... a screen protector wont stop it from breaking either... I broke my Inspire with Gorilla Glass 1 when I dropped it in the front yard and it hit one of those cement landscaping scallops directly on the screen and shattered into a million cracks..I think its more about scratching... there's tons of videos on youtube of people doing scratch tests on the phones with coins, keys and even knife blades...and not scratching. Leading a lot of people to not put a protector on the screen because they feel its safe to assume the glass wont scratch...
No sand. Few drops. But just the one scratch in the middle of the screen. I've no idea how it got there.....
I cracked mine in 2 days. A drop from whopping 4 inches on asphalt.

Gorilla Glass is tough. Gorilla Glass v2 is tougher. Someone already posted that its the plastic housing. This is basically totally right. Glass of various types have different degrees of how much impact they can handle, and on the SGS1, the edge is entirely surrounded by a fairly flexible plastic, and the screen is slightly recessed. meaning if you drop it on the edge, the plastic eats much of the force, plus the plastic spreads the force out over a greater area in the process. Glass's main weakness is on the edge because all the force is on a very tiny area. Have you ever seen one of those hand held devices for blowing out a car's window (for emergencies, where you cant get out the door/etc)? All it is is a very fine point recessed in the handle, once you apply force, the tip pops out with not much overall force, but in such a small area it will shatter the window.
The SGS3 will break easier than the SGS1 i am pretty sure, since the glass is all flush, and there's more area that could land with a high force/area ratio due to the screen actually being slightly higher than the plastic edge. If that plastic edge were flush with, or higher than the glass, it would protect against a wider angle of drops.
There have been advances in glass recently that might make all these worries a thing of the past. Glass if chipped enough to form even a microscopic hairline crack will see that crack continue. Most tempered glasses basically spider out and explode into a whole bunch of tiny pieces, but new techniques with microscopic ridges in random directions obstruct the crack's progression, and hopefully we will see technologies like this on the market in the next few years.
