Screen protector, no screen protector? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Do you guys use a screen protector on your phone or not? How bad have you scratched the screen?

I personally prefer no screen-protector. The reason is it feels much better. And the screen is generally pretty strong. And I've only got two little scratches personally. Unless you throw your phone full-speed at the asphalt ground, a screen protector isn't really needed.

Better safe then sorry.

I run without one and I have on every single phone with a glass screen. The only time I used one the phone had a plastic screen which is very prone to scratches.
As stated before, I prefer the feel of glass, it's very nice and how the designers intended it be used. Also as stated, glass is pretty tough. You really have to try to scratch it, I think at least.
I've had 3 smartphones that had glass screens, my first one, a Samsung Moment (slider phone) I slid it open while driving a golf cart (stupid stuff you do in security). The phone flew pretty well, slid I'd say... 20-25 feet, on the face, and I picked it up. The plastic bezel was of course nicked or scratched, but the glass was flawless.
Also, every screen protector I've seen gets lint/dust/crap under the edges. They stay on very well if applied right, but I'd say getting a small piece of sand stuck under that edge would be just as bad as anything else.
Lastly, the biggest issue with glass isn't so much scratches as it shattering. Those protectors may help with shattering, I don't know personally. I'm pretty sure if you drop kicked your phone by accident and the screen hit a decently pointed object, it'd be done for.

I believe that having screen protector helps protect the screen from shattering. I personally have it on just because I like to keep my phone nice and mint. That's a reason why I have OtterBox on too

Thanks for the responses. I am running a pretty standard size case on it. I used to have an invisible shield. The screen just doesn't look mor feel the same.

That's what it's gonna feel like if you have the protector on.

No screen protector for me, but I always do my best to not keep any keys or anything else in my pocket when I put my phone it it

I guess, but the screen feels less clean and glossy. When the protector goes on, it feels kind of matte in a sense. And also the screen is very strong in general. You're not really gonna scratch it that bad. Also, its curved so that helps as well.

BTW, They do have cornering glass as screen protectors. So now u have no excesses.

How resistant to scratching is glass vs a microscopic grain of sand?
My 1st glass fronted smartphone went without a screen protector because I'd seen lots of videos on YouTube of people going nuts with keys and knives and scissors testing and supposedly proofing the amazing scratch resistance of glass screens. Regardless I was always super careful not to have anything else in the same trouser pocket but STILL I got a scratch on the glass in the same week I'd bought it and have not a darned clue how it happened.
Could feel the scratch under finger every time I used the thing thereafter. Very annoyed.
Always bought a screen protecter for every new smartphone after that one.
Better safe than sorry.

Well it's science, since sand is harder than our glass, it will scratch it. Keys aren't as hard as our glass. That's how it works. That includes gorilla glass by the way

This might seem overly obvious, but one of these is really the way to go as it protects your phone far better than a crappy 'stick-on' protector, for the sake of a few dollars you add a significant level of additional protection:

Haha, yeah I know the feeling. I got my Galaxy Nexus a few days ago because my Sony Xperia had a massive scratch across the screen. It happened when I left hotel keys in my pocket with the phone. Right now I'm hugely paranoid about ruining another touch screen.

No screen protector...

Anybody had any issues using the GN without a screen protector?
I've seen one or 2 threads mentioning scratches on the screen but nothing from people using it normally without one on.
And i do remember that early video of somebody going mad with a key on one
So what do you guys reckon?

I didnt use one as i hate screen protectors ..... but then i noticed scratches so now i do
The glass doesnt seem that tough sadly. I was very careful.
I have no idea how easy it is to scratch glass
I'm coming from a Nokia N900...which had a resistive screen, so the front was plastic! In 2 years use i only got 1 major/noticeable scratch on it that happened early on due to my own stupidity, was always kept in a leather case...
But N900 mainly used the hardware keyboard for text input...but always used nails for pushing on small things in the browser...
so i'd think glass would be more scratch resistant than palstic but like i said, i have no reference for glass use!
Personally I hate screen protectors but I noticed a really faint scratch on the screen after a week of owing the phone and put on a Zagg screen protector. Can't same I'm very happy with how the screen now feels but you get use to it and I don't want to risk ruining the awesome screen.

There was one I had for an ipod, long time ago. It was a thin plastic sticker type ..not that crappy squishy type. How I wish I could find those again. If you cleaned the screen properly and put it on right you couldn't tell there was a protector

Yesterday my phone dived face down to the concrete floor...

This is my first time real life experience with the T989 of what we normally see here (video)
Yesterday my phone dived (screen) face down first to the concrete floor, from shoulder height and bounced 4~5 times before coming to a complete stop,
stupid me taking it out of my front pocket with too much force with 2 fingers and it sling shot out accidentally
when i went to pick it up i was fearing for the worst... i was pretty sure the screen would have probably been a total loss
but the sound when it landed smack face down was a horrible and painful sound to hear
to my amazement it survived with only a few scratches

Isn't it your phone took a dive before?
Someone up there did look over your phone.
I was going to ask this in a new thread, but this seems like a good place: I've been searching a bit, and can't find conclusive evidence one way or the other: does the TMO version of the SG2 have gorilla glass or not?
And congrats on surviving the fall! That's encouraging either way! No screen protector?

the previous dive was into a puddle of water, and it was only from knee height, the water itself would have acted as a cushion, that time i was more concerned about it getting wet & short circuited than cracking the screen.

it did have a cheezy $2 ebay screen protector, those only protect from scratches not from a drop of that magnitude
as i do recall Galaxy 1 and Galaxy 2 line of phones uses Corning Gorilla glass
only the Nexus line does not use that
some one had the article listed a while back, don't recall the tittle but i'm sure you can find it if you dig long enough in the forum, or just google SGS2 + Gorilla glass

I didnt have a screen protector for first week, and it got scratched a lil -.- i had it in my pocket alone with nothing with it!
Gorilla glass might be resilient
but they are not really anti scratch
they are just harder to crack, but by no means invincible
even if you applied the Zagg indestructible screen protector
it will prevent the screen from shattering to pieces, but it will still crack if the hit is hard enough
Thanks - the reason I ask is because while the SG2 int'l version and att/sprint versions have Gorilla Glass, there was a lot of confusion as to whether the TMO version does as well. I found some discussion on it, but no conclusive answer. And TMO doesn't say it on the site (I don't think) and it doesn't say it in the paperwork with the phone...but I believe you

from what i understand they replace the smaller sodium ions with potassium in glass, what this does is that the potassium takes up more space and it produces a compressive stress on the glass, so there are less "imperfections" and therefore making it more scratch resistant/harder to crack
what's amazing to me is that peopel are saying their iphone is made of gorilla glass..yet their smaller form factor phone cracks a lot more easily than ours(and aluminium has nothing to do with this, aluminium is fairly soft itself..

Killing Zombies With My Samsung Galaxy S2

Isn't this supposed to be "like" Gorilla Glass?

I haven't put screen protectors on any phone in the last 2 years because I've never needed them. I handle with care and the phone is the only thing ever in a pocket.
Today I noticed on my GSM Nexus that there are light vertical scratches from the bottom of the screen. It reminds me a lot of the swirls/scratches you see on cars after a few washes. Head on and in daily use I don't see them but under a bright light or sun its very easy to see.
I'm not an idiot and obviously I somehow caused these scratches but what the hell could I have done to cause scratches all over fortified glass? Seems very suspicious and maybe Gorilla glass is much better.
It looks like I've been Samsunged.

It is possible that Gorilla Glass may have saved your phone in this case, but I have the exact scratches on my Droid X with GG. Also my Xoom. I ended up with screen protectors on them for this reason. Nothing is impossible to scratch. And once they get tiny scratches like that they are more susceptible to more.

It's 'like' gorilla glass perhaps, but nowhere near as effective. Gorilla glass my not be bullet-proof or 100% scratch resistant but i find it's much, much better as resisting scratches as compared to a normal screen
I first found this out after i traded in the SGS1 for the Nexus S - never used a screen protector for the gorilla glass of the SGS1 and my nexus S screen scratched within a couple of weeks. Had to use a screen protector.
Had a SGS2 and Sensation for a few months - never used a screen protector yet not a single scratch.
The iphone 4/4s with their 'fortified/hardened' glasses are even worse.
Needless to say that the first thing i did to my GN when i got it was apply a screen protector on it. Peace of mind.
Samsung is not advertising the glass on the Gnex as being "like" GG...I think Corning, makers of GG, would object strongly if Samsung did any such thing. If someone in a phone shop told you that, you really can't blame Samsung for it.
The Gnex doesn't have gorilla glass because the Gnex screen has a curve and GG is flat. To be honest, I've never seen advertising from Samsung that mentions the strength or durability of the glass on the Gnex at all, but I probably haven't seen every single Gnex ad that exists.
I got a scratch on my Gnex and then I got a screen protector. I was disappointed when I got a scratch, since I used my SGS "naked" and never had any damage to the screen. But I'm not so upset that I feel like I got ripped off.

What's weird is my scratches seem to be more to the screen's coating?? than to the glass? As in you see them if you face the phone top down but at an angle you can't see them. Almost reminds me of what scratches on a screen protector look like. It has no impact at all on the display when the screen is on or when there's not a bright overhead light. Even with a bright overhead light I have to look at the screen straight on so is it possible it's a scratch in whatever coating they use? Running my fingers doesn't feel anything either.
Weird. My scratch can easily be felt if you run a fingernail over it- or, at least, you could before I put on an XOskin (not meaning to spam on their behalf, but their screen protector fills existing scratches well). I didn't have any microscratches like you describe at all, and I think I'd be pissed about that too. Possibly a defective phone? Or a refurb that has a cheap screen protector on it?

I REFUSE to put a screen protector on, it's BS that we have to do that. I just added insurance so worst case if it gets much worse I'll pay the deductible and get a replacement. I absolutely hate screen protectors with a passion...last time I used one was on a Palm Pre and then a Hero. These beautiful phones and glass is meant to be felt by your fingertips - it's a whole different experience when you touch glass or plastic IMHO.
Same here, I refuse to put a screen protector.
I am happy with the Samsung "fortified" glass. I have been using my GN every single day in my pocket and I have yet to see a single scratch!
I have a few of those tiny scratches on my Nexus. Not really noticeable unless I really look for them so I'm not terribly bothered.

You should try Zagg. I'm serious, it doesn't interfere with the screen, and it absolutely works. Gorillia glass is tempered, meaning it's stronger than regular glass, just like a car windshield. That being said, it will eventually scratch if the conditions are right. Believe it or not, dust that settles on the glass will cause minor abrasions- couple that with being inside a pocket, it's a miracle that your phone isn't worse off.
I mean, the screen won't get scratched, and considering you have $600+ phone, I think the $12 on ebay is worth it. I'll tell you right now, the one made for the galaxy nexus covers the entire front, even the very bottom. Couple that with an otterbox commuter, or defender (with the built in screen protector removed) your phone will not get broken.

Oh and I don't flail around with it like a freakin' kraken.
Result? No scratches! Of course, the charger port is getting a bit worn in, but hey, not my fault the battery sucks.

If Zagg is still the same tacky, orange-peeled nonsense that it was when I got my Incredible, I'd pass on that in a minute. It protects well, but the tackiness is absolutely unbearable (I played with my Dinc last night and the touch/feel was nonsense), the orange peel can be unslightly to the OCD (ala me), and it starts to yellow after a couple of years.
BUT....diff'rent strokes.
Don't bother with wet application screen protectors. They all suck.
Get your self a brando UK ultra crystal. Can't even tell its on the phone. (And I hate screen protectors)
Takes like 14 days from Hong Kong to USA but its worth it.

yeah i have a "anti smudge" screen protector, but it has the rainbow effect sometimes, and it reduces the nice glossy appearance of my phone...and I'm one of those people who can't stand putting anything on my phone haha. any suggestions for good quality screen protectors that aren't too expensive?
I use best skins ever on all my stuff. 12 android phones about 6 tablets few laptops. Works great and you would have to take a knife to my phone to scratch it. Plus they are quite inexpensive. Bestskinsever.com

While it may not be gorilla glass, it's still pretty resillient. As far as screen protectors go, if you usually keep your phone near keys, coins, etc then yes buy one. If not then you should be ok. I used to use screen protectors on all my devices but I stopped believing in them because I usually take good care of my devices either eay and the screen protectors took away the beauty from the device.
It really is just a matter of personal opinion.

yeah, it really does take the beauty away from the device which is why I find myself constantly taking my case off and then feeling guilty and putting it on....its an endless cycle! so you don't think finger nails would be enough to scratch em?

A grain of sand can scratch the glass.
Yes it is scratch resilient.. but no where near scratch proof.

I was using ghost armor on my sgs2 until I bought the GNote and tried sgp ultra crystal ( or is it ultra clear? I forget) and loved it! You can't even tell I have something on my screen. So I took off my ghost armor on the sgs2 and tried the ultra crystal, in my opinion it's the best screen protector I have ever used, and I've tried a lot! If it wasn't for the cut out for the ffc you wouldn't be able to see it. No rainbow effect, no orange peel look, no finger prints, no screen distortion, just clear beautiful view, just like the naked screen. I also bought the oleophobic for the GNote, haven't tried it yet, but I can't find it for the sgs2.

I second sgp screen protectors. Excellent and easy to apply. Just be wary of doing the matte option if your looking for anti glare... It will cause it to have a grainy look that is very annoying... Their normal protector is excellent.

Not regarding screen protectors, but in the screen itself, it looks like there is a yellowish hue or tinting to all things which should be white. Any body got ideas?

I found out the same thing, only after putting the phone in my pocket with my keys. The screen with scratch so I highly recommend that you put on a screen protector
I'm glad this thread hasn't gone retarded with a bunch of assumptions and stuff.
Gorilla glass is just a name. other tempered/reinforced glass can be designed the same way or even better but is not called "gorilla glass".
Like others have mentioned, the glass is pretty sturdy and can protect it from scratches from most day to day objects and items that you use. However, sand in your pocket or on the table can scratch the **** out of the glass because it is compiled by a lot of different minerals.. shoot there might be even diamond in it.
I'm sure most active users on XDA take care of our devices and will be annoyed by the smallest scratches on the screen, so I would recommend a screen protector. It definitely helps prevent scratches and add an extra amount of "cushion" from small drops to prevent shattering your screen.
BTW I was fortunate enough to buy inexpensive screen protectors (like 5 for $4) on amazon and they turned out to be like the SGP ones. They were actually some of the best screen protectors I ever used, it felt identical to the glass. Just a thought if you decide to go the cheap route that there are some good and inexpensive generic ones.

I bought it from a seller and not one of those stores lol. You know how Amazon allows you too choose Sellers? Yeah i chose him because he was selling it for really cheap and located in California... Needed something quick. I thought i was going to use it temporarily and get a better one later on. I'm sticking with these 5 lol. I'll try to find the seller when im on a computer. Doubt he has more though.

Is it nessessory to get a screen protector for SGS3

Is it nessessory for me to get a screen protector for my new SGS3?
I heavily rely on the sensitive feel on the screen, and i just don't want to sacrifice its original beauty. i heard the screen on galaxy s3 use gorilla glass, need no protector any more, but i still worry to see scratches.
How about u guys? will u buy a screen protector?
I have a zagg screen cover (regular, not full body) but didn't care for it too much. It was put on perfectly (or as perfect as it could get) and I felt like it did dull the screen colors down a bit
I recently took it off when my Diztronic case came in and now just carry a micro fiber cloth with me. If the phone goes in my pocket I can slid that right over the screen
So I'd say no screen protector. If you have an extra micro fiber cloth around I would just use that

If you don't get one, you will be Nesses-Sorry (Title spelling joke. Oh, I am so original)
In all seriousness, no, it's not. The glass is pretty tough, it may get a few little scratches, maybe one or 2 big ones over the life of the phone. BUT if you're OCD about keeping the glass pristine, you want one, because gorilla glass is not invincible.
I got one for the future resale value bonus of "No Scratches", and as long as you get a smooth dry application screen protector, you won't notice a degradation of the feel of the surface of the phone.

which kind of screen protector did u get? cuz i think smooth ones will definitly influence the touch feeling and sensitivity. i play games a lot, so i hope to maintian its sensitivity with no scraches.
Iv never used a screen protector on any of my glass screen phones starting with 3gs on launch day. Iv never had any scratches at all. My right pocket is for my phone never anything else and I never set it down. Its in my hand or pocket

You dont need it, the screen is gorilla glass and the protection will make it look less vibrant and feel cheap

agreed! I accidentally used a Starbucks napkin to clean the screen from my greasy hands and fukin regret it dearly. My screen got three pretty long noticeable scratches (visible only when the screen is off and in the light) bothers me knowing that it's there and how stupid of me to have used a recycle napkin made with "at least 40% post-consumer fiber".

Though everyone has an opinion I think that its a must. Don't be fooled by Gorilla Glass it is not scratch proof. I baby my electronics and had never scratched a screen on any device I had owned. Then I look at my Galaxy Note and there are 2 scratches from NO-WHERE. Just poof no drop no bump...
So to be cautious I will always have one now.
I had a package of cheap screen protectors from 2007.. probably not even made for touch phones! But they fit so we installed them. The touchscreen works great and the screen looks fine. I can hardly tell it's there.
I know it'd drive me crazy if I got a scratch on my phone and had to look at for the next 2 years I'd definitely recommend buying a screen protector! I'm sure anything being sold today is better than what we've got installed So hopefully you won't even notice it and can protect your screen
I ALWAYS get one. If it makes it feel cheap, you probably got a cheap and/or crappy screen protector.
I like Martin Fields and have used Seidio ones as well. ZAGG (I think it is) you can get a Best Buy and other places SUCK. They have a sticky or rather rubber feel to them so your fingers don't glide smoothly and probably are what give people the "cheap" feel. The first two I mentioned feel identical to the glass. You won't even know they're there. I get a new phone once a year and never had more than a scratch or two on the protector only. Peel it off ... brand new phone still.
I figure it also helps against breakage since there is an extra layer of protection reinforcing the structure. Kind of like laminated glass. A friend got a giant gouge in his RAZR. GIANT wound to the screen protector, but it didn't make it through to the glass surface. No cracks or even scratches ... to the glass.
I stopped investing in them. My iPhone 4 was without for a year and no scratches. The protectors had scratches but they aren't as durable as the screen

What the hell are those napkins made of? Dear lord.
Definitely get a screen protector. Get a dry install screen protector that is clear and I guarantee that you won't notice it. I recommend SGP Nano Clear for this phone. It is very easy to install and works very well with cases. The only drawback is that it leaves about 1 mm or so uncovered around the edges, but fortunately this will be covered by most cases.
If you are wondering about getting a screen protector, then get one. You may regret it otherwise.

I got the Steinhill Ultra Crystal. It's a fingerprint magnet, but so it the rest of the phone, feels just like the glass though.
Yes get a screen protector. I highly recommend that you get one. Gorilla glass 2 is not scratch proof. I already scratched my screen and my HTC evo 4g lte screen. :-(
Why would you not get a screen protector for this phone? This is not a cheap phone so do yourself a favor and get you a good screen protector. You touch the screen whenever you use the phone and everytime you touch it, you risk scratching it due to dirt being on your hands. Protect your investment!
Normally I purchase wet application protectors from bestskinsever.com but wet application protectors do not play well with tpu cases for this phone.
I recommend the Reearth dry screen protector. You can find it on Amazon for 11.99 and it includes 2 protectors. It's an awesome protector and you won't even know it's on your phone.

No ...I'm not getting one,..I dropped my s2 down a stairs, was hit head on by a drunk driver , found my phone about 200 feet from my vehicle on the road, it had one tiny scratch that you could barely see,..and the S3 has a stronger screen, but its whatever you wanna do
