[Q] S-Off Tool - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just wondering if there was a Simple S-Off Tool? I had to upgrade my HBOOT for 0.76 to 0.97 to install the Anthrax Kernel. It appears that I lost S-Off in the process, however, I am still able to Reboot from the ROM to recovery and I was also still able to Flash a new Radio via Recovery with the new HBOOT. So do I need to have S-Off if I only flash Signed Zip's?

Have you tried flashing unrevoked forever through recovery? You may need to downgrade your radio for it to work, but it's worth a shot.

Unrevoked-forever will work for all radios not above 2.15.00.11.19, and should work with Hboot 0.97.

How do I downgrade my Radio. I went to Caulks thread but it says I must be S-OFF to flash via recovery for the Radio. I tried it anyway it seemed to worked correctly but when I booted up the Phone and checked it was still the Latest Radio that I Updated.

I had to do ALL this...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20960412&postcount=380

Revolutionary is the only way to root the new hboot. Just do it, I just did it on my replacement from Asurion, and it only took about 5 minutes, very easy.

He isn't on the latest hboot so he has to downgrade to froyo with a pc36img that has the old radio included. Then he has to go to unrevoked.com and do the unrevoked3 to root over.

Ran Unrevoked S-On, still showing s-off

Hi, I need to return my evo but I have s-off using unrevoked forever. I ran the latest s-0n tool through recovery (latest Clockwork) and it appears that everything went ok when looking at the log as the s-on ran. But now when I verify it still says S-off. Can anyone assist?

Thanks for the link. Ran the s-on about 20 times and still s-off. Guess I'm bringing it in s-0ff and chancing it. Hopfully they don't need to replace and can just fix my power button without ever needing to see the s-off
damn you even flashed the pc36img in bootloader and you still cant get s-on? huh... Hopefully it all works out for ya! Goodluck man

Yup, s on first. I'm not sure why its not taking. Maybe download it again, and possibly use a different recovery to try flashing it? Try using rom manager to flash Among RA, then try again.

I'm not sure, but I think after running s-ON and then the RUU, it'll show up as S-On.
I know it did when I ran RUU last week, after running the S-On tool, but tbh, I didn't check before running the RUU.

You do want to be sure that the s on tool works. The RUU wont turn s on if you've used unrevoked forever. You'll end up stock, s off, and no recovery to flash the s on tool.

Exactly what I was thinking so I got a zip of my recovery from the unrevoked site to run from hboot since I still had s-off which would allow me to run the zip just incase. I would be able to get a recovery again if running the stock image didn't help.
Anyway, I ran the PC36IMG image with S-off and noticed that when going though the install the HBOOT section installed, installation stopped then just went back to HBOOT where it inspected the PC36IMG again. Noticed right when that happened that it was back to S-ON. Current HBOOT is 93, not sure if it was different before and needed to be on 93.
If your hboot is version .76 it is s-off by default. No need to use unrevoked for anything.

Make LCD Incredible S-On

I have an LCD Incredible with radio version 2.15.10.07.07 and I'm trying to return it back to stock so I can sell it to a friend. I have already flashed the stock unrooted ROM (PB31IMG.zip) and it gave me back the stock recovery, I read that I should flash unrevoked-forever-son.zip via CWM but my radio isn't on the supported list and I don't want to brick the device. What should I do?

Go here and flash the 7.28 Froyo radio http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=18 that should do the trick. This is assuming you flashed the Froyo RUU.
I flashed the Gingerbread image, I didn't use the RUU because I was having problems connecting.
I believe you can still flash the Froyo radio. If not just flash the Froyo Ruu, you can also get the PB31IMG file for it at pvillcomp.com. Then flash the 7.28 radio. If you do this, the phone should receive the OTA gingerbread update.
Thanks, that's what I figured. I just downgraded to Froyo to be on the safe side.
Edit: I just flashed the S-On zip via CWM and was curious if it would replace CWM with the stock recovery, it didn't. So now I have a phone with S-On and CWM, what should I do?
Go here, grab the stock recovery and flash it in Hboot. I'm not sure if you will have to reroot first or not. Give it a shot and let me know.

You should be able to run the PB13IMGwhatver zip again and it will give you the Stock Recovery and Stock Rom.
My advice would be to run the newest Gingerbread Stock PBIMG so as to not have to downgrade, then boot, then download OTA, then run that and so on. Simply flash one PBIMG and be over with it
Hope this helps....
Yea, I figured that's probably what I could do. I downloaded the stock recovery and tried to flash it but it wouldn't go. HBoot detected it but never asked me if I wanted to apply it.

Thats because your s-on now. S-off is what enables us to flash radios and custom recoveries like clockwork. You need to do and ruu, either a PB31IMG.zip thru hboot, or the ruu.exe with a pc. That is the only way to get the stock recovery now that your s-on.

s-off / on is not the same as root. A phone can be rooted and still be s-on. However the only way to flash an unsigned file thru hboot on the incredible is with s-off. As far as i know htc has never officialy released a signed recovery only file. So in order to get the stock recovery while s-on you would have to use a signed ruu. Thats all i was trying to say.

[Q] How to UNROOT EVO 4G UNREVOKED without usb??

I used revoked3 to root my evo
hboot 0.97.0000
radio 2.15.00.09.01
build# 3.29.651.5
Used metrodroid rom
I have turned the S 0n back on and cant get passed the bootloader finding the "correct" PC36IMG.zip file. it doesnt find it and says wrong image. HELP
What image are you trying to flash? You will need the actual s-on tool from unrEVOked site, just using recovery to toggle doesn't really do it. Then you will have to flash a stock non rooted ROM. Then run HTC software update. RUU is much easier, why no USB?

since your on 2.3.5 you most likely have hboot 2.18. Your root method is going to be HTCdev.com. After you s-on unlocked with HTC dev you can either downgrade to a earlier version like froyo or GB and root with unrevoked or revolutionary or you can stay s-on unlocked but lose out on certain things because you wont be fully NAND unlocked(s-off) just unlocked s-on

I would rather use revolutionary as I've rooted a few other people's evo's with that method and it went fairly smooth. What im confused about is the hboot. I have to get the hboot to atleast 2.16.0001 and simply flashing a GB rom won't do that right? So do I need to find the radio thread and find an hboot file and can I even downgrade the hboot from 2.18 to 2.16 in order to use revolutionary to obtain s-off so that i can go back to what i was used to?

Simply flashing a rom wont affect radios ect. With S-on unlocked you CANT flash radios or hboots so you have to do a certain process in order to downgrade. I have it to where it is currently running Froyo. I followed all of the instructions. I'm not trying to root it using unrevoked as after downgrading, the root access was taken away. The unrevoked app pushes the recovery and sits at a status of "installing unrevoked3 service..." and never finishes. That's where i'm stuck at. I'm not new to rooting, just didn't have to go about it this way the last time. If unrevoked keeps failing, then I will give revolutionary a try if it supports froyo.

Do I need s-off to flash roms?

I just unlocked my cousins evo 4g. I was wondering if I need s-off to flash Roms. If so. Can someone give me a link to a tutorial .
Well, you need Clockworkmod but you can't install clockworkmod without S-off, my Evo actually has S-on with clockworkmod and I can install roms no problem I don't even know how S turned back on but it did lol... It's really easy to google and find a guide on rooting/turning s-off but regardless here ya go, it's a list of a ton of guides for the Evo and rooting involves turning s-off.

If you are like me, and would rather visually see it happen, go check out the beloved YouTube. There are lots of videos of people showing you exactly how to do it, step by step.

Good Luck!
Unrevoked rev works well to root it if you didn't take the latest OTA Clockwork mod 4.0 works well for it afterwards to flash and wipe.
If you are s-on (OOW unlocked) on hboot 2.18 u can used fastboot to flash a recovery, you should be using Amon RA on the evo and not cwm or twrp. If you are on hboot 2.15/.16 you need to use revolutionary.io to achieve s-off and gain recovery and the flash SU and SU binaries. Any hboot prior to 2.16 you use unrevoked or one of its variants to get s-off. If you're hboot 2.18 s-on locked you use htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader from there you can use fastboot to flash recovery or you can follow captain throwbacks guide to downgrade your hboot to an earlier version and achieve s-off. With s-on unlocked you can do (almost) anything you can do with s-off except you won't be able to flash PC36IMG.zip files, which include recoveries, radio updates, splashscreens, and RUU files.

Hey -EViL-KoNCEPTz-
You got me kinda confused now. I thought the new CWM got the problems fixed with clearing the cache? If not, then is the Amon RA safe to use, it hasn't been updated in for ever. If you still recommend Amon RA, how do I change to that?
Also, I still have s-on.
Mine says:
*** UNLOCKED***
Supersonic EVT3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.18.0001
How do I get it to S-OFF or do I need to?
I've been flashing back and forth to different Roms for a few days now. I'm still trying to find the one I like where everything works.
I'm in the same boat as custm2007 except it's on my friends phone. What would be the best way to get s-off after rooting it or do I even need to? I'll be doing everything for him so he won't be flashing much at all.
Do this
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...-18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-
To actually answer the question... No you do not need to be s-off to flash rom's. Once unlocked you can flash a recovery through fastboot and flash rom's to your hearts content. This is currently how my phone is, and I have no complaints. Please see my blog for a tutorial for flashing recovery and su binaries.
