[Q] How to UNROOT EVO 4G UNREVOKED without usb?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I used revoked3 to root my evo
hboot 0.97.0000
radio 2.15.00.09.01
build# 3.29.651.5
Used metrodroid rom
I have turned the S 0n back on and cant get passed the bootloader finding the "correct" PC36IMG.zip file. it doesnt find it and says wrong image. HELP

What image are you trying to flash? You will need the actual s-on tool from unrEVOked site, just using recovery to toggle doesn't really do it. Then you will have to flash a stock non rooted ROM. Then run HTC software update. RUU is much easier, why no USB?

[Q] (Q) What method do I need to use to root?

Android Version 2.2
Baseband Version 2.15.00
Kernal Version 2.6.32.15-ge2f608
Build number 3.29.651.5
Software number 3.29.651.5
PRI version 1.77_003
Hardware version 0002
HBoot 0.97
Radio 2.15.00
Tried rooting with unrevoked 3.21. At the end of the process is says "Failed to flash recovery image." Recovery image clockwordMod Recovery.
I had rooted previously and then updated and lost root. I still have superuser permission app.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have gone through many of the previous threads, but have not been able to figure out why the unrevoked method would not work for me considering my HBoot is not 2.02.
Thanks!!!

when you boot into bootloader, do you have s-on or s-off?
s-on

try running unrevoked forever to take your s-on to s-off...read below first
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever
Thanks. Will try and see what happens.

I do not have a custom recovery. can I still use unrevoked forever?
Sent from my PC36100 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Maybe try downloading and running an official 3.29.651.5 RUU and then try unrevoked3 again to root.
yes if you do not have a custom recovery download a RUU from this link...http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
after downloading the ruu...plug your phone in and run it and then it will revert your phone back to stock...then you can try agian to root
good luck
My phone is running stock. I have never flashed a ROM. I had used unrevoked previously. I did not save any of the settings. When I updated, I lost root. My HBoot is 0.97, so I am unsure why unrevoked will not work for me. I do not have the ability to change ROMs or for a custom recovery. I do not have ClockworkMod recovery. So I do not think I can use unrevoked forever, or use any other ROMs.

Rooting help

OK so my evo has the 2.10 bootloader and software version 3.70. 651.1. I tried using the Z4root method to temporarily root then flash Unrevoked Forever but hit a snag. Though the temp root works and I flashed clockworkmod and Ra recoveries, when I try to boot into recovery to flash Unrevoked Forever I just get the phone with the red triangle and exclamation mark. I'm assuming this has to do with having the newest bootloader from the latest ota but any guidance would be appreciated.
dont use z4root for the 2.10 bootloader...not a fool proof method of rooting...you need to return your evo back to stock by downloading a ruu from this site and plugging your evo into the computer and boot into boot loader and run whtat you downloaded on your desktop ....http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Supersonic
once you have the evo returned to stock, use this root method to root hboot 2.10
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045
this by far is the best method to root hboot 2.10
What is the point of running the Ruu? Would running an older ruu change the hboot back or leave it as-is?
Running the ruu that came with your phone will return your phone back to stock out of the box so you have a clean slate to use the root guide I gave you a link to...the root guide I gave u is the only reliable method for hboot 2.10
The reason you are having problems rooting with unrevoked is because unrevoked does not work with hboot 2.02 or 2.10

I was rooted on 3.29 and unrooted so I could install the OTA 3.70. Unfortunately, hboot still shows S-OFF, so now I can't root or unroot. Will flashing the stock 3.70 RUU flip S-OFF back to S-ON so I can root again?
In order for you to switch between s on and s off google search unrevoked forever and use their tool to toggle s on and s off

I had 2.02 hboot then I rooted and then derooted bc of issues. I noticed my hboot changed to 2.10. I followed the savior method and use z4root and all is well. I had zero issues.

I tried unrevoked-forever-son.zip, but it looks like it runs from recovery, which I can't get into. When I try, I get the red exclamation point and can only get out with the volume up and power buttons.

[Q] Does PC36IMG Also Contain A "Stock" Recovery?

This is a simple question that I have:
If I were to want to return to bone stock -- I mean like, fresh out of the cardboard box -- on my EVO, would using Bootloader to flash PC36IMG.zip replace EVERYTHING, including Amon-Ra's recovery image?
Just curious, and unfortunately there seems to be some FUD in some of the threads I've seen about unrooting and such.
Any knowledgeable folk have an answer?
T.I.A.
A "stock" recovery is no recovery. So if you unrooted, ran the ruu, ect, and tried to boot into recovery, you'd be met with the triangle and a ! indicating no recovery.

Aha!!!
Follow-up Question: I'm on a Mac and the RUU's I've seen are all in .exe files. Assuming I have the latest radios, do I need an RUU or is PC36IMG sufficient?

PC36IMG is sufficient. Same results as RUU. Just be sure to turn your S-on before running the PC36IMG, using the Unrevoked S on tool (that is if you ever used Unrevoked forever at any point in time)

I don't know if when you download it, it would change to the correct extension; you could always try changing it. Either way, you're in luck.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip
A link to my dropbox of a 3.70 RUU in PC36IMG form, just put on your sdcard and flash in the bootloader.
PC3GIMG.zip is just the name of the file that hboot looks for to flash, they are all different! Some PC36IMGs have recoveries, some have radios, some have ROMs, etc... You need to be careful which one you flash, and KNOW for sure whats in it before you do because you run the risk of messing up your phone if you flash the wrong one!

Yep, I rooted with unrEVOked, so I'd have to do UnrEVOked S-ON first.
Thank you guys...good stuff here.

Correct, then the PC36IMG and you'll be all set.
So what is the difference between an RUU and a PC36IMG.zip? My hardware 0003 evo has an 2.10 hboot and the baseband of 2.15. 00.11.19
If I want to unroot my phone back to stock out of the box what file do I need? And yes I know to do the s-on first...

The RUU (ROM Update Utility) is IN a PC36IMG.zip.
Turn S-ON back on.
Go into Bootloader.
Allow it to detect.
Update (make sure you have the correct PC36IMG.zip).
not to hi-jack the thread but say HTC/Sprint did upgrade to the EVO 4G to GB could i flash the "stock" recovery without running the ruu and wiping everything? i use stock rom but like the features Root and Amon Ra brings havent found a custom rom that like everything seems to be themed and not my style.

Again, "stock" recovery is no recovery. And if you were to upgrade, you'd have to root, and you can keep the rooted stock rom. You can flash CM7 which is basically stock android AOSP, not themed. Can always flash back if you don't like it, and everything is working.
Yeah I know about cm used it on pretty much everything g1 nexus mt4g etc I like some stuff sense have to offer over asop I always end up flashing to see the new stuff I prefer stock android but the usb transfer speed is killing me atm waiting for that to get fixed and I understand stock is recovery guess ima have to titanium backup which works but some issues thanks tho I try stuff nandroid is my bestfriend in android

Did you use unrEVOked to turn S-ON? If so, and please correct me if I'm wrong, to my understanding you can only use that method if you used unrEVOked to root originally. In which case, you may need to use a different method. Perhaps the reason for S-OFF coming back.

[Q] EVO 4G: Need to install stock Bootloader

Hello XDA,
I have been trying to unroot my phone, but have been running into a problem. I was able to restore my backup of the official Sprint ROM I took after using to Revolutionary tool. But I cannot figure out how to install a stock bootloader.
I tried using the files at; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801568 but when I load up the gootloader and press volume up to have it install the bootloader, it says "[1] Bootloader - bypassed" and asks me if I would like to restart.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My phones info;
HBOOT 6.16.1002
Radio 1.36.00.04.02
Security S-OFF
Android 2.3.3
Baseband 1.36.00.04.02
Kernel 2.6.35.10-gc0a661b
To the best of my knowledge it can't be unrooted yet.

According to this site, all hboot versions after 0.97 are not downgradeable, however, since you have the 'international' hboot version, I'm not sure if it applies, but I am 'assuming' it does.

[Q] S-Off Tool

Just wondering if there was a Simple S-Off Tool? I had to upgrade my HBOOT for 0.76 to 0.97 to install the Anthrax Kernel. It appears that I lost S-Off in the process, however, I am still able to Reboot from the ROM to recovery and I was also still able to Flash a new Radio via Recovery with the new HBOOT. So do I need to have S-Off if I only flash Signed Zip's?
Have you tried flashing unrevoked forever through recovery? You may need to downgrade your radio for it to work, but it's worth a shot.

Unrevoked-forever will work for all radios not above 2.15.00.11.19, and should work with Hboot 0.97.

How do I downgrade my Radio. I went to Caulks thread but it says I must be S-OFF to flash via recovery for the Radio. I tried it anyway it seemed to worked correctly but when I booted up the Phone and checked it was still the Latest Radio that I Updated.
I had to do ALL this...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20960412&postcount=380

Revolutionary is the only way to root the new hboot. Just do it, I just did it on my replacement from Asurion, and it only took about 5 minutes, very easy.
He isn't on the latest hboot so he has to downgrade to froyo with a pc36img that has the old radio included. Then he has to go to unrevoked.com and do the unrevoked3 to root over.
