I have a 2-3 weeks old gnex unrooted with stockrom.
I want to root and switch rooms, but keep my app data.
Is there anyway to do this?
Google has a backup service, but i have no idea how it works.
There are mainly 4-5 app datas i want to keep. incl Wifi data, gta III, World of goo...
Is there anyway to root without data wipe?
Thank you
You can try this or you may have success using mybackup from the market. I'd have thought that the phone could be rooted without unlocking but a little searching seems to reveal the opposite.
Thanks will try that! Cheers

I am switching both carriers and phones. I am moving from ATT with the SG2 to T-Mobile to the SG2.
I have invested tons of time setting up my ATT version and loads of data in my apps. I am not worried about the Mail/Exchange part I realize I will need to redo that part. What I am hoping someone can help me with a way to move over is the following: (Also I am NOT ROOTED)
1. Touchwiz screens
2. Application data from Market downloaded apps
I realize I can reinstall the apps but the data from the apps is my issue. I track expenses etc using several apps.
TIA,
ED

a couple of things re: data
as far as emails goes, if you are hooked up to Exchange Server or Gmail
your email resides on the server side, and stays there.
but if you are using POP3 emails that have been downloaded to the phone and removed from the server, then you will be stuck, unless you get Titanium Backup (which needs root) to migrate the emails over to the new phone

Well thats not the answer I was hoping for. I would prefer to not root install Titanium and reflash since I am returning the SG2 back to ATT. I don't want something to go wrong.
I'm still hoping for a better answer.

What this guy said.
I have an Evo 3G roted with a ton of apps. Can I take my Titanuium backup from that phone and restore selective apps and data to my G3.
I have a couple apps that I no longer have the credentials for to re download from the app store without paying for them again.

You should be able to do that. You will need to be rooted on the GS3 in order to restore. I was able to restore some apps from my Evo 4G to the GS3 using Titanium. Not sure if all apps can be restored or not. I would not try to restore any system setting or data. That could be a problem.
If you're rooted, use titanium and it should work. Just restore the apps & app data, and not system data. Also, don't. Restore them as a batch operation, do just 2 or 3 at a time, and test them, then continue.

I can vouch and say that it does work. I moved from the HTC Evo 4G OG and used Titanium Backup to bring all of my old apps and data to my new phone. You will have to have BOTH devices rooted in order to use the backup as well as the SD card or the information.
Yes, I went from an Epic 4G to an S3 using MyBackup Pro. Restored all the app data. As long as you don't try to restore the basic system data you should be fine.
Great, that is what I was hoping for
I also went from an Evo 3D to the SGS3. Just make sure that you don't restore data that was specific for the Evo. For instance, if you have setcpu, don't restore the data because that was specifically for the E3D. Otherwise, you won't have any problems.

I lost my phone last night (yes I'm an idiot). Tried installing Plan B this morning but it doesn't appear to work on Jelly Bean
I'm running 4.1.1 rooted. Phone has password lock on it.
Are there any alternatives I could explore before my battery completely dies and I'm completely screwed?
Also, for future reference, what are the best apps for locating devices? I miss "Find my iPhone"
Thanks y'all

Can a thief just go ahead and do a complete wipe and you're not completely helpless?

At the end of the day, my job can remote wipe the phone, plus I have a password that's not 1234, so I'm not concerned about my data being compromised, I just want the damn phone back. I love/need wi-fi hotspot (it's amazing for work)
Hello everyone,
I rooted my Note 4 yesterday and discovered this morning I've lost meta data transfer to my bt audio in the car. I'm still figuring out this as the idea of rooting my phone and getting rid of all of the Sprint bloat is very appealing. However I have not up to this point loaded any Custom Rom. Once I do this, should I expect the meta data info to come back or is this a feature I have lost? Apologies in advance if this has been covered as I did a few searches for meta data and couldn't find a thread. Thank you in advance.

Well, it is very unlikely rooting your phone would cause that issue. Think very carefully about any changes you made after rooting. A change is probably at the root (couldn't resist) of the problem. Hope you figure it out.
I've never had Meta Data info with my note 4 in my Acura TL. I had it with my Galaxy S4.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
JHill: I think you're on to something. So I was on here yesterday, reading intently that some folks had gotten galaxy tools and wifi router working via ROOT. So that was the last push I needed to root my phone.
However as you responded I noticed my meta data was no longer there. After reading your post, I deleted those 2 apps and amazingly...all is well with my bluetooth audio streaming meta data info. You guys are the smart ones..so I don't have a clue, but it's back after I deleted those 2 apps.
Masbirdies: I've always had meta data on my Sprint Note 4 in my 2013 E350. However when I first bought the phone, there was a bug that the meta data didn't refresh after each song. Samsung was aware and Sprint issued a OS update about a month later and everything was fine until my issue from this morning. Happy to say all is working again. My wife has an X3 and meta data works fine on my note driving her car as well. So maybe it's the Acura ??
Because of this very reason I do not remove bloat..that and the fact that storage on the phones is huge and you have an sd slot. What do you gain? A couple of hundred MBs? And what else did you gain? Aggravation and lost time. There are apps out there that let you freeze apps. I personally bought Titanium Backup..well worth it for the use I get out of it over the past 4+ years of rooting and flashing. If you freeze an app and it messes something up you defrost it...not spend time hunting for files you removed. Back in the Epic 4G days it was necessary to debloat because there was only 512MB of space to use on the phone...but now 16GB or more.

Great point Kenny. One that I'm learning the hard way. I was contemplating unrooting my phone for this reason. The was my first and probably last time for rooting my phone. Just seems like I haven't gained anything.
**Full Disclosure** I have not loaded a custom ROM, so simply going off Kenny's point above about the PIA for me getting certain things back the way they we're.

Rooting has many advantages, such as using a great app like Titanium Backup, or Flashify, or Quick Boot, as well as many others. Hopefully soon they will figure out Xposed for Sammy phones and Lollipop and that will open a whole world of modifications you can choose. The best thing about root and custom recoveries is the ability to back up your phone, all the things in user data and your configuration..so when you mess with it and screw it up (we all did and do trying new things) we can instantly restore to the point when everything worked. The downside to rooting? It is a hassle to get OTAs and updates. You have to jump through some hoops.
Happy flashing!!!!
My phone is running really slow and I'd like to do a full reset. What are some ways I can backup everything in my phone but keep texts and stuff

Kies doesn't really backup the device, it just copies out media. Backup implies "data" as much as any other adjective I can think of and app data is one thing Kies does NOT backup for sure. Samsung "Smart Switch" is a sham for the same reason and they don't make that clear. A less informed user wouldn't find out until they tried to "restore" to a new device and found that much of their app-data (preferences and game-progress mostly) is not there.
Well without root I don't believe there is any other way to save app data such as game-progress and preferences as you stated. If there is a way, then what would you suggest?

adb backup is the only method I know that doesn't require root. Same method that Helium relies on (which I am now trying), though i think it's taking another approach to getting the .ab file because it seems to be storing on the device, not desktop just yet.
My adb issue doesn't seem to be preventing it from making progress, but it's slow and not remotely done so I can't claim success yet.
Give Helium a try. No root required, and while it's not Titanium Backup it's pretty solid for just backing up & restoring apps.
(of course, now I see it was already mentioned)
I o ow this is an old thread. But, her is how I did it with mine. Download Titanium Backup and SuperSUme. Next, Kingroot. Root with Kingroot, go to SuperSUme, run it. Then go to Titanium Backup. Run that, back everything up. When it is done, move all other the files in its chosen directory onto a safe place. Like a computer or thumb drive. Reset your phone, then after you have set up your Google account, download Titanium Backup, SuperSUme and Kingroot. Put your Titanium files back where they were before. Re Root, and restore your files one by one. That way you do not add unnecessary ones back. Also, after a rest of the phone, you might have to run the Ddebloater script again to stop the OTA's. I'm sure that the OP has by now figured things out. So this step by step is for those that are looking to do the same. If any one else knows of better, by all means, let us know.

Truthfully, if the "Chinese" want into your phone. They will be in there. Think about it. Where are your phones made and programmed? Yup, that's right, China. Now, does the Chinese government have a history of providing that they can not be trusted? Absolutely. But, sorry to burst your bubble. Every government has thus far proven to be the same. And the United states and British governments are worse. So, try to hide whatever it is we want to hide. Doesn't matter. There are probably more back doors into your life regarding our electronic devices than we can imagine. And there are soon to be more when legislation passes a bill locking down firmware for WiFi routers and cellular routers. Of which, our phones have both. Will they be locked down to protect us? They say so. But, we all know that it will be so that the development community can not patch these back doors. Any way, I went off point a bit. I have been using Kingroot and SuperSuMe. A lot of us have been. Does it put us at a potential risk? Yup, potentially it does. But, I want my data to be backed up so that just in case. For now, the pros out weigh the potential cons. But, to each their own.
On a somewhat side note. I use to think similar to you on this subject. But, if the dev community offers a way to back up what the corporate community has failed to provide to us, so be it. If the XDA community has thus far not found any major fault with our Chinese friends software, then I am OK with it. Though, if we find out that this software has been doing potentially bad things, then I would hope that the development community would investigate and destroy them. By the way, if you have the means, keep sensitive data on a separate device. If possible. Maybe one that only connects via WiFi.
