[Q] Rooted my Note 4 yesterday and have lost meta data - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I rooted my Note 4 yesterday and discovered this morning I've lost meta data transfer to my bt audio in the car. I'm still figuring out this as the idea of rooting my phone and getting rid of all of the Sprint bloat is very appealing. However I have not up to this point loaded any Custom Rom. Once I do this, should I expect the meta data info to come back or is this a feature I have lost? Apologies in advance if this has been covered as I did a few searches for meta data and couldn't find a thread. Thank you in advance.

Well, it is very unlikely rooting your phone would cause that issue. Think very carefully about any changes you made after rooting. A change is probably at the root (couldn't resist) of the problem. Hope you figure it out.

I've never had Meta Data info with my note 4 in my Acura TL. I had it with my Galaxy S4.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
JHill: I think you're on to something. So I was on here yesterday, reading intently that some folks had gotten galaxy tools and wifi router working via ROOT. So that was the last push I needed to root my phone.
However as you responded I noticed my meta data was no longer there. After reading your post, I deleted those 2 apps and amazingly...all is well with my bluetooth audio streaming meta data info. You guys are the smart ones..so I don't have a clue, but it's back after I deleted those 2 apps.
Masbirdies: I've always had meta data on my Sprint Note 4 in my 2013 E350. However when I first bought the phone, there was a bug that the meta data didn't refresh after each song. Samsung was aware and Sprint issued a OS update about a month later and everything was fine until my issue from this morning. Happy to say all is working again. My wife has an X3 and meta data works fine on my note driving her car as well. So maybe it's the Acura ??

Because of this very reason I do not remove bloat..that and the fact that storage on the phones is huge and you have an sd slot. What do you gain? A couple of hundred MBs? And what else did you gain? Aggravation and lost time. There are apps out there that let you freeze apps. I personally bought Titanium Backup..well worth it for the use I get out of it over the past 4+ years of rooting and flashing. If you freeze an app and it messes something up you defrost it...not spend time hunting for files you removed. Back in the Epic 4G days it was necessary to debloat because there was only 512MB of space to use on the phone...but now 16GB or more.

Great point Kenny. One that I'm learning the hard way. I was contemplating unrooting my phone for this reason. The was my first and probably last time for rooting my phone. Just seems like I haven't gained anything.
**Full Disclosure** I have not loaded a custom ROM, so simply going off Kenny's point above about the PIA for me getting certain things back the way they we're.

Rooting has many advantages, such as using a great app like Titanium Backup, or Flashify, or Quick Boot, as well as many others. Hopefully soon they will figure out Xposed for Sammy phones and Lollipop and that will open a whole world of modifications you can choose. The best thing about root and custom recoveries is the ability to back up your phone, all the things in user data and your configuration..so when you mess with it and screw it up (we all did and do trying new things) we can instantly restore to the point when everything worked. The downside to rooting? It is a hassle to get OTAs and updates. You have to jump through some hoops.
Happy flashing!!!!

[Q] Cannot root new Incredible

Hello- I've been reading around this site and I am not sure if what I've found is accurate, I could use the help of those that are informed.
I'm new to Android having only gotten my first incredible yesterday. I tried using unrevoked (v. 3.21 to the best of my knowledge) on windows after installing the appropriate drivers and was unsuccessful two or three times. It would hang at waiting for root or 'we can't get root,' were the two messages I'd receive.
I reset to factory from the bootloader and tried this again on my Mac machine- this was different but still unsuccessful. It would still say 'waiting for root,' however the phone itself was stuck powered on with nothing on the screen. It took me unplugging the mini USB and removing the battery to finally get it to power back on and show something on the screen.
With that said, is there an update from Verizon that causes unrevoked to no longer work? I read that somewhere but am unsure how recent the information is.
Secondly- what I really want to do is enable the Wifi Hotspot feature without having to fork MORE money over to Verizon- am I going down the right path to enable this?
Lastly- can someone please provide a good thread I can read up on regarding handling future updates for Android OS- I assume OTA updates are disabled once rooted, how do I continue to make sure my OS is up to date when this is disabled?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You most likely have the latest OTA update, which patches the exploit that UnrEVOked 3.21 used to get root. They are currently working on a new exploit for the recent OTA update now.
If you want free wifi tethering, you don't exactly need to root. This'll do the trick: http://www.tweak3d.net/forums/showthread.php?54386-Android-OS-htc-incredible-free-wifi-tethering
Usually the OTA's get incorporated into later ROM releases, so all you'll have to do is download and install the new release for your custom ROM.
If you prefer to have a stock, but rooted ROM, you can download the rooted stock ROMs that usually come out after OTA updates.
Or, usually, there are leaked updates released before the official update comes out. Those are also rooted and usually posted here as well, if you want early release things.
I hope I helped you out, need anything else cleared up?

Woah. I've been searching these forums for two weeks looking for this, and thought that my only choice is to root the dang phone. Does this not alert VZW about the usage, or can they only tell how much data is being used?
I just tested this with the "wifi hotspot" app that's on the (unrooted) Incredible, and holy crap it worked! If this works out then I've just solved my only major gripe with having the Incredible on Verizon!

I agree- this works wonderfully just with the default preloaded Mobile Hotspot app.
I am wondering if there is still any reason for me to unlock the phone.

By changing the dun nai, its supposed to disable the "tell VZW I'm using this app" thing. I'm not sure about this one, but I think they can still see you're using data, just not that its from the hotspot app. Just know, if they can somehow track/tell you're using it and you get caught, I'm not to be held liable lol. Blame the guy who made the post I showed you lol. Just a little disclaimer, just in case.

Sure. What I mean is- I originally wanted to root it only to enable the functionality of the Wifi Hotspot. What functionality can I add by rooting my phone in addition to this?
I don't really see the advantage of having to update my ROM manually any time there is an Android OS update- what's the value?

SetCPU was a big selling point in my eyes back when I first rooted. You can underclock the processor while the screen is off to help save battery. But, that kind of stuff is built into some kernels now (Kings BFS6, for example). But, if you want your phone to run a bit faster and smoother, you can overclock. I also like running different ROMs with themes and stuff. The customization is pretty neat imo. Like on this ROM: I have a few (6) quick settings I can change in the notifications bar. Just little conveniences like that win me over lol. And, there are leaked versions of official releases incorporated in to ROMs earlier than they're rolled out. I was running Froyo back in late July lol. Applying different ROMs/updates to the ROMs isn't hard or inconvenient at all... Only when your battery is low does it suck lol. If you wanna remove bloatware, no problem. And, if you ever mess up somewhere, you can usually apply a Nandroid backup you previously made and be good to go.

head spinning thinking about updates

please bare with me, new here, new to android, and new to rooting. my phone is rooted with easyroot, on ek02 with the hotspot hack. my only reason for this was the hotspot hack for my 10.1 tab.
when installing roms, and things like that does that clear my stuff from my phone?? have no plans in starting over. is the factory reset the only way to clear data??
my guess is i want to keep an eye out for a el29 with the hotspot in it??
i have read till my head spins trying to catch up.i haven't hacked a phone since my razor and k1 moons ago.
thanks so much for the time,
Joel

Download Titanium Backup... It will enable you to backup all of your apps and then restore upon flashing a new rom. As far as media and pictures. Just throw them on an sd card, or backup to a comp.

[Q] R800X Failing At Step 3 of OTA

I did everything right (at least I'm pretty sure). I quadruple checked to ensure that there were no traces of root on my phone (Last time I was rooted the Software Update wouldn't even open, so I know I'm not rooted). I made sure that all system apps were restored prior to unroot. I kept it connected to a constant power source. Everytime I try to update (I think I'm at attempt #6 ) it fails at the 3rd step. Superuser is nowhere to be found on my Play. Does anyone have any ideas? The last thing I want to do is a full system restore, because wouldn't that require me activating it again?

I wouldnt worry about OTA, just restore the nandroid that netiznt posted. I have 2.3.4. on my phone now with DoomKernel and root. Just did a nandroid restore in recovery. Works great
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630348
Would that wipe stuff like my texts and whatnot? I'm new to all of this so I don't know too much yet. Would the nandroid basically be the upgrade without the hassle of Verizon's OTA service, or would my version still say 2.3.3 if I go to About Phone? I just don't want to lose all of that data and stuff.

Just to show you, I just checked for an OTA update and it said I was current. I would highly recommend you do a nandroid backup of what you hae now, then once thats done restore the new 2.3.4 nandroid. It will be like a fresh wipe on your phone.
Would I be able to restore messages from the nandroid backup of my phone? If the OTA fails, I'll definitely do this then. Did you notice any improvements from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4?
Sorry about the double post but I just checked everything in my root folder, and when I got to the system apks, I noticed that the dates on them were 30 May 2012... Could the fact that those dates didn't even happen yet be interfering with the OTA? Maybe it does some sort of date check, and future dates returned some kind of error message. What do you guys think?
I had the same problem, no matter what you do its not gonna work. However if you follow my instructions here you can get it to work, and then reload your user data in. Don't use the 2.3.4 nandroid backup they are talking about, WiFi and camera don't work, and its for unlocked bootloaders.

no it activates automatically, hit the speaker button, listen to the message, press 1 when it tells you, and you're done.
Oh alright that sounds better. The person in charge of the plan (my mom since I'm only 17) wouldn't be notified of any of this would they?

Nope, there no notification, its like if your phone broke and you got a new one, or if you did a perfectly reasonable factory reset, the ESN is already associated with your account, so you're fine.
Alright awesome thanks! If this last update attempt doesn't work I guess I have no choice but to do this.

My way works perfectly, just takes a while, close to 2 hours...
Well before I spend 2 hours on a weekday in the middle of the day, what benefits are there in this update? I'll wait till Friday night if there's not much there.

It has a new piece of Verizon bloatware to delete (Verizon Video).
Facebook Sync seems to be fixed, but its actually still broken
Most importantly though, if and when the PSN store is released it will only work with 2.3.4 or better. Some people have anticipated its release this week.
As for spending 2 hours, you aren't really doing much during that 2 hours, you can probably watch TV and not get screwed up lol.
You had me at PSN Store! Hopefully it happens this week because converting all my ISOs with PSXperia is a lot of work haha. I guess I can take a break from texting for 2 hours and play with my iPad if this OTA attempt doesn't work... all of my SMS and MMS will be restored at the end of your method right?

[Q] Nitro HD think I broke my data

Ok so first off, been using XDA for a while now to root various things, you guys have always got me what I need to get things figured out on my own, I have never before this day had to request help and for that, you guys are legendary.
Now I am semi newbi here, I know whats what for the most part but I have a hard time holding information in my short term memory so I am sorry if I miss little things
On to the problem!
So I got an AT&T LG Nitro HD P930, on ebay, I then spent the better part of a day rooting it, took me a lot of work but I eventually got it rooted and all that jazz, everything was going great... but everything changed when the fire nation... wait no... when I put CM9 on it, that crashed quite often, so I put on CM11 to check that out, no Data, so I rolled back one to CM10.2, and still no Data.
Could I have missed something?
Edit:
I thought at one point the ImeI might have gotten pushed out, but I double checked that and it is there, I have noticed at times I look at the service and it says I have 4 bars and an E next to it like back in the 2G days, but rarely and I have not had it stay long enough to test the data but if I get the chance I will edit and leave what happened here.
Also to note, I do still get random crashes but I can live with that.
P.S.S. XDA Devs are the shiznit, thank you guys for many years of amazing rom's and HP Touchpad support, my tablet is nothing without you guys!
Potential fix
Ok so admitadly I may have jumped the gun on not finding anything via the search function, I did find something digging around that might help me out. just incase anyone else checks this thread due to the same issue I will post back here if it worked, I found the fix on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2521525
Posted by Kaos420 about half way down.
Now to test it!
Issues "Unbricking"
So my second go around seems to be having trouble taking off, I cant seem to get the V10F to flash to my device following http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488 exactly as it is. always just reboots into my old OS. Any advice?
Edit: Noticed I forgot to rename V10F correctly and tried again, seems to be running smoother, feel like a total noob...

I had read something about that and had a backup of my APN but it turns out you cant flash APN data after 4.0+ or some such nonsense.
In the end I managed to get the root to take hold after restoring it from unbrick up, now I have CM9 on it and it is working just shiny. so this thread can be deleted or closed or whatnot.
If anyone would like a step by step on what I did I would be glad to post it but I doubt anyone is interested.
Good thing you got it working. And CM9 was so nice and stable for the Nitro. I often think of reverting back to it just for its reliability.

Its been a while since I did it but I will see if I cant gather all the resources I used, but in the end what I had to do was re-brick it, reverted back to stock everything to recover and re-rooted it all again, then I just skipped CM11 and went back to CM10. Now I am in a whole new **** storm haha but thats a story for another time.

[Q] Where is wifi(login) data stored?

Hello all.
Okay some quick back story...
Few months ago I changed out my charging port, related or not, my data signal is absolute trash now and I mostly rely on wifi for internet use. Having told this to a former co-worker, she gave me her brighthouse log-in info, so now when i'm at work or around town my phone will connect to brighthouse wifi hotspots. This feature is something I currently cannot go without. Now, I don't have her log-in info written down anywhere, she just typed it in, and now i'm good to go wherever I am.
Having said that, I am tired of the rom i'm currently running and would love to swap it out, however once I do this i'm afraid I will lose wifi access. Is there any info on my device I can backup and restore in a new rom that would allow me to keep using my former co-workers login information?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
