Hi! I just purchased a Galaxy Nexus from eBay and was wondering if I needed a Screen Protector. Does the screen get scratched easily or is it resistant to scratches (like SGS II) ?
Also anyone has dropped this phone and broke it ? (Dont know if I need a case)
depends on how risk averse you are.
Yes, there have been some cases (on here if you search about) where people have managed to scratch the screen.
I'd recommend getting a screen protector just to be on the safe side.
Thanks Just curious does the phone come with a screen prtector with it or should I purchase one ?
You must purchase one separately.
Check out the Accessories sub forum if you need help deciding which is best for you.
I use XO Skins and I couldn't be happier with it!!
I've had a screen protector on my nexus since I first got it from expansys in the mail. Somehow I have managed to hairline scratch the screen anyway there is only one small scratch I think it might have been in the application of my Zagg screen protector there was a tiny bit of something in between the screen protector and the screen and it caused the scratch, you can only see it if there is no protector on the screen and you hold it up to the light just right. In any case I would recommend a screen protector of some kind, it's frustrating to have your screen scratched up. I've had iphones and android devices with gorilla glass and I have had these minor surface scratches on all of them, get a screen protector it's worth it.
Thanks I have decided to get a screen protector...still not sure about the case.
Regarding a custom rom, any recommendations to which ones are the best ? (Didnt want to create another thread just for this)
Thanks

I am currently using AOKP13, make sure you install the correct one for your device (I suppose you have a GSM device since you are in Malta):
AOKP13 for GSM: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/11455-rom-android-open-kang-project-maguro-build-13/
AOKP13 for CDMA: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/12451-rom-android-open-kang-project-toro-build-13/
and this kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1367341
And I am very very pleased with the performance and battery life.
However there are many ROMs and kernels to choose from, all with different opinions so you may need to try out a few before settling down
I have the Case Mate barely there case and I love it. I have trued many of the Roms and I absolutely love IML74K 4.0.3 Build 6. Its the closest to stock and is insanely fast. I install 3m rock guard (durashield) at work on cars. I use a Roland 64" vinyl cutter and I was wondering if anyone had access to a database for phones so I don't have to cut free hand. Please let me know and if someone can supply me with designs then I will be more than happy to give you some 3m cutouts for you phone(s). Cheers!

stay away from xo skins...junk! I installed one the way the directions said, screen had all kinds of little tiny bubble in spots that would not come out with the squegee. Not to mention it scuffs really easy. Worst 13.00 I ever spent!
I just ordered the screen protector too late it appears. Despite babying this phone like no othr i have acquired a very slight small hairline scratch. Somerhing i managed to never do for 2 years on my Droid Eris. The screen is very sensitive to scratches despite what some would show you online with a set of keys.
Founf these of Play.com .... anyone tried them ?

I dont want any rubbery feeling on the screen or orange peel effect so I am not really sure which one to choose :/

whichever you prefer...
half the people out there prefer screen protectors, the other half think it ruins the experience.
personally, I prefer screen protector, but to each his own.
I've never used any form of protection on my phones and never had an issue.
The last phone i didnt use a screen protector got aids.

Wish it was gonna have Gorilla Galss like my Dinc. Then I would not even think twice. I may just put it in an otter box and be done with.

Don't even start with the whole gorilla glass thing
Personally I leave it naked, modern screens are hard to scratch.
Plus the Nexus is curved which means the screen is raised slightly when put face down.
Depends on on your pockets. If you carry anything else besides your phone in them, I suggest a screen protector or a case. If you have a dedicated pocket, you can go bare. This phone is hard to scratch, but scratches do happen. My HTC Sensation with "Gorilla Glass" is scratched up already...
Im going flip case, heres my reasons.
1: If i drop it the case should absorb the fall and not ismash as the screens fully covered.
2: You feel like james bond flipping a case open...
3: Its £5 from ebay and holds money and your bank card.
4: Im useless at putting screen protectors on
Then again it may feel too bulky with one so i may just go naked or pouch when a cool one with the android guy comes out.. as long as it doesnt i-shatter at a cm drop like my iphone lol

Im very hard on my phones. The day I got my Dinc I got a speck case and vzw anti glare sp for it. Was not a fan of how the sp took away from the way the screen should look. I cant tell you how may times I have dropped my phone screen down and not a scratch to this day on the screen now the corners are all jacked up and the case looks like hell (and is black and pink now from fading). So yes im sold on "Gorilla Glass"...
Well I'm a guy (coming from my N1, which is still my daily driver) who has always used a belt clip horizontal leather case...however I'm not too sure that such a case would be feasible with a beast of a device such as the GN. I know there was a dude on here who managed to score an OEM case of some sort for the GN from a Verizon store that is a belt-clip style, but we'll have to see how that really is. Would have to be more a vertical holder than horizontal, given the dimensions.
Anyways regardless of the accessory, I'm still planning to rock my N1 full time for the next 1-2 months until a solid selection of GN accessories have hit the market. Only then will my precious GN be allowed out of the house!
(plus that should also give plenty of time for CM9 to be blessed upon the world of android faithful!)

Had a SGS Vibrant running naked for almost an entire year and to this day, there isn't a single scratch on it. NOT ONE! Tried playing that game with my Nexus and sure enough, there are already 2 clear scratches... that's after owning the phone for a mere 48 hours.
To anyone questioning what to do, take my stupid advice and put a screen protector on this phone.
sand is your only concern. those who have gone naked on other devices and don't have a scratch have not come into contact with this. maybe one day they will, maybe they never will. i personally won't take that chance.
Anybody had any issues using the GN without a screen protector?
I've seen one or 2 threads mentioning scratches on the screen but nothing from people using it normally without one on.
And i do remember that early video of somebody going mad with a key on one
So what do you guys reckon?

I didnt use one as i hate screen protectors ..... but then i noticed scratches so now i do
The glass doesnt seem that tough sadly. I was very careful.
I have no idea how easy it is to scratch glass
I'm coming from a Nokia N900...which had a resistive screen, so the front was plastic! In 2 years use i only got 1 major/noticeable scratch on it that happened early on due to my own stupidity, was always kept in a leather case...
But N900 mainly used the hardware keyboard for text input...but always used nails for pushing on small things in the browser...
so i'd think glass would be more scratch resistant than palstic but like i said, i have no reference for glass use!
Personally I hate screen protectors but I noticed a really faint scratch on the screen after a week of owing the phone and put on a Zagg screen protector. Can't same I'm very happy with how the screen now feels but you get use to it and I don't want to risk ruining the awesome screen.

Nobody "likes" screen protectors.
They're like condoms, you don't put it on because you like it, it's a weighing of risk vs reward

There was one I had for an ipod, long time ago. It was a thin plastic sticker type ..not that crappy squishy type. How I wish I could find those again. If you cleaned the screen properly and put it on right you couldn't tell there was a protector
As for now I run naked. This screen is silky smooth and I don't want to lose that

Yeah I am really scared about getting a scratch but this screen is SOO responsive, and it doesnt get finger prints very easily so im going no protector, still scares me though -___-
hi
i just bought a Gnex
and i was wondering do i really need a screen protector?
is it recommended??
im asking cause i had a vibrant and a GS2 before. and i did not need it cause of the gorilla display. but my friend keeps telling me the gnex does not have one, and the screen will shatter with the most minimal drop. so since i never had one, do i need like an otterbox or something?
I really dont like covers or cases on my phones. so im asking cause if its so fragile as everyone says i really need to get one

You will probably scratch your screen if you don't use one. Screen protector will not keep it from breaking if you drop it.
Yeah it does not have gorilla glass and it seems to want to scratch easier so I went and got one too. I didn't use them but I want the screen in good shape

I use the XO Screen Protector. It is a wet application, where it has to dry. It covers it edge to edge and it isn't even noticeable. There is a slight difference in feel compared to the naked screen... so if you were smart, you'd apply it before you got used to the screen so you couldn't tell a difference.
I also use the Rinkge Slim Metallic case, which is a super slim profile case that is the exact same color as the phone itself. It doesn't feel like it has a case on.
Both of these products really help protect the phone while making it hardly noticeable.
I second the above, case and protector. Use both and enjoy both. Both have excellent customer service also.

I have to also agree with both post above.
XO Skin + Ringke Slim Case = :]
Hey everyone, I couldn't figure out whether this should be in QnA or Accessories, but I figured it should be here.
Anyway, is there any known brands that do screen protectors, but at a reasonable price.
I know about ZiggZagg etc, but spending £15 on a screen protector to me is ludacrus, they come off/start peeling after not so long, so I couldn't imagine paying that for 1!.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated !!!
Umm... the One X has gorilla glass? You don't need a screen cover. That's like trying to wear a sock over your shoe to protect it from the ground....

1 - Its nothing like trying to wear a sock over a shoe thats a stupid analogy
2 - I would of liked a suggestion thanks.
Actually i just ordered the dynaflo hard shield, but i've search for other screen protectors in case it won't be as good as i thought.
I came across skinomi screen protector wich look pretty great and covers almost the entire screen...it cost around 12$ (i dunno what's your budget but i think its pretty cheap..) here's a video about it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otwcex1_uJg
hope it helps...

I have learnt the hard way that gorilla glass can not be trusted any more...
That's a shame as it was perfect on my Desire Z...
Hox screen is filled with micro starches out of nowhere....

Hense I want a screen protector.
CAN ANYONE RECOMMEND ONE ?!?!?!
I would stay clear of SGP ultra oleophobic...
Its nearly impossible to install correctly, picks up dirt quite easily and the rainbow effect is all over the place...
The only things i like it that it doesn't go round the edges so it wont peel off and the feel of the protector is almost identical to the HOX glass...
For the price i paid not very satisfied since i ruined the 1st one upon installation!
Best Skins Ever .
www.bestskinsever.com
You can either get full body or screen only protection.
Cheapest price, BEST quality, the touch and feel is amazing.
I bought these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/6x-Clear-LC...901133?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item4abb2d7fcd
unless u spend good money i find that most screen protectors are about the same. when i get them ill see how they stand up
I feel exactly the same as you. I've been looking for a decent screen protector since I got my One X. Unfortunately I can't advise you on any good ones as I haven't found one yet, but I can tell you don't bother with the official HTC one. I paid something like £8 (if I remember rightly) thinking it's the official one so it should be good but it didn't even fit the phone due to the curved edges. The edges were raise all around it which looked awful.
I'd be interested if anyone does recommend a decent one for a reasonable price.
And for the record, gorilla glass does scratch. It's not things like sharp objects that are the problem but minute grains of dust and sand rubbing against it. It scratches very easily under certain circumstances, such as in a gritty pocket or a pocket with sand in it.
well ijust recieved the ones from ebay... its clear but the protector doesnt cover the edges and ends like .2 in from the bottom
Well, the best that I have use so far is Skinomi. Have gone through all others and end up going back to Skinomi as it is the only which cover from edge to edge. The one who don't tend to collect dust on the side and it just annoying

Capdase makes pretty good screen protectors. Only thing you should be protecting your phone against is sand.
Thanks for all suggestions !
By the looks of it Skinomi looks best for me.
How is the install process, easy?
Does it catch dust or is it a clean install if that makes sense?
Thanks !!
Install process is not as difficult as dsbg, just make sure that your hand is wet

Bestskinsever are the best skins ever, super cheap, great support, i can recomend them enough
Hi,
i use bestskinever and i am very happy with it. The skin goes frome edge to edge and is very easy to install. I also compared it with de XO Skin which is much more expensive and coud not see andy diference.
Decided to stick with my 6 for £2 protectors
I Bought Gorillagard from Amazon for £5.99. It does not cover the whole screen but slightly wider than the ones just cover the center off the screen. The good thing about this screen protector is that if it gets dirty all you have to do is peel it off, wash it with water and stick it back on. It uses static to stick to the screen. The edges are a problem though but i ain't too fussed about it.
I always use a screen protector on my devices. I ordered one off amazon the same time I ordered my Nexus, but now it seems that the screen protector is not going to arrive at the same time. Will I be ok without a screen protector for a few days? I know it's gorilla glass and likely won't get a big noticeable scratch if I'm careful. What I'm worried about are the fine scratches that you can only see in direct light. Will my fingertips cause these scratches on Gorilla Glass 3?
P.S If anyone on here lives in New Mexico and happens to know a store that is selling screen protectors for the new Nexus 7 that would be great. None of the stores I have visited have any in stock.

Hey,
I used my N7 for a few days before my screen protector arrived. I can tell you that your screen will be fine. Assuming that you'll be careful with it.
-cliew
I've used mine for 10 days now completely naked. Not a single scratch on the screen. I've had it riding in my cars and in my pocket a few times now and I may not get a screen protector after all. So I think you'll be OK. Hope this helps =)
I have used my tablets naked since my first which was a rooted & ROM'd 1st gen NookColor. I have not scratched a single screen on any of them. I tried 'protectors' twice and in both cases tossed in garbage in under a week because they lowered sensitivity. But I also never leave my tablets laying around, if not in current I put them in their case or when in folios I close the folio.
When someone make a screen protector that will actually protect the screen from things like falls or a brick being dropped onto the screen I will give them another try.
I've had a naked LG Optimus G since it came out last year and not a scuff on it... I would say that the modern "glass" that is on these things is quite capable as long as you aren't wearing a ring that will scuff it up..

My local Best Buy store had them in stock when I picked up my FLO. Not cheap, but decent.
I used to have all kinds of protection on my devices. Nowadays I rock my Nexus 4 naked, except for when theres a high risk situation - e.g. Off to the woods or sailing. For this I usually use only a back protector or bumper.
My Nexus 7 still haven't got any protection, but I'm probably getting it a sleeve for travel or something resembling a 'smart cover'.
Anyway, the glass used in the latest devices is pretty sturdy, so it's not easy to scratch..

That's why I said New Mexico though. I've called every Best Buy in town and no one has any screen protectors.
Last time I used a screen protector on a device was the G1. I've never had scratches on my phones. My Note 2 is always in my pocket with keys, change, etc. My N7 will remain naked. I want nothing to distract from this beautiful screen.
The only real danger to scratching these screens is sand.
Seems the Nexus does not have Gorilla Glass but some other kind, just one notch below the much desirable Gorilla Glass...
