I put a protector on my phone the day I bought it but it irritates me. If anyone's running it nude, how scratch resistant does it seem to be? Is a protector really needed?

I ran my MotoDroid without a screen protector but with a good case.. The phone wouldn't have lasted the two years without the case.. but the naked screen has maybe 1 or 2 minor scratches (when viewed from an angle) after two years..
So I'll by doing the same for my GNex
I put a screen protector on my SGN and it looked horrid. After a few days of putting up with it I finally removed it. The screen definitely looks better without a screen protector IMHO. Maybe I just got a cheap screen protector, don't know.
As far as scratches, one week and no scratches. Time will tell though. I may go with a screen protector again if I can find one which doesn't seriously diminish image quality.
Anyone know of a high quality screen protector which will not degrade the image quality?
I've had my Nexus for nearly two months now. From the beginning I've been using it completely nude, both screen and the body. It has two tiny little scratches on the screen that are seen only in strong, direct lightning conditions only when the screen is off or pitch black. They are not disturbing at all when I use the phone. BTW, my misses, who's got Desire S reinforced by Gorilla Glass has some tiny scratches on the screen as well, so I don't see the point to BS about this Gorilla Glass wonder .
What's more interesting, I dropped my GNex from about 1m screen down on the ground and it survived. There are a few spots (rather then scratches) in the bottom left corner of the phone, I can see them when looking directly.
Finally, I'm gonna write some more about scratches etc on the GNex in the future because I'm gonna go nude for at least 2 years (I've got Three Insurance on it so don't bother)

I had a screen protector on my OG Droid for all of a week. Since then no one in my family has used a screen protector on any Android phone we have had:
2 OG Droid
3 Eris
2 Droid X
1 Droid Incredible
1 Thunderbolt
2 Galaxy Nexus
Not one ever had scratches on the screen. Some did have the screen break but a screen protector would have not stopped that. When I see threads where people have big scratchs on there screens I can't imagine how it happens as I keep my phone in my jeans pocket. Who knows how my 15 year old daughter keeps hers, my wife just throws hers (my old thunderbolt) in her purse (drives me nuts).
I just don't like the feel of a screen protector.

i stopped using screen protectors long ago. hate the damn things.. especially when i got that crap 'invisi-shield' on my Thunderbolt(hated the feel) and ended up having to get it replaced twice.
these days i just use a basic silicone case & no protectors at all. i just make sure that whatever pocket i put my phone in not to put anything else in with it(especially keys).
Had the Galaxy Nexus about two weeks now, and I use all my devices without any case and without any screen protector.
Not a single scratch as of yet. Now it is worth noting the reason I am willing to carry my devices without any protection is because I am a fanatic.
My phone never rests face down unless on a soft cloth, my phone remains in my pocket and it is NEVER in the pocket with anything else, even headphones. I also rarely drop my phones but I just find them so much more comfortable and easy to use without the extra bulk.
I really hate the feel of screen protectors on high end phones.
UPDATE: Edit, I do not however, let my wife carry hers without a screen protector because she just chucks it in her purse and I nearly die inside everytime I see it.
been without a SP for a while but finally getting one soon. ordered this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1414052
ordered that specifically because many people here and on reviews said that it's almost identical to the stock screen and doesn't hurt the quality at all.
i hated the screen protectors. never had any screen protectors on any of my nexus's (N1, NS, GN)
but you will need to handle it with care.
i use a pouch with it, so, when in pocket, its sort of protected. but when you do not handle with care eg while playing with it then dropped it, then i am not sure what will happen.
Screen protectors look awful. I will never put one on any of my phones.
I've had the phone since the 23rd. i largely hate screen protectors, tried one on my moto xoom and i find they tend to get dull and crappy looking very quickly.
I'm a huge fan of keeping my phones in a slip case (something like the nexus ones neoprene case) While i search for a good slip case for the nexus i've been using a sun glasses bag when it's in my pocket. So far zero scratches and tons of use.
Nevaer had screen protectors in any of my phones...

Always... that is what I use insurance for. The cost of a case and accessories is almost over half my deductible if I really messed up the phone.
No screen protector. I'd have to replace it weekly, I hate the dull, dirty and scratched look. I've yet to find a company who's screen protectors don't do that.
I've had mine since the 8th, and it goes in my pocket with the headphones. Inside jacket pocket or jeans pocket depending on what I'm doing. No scratches or other markings on the screen so far.
My SGS prior had 1 scratch from a year and a half of use and that was due to my wife putting her hand (with rings on) into my coat pocket to grab my phone. I heard the diamond scratch the glass. Serious shudder moment.
O.
thanks for the feedback guys.

Past performance doesn't necessarily predict future outcomes.
If a minor scratch doesn't bother you, don't use a screen protector. But if you plan to sell the phone later and want the most money, obviously you should use one - you'll get used to it after a few days and not care.

True but it does help set a precedent, that the OP can use to determine if they feel comfortable enough to follow through with a naked phone or not.

While a screen protector will prevent scratches, I would edit your line above and say. "Putting a screen protector on doesn't necessarily predict future selling price." But it can't hurt.
Now to the meat of this. NO! Not everyone gets used to having a screen protector on their phone. I've tried 6-7 different screen protectors over the last two years trying to find one that replicates the feel of the glass. So far...no go. I find screen protectors to be grippy, and I hate that feel. Even ones that say they are smooth still feel grippy, and then there is the issue of having to install them. You practically need a clean room. Then the dirt and dust collects around the edges of the screen protectors and makes them stand out. I could go on, but ya not everyone gets used to them.
OCD...maybe a little. But for me, so far at least; screen protectors are a no go.
Now don't get me started on cases.
O.
I carry my GNEX in my jeans but never put keys, money etc in the same pocket. No scratches so far
No screen protector here, and no scratches yet. Never had any scratches on my Hero for 2 1/2 years so won't be using one this time either.
Used to swear by screen protectors. Couldn't use a phone without one.
Not used a screen protector since my Touch Pro 2 and never had a scratch on any of my phones since. I just stopped filling my 'phone pocket' with diamonds and the other sharp stuff I used to carry around.
Regards.
This thing has Gorilla Glass 3.
From what I have heard it's very hard to scratch. It's more likely you will break it then scratch it...
Anyone have any experience with this?
I'm still putting one on to avoid pocket scratches. My phones always wear protection.

have my N4 with no screen protector since launch, haven't seen any issues. Plan to do the same with N5. Of course, don't put your phone in the pocket with the keys/coins.
Well I got one spigen screen protector for my Nexus 5 from Amazon and really it makes me feel pretty much carefree about my N5....I know the screen is pretty good but still I cant take any risk over it...
i also had no problem with my nexus 4 without a screen protector so i will not put one on my N5... gorilla glas 3 should do the job good enough as it is better than glas 2 on the n4
couple grains of sand in your pocket or whatever and you're screwed. A bad screen protector can ruin the experience of the phone, but spigen ultra crystal has always been good looking to me. My thoughts are why take the chance, if you're not ruining your experience or whatever. I also like to keep my phones as close to mint for resale.

It depends on on several things. Mainly how you plan on using the phone. All it takes is one moment to throw your phone in your pocket with a set of keys and you "can" scratch it. Although very very hard to see, I did this day two with my iPhone 5S. The scratch was negligible, but still there. In a year of owning an iPhone 5 without a screen protector though. It was scratch free, same with 4S previously.
That said, back protector or case definitely. I can't do screen protectors though.
And me...my N4's only protection is the Google bumper...not a scratch on back or front.
My N7 has a Poetic Slimline Portfolio case and that has one big scratch at the top of the screen

Yeah my perspective is with both my SGN and N4 I used screen protectors (cheap ebay ones) and with my N4 I was very unsatisfied with the screen and when I took it off it was like I had a new phone again.
I've been so happy with no protector and I'm very good at keeping a dedicated pocket.
That said, maybe I'll try one of these spigen protectors, if it's as good as you say it might be worth the piece of mind.
After years of running eBay or Monoprice screen protectors, I tried the SPG Steinheil. AMAZING. Too bad they don't have the Nexus 5 one on Amazon yet. Until then, I'll be naked.

It's not the keys that scratch it, it's the pocket sand. Metal can't scratch glass, sand can.
Although not likely to happen again, after being thrown across a bar room when a cab crashed through the window next to where I was sitting, you should have seen what the screen on the gnex in my pocket looked like. I peeled off the protector and it was good as new. Too bad I didn't have one for my back.

Thanks for beating me to it. Every time a new phone or a new Gorilla Glass is released the same question pops up.
Guess I'm better off playing it safe.
I am thinking of getting a screen protector for my moto g. I know it has gorilla glass 3, but i hate scratches on the screen so much I am still considering giving it a bit more protection. Had a look on amazon, not a lot of choices. In fact this seems to be the only good one. It has no reviews, so thought i'd share it here and get some opinions.
PS: Am i being too weird? Is the screen already safe enough? let me know

It will be my first smart phone, so I got the flip case/cover for the all around protection, but yeah, if you just want it for the screen, I guess it's an OK choice. Though I've read some people don't like the feel of those protectors.
My Dad has a Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman and it just has a "Scratch-resistant glass" and it has no protection at all it has been 2 years but there is not even a single scratch on it and I know how rough he uses the phone so there is no need for extra protection
Watch the scratch test video! They used even a knife but the screen was like new

I am just a bit of a freak when it comes to scratch on glass
I went to the beach with my Samsung S4 and it got scratched, but luckily I did have a screen protector on. So yes gorrila glass protects against knifes but it won't protect it from sand
@theArchitektas
Where did you get flip case from? Pretty sure they are not selling them yet
I have the atFolix ones on order from Amazon; were dispatched last week but still waiting. I'm the same, I always put screen protectors on my phones; the only exception is my Lumia 920 as it has a curved screen and I couldn't find a decent one to apply (even the official one was no good)!

If anyone can find a glass screen protector for the Moto G please let us know. So far I haven't found a glass one anywhere. I can't stand the plastic ones, but the glass ones (like the ones made by SPIGEN) fell just like the original screen.

I can strongly confirm. When I had mine I scoured the interwebs looking for a protector and couldn't find a good one. But I had min for about 1.5 yrs and had NO SIGNIFICANT SCRATCH. There would probably be small lines near the SE logo... but you would have to peep closely to notice.
I think I might order mine without the SP and decide to get one later.

I could, though the Moto X itself isn't sold in the UK. I wanted an immediate solution so I wouldn't have to leave it unprotected but I'm happy enough with the outcome to wait until some decent screen protectors arrive on the UK market.
I brought a case which is actually quite decent and it came with an OK screen protector. I applied it like a 2 year old so ended up taking it off and throwing it. http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=161166397679

People who say only things of a certain hardness will scratch Gorilla Glass are talking rubbish. Either that or the phones I've seen in CeX - no more than two month old devices in some cases, with screens that look like they've been sandpapered - have been kept in the same pocket as someone's beach samples.
BEWARE the moto g does scratch quite easily, I know this because mine slid off the chair and the screen cracked and had scratches all over it, I now have got a replacement moto g and put a screen protector on from day one !

If you are spending $200 on something that could be damaged a good screen protector is cheap insurance.
We replaced my wife's Nexus S (bought the first month they came out) with a Moto G. She never had a screen protector. She has one bad scratch in the Nexus screen http://www.patentlystupid.com/sw/nexus.png sorry the pic is blurry but I took it in the dark with only a blue LED flashlight to highlight the scratch. Now keep in mind the Nexus S did not have Gorilla Glass. My guess is my wife's diamond ring hit the screen while she was rooting around in her purse one day. That is the only bad scratch on this 3 year old device.
A friend of mine likes to carry high end ($300+) pocket knives made by Bench Made, they constantly scratch is screens and he has resorted to using Spigen Glass screen protectors and these too get badly scratched by the metal edges of these hardened knives. He has replaced several already.
So no you are not being too weird or paranoid. I use Spigen Glas-Tr myself. I have no scratches on it yet, but I would rather replace the $30 screen protector than the screen on my $650 SGS4. Just make good sense.
I have put a cheap plastic protector on my wife's Moto G screen. I will replace it with a tempered glass one as soon as I find one I like.
screen protector ensures higher resale value, and since I sell my old phones on craigslist/ebay, I put protector on every single time. Sometimes $.99 stores sell iphone screen protector n I use it as temporary one until I wait to receive one I ordered online.
As for Moto G, I received the phone today and learned that the cover that comes with the phone CAN be used as a screen protector. Those M logo and motorola name on it? You can scratch them off with your fingernail.
Hi all, Has anyone scratched the plastic body on the 3a yet? I know there is a video from JerryRigEverything but I normally don't draw on the back of my phones with sharp tools. This is more of a real world question. Has anyone dropped their's by accident? Or has the phone slid across a rough surface? How does it look afterwards.? Thank you for reading.
Yes, I know using a case is ideal but I normally ditch the case after the phone is a few months old. I also have a tempered glass on it considering some folks say it is inferior to Gorilla Glass.

Same hardness, scores lower on bend testing. In other words you'll be ok without the protector or more accurately as ok as you would be with the gorilla.

It you read the quoted post. He always removes his cases meaning scratches. So before you quote the obvious hes probably had phones that were gorrilla glass.
I do care about the plastic back getting scratched. This is why I asked the question. I also started to care about the screen this is why I have a tempered glass protector this time around. I bought one off of Amazon for 5 bucks and it has been great (Covers the entire screen and has black boarders. I bought another one with the cutouts but didn't like it as much.).
You're right, I did not use a screen protector on my other phones with Gorilla Glass (Oneplus 5T, Nexus 6p). I haven't had a plastic phone in a long time so I'm just curious about scratches...if anyone has any.

Thanks. I got both. I'm still curious how bad the real life scratches look. Anyone not using a case or skin and has scratches, I would love to see pictures. I couldn't find any scratch test videos on youtube so this is why I'm asking.

I didnt want to use a case with this as i actually enjoy the feel of the phone and think its pretty premium! Unfortunately it did slide out of my pocket getting out of the car early on and landed on concrete. The screen has no marks and held up well however on the side there were two small chips of the plastic that annoy my ocd brain but to be honest they have smoothed out over time and made it easier for me to accept there may be other small imperfections over time.
Im generally careful with the phone but its not gained any scratches on the plastic body since bought at launch :good:
Im very impressed with it and its the first phone in a long time ive enjoyed using.
I did try a Spigen clear case but it felt horrible to me so i only use it for nights out etc when i may be less careful.
Hope this helps!
the first 3A XL I purchased from Best buy, I did not have a case on it. I own the phone for about a week before returning it and I did somehow chip off some of the black on the back of the case. When it was not in my pocket it was in my hand being used. I never dropped this device, but somehow it seemed like some of the paint just flaked off. I returned it because the warranty through Best buy was bogus and I bought the device through my carrier, Google Fi. I've used this device for almost 2 weeks with no case and no problems so far. I just put a rhino shield case on it.
My original defected Pixel, just a few weeks without a case or screen protector looked horrible.. I never dropped it on the ground, but just falling from the dash to the floor of truck, it took a beating.. First phone I had that scratched as easy as this one.. Now new phone, has a case, and screen protector.

Every Pixel I've ever seen has that paint chipping problem. I've seen it on every number. Personally bought a Pixel XL OG last summer to use for a month or 2 and the back was so chipped I genuinely thought that it had been roughed up or something. Nope just ****ty paint chipped off from being hot and the metal showing behind it. Most likey from being in case. So far hasn't happened to my 3A yet.
This is plastic not metal. Grab a dbrand or xtremeskin and put in a tpu case should be fine
had my glass screen protector crack on edge from something pressed against it, tool in my pocket with phone. the plastic body has a slight nick on the edge by the display. No crack on the actual display itself. I'm happy.

I am more impressed with the built in screen protector after one week. I've tried film screen protectors before and they showed marks from the s.Pen this one doesn't (yet). And the fingerprint works fine. I know it doesn't help much if you drop the phone but helps re scratches. I've always found that the glass screen protectors eventually attract dust on the sides. Im also using the included case for now which too is not bad.. What's your thoughts.

I thought it was excellent but mine had to marks underneath out of the box and I was worried that it was the actual display that was marked so I pulled it off and it was the actual screen protector that was marked, been a pain in the arse since getting a protector that is decent
Wish I never removed it :silly:
It would be nice if Samsung provided a service where a new screen protector can be reapplied when original one is worn out.
After a week mine is badly scratched.
Already looking at the options for a replacement, not too keen on tempered glass.

Its quite nice but mine is scratched all over and I'm not rough on the phone at all. I'll probably just leave it on, scratches and all. I am not wasting money on a Dome or some Tempered Glass solution that is cheaper that isn't going to fit or work well.
I had the S10+ Which also came with a screen protector but I honestly think Samsung did something to improve it - the one that came on my Note 10+ seems better than on the S10+ I had.
For what it's worth, I also don't want to spend the money on Glass - and don't want one where I have to put liquid on the screen to get it to work -I never had any luck with those - BUT, there are some very good plastic screen protectors that work exceptionally well, are easy to install and will make a good alternative if you need to replace the one that came with the phone.
The One I found that I like best is the Otao Screen Protector on Amazon - https://www.amazon.com/OTAO-Protector-Coverage-Friendly-Anti-Bubble/dp/B07VHBNRJP/ref=sr_1_25?keywords=screen+protector+note+10+plus&qid=1567359663&s=gateway&sr=8-25
The Video they posted on amazon definitely helps you install it perfectly and it is very affordable - just over 7 bucks and you get two of them.
Looks good - works great - lasts a long time (It did on my S10+ and I am sure it will on my Note 10+ as well.
THere are others that are also good, but this is the one I found that I like the most. Good luck....

This is the downside of in-screen sensors. I personally like matter screen protectors which don't show marks, fingerprints and look clean. I don't want to buy one for it to not be compatible with the sensor. Any info if matte screen protectors might work?
the glass ones dont work well with fingerprint sensor. I wouldn't waste your money! I bought a 360 deg case and it doesnt work on that either.
Shame sammy doesnt sell the one that came on the phone. Mine protector has a scratch on it already though I was on hols last week and it could've been sand so its saved the screen!

Same, sand and s-view cover bad idea lol. Got fair few pits in the protection.
I do like the built-in screen protector but as other people have mentioned, mine already has scratches on it nothing deep or crazy but it works fine for now. I've pre-ordered a Whitestone Dome, though expensive, I have mastered the process to the point that I don't make a mess. I've been using them since my Note8 and have had no complaints. Hell, it's even protected my screen when I've dropped it face down. The Dome cracked but my screen underneath was intact. I am a bit concerned about the Fingerprint scanner since it's not the greatest at recognizing my fingerprint but ah well.
The tempered glass screen protectors DO NOT WORK !!!!I'm on my third one. The sensor does not pick up.....I may just rock it raw dawg!!
I'm typically not a screen protector sort of person, but it was a week before i even noticed that the note 10+ had one on it.. I'm so impressed i'm leaving it on.
Yeah, I'm staying too on this one untill I buy whitestone dome as always! Hope that it works on this phone too with spigen tough armour; s8, s9+, note 9 works withouth problems!

It would be nice if Samsung provided a service where a new screen protector can be reapplied when original one is worn out.

My son sent an email to Samsung, telling them that his screen protector for his S10+ was damaged after several months of use, and they sent him a replacement!

Nice! What would be even better, I think, if they had a service where it would be applied for you too. So, the same factory fit feel.
I've been very impressed with the factory protector as well. Hardly noticeable that it is there.
If they would sell this for cheap i would buy like 10. They get scratch easily but is so clear, finger glide and doesnt leave fingerprint. They only problem would be installation since this plastic screen protectors are a paint to get a perfect installation

How did he got about this? Mine fell off my bed over night on literally the first night I had it and the screen protector did its job ?caught on the side of the bed and took a big scratch
Mine died after just over a week, loving the fingerprint reader since
