GPS only locks on with A-GPS - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Used navigation for first time today and found it frustrating. First of all I thought GPS was broken as it span "obtaining location" for 5 minutes until I turned on A-GPS and data then it finally got my location, I later turned off A-GPS and data and it kept on working fine with the already pre cached map data.
Later on had same issue, data was on this time but A-GPS was not. It refused to do anything until A-GPS was turned on. Surely this is not intended behaviour? GPS alone should be sufficient with pre cached data.

it is normal. that's why phones have agps. it helps alot. it takes much longer without the assistance.

Why are you messing around with the GPS, works just fine with the default settings. Not a single issue. Locks fast and near instant. Best GPS I've used (Verizon version) which is saying a lot since I use GPS almost everyday and on every phone I've had.
Was there something wrong with your GPS?

Well, just thought that it would work with GPS solo like normal gps devices do without requiring mast triangulation etc, probably uses less juice as well. Hopefully you can use gps and a-gps without requiring data as long as you have pre cached.

This is the best GPS I've had also, the default settings are perfectly fine

it will work solo, but if you have assisted turned off, you have to download the gps almanac via gps signal, this takes a long time, but once you have it, everything should work fine. its just to get you homed in initially.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPS_signals
takes 12 minutes to download the almanac

there is NO reason to ever turn off a-gps. makes no sense why you would do that. it uses almost no power and is pretty damn accurate, and as you know how (and know why) turning it off makes it take lot longer to find you.

A-GPS is absolute garbage.
It's accurate to within like 2000 meters on a mobile network.
For apps that just need your general locale - it's fine, but for using it for navigation/direction - you have to turn it off so it doesn't give you bogus directions because it thinks you're 5 blocks west of where you're actually at.

How do you make sure aGPS is enabled?

No reason to turn it off though. It can only help to get your location narrowed down.

No its not....and it is one of the issues that most phones with weak GPS suffer from....the wireless triangulation is garbage. If your device only supports AGPS (older crap phones) then maybe.....I NEVER use wireless assistance on my phone locks in two seconds and tracking is as good as Garmin. Only payoff you may get from AGPS is it tight areas with limited sight of birds....like 1st floor apt. In NYC.

This is correct. Agps helps narrow down where you might be much quicker and hands that off to gps so you get more accuracy. We should be. Grateful that gps is competent in this phone, especially because it is samsung. If yours is consistently wack. Then. You probably have. Defect unit.

aGPS
Wow, there seems to be an awful lot of confusion about what aGPS actually is.
First, aGPS will NOT affect your accuracy in any way.
Here is how things work in a non-aGPS way. In order for GPS to work the receiver has to know where all the satellites will be at any point in time. This is achieved using a series of starting points and equations that describe each satellite's orbit. The orbits vary enough over time that this data, called the "Almanac" is only accurate for a short period of time. The almanac is constantly being updated on the satellites and they, in turn, are constantly broadcasting the almanac back down to the gps receivers. This automatic broadcast is done at a very low bit rate, so it takes about 12 minutes for a satellite to send the almanac data. The receiver has to wait for a new almanac broadcast to start before it can begin saving locally (it can't start saving in the middle), it takes a while for a new session to start over. Your gps must wait until it has at least 3 satellites locked, and a current version of the almanac before it can give your location.
All that aGPS does is download the almanac over the data connection. It allows you to get the almanac data faster, but in no way does it actually affect the accuracy or function of the GPS. The data connection plays absolutly no part in determining your location.

Sorry to inform you, but I didn't look at Wikipedia at all when I wrote that. Many years ago I worked for a company called "Spirent Communications" that created GPS testing equipment. That job required some pretty low level technical knowledge of how GPS works.

does aeroplane mode switch gps off if it does then probably lol
I think it is illegal, your phone is not allowed to sent or receive any signal during flight.
It is not illegal. Many pilots use GPS.
You are not allowed to use any radio TRANSMITTER while in flight. GPS is only a receiver, so no issues there. A radio receiver cannot in any reasonable way affect aircraft avionics. Most airlines insist you switch off ALL electronics devices when taking off or landing. During cruise, GPS is fine.
The issues you will find however is that civilian GPS maxes out at about 500kph, whereas a cruising airliner goes much faster than that.
Ive tested my desire, and GPS works in airplane mode.
Thanks all. I will try out my GPS on the plane

Do you think you will get a gps fix?
THe plane will be moving very fast... and as I know if it's moving to fast the cpu wont decode your position in time....
Well try it out and see. But I'm not sure if your phone is designed so that the gps would work at that altitude and velocity.

Which programme do you want to use to keep track of where you are? because you can't use google maps, since you don't have a data connection. And most navigation programmes only work with roads. Plus (don't know how your flight goes) but most don't have maps of oceans.
I tried my (desire)gps on the plane to Greece, reported about 900km/h and alt 11000m. Not that easy getting a fix though.

mine showed over 950kph without issue. the limits according to the web are 60,000ft (18km) altitude and 515metres per second (1000knots) speed. anything outside these ranges and it stops displaying location data. so it will work fine on any civilian flight. by the way, the restriction is to stop gps guidance data being used on a missile if anyone was wondering.

I used GPS on former phone (HTC Touch Pro) during flights. The fix is not a problem and everything worked fine. I used IGO8 to track speed and position and it was funny when it warned me that I exceeded the speed limit in towns (doing 780km/h instead of 50km/h ).
No one actually bothered me when I used it.
There's no reason why it should be illegal but airlines and flying in general has become very edgy. So it is usually specifically forbidden and as such you "could" get in real problems if you disregard that rule, I'm not saying you will but you gotta be careful. I've used gps in a plane too, you only get a fix right near a window but it works really well, it was spot on with speed, altitude and location there's no speed maximum that I know of on gps.
So be careful and when confronted immediately comply with the steward(ess) they don't know all devices and don't care for arguments.

I have used GPS on the planes in Europe for last 5 years, it makes the journey feel shorter as you can see the progress and also spot cities/mountain ranges in distance.
I found that in some aircrafts notably A320 it is nearly impossibled to get a fix while B737 are generally OK. I would put this down to shielding of the cabin rather than some disruptive technlogy used to protect the flight safety.
Same thing actually applies to trains, Google maps works really well there but there is absolutely a zero fix in some more recent ones.

Why is GPS so important

Ok so I see/read about all these leaks and blah blah and on every forum I go to people complain about gps I don't see the big deal I hardly use gps it doesn't seem to bother me what do u guys use gps so much for that when looking at a rom or phone gps has to be a priority just curious I guess yes I kno about traveling is that it or am I missing something

Some people complain about meer feet I understand the traveling idea cause yea I use it to go to the other sides of town where I live but to choose whether or not ur gonna get a certain rom, phone, manufacture cause of gps problems I think its crazy..if that's the only reason some people are just picky I thought maybe gps dealt with somethin else that's why people cared about it so much?

Before I got my tab I used GPS quite often. It was a feature I bought the phone for and I wanted it to work. Surprisingly my Gtab has a great GPS.
My wife the real estate agent seems to think it's pretty important too.
I stopped bringing my gps places. I pay for the service, it should work.

The average person needs GPS for a lot of reasons. Some people actually use it rather than pretend they know where they are going, only to get lost, drive like an over cautious idiot causing accidents because they really dont know where they are going. I got my dad an Epic for the GPS because he's one of those people.
Gps is very useful for many reasons. Of course the obvious is getting around town.
But it also integrates with many apps that use your location. Such as yelp, or movie app, or facebook etc...
True, you could always manually enter your location, but one of the main selling points for me on a smartphone is to reduce the amount of things I need to do in my daily life.
Getting back to "getting around town". Instead of looking up directions and printing them out, and still possibly not know exactly where to go... I can hop in my car, pull up my calendar and literally touch phone twice to start navigating me to my destination.
Of course this won't apply to everyone, but I know it certainly helps me in my daily life.
Also just fyi, people aren't just containing about a few feet. A lot of roms have completely broken gps or gps that displays wrong location.

And I'll put it this way. Lets say you have a car with 4 doors and u dont have many people ride in the back. Don't you still want your 2 rear windows to work?
Sent from the Drivers Seat of my Suby txting and Driving doing 100MPH+ in a school zone! Ha.
In many cases the GPS just locks up while driving somewhere. So it requires a reboot to get it going again...not cool at 70 MPH on the highway. The GPS on our phone takes the place of a Garmin or TOM TOM and is a very important feature for most of us when choosing a phone. For people that don't go anywhere unknown to them it is no big deal. I do AC work and go to 5-8 new places a day. Don't want to sit with a map trying to figure out where I am going.
Because when one lives in a major city, gps with real-time traffic reports is invaluable to have while trying to commute to and from work for example. Not a priority when you live in a small town and know all the roads and such.
Don't want to be like that one kid on the Verizon commercial who has a utility belt with 5-7 devices attached to it.
All-in-one is ideal.

Google maps have some of the worst routing IQs around and that is why it is free. You get what you pay for. TOMTOM has the best routing IQs and so is Garmen both of these program are not available for Android yet. But I heard TOMTOM is coming soon.

Thsi is the main reason I use my GPS.
Traffic around here can be a massive issue, and knowing where to avoid, can change what could have been an all day parking experience, into a 20min trip, simply by not getting stuck behind an accident that has the highway closed, with no way to exit

You hit the nail on the head!
Well, most location services work just fine without knowing EXACTLY where you are.
Other than the obvious that we don't need a reason, it should work, it can work, so when a rom comes out where it doesn't, we should fix that. The thing I use my phone for least is phone calls. That doesn't mean I should shrug my shoulders and go "oh well, I don't use it much" when I find out my phone doesn't actually ring for half my phone calls. (Ah HTC Hero, how I miss thee)
"mere feet" is a big deal while driving, even if that were the major complaint, which it isn't. (Sometimes it makes no attempts to talk to sats, other time it sees 3 but never locks. Other times it locks fine, but loses GPS at some point, never to return)
Mere feet in a big city can mean it not even knowing what road you're on, telling you to turn right 2 seconds after you passed your turn, and then not being narrowed in enough to realize it needs to reroute, until often times that route is now also moot.

I have had the same problem and did the reboot thing to get my gps back also - but what I have found that works for me and is better and faster than a reboot, YMMV, is that I turn on airplane mode and than I turn it off and doing so it relocks/finds my gps again - faster than a reboot - and yes, I have done it while I was driving, but hey no worse than dialing a phone number.

First GPS Issue

So, for the most part, this phone has done a pretty good job with GPS locks so far. Besides the fact that my accuracy when using Goog Navigation is constantly fluctuating with the ominous blue circle around the car, I have been pleased. Today, though, google maps showed me several hundred miles north of my actual position. I toggled GPS, closed goog maps, and reopened...and same issue. I downloaded GPS toolbox, wiped a-gps cache, restarted goog maps, and the issue was resolved. Fast lock, correct location...however, this DOES give me some cause for concern. Anyone else seem anything similar?
Keep in mind, for the most part, I have been reasonably pleased with the locks. I have only seen this bad of an issue once
I haven't used it that much but on pleased as well. I use to use an apo called gps aids for my original epic. Sorry can't help more but I've only used gps once to make sure I got a lock. See if that apps helps u though.

Not to contradict but telnav basic software is free and does not need a monthly fee. The fee is only for the optional premium purchase which includes lane assist, red light cameras, speed traps, posted speed limits, and commute alerts. None of the premium features I need or want anyway, so the basic free software works for me.

I had an issue with my gps not wanting to get a lock all day a couple days ago. I downloaded gps test cleared agps and updated it, and still wouldn't work correctly. Then all of a sudden it did work, right before I was going to do a battery pull. I'm not sure what happened.
Today I was navigating somewhere by downtown chicago and my gps all of a sudden started acting goofy and kept rerouting me. I had to take a couple different turns because I was relying on it. I kept testing the gps on my way back home, and noticed that it was off by about one city block, but the big problem was my pointer was off 90 degrees, and that is what created my rerouting confusion. 2 hours later, it seems like its good again.
I'm concerned about this, because when I did need it such as today, it started spazzing out on me. Is there a way to calibrate the compass?
Oh and I cleared agps and updated it again with the gps test, and I think that's what fixed it.

I haven't been having issues with the GPS really. I have had stronger locks with other phones but this one gets the job done. As for GPS getting crazy, if your in an area like a metro city with tall buildings then any GPS will go crazy. When I drive in Manhattan even my stand alone GPS goes a little crazy in certain areas.

This is happening to me on I-95 with no trees or buildings around
My gps is acting up again, since yesterday. With the gps test app, it is not locating any satellites, I'm not sure what to do, I still don't think it's a hardware issue though...but I'm not sure

Gps very fast

Over the years ive owned and used several blackberrys iphones and androids and I have never had the gps work as well as it does on the note 2. I mean I get a lock within seconds even when im indoors which has never happened for me before
How would I go about determining what is different about my note 2 from my other phones so as to preserve the settings and apply them when I find it not working as well?

Really? Are you using the Rogers I317M? I don't even get *any* GPS fix at all...

I have the telus i317m but man I am just floored with how fast it connects in the past ive had to restart th3 phones before even getting a gps lock which would still usually take another 10 mins.
Are you on a custom rom or stock?

I got a Rogers Note 2 and it connects very quickly as well. Correct me if im wrong but the galaxy line of phones i below actually have a real gps receiver built in that works with gps satellites where other phonea like iphones and blackberries use the wireless signal (data) to detect gps position.

I agree with the OP. GPS issues with the original Note was the single biggest reason I wanted to upgrade, but it also made me hesitant. GPS was terrible on the original Note (at least for me). I always had to end up downloading some third party app that was supposed to help the GPS lock quicker. It worked sometimes, but other times it didn't do much. *Knock on wood* seems like the GPS issues has been fixed on the Note II. I always get an almost instant connection. Very happy about that, as I use navigation a lot when I travel about.

That may be the case for some of the older phones but I know for a fact that the phones I had had a built in gps receiver. I suppose they just had software or hardware issues which prevented them from locking quickly? Trying to figure out exactly what it is now so I can hopefully keep it going for this note II and potentially help those who can't get a quick lock.

I attempted to use Google nav today and felt that there was a bit of lag between me turning and the app updating with the next instruction. It took a good 10 seconds for the final address to appear as I turned onto the last street near my destination. Perhaps it's a fault of the app and not GPS tracking.

[Q] Damn GPS!

Hi ALL!
I have had webOS phone before and I was having identical problem like im having with i9250 now!
The GPS receiver is not functioning right. It has never worked %100 or %0. It struggles to find satellites and seems like working %20s
I have made some tests indoor near a window. (clear sky) It can not find any satellites from any indoor place near windows.
For the outdoor GPS receiver can find 8-9 satellites at signal rate of max %35. (GPS status app)
I have also made some test indoor with a Sony Xperia and Iphone 4s vs. Google Nexus. Both Sony and Apple can lock on a satellite without wifi/3g aid but nexus NOT!
I have made some search and see that some Google Nexus devices works great but some devices struggles.
There was no real fix with my webOS phone so I sold it. So my question? Is there a real way to fix this problem or is this my destiny?

Are you 100% stock?
Have you tried the GPS test apps in the market?

I have that too, i just reset GPS data and download assistance every so often. It sucks my skyrocket and nexus 7 get it fine. Some days it is unusable for navigation.

Sorry for the misplaced thread.
I am %100 stock. I was having this problem with locked non-rooted 4.0.4 so ppl suggested my to update and i installed 4.2.1 with no success on the GPS. I tried almost every GPS test apps and tricks with no success. I am in a doubt that my nexus devices uses the same gps receiver like in my webOS device.
No matter if some other device manages to get a signal indoors its completely unreasonable to expect GPS to work indoors.
You're in a fixed location. Why would you even want it to? You don't know where you are?
With stock and ICS i had minor issues with locking on speeds and the direction of which way my phone was pointing compared to the arrow in maps. Generally locked on to 5-7 satellites.
When upgrading to 4.1, and now 4.2 (custom roms) I now lock on to 9-12 satellites in under 5 seconds using GPS status, map location, arrow direction and north are all excellent. My radio is also the latest.

Yes I have been kidnapped and hidden in a building. If you are American and reading this message please call 911.
But I understand your statement. Yes there are completely unreasonable phones in the market.
And I wish an unreasonable phone to lock on a SAT at least near windows, not in the metro area nor in a garage or toilet.

Indoor or Outdoor?
Now I have tried a Galaxy SII(friends) with 6 lock on to satellites in a few seconds in the same place.
The question is why some nexus' and why me =) I am sure if I have chance to find another Nexus i9250 it may perform as good as Xperia/4S or S2 i tried but not some nexus. I bought this device 3 weeks ago and it is manufactured in August 2011.

Ok smartass
GPS are objects in celestial orbit with an output power well below the noise floor.
You have no hope of navigating indoors.
But since you seem to know it all........good luck jerk off.

Lol try flashing a galaxy nexus jellybean gps fix zip, google it or search xda, paranoid android had a gps fix in OP for their 2.99 beta 6 rom (i think) as it seems to be an issue with gnex and jellybean. When you find a suitable zip flash it in recovery. Good luck and hope it gets your gps fixed. I got mine working good its handy when at home to find local businesses via google and for other apps, as i am disabled so cant travel around looking for stuff, so i can understand why you want it fully functional. I heard that hirrudoid cream is good for hemaroids
sent via xda app from starkissed maguro gnex paranoid beta9
