So i hadn't noticed until just now. But for whatever reason. After flashing to ICS when i hook my phone up to my pc via supplied Sony cable, My Ion notifies me that "internal and Sd card mounted" well.. thats fine and dandy however, I'm not seeing EITHER on my PC. I've restarted the phone multiple times, as well as the PC. What i'm finding to be even more odd is that Normally when I would click on the notification it would take me to some settings page for mounting etc etc... that doesn't happen.. actually nothing happens when i select the notification..EVEN stranger than that... imo... is that when I turn off USB debugging I now get a "portable devices" section under My computer where i'd normally see the removable drives pop up. Under this section I now see Xperia Ion with a lil thumbnail of the phone and "portable media player" underneath it... WTF [email protected]! Now when i click that i'm presented with my internal storage and SD card... this was so confusing that I thought i'd at least share my experience and frustrations for others.. Clearly everything is working.. just hadn't noticed this change until just now... WEIRD!
le sigh.....I LIED!
so while it does show Internal Storage and SD Card under Portable media Player... however... i'm unable to see ext_card <which is where all my video files from the camera are under DICM... i'm so confused...
when I re-enable USB debugging... the Xperia ION Portable Meida Player icon disappears... even though my phone still says "internal and SD connected to pc"
anyone else noticing this? or perhaps found a workaorund just curious if i'm the only having this issue? mayb due to flashing ICS over stock ATT without wipes?
this was not like this in GB. that i recall

Not sure why it's happening but on gb I sometimes have the same problem, if I'm lazy I just let it sit there for awhile and eventually my ext card will pop up or I just restart my computer ( unplug first)
Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
but ur saying a pc restart fixes the error for you and your able to see ext_card after restart? b/c i'm not...
another interesting side note to this dilemma is that I can clearly see the folder I want to access via my PC has not been mounted by simply opening any file manager on my ION while it is connected > ext_card what i mean is .. this folder is clearly NOT being mounted when it should be.. correct?
this is quite annoying to have to turn off my ion open the back cover and take out the micro sd and put it in an adapter and put it in my PC rather than just hooking up the cable... really wanna get to the bottom of this as i'm constantly taking videos <large ones at that> and moving them to my PC... this is a must have function for me...
I had this problem after rooting. All you have to do is unmount using your phone - take it out and put it back in. All problems went away.
Sent from my LT28h using Tapatalk 2
I don't think that's the case in my situation. I've removed and reinserted the card multiple times and the situation is the same for me.
edit: just tried as u suggested. plugged phone in. = no ext_card. left phone plugged in. unmounted card on phone. removed from phone. put back in phone. re-mounted. STILL no ext_card on PC.
interesting this is happening across multiple OS's
some with root some without...
i know this wasn't like this when i had GB but now that i think about it. i only used it once mayb twice before flashing to ICS....
i'm at a loss for what could be causing the issue

Sorry mate, wouldn't know the solution to that. The only thing I did different was unmount while unplugged. However I doubted that would fix.

Both cards show up up on Windows(yuck) but they don't on Linux. ADB will mount them but they will not show in home folder or desktop. IDK.

Ok... If USB Debugging is turned on, Windows 7 glitches and will NOT properly read both internal and external cards at the same time... At least for me. To get the internal storage to show up, I just simply turned off USB debugging.
Goto Settings > Xperia > USB connection mode
If "MTP" (Media Transfer Mode) is selected, you "should" see both the internal and external SD cards upon plugging to your PC. This is under the assumption that USB Debugging is turned off. Like I said before, if it's on, I have experienced issues with Windows 7.
If "MSC" (Mass Storage Mode) is selected, regardless of if USB Debugging is selected, your PC should only allow your external SD card to attach to PC. (You can still use ADB commands to access internal storage)
Also, I personally went and uninstalled PC companion, and now block it from install completely. Check the settings mentioned, and see if you possibly missed something. If they all match perfect to what I said, maybe a reflash?
Just to chime in, this is not just a problem with ICS, but a problem in 2.3 as well.

yes as i mentioned in my first post. with usb debugging off. internal and SD card show up under xperia ion in my computer. HOWEVER, when i click on SD card... there is no folder EXT_CARD... which is where my videos are located... so what u are experiencing sounds exactly like what i'm experiencing as well

Any update to this? I think the MS MTP protocol is meant to work only with Media player, or something like that.
For me, it doesn't matter whether I have UDB on or not, the only thing that changes the access is changing from MTP to MSC, and then the internal memory isn't accessible. This whole thing is pretty ridiculous.
What I've found to work, so far in Windows, is Android Commander. See's both internal and external memory and allows full access, so far.
Get a file manager app copy the video folder to the root of your SD card. Ext_card is just how the phone differentiates between internal and external and if I'm not mistaken when you plug your phone in and turn on mtm just your phone comes up then inside that should be two folders. That's how it was for me but once I'm out of class ill double check and give you my details for it. What I did notice just as a side note, some stuff I coppied off my SD card from my i777 like pics and vids and pdf files wont show up in the phone. I reformated the card before I put my ion stuff on it and then the old files. Doesn't matter about that though just tossing it out there.
Also debug mode might cause issues. That is under settings> applications >development

I cant seem to replicate this. I have had zero issue with mounting or reading. I plug my phone in and get a separate directory for my Ion. Once I open it I have my two cards showing. I just went in and pulled a video off the internal storage and copied it to my computer with no issue. I have not installed PC companion.
One thing I do like about this device is it cuts out the step of mounting from the phone. You just plug it in and go which is kinda nice.

I don't know about connecting through HDMI port, USB to USB I think it what we're all talking about.
If I turn on MSC, then the External card is visible and editable, but the internal memory become unavailable. When you switch the connectivity over to MSC, it evens tells you this will happen.
So are you saying that in MSC mode, you can access and edit both internal and external memory on your LT28?

Yes I took a pic off my SD card put it on my phone mem and the reverse. Any folders on my phone mem that show up as. .foldername wont show up on PC. And SD card isn't usable on your phone while its connected
Is there something you did you can tell me step by step so were on the same page so I see what you're attempting? Also of you get the app file manager you can just copy a folder and move it on the phone

i made a tb from my droid 4..so how do i transfer that backup to my gnex properly?
i did once thru gdrive, and i only had like 1/4 of my apps, and there were only "?" marks for the backups.
im not trying to transfer system apps tho
Copy & paste the folder?
Adb push the folder?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
idk how to adp push..i googled it once, and i dont think that was what i was looking for. and if it involves a pc, i dont have one.
copy and paste was what i did..so no go.
thanks
i wonder if the tb file is to big to copy and paste esp thru google drive or a cloud storage
does the droid 4 have a removable sd card? if so, you can put the Tibu backup folder on the sdcard, and use an sdcard to usb adapter and a usb otg cable to transfer the files to your gnex. but you might have to be rooted to use an otg cable, i can't remember. i don't use mine too often.
Using a computer would make it a non-issue. You're sure there's no way you can access one?
ok thanks fella's
my gf has a laptop but i havent seen her in 2weeks because of my work schedule.
i will try to put my sd card in her laptop and transfer via usb from her laptop to my gnex.
but since these apps have never been installed on my gnex, will tb restore them on the gnex with out any problems?
You should transfer the entire contents of the titanium backup folder into the same directory on the Gnex. It's better if you let the app make one then overwrite it with the actual data.
so download the app, and then let the tb restore the data for that app?
if so, thats sooo time consuming esp with my work schedule. but i will if i have to.
whats up with the dropbox storage option for tb pro? how do i set that up?
basicly that option means, i dont have to have a tb on my sd card what so ever? just have one in dropbox?
cause that would be convienent to have one tb for 2phones, by just keeping one tb in dropbox.
i found my problem. it was saving app data instead of the app..lol
i dont know how or why

I have recently purchased an ADATA and a Samsung 64gb micro SD cards for use with my note 2. Both of these do not allow me to store more than 4gbs of data. All I am trying to do is fill up the cards with mp3 files, organized into folders. If I transfer more than 4gbs all the folders show once the card is inserted in the phone but a majority of the folders are empty even though I know 100% the mps files are in the folders before transfer. I assumed this was due to the cheaper brand ADATA's quality but its the same with the Samsung.
Anyone know whats going on here or what Ill need to do to take advantage of the full 64gb?
Thanks,
Is it formated to exfat?

The adata was, I have seen that FAT32 is best but it was not an option when formatting in windows.
The samsung I have formatted in the phone, then used an SD adapter in my laptop to transfer the files, im not sure what format it is and cannot check right now unless it is possible for me to view this on the device?

The ADATA was in exFAT and only allowed up to 4gb out of the 64gb it should have been
The samsung I am using now was formatted in the phone but i used an adapter in my laptop to transfer. Will it be worth trying to transfer via the usb cable and the device?
Iv spent at least 6 hours transferring and formatting now, just want an answer!

You probably have an adapter for your pc that can't handle xD cards - older adapters can only handle cards up to 32gb in size. Go down to Radio Shack and buy an adapter that specifically handles xD (I.e. >32 gb) cards. Using older non-xD adapters with xD cards will almost surely lead to what you're seeing. Don't worry - your new adapter will also handle "lesser" cards.

I just tried formatting in the device, and transferred over 14gbs of music over. After a scan the music player only finde 4.1gb of data meaning around 10gbs has been lost for some reason. I didnt use an adaptor this time, I transferred via USB but still the same thing has happened.
Is there a way round this that does not require me to partition my SD card? I only ask as I have done no research on this and would like a simple resolution.
Thanks,
Your card might be fake. People on ebay and other sites offer cards and usb sticks that look like large capacity cards whereas they actually modified low capacity cheap cards. I don't know the name of the tool anymore, but there are test tools around that can tell you whether your card is a fake or not. I was screwed with a USB stick once...

This is starting to put me of the device altogether now! Searched high and low, not just on XDA but all over the place, lots of people having the same issue. no one able to offer a clear resolution, either they have a 64Gb card that works, or one that don't. I'm trying to use a Samsung branded card as I assumed this would be the safest bet.
I've read stuff about partitions, turning the card into mass storage rather than media storage, and plenty of other suggestions, nothing works or is simply irrelevant. Has anyone that has experienced the same issue managed to get it working?
I'm not even looking to have use of the full 64Gb but I want allot more than the 4Gb maximum the card is currently providing!!!
Look the 4gb you are talking is when the FILE is 4GB NOT the FOLDER. Check your mp3 folder maybe you find a movie in it has 4GB and you didnt notice.

There is no individual file on the card that is anywhere near 4gb in size, but I do try to transfer well over 4gb at once but each FILe s no more than 6 to 8mb.
I do not understand much about partitioning, any chance of linking me to a basic explanation or guide? Everything Iv found so far has been a little complex.
Most of the folders I try to put on the memory card still show but under weird names, please see attachment for examples. Also now there seem to be some protection on the micro sd card I am unable to remove, I attempt to delete folders with the file browser app and I am told the folder has been deleted but it is not removed at all and when I try via my computer connecting the phone to my laptop via USB I am told there is write protection which I cannot remove. What's all that about??

From my experience.
1. Partitioning is like when you partition your hard disk drive on desktop or laptop, say you got 500gb hdd u partition it to 100gb drive c and 400gb drive d for example. Now you dont want that on your sd card.
2. About the lock thing if you insert your microsd card to pc through microsd card adapter you will find a work Lock and a button that goes up and down. There is an arrow next to lock word that points down for lock so u need the lock button to be up so u can edit your files easily.
3. Try to double check again that folder thoroughly there must be a 4gb file u didnt notice becuz when my external hdd was format to fat32 had the same problem then I knew fat32 doesnt support 4gb files not folders.
4. Look some 64gb cards say there are bugs when not formatting to exfat so give exfat a try.
5. I think you might have virus that makes wierd folder names.

I still think it is a fake card. Had exactly the same behaviour with a fake usb stick once. If you can, get your money back from the seller. Up to the actual size all goes fine, but when putting more data on it, it starts to overwrite existing data on the card, leading to corruption. I have an official Sandisk 64Gb in my NoteII without any problems, both on fat32 as well as exfat.

It may be the memory card, I purchased it quite cheap for a 64gb from ebay. Could it potentially have anything to do with the firmware I use? Iv contacted Samsung technical about this and they advised looking for a firmware update...
It's not quiet clear to me if you get any error messages while transferring, or if it successfully transferred all files but they are not longer there..
1) Can you see the files on the card from computer? (when phone connected via USB or using adapter)
2) Can you see the files on the card from the phone? (via any file manager, not music players or galleries)
3) How much used/free space on the card showed in phone and computer? (on the phone Settings -> Storage, on computer, right click on the card in my computer -> properties)
Odds that both cards are fake are quiet slim, I'd assume.
There is no such thing as incompatible adapter with xD cards, simply because MicroSD to SD adapters contain no electronics inside, they are all mechanical and the same. However, card reader is another story, it could be incompatible with xD cards, in which case the result would be unpredictable, to the point that it could corrupt other files already on the card.
But that would not affect transferring files directly to the phone via USB.

I don't receive any error messages at all, the files seem to transfer fine but once I try to play some of the MP3s with power amp I am shown 'Failed to play file! "name of track".mp3'. It seems to be only the first 4gb of tracks I transfer are playable once on the device.
Going to start again...
-I have connected my note 2 via usb, using windows 7. Right clicked 'card' under 'GT-N7105' and selected format.
-I have copied 16.4gb (minus the odd playlist, jpeg or text file in some of the folders) of MP3 organised into folders by album and pasted onto 'card'...
-9.99Gb show on the card via the laptop before I disconnect
-Settings on phone show 62.50Gb total space, 45.94Gb available, so 16.56Gb should be used.
-Using the stock file browser most of the folders the MP3s are organised in are empty
- I select several random tracks to play in PowerAmp but get the 'cannot play file' message
- restart device
-try playing random tracks with poweramp but having the same issue, that most cannot be played
-storage settings now show 62.50gb total, 58.51gb available. so only 3.99gb of the mp3s are on the card now.
-connect via USB again and properties shows only 3.92gb on the card are used
Again no more than 4Gb can be used!!
no matter what ive tried nothing seems to have worked. Even the guys at Samsung support couldnt help! They suggested a sandisc card so Iv purchased a 32gb sandisc card which works perfect. Oh well....
First and foremost I thank you for taking the time to read this. Until a few days ago, I had an app on my ipod 4g called usb drive a jailbreak app that you could select a specific amount of space and use it as a usb drive. My ipod is has moved on to a better place after years of great service. Ok and before you scratch your head, yes I could use the storage on the sd card cause unlike apple you can do that with my phone. Of course I'm not that new here to ask for something I can already do. The reason I used my ipod and this app is because you could use that space and format it to be a bootable drive. Example I could use that space to install Windows or use it as a live cd ect... is there an app like this for Android. Going through the play store I saw a couple apps that let you use the external sd card as a usb drive but none that I could where you could select your space. If one doesn't exist and I went with using my external sd card does anyone know if I could make it bootable. I would rather get feedback from someone before just trying it cause if I format it and it formats internal by accident my phone would not do well as a paperweight. Thanks in advance for your time
Edit.... found an app called drivedroid. Will change this to a review one I confirm it works

You'd need a custom ROM that supports UMS. I don't know if there are any, so that's as far as I can help you.
UMS was pretty much abandoned in ICS though (though you could still force it on some phones; mostly Samsungs). After ICS, MTP became the only option. I hate MTP too... my 2010 car can only read UMS and not MTP. I used to be able to plug my phone into the car to listen to music, but now I can't. And going out and buying a new car isn't exactly an option!
Try this..it might be a hit and miss sometimes but works..note it will only ummount the external sd-card, so your car can play music stored only on the external sd-card
