So i hadn't noticed until just now. But for whatever reason. After flashing to ICS when i hook my phone up to my pc via supplied Sony cable, My Ion notifies me that "internal and Sd card mounted" well.. thats fine and dandy however, I'm not seeing EITHER on my PC. I've restarted the phone multiple times, as well as the PC. What i'm finding to be even more odd is that Normally when I would click on the notification it would take me to some settings page for mounting etc etc... that doesn't happen.. actually nothing happens when i select the notification..EVEN stranger than that... imo... is that when I turn off USB debugging I now get a "portable devices" section under My computer where i'd normally see the removable drives pop up. Under this section I now see Xperia Ion with a lil thumbnail of the phone and "portable media player" underneath it... WTF [email protected]! Now when i click that i'm presented with my internal storage and SD card... this was so confusing that I thought i'd at least share my experience and frustrations for others.. Clearly everything is working.. just hadn't noticed this change until just now... WEIRD!
le sigh.....I LIED!
so while it does show Internal Storage and SD Card under Portable media Player... however... i'm unable to see ext_card <which is where all my video files from the camera are under DICM... i'm so confused...
when I re-enable USB debugging... the Xperia ION Portable Meida Player icon disappears... even though my phone still says "internal and SD connected to pc"
anyone else noticing this? or perhaps found a workaorund just curious if i'm the only having this issue? mayb due to flashing ICS over stock ATT without wipes?

Not sure why it's happening but on gb I sometimes have the same problem, if I'm lazy I just let it sit there for awhile and eventually my ext card will pop up or I just restart my computer ( unplug first)
Sent from my LT28at using xda premium
but ur saying a pc restart fixes the error for you and your able to see ext_card after restart? b/c i'm not...
another interesting side note to this dilemma is that I can clearly see the folder I want to access via my PC has not been mounted by simply opening any file manager on my ION while it is connected > ext_card what i mean is .. this folder is clearly NOT being mounted when it should be.. correct?
this is quite annoying to have to turn off my ion open the back cover and take out the micro sd and put it in an adapter and put it in my PC rather than just hooking up the cable... really wanna get to the bottom of this as i'm constantly taking videos <large ones at that> and moving them to my PC... this is a must have function for me...
I had this problem after rooting. All you have to do is unmount using your phone - take it out and put it back in. All problems went away.
Sent from my LT28h using Tapatalk 2
I don't think that's the case in my situation. I've removed and reinserted the card multiple times and the situation is the same for me.
edit: just tried as u suggested. plugged phone in. = no ext_card. left phone plugged in. unmounted card on phone. removed from phone. put back in phone. re-mounted. STILL no ext_card on PC.
interesting this is happening across multiple OS's
some with root some without...
i know this wasn't like this when i had GB but now that i think about it. i only used it once mayb twice before flashing to ICS....
i'm at a loss for what could be causing the issue

Sorry mate, wouldn't know the solution to that. The only thing I did different was unmount while unplugged. However I doubted that would fix.

Ok... If USB Debugging is turned on, Windows 7 glitches and will NOT properly read both internal and external cards at the same time... At least for me. To get the internal storage to show up, I just simply turned off USB debugging.
Goto Settings > Xperia > USB connection mode
If "MTP" (Media Transfer Mode) is selected, you "should" see both the internal and external SD cards upon plugging to your PC. This is under the assumption that USB Debugging is turned off. Like I said before, if it's on, I have experienced issues with Windows 7.
If "MSC" (Mass Storage Mode) is selected, regardless of if USB Debugging is selected, your PC should only allow your external SD card to attach to PC. (You can still use ADB commands to access internal storage)
Also, I personally went and uninstalled PC companion, and now block it from install completely. Check the settings mentioned, and see if you possibly missed something. If they all match perfect to what I said, maybe a reflash?
Just to chime in, this is not just a problem with ICS, but a problem in 2.3 as well.

Any update to this? I think the MS MTP protocol is meant to work only with Media player, or something like that.
For me, it doesn't matter whether I have UDB on or not, the only thing that changes the access is changing from MTP to MSC, and then the internal memory isn't accessible. This whole thing is pretty ridiculous.
What I've found to work, so far in Windows, is Android Commander. See's both internal and external memory and allows full access, so far.
Get a file manager app copy the video folder to the root of your SD card. Ext_card is just how the phone differentiates between internal and external and if I'm not mistaken when you plug your phone in and turn on mtm just your phone comes up then inside that should be two folders. That's how it was for me but once I'm out of class ill double check and give you my details for it. What I did notice just as a side note, some stuff I coppied off my SD card from my i777 like pics and vids and pdf files wont show up in the phone. I reformated the card before I put my ion stuff on it and then the old files. Doesn't matter about that though just tossing it out there.
Also debug mode might cause issues. That is under settings> applications >development

I cant seem to replicate this. I have had zero issue with mounting or reading. I plug my phone in and get a separate directory for my Ion. Once I open it I have my two cards showing. I just went in and pulled a video off the internal storage and copied it to my computer with no issue. I have not installed PC companion.
One thing I do like about this device is it cuts out the step of mounting from the phone. You just plug it in and go which is kinda nice.

I don't know about connecting through HDMI port, USB to USB I think it what we're all talking about.
If I turn on MSC, then the External card is visible and editable, but the internal memory become unavailable. When you switch the connectivity over to MSC, it evens tells you this will happen.
So are you saying that in MSC mode, you can access and edit both internal and external memory on your LT28?

Yes I took a pic off my SD card put it on my phone mem and the reverse. Any folders on my phone mem that show up as. .foldername wont show up on PC. And SD card isn't usable on your phone while its connected
Is there something you did you can tell me step by step so were on the same page so I see what you're attempting? Also of you get the app file manager you can just copy a folder and move it on the phone

Can we still access anything from it then using a file manager like I can only the SGS2?
you will not see/feel the difference. Don't worry.
Here is my question, considering the lack of SD card on this thing, can I put my movies on an external SD card (or even a hdd, but whod want to tote one around?!) and then plug a reader into this thing using a USB OTG cable and then watch them on the phone? Just a thought. I need more storage than 32 GB... I've got 16GB of music alone...

Here is more info regarding USB mass storage. it does not support UMS (because the phone does not have a SD slot) but support MTS.

Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself, but I'm kinda curious how we are meant to transfer files that are not the general media files. The only thing that I really am thinking of is transferring/synchronising my ROM backups from ROM manager (when I root the Nexus I have yet to recieve).
Any ideas?

The PTP option in the image I linked above acts like the file transfer mode you're after.
Has already been answered. PTP mode instead of MTP.
I guess I'm not understanding something because I thought PTP was for photos (originally used by cameras) and not for other filetypes.
So PTP will just transfer files as a UMS into the fake /sdcard directory (reading the interview)?
Yeeeeeeeesssssss. We told you no need to re-ask. answer will stay the same.

Sorry sorry sorry. Thanks for clearing that up. I will proceed to the dunce corner for 15mins!
Even in PTP mode mine still behaves like a media device rather than a storage device. I don't get a proper file copy dialogue and it still warns me that I might not be able to play files on my device as I copy them which I think will get VERY annoying over time. The only difference I can see in PTP mode is that it looks like a camera in 'Computer' rather than an MP3 player.
So can I copy for example .apk files to my phone?
I think it is a very interesting question. I see that you have written in some comments, that if you enable the PTP mode, you can copy files from computer to the Nexus. Can you copy everything, and not only pictures, videos, or songs? Can we copy for example .apk files too? Or it isn't allowed?

you can copy anything to it, but it isn't treated as a drive, for example when copying *.mkv's to it a warning comes up stating that the device might not be able to play it and you have to press yes to continue. Copy dialogues are also dumbed down and don't show as accurate progress.
Thanks!

Do you really listen to all 16GB's worth of music that you have every day?
Seriously people. You don't need all of your music library on your phone. Keep the songs you like and listen to the most, and you can always stream any oddballs from Google Music or Amazon MP3 via the data you pay for or wifi.
Just my 2 cents
I've been having troubles connecting in MTP mode since I bought this 32GB AData UHS-I uSD card.
First, didn't connect at all, deleted MTPApp data, checked "Install PC Companion" and sometimes it connects BUT I can't see the SD.
All is working in Mass Storage but it seems like MediaGo does something wrong and I can't see my music in my phone.
Also, I hate having things not working in my phone.
How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance.
Me too....
But im too lazy to search for it. I just use MSC to transfer files....
This happens to me especially when you put MP3s on it. I don't know but if there weren't any MP3 files, the sd mounts quickly in MTP mode.
But if you wait awhile the sd mounts in MTP. Even though at first the Play is detected but no memory card.
Try mounting with USB debugging enabled

Uhm... how much is a while?
I remember waiting for as long as 10~15 minutes.
Also my SD has no media on it besides the game files a couple of ringtones in their proper folders and so.
Try switching from MTP to MSC them back again while the USB is inserted. It's a tedious process but it works with me. Otherwise, do a pc companion firmware repair.

I've got the same problem and I've long ago abandoned the idea of fixing it as I tried lots of different tricks but nothing really worked.
So now I just use it in MSC mdoe.
ICS ROM
I got tired of this and some other issues with Link2SD and finally flashed an ICS ROM (Darkforest ICS, based on Sony's official ICS beta).
The ICS' implementation of MTP seems much better than the GB one...
The only thing I kind of miss is the frontal camera .
can any one help me and suggest a method to enable the mass storage mode in my note 2 , when connected to my laptop ?
Firstly why? MTP is better when you get it working as you don' t need to unmount anything from the phone first!
Secondly, it is likely to be possible yes probably very similar to how it was hacked to work on the s3, however it only worked for external sd and caused lots of corruptions to sd cards... so it is far from perfect.
My advice would be to get used to MTP.
i was need it to let my stereo car read mp3 files i solved by installing an s3 hack that can make the extsd a mass storage unit take a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009 it worked for me i'm with omega v4 rom

External memory I can manage by taking out my card and using an adapter to plug it into my laptop card slot..

try Kies over wifi...
it transfer data using local connection and transfers GBs of files in some minutes definitely MUCH faster than MTP and prefer it to AirDroid, but it hasnt been working lately (last time i checked was a week or two back)
This is a problem for those like me using Ubuntu. I never managed to make MTP work on it.
Wi-Fi transfer of files can be done with X-Link, but the lack of mass storage is a nuisance.

Yes, MTP is a big problem on Ubuntu. I have tried 3 implementations of MTP protocol on 12.04 and 12.10, no dice.
i'm searching for an answer. worst thing with mtp is the fact that it hides directories from you! so you can't backup everything properly. annoying
bump! MTP is too/painfully slow. Reminds me of 1995. We need an alternative. Whoever put up this technology without due consideration and testing, before deploying it on these popular devices needs to be consider a different job.

Unfortunately, there is no way to enable UMS mode without rooting the phone.
I had to find a solution for my car stereo be able to read mp3 files.
I just rooted the phone and install SGS3 easy UMS ( PlayStore ). Yes its working just perfect on NoteII.
I'm using Ubuntu at work and it works like a charm as well.
Don't forget to unmount the drive in Ubuntu before unplug, and stop the service on Windows.
Also, on the UMS app, switch back to MTP before unplug, to avoid files errors ( no problem if u are just reading, ie: car stereo)

Hello,

Gah.... I was hoping there was a way to USB mass storage on this phone. I guess I should have done more research on the phone before I bought it. I'm still in my 2 week return it period, but that's not THAT much of a deal breaker. Just really stupid... Why can't I have it all?? I mean we finally got USB host (OTG or whatever; same same) from a stock phone, only to lose USB Mass Storage! Oh the frustrations!
Dramatics aside, will a custom ROM allow something different? I'm not clear on what layer this MTP mode is operating at. I did think it was funny that it popped up as a camera type device in Windows. Right now I'm only using internal flash. Usually I want to browse pics on the phone from the PC, and in this case, if I use IrfanView to open one on the device, it copies it local and then opens it, so I can't scroll through them. Silly, and mildly frustrating. :-/
I'm going to look into some networking options to see if those work (Kies, AirDroid, maybe FTP). Actually, Dropbox might solve this particular problem for me now that I think of it.
I saw the thread for mounting external SD as USB mass storage. I take it there's no way to co-mount the internal storage as a USB mass storage device?

Well, Samsung turned off the USB Mass Storage for obvious reasons. But anyway, I can access both memories from my computers, using MS Windows.
On windows, there's no problem at all as you can manage all the files directly from explorer.
On Other systems, the problem is different. For some reasons, like with all other systems (ie car stereo or media player...), the galaxy will not be recognized because MTP needs drivers. Then, you have to use UMS and the only way to install and use it is to root the phone. But keep in mind UMS will only permit access to external memory card.
Well, if I have to transfer files from internal memory through UMS, I copy the files I need to external memory before using it..... That's not a big problem , is it ? And because your phone is rooted, you can even find a script to copy some folders automatically.
Hope I'm clear enough and it helps.
I have tried transferring files via My Files app, File Expert, Astro, as well as connecting to PC via USB... it always gives an error and says unable to write! I have also tried to transfer from internal to external SD, still just says "copying failed". I've also tried via Kies.
The external SD is not locked as I used it in a previous phone, and the Note 2 can see the files on it (and play the music).
What's going on?!?

For anyone with a similar problem described above, please try another USB cable. In some systems, the white USB cable that comes with this phone doesn't send data to computers properly - it supplies power but has problems with data.
Many people have reported this. I just confirmed it on my system. I connected my Note 2 to my system with 5 other usb cords and my system found the device every time. When I used Samsung's white usb cable the computer didn't see the Note 2.
Either Samsung did something with this usb cable or they're sending a lot of defective usb cables out.

I am using a different cable and it detects the card, but as the others have said, it is "write protected" randomly.
I have even transferred all data to internal, formatted my external SD (via the Note 2 option), moved everything back over, it wrote files fine for a few days, and now it is auto-write-protected again. This is kind of ridiculous and is really a hassle especially seeing as most people use external cards for media.
Bump for a fix hopefully... We should not have to reformat every few days just to be able to use our cards.
Thanks for the clarification. I haven't experienced this issue (yet) and agree this is not related to the white Samsung USB cord..
I wonder if the phone has problems with certain cards. What type, brand and size memory card are you guys who are experiencing this problem using?
I'm able to transfer files to and from SD card but not while in recovery mode. Only some files show on SD card while in recovery mode, backups fail, etc.. any ideas?
Ok, I have had this phone for 2 days now, and still don't know how to get it to show up as a USB mass storage device. Is there something that I'm missing here?
I have all the updated LG software installed. All other connection methods seem to work. I have even tried a widgetsoid switcher to force the issue, but that didn't do it like it did on an older phone I had.
It would sure be nice if this was an option in the USB menu. How hard would that have been?

I am wondering the same thing. I got around it by using the MicroSD card in a card reader but it would be nice to do it though the phone.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think native support for USB mass storage was discontinued in ICS. Some companies still provide it but it's not natively included anymore.

I really hope someone corrects you if you're wrong, because if you're not, that would be the most disappointing news of the year.

Don't you just go to settings and then pc connection, just select media and then hit cancel when its trying to sync? Shows up as 25GB mass storage for me.

Do you mean the popup on the phone? "Autorun is running to check USB driver"? If so, I tried that, but no dice.

Go here http://www.lg.com/us/support-mobile/lg-LS970 and get the USB drivers. Uninstall the ones you have if they are not the exact same, then reboot. On the phone select PC Connection in the System Settings Menu. Set the USB Connection to Media Sync (MTP) and check Ask on connection. Leave everything else off. When you plug it in it will say its checking USB driver, just hit skip, and it should mount. It may mount and unmount, then mount again.
This works for me.
You should update Windows Media Player if running on XP

Those are the exact drivers I have.
I have this "sort of" working here on my home PC (Windows 7). When I am connected as MTP, the phone shows up in My Computer and Device Manager under "Portable Devices". I can go into the internal storage, and move, cut, copy, delete files, but it's not even perfect because if I want to do something as simple as open an excel file, modify it, and then save it, I can't. Windows instead asks me to save in some temporary directory because it lacks the capability to save the file directly on the phone. Which is a major hassle.
On my work computer (XP) I have these drivers installed also, and I have also installed WMFDist11-WindowsXP-X86-ENU.exe since it asked me to. Following the same steps as above, upon hitting skip, nothing happens. It never shows up as a removable drive or portable device.
There has to be an app for this or something...

Try dual mount widget.

Well, it physically cant be mount as USB storage device, cause it will ruin files.
Unlike many other phones, The G dont have the Storage Card partition.
All your files are stored in /data/media, and mounting entire /Data/ partition as USB Storage will ruin the OS cause its being used by it.
There a folder called /Sdcard/, but its just a trick for old android apps, so all this stuff still actually stored in /Data/Media/

wow, you're right, everything I sent to my phone shows up in the /sdcard folder and also in /data/media.
why on earth would they do this? one of the best parts of android phones was that they were essentially giant usb sticks.
is this an absolutely insurmountable hardware issue? or could a new ROM/OS fix it? what about an app for creating a partition?
First of all, they did it cause of usual lacking of free space for the apps. Now you can fill all 25gbs with games and other stuff.
Second, the FAT32 just too old and bad. Since the G doesnt use the FAT FS and SD card, G doesnt have the file size limitations, pretty stable and got high write speed (Must be class 20)
I believe its must be possible to run as USB Storage from the custom recoveries, when the OS is not running.

I imagine that it will be able to do that too, but that's not very useful on a daily basis. I need it when the OS is running.
I used to use my phone to take files to work with me and back so that I could open and edit them at home. I never dreamed they would get rid of that functionality.
so no app is going to be able to take some of that space and partition it as an sd card, then?
But you still able to do it, dont you?
The only limitation of the MTP - you cant execute files directly from PC.
Also there an app called File Share, which probably solving that issue by sharing via WiFi, not the mtp.

i'll look into File Share.
and yes, technically i can open an excel file, edit it, save to my PC, then copy the new version onto my phone, overwriting the old one. but that's a major step backwards from where we were at three years ago.
looks like File Share wouldn't really do it for me, as both the phone and the computer would need to be on the same wireless network.
at home I have a wireless network, but my PC is wired.
at work my laptop has wireless capability but there is no wireless network.
My phone can be a wireless network, though. So an app that would allow my phone and work laptop to share files through that network, would do the trick.
Or, I need an app that does the opposite of Link2SD. Link2SD takes some SD space and uses it as ROM. I need an app to take some ROM space and make a virtual SD out of it.
Does something like that exist? I bet if it doesn't, it will soon!
I really like Airdroid, simple to use, I use it on a linux computer wich is aweful about mtp file transfer, for my sister's S2. It might be an option to consider while other development occurs.
