Sporadic menu capacitive button - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

at completely random times during the day my menu button would trigger for a good 5 seconds sometimes and then freeze ALL my capacitive buttons. can anyone think of a possible solution?
i'm guessing its a hardware defect but i wouldn't know how to handle sprint if that's the occasion

I had problems with unresponsive capacitive buttons on my og Epic 4G. It was a manufacturing defect and was covered by the manufacturer's warranty. I'd try to bring it back to a Sprint store with a repair facility and make a warranty claim against Samsung.

Mine has JUST started doing that over the past two days... I thought it was due to a Kernel I flashed, or a faulty APK. I ONLY experience the problem while using Handscent.

hmm i see.. well 1) my buttons respond fine its only when the menu button spazzes out that all the buttons freeze which a quick toggle of the power button would fix but i could wait outside a sprint store for it to happen. i would have to return to stock everything right?
2) do individual apks have capability to mess with the buttons outside of an app? i'm pretty sure its occurred throughout multiple apps but ill past more specific attention to when they occur
thanks guys any other input would be appreciated greatly, i do love this phone very much but this glitch is eating away at me

That is the same issue I have; the menu activates, then the entire phone is unresponsive (except the power button, which puts the screen to sleep as it should) for a few seconds.
Although, like I said, I've only noticed it while inside Handscent and trying to enter type a message. I can play games for an hour and never experience it.
It *IS* rather annoying.

I've had this issue for a while and only ever noticed it once I started flashing different ROMs. In my case I can happen in any app (I don't really play games so can't say for sure about that). Email, market, whatever I get it once in a while. Like others said pushing the power button off and on fixes it. If I also wait like 5 secs and don't try to keep pushing buttons it works too.

To those of you having this issue, see if it coincides with going into a low signal area. When I was doing LOS testing in a known dead spot, I noticed this happening as soon as I started getting really low signal. Check that out and please report back. I didn't say anything at the time (it was a while ago now) because I thought I had some user error going on

Man, I am glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. It's the wierdest thing... Eager to find a fix!

i know there was a thread about this months ago but it died because no one had a solution, this time around looks more promising!
the only rom i tend to find myself running is Calk`s and i don't believe i had any issues while i was running miui for a while but eventually i had to go back to calk because i needed 4g but it might just be an issue within the twiz framework or something
John your theory is interesting because i tend to get the issue largely when i'm at home and i have horrible service at home (i'm in the basement) and the past day I've been on the road a lot and ive yet to experience it so you might be on to something, just need some more people to test to confirm

For me, the problem started just over the past two weeks or so. I never had an issue before... Happens when I'm on Wifi as well as off Wifi.
I'm thinking I may just take it in for a warranty exchange. I've begun noticing it occasionally in other applications as well. Not the random menu button activation, but suddenly the capacitive buttons will simply be non responsive for 2 or 3 seconds.

it seems like thats the best way to go about it. frankly, im too lazy to backup all my stuff, unroot, reset the flash counter and then deal with samsung/sprint lol.
results from a couple days testing John's theory: its definitely more noticeable in low service areas and almost nonexistent when the signal is strong (i still get 1 or 2 presses from the menu button then it stops as opposed to several presses then all the buttons freeze). i dont know where to go from here... help

I have been looking at this myself. It only happens to me on the edge of a dead zone. If you have to press the softkeys multiple times in a good signal area, I would take your phone to get checked out. Some OG Epics had this issue too

I agree, but it would be best if you got it fixed by Sprint. Unrooting can be done by closely learning from this video(here, credits to QBKing77).

Mine seems to to it more often in low signal area's or switching back and forth from my airave. Havent really noticed it with full signal or on 4g but only time will tell. No root........

You shouldn't have to send it anywhere. This should fall within the manufacturer's 1 year warranty, which Sprint will honor with a $35 charge... They will (normally) order you a replacement phone and you will swap your old phone when the new one arrives... You shouldn't be without a phone at all.
I'm planning on visiting the Sprint store tonight to start the process, in fact.
After I flash back to stock.

how did it go for you? did you reset your binary counter before you exchanged it?
it sucks that WE pay the $35 charge to replace a hardware defect WE weren't responsible for..

Same thing here.
It's definitely more noticeable in low service areas and almost nonexistent when the signal is strong as has been said before.. Could be in an elevator or basement for example.. The power button solves the issue but the problem usually starts again if the service is still bad.
Just to report...
Tempted to contact Sprint about it.

Please do, and keep us apprised. Iv'e just learned to live with it, but would love to know what's going on.

Just to clear everything up, here's how it works:
You have a Samsung device with a one-year limited warranty. If you'd like, you can send your phone to them for a week, pay for shipping, and maybe get a replacement.
You have a Sprint product. If you'd like, you can take it in for repair (which takes about an hour), and a technician will either fix it - or order you a replacement (which has one-day shipping). If you have Total Equipment Protection, all repairs are free. If you don't, all repairs are $35.
The only time you would have to spend more than that is if you have a phone that is damaged beyond repair (liquid damage, cracked screen, damaged motherboard, etc) - and that would be a deductible of $100 to order a new phone through the insurance company, Assurion.

[Q] Strange screen issue

I have been having an issue with my screen. Randomly the screen will become unresponsive. I will be playing a game or something and the screen will not respond to my presses, even the buttons at the bottom dont work. If I hit the power button to turn off the screen and wait a second it will become responsive again. This happens while the phone is in my hands so I dont think it is the grounding issue. The other strange thing is sometimes like if I am typing a text it will start doing things on its own like typing a bunch of random letters and such. Or if I am on the homescreen it will try and resize widgets and slide to the next screen.
Anybody come across this issue or know what I can do to fix it? I am running Cyanogen right now but it happened on Fresh as well all with the stock kernels.
Thanks
Yes, I have that issue as well... When I first got the phone it was a rare occurrence, but over time it seems to have gotten worse and worse. It always seems to be worse if it's plugged into the charger, too.
I decided to do something about it today, so I just flashed the stock (rooted) Sprint OTA on it, and am planning to take it to the Sprint store to see if they will replace it under warranty if I can demonstrate the problem.
I'm heading there now. When I get back, I'll post what they say about it here.
Just got back from the Sprint store...
The technician spent about 20 minutes looking at my phone, then returned it to me saying "You're right, that's pretty annoying." and said that they would replace it under warranty for free. He ordered one and said I could come get it on Monday. I know I'll get a refurbished phone, but I figure a refurbished phone that works is better than a new phone that doesn't.
It would seem that it's a hardware problem, and you'll probably also have to get yours replaced, too.
ah bummer, thanks for posting that at least now I know. I just need to figure out how I can make the issue occur so I dont waste my time at the sprint store.
Just an update, they replaced the phone and I have not seen this issue since. I've nandroided the fresh rom I was using before back onto the phone, so it is definitely a hardware issue. Just take the phone into a service center and get them to exchange it and you should be good.

Gotta question...

So this lovely refurbished phone I recently received from best buy is going completely bat **** insane on me... This has to be the longest I've used it without it acting like I'm touching the screen and making it do just about anything and everything you can imagine...
My question is this... I haven't rooted this phone yet... Mainly because I don't see the point in it if the phone is gonna be acting crazy all the time anyways. Would this problem be hardware related or software related??? Would rooting it actually help it or even make a difference??? Should I just bring it back to best buy and roll the dice on another refurbished phone???
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you would be so kind as to explain a little more on the issues, but from what little you've stated sounds more like hardware. Why not just go drop it off at a Sprint store have them look at it and see what they say? if the screen is jumping from one home screen to another, hitting random keys, entering random apps, then its the touchscreen. if nothing of that happens, might just be software glitch. *#*#3424#*#* is a way to test your physical hardware, hit the line drawing test and if it skips any part of the screen it'll be your screen. i would then take it to a sprint S&R store, have them replace the screen and POOF! issue resolved. hope this helps.

So i tried the line drawing test and of course... It passed with flying colors. The jumping from home screen to home screen and hitting random keys and apps is exactly what this phone is doing... but it's kind of intermittent. Like I said the line test went fine, but once it starts goin nuts again, I wont even be able to enter the numbers to get to the line test, let alone take it...
Just take it back and have them order you another one. Refurbs are awful in terms of quality assurance. Back in January, I went through 6 refurbs, ALL of them had some major flaw or something that didnt work. I had to argue with sprint for hours to get them to send me a new one that would actually work.
Run a ruu to reset it first and see if that helps

Oddly enough... The phone has quit acting up. The past two days the phone hasn't givin me one little hiccup. I'm gonna root this ***** tomorrow and see what happens. But thanks for the advice you guys gave to help.
I've had something similar to this happen with mine a few times, but it's never been anything more than a Windows-style 1st troubleshooting step didn't fix. One reboot and it's as good as new. I don't reboot very often though, so I dunno if that's what causes it for me from time to time.
Honestly, if it ever gives you any more trouble again, just walk it right in that store and get yourself a new one...or another used one, whatever the case may be. When you do decide to go root though, make sure you take careful note of what HBOOT you have...

[Q] Does anyone have any experience with TEP and faulty phones?

I've had my Epic 4G Touch for well over a year and a month ago I noticed the power button was starting to feel "spongy". It still worked but it lacked that crisp feeling when you pressed it down and released it. This afternoon however, after flashing FI27, my power button no longer works whatsoever. I doubt it was the ROM and more due to the amount of times I've held this button down for recovery access, download mode, etc.
So the power button doesn't work, phone starts automatically when I remove the battery and put it back in. Otherwise the phone is in near-perfect condition and its not rooted.
Anyone know if TEP is going to cover this for free? I've looked online at some resources for TEP and everything is vague or above my level of reading between the lines.
Thanks in advance.
I just had this happen to me last week actually. Just plug the charger in and it'll wake up the phone. Set it back to stock unrooted and bring it into Sprint. They'll either try to fix it or give you a new phone. I had a replacement phone that night for $0.
You might have to pull the battery a few times, but you still should be able to get into download mode
Sounds like the internal button is either stuck or broken, if you take it to a repair center they might be able to fix it for you. However idk what cost would be if any, I dont keep any for of "insurance" on my phone, if i break it I swap to one of the others I have til I buy a new one. I tend to keep my phones mint and don't want to pay for a refurbished one when i have a bunch laying in a drawer.

I'm on FI27 w/ the newest AGAT kernel but just in case I used Chainfires' Triangle Away to get rid of the yellow triangle at boot. Outside of volume down + power button I don't know another way to get into download mode and since my power button is inop I'm kind of stuck.
Do you know of another way to get back into download mode? I have the self-extracting Odin file for EL29 just waiting to erase all evidence of root.
EDIT: Nevermind. Turns out the button is just stuck. I put the battery back in while holding volume down and it gave me download mode access. That solves one problem, lol.
If your capable, you can crack it open and clean the internal button. If its just sticky that should fix it. While you're in there you can look for actual damage which will tell you to go ahead and take it in for repair.

I wouldn't even begin to know how to do that, though I'm sure YouTube has a couple videos detailing how-to. I'll give it a looksee and if it doesn't scare me away I'll give it a shot. If its something I can do, might as well.
Does it still work now after booting back up? Mine didn't work but for some reason if i hit volume up+power i could get into download mode. But when it was actually booted, it wouldnt work at all, nor would it work inside CWM. Weird thing is when I took it into Sprint the touchscreen started having issues too. So that's probably another reason why I just got a replacement.

It works fine outside of the power button. I have recovery and download mode access, touchscreen is operable and nothing out of the norm seems to be going on. It's disturbing to say the least.
Wtf I got this issue after flashing Fi25 rom? Maybe its a bug? It had been working days before and spontaneously stopped working.

This power button problem just happened to mine friday i took it to a repair store they were rude and refused to fix it told me i needed to use my insurance... so i made a call and within 15 min and only 1 transfer (shockingly) to customer care they sent me out a replacement at no cost i received this afternoon and currently trying to put a custom rom on it.. i had the same issues as you and it was hardware related a smack against a table resolved it atrandom and that phone was also stock..
I have been with sprint nearly 10 years and with several calls to customer care you can get alot done.. if one rep dont help call back and deal with another.. I have been 4 months past due with nearly an $800 bill at one point and still no restrictions i have also have a few older phones and some windows phones replaced at no charge in the past but that took a little more work then this one...Ive was even able to get them to credit my account $300 instead of using my 2 upgrades on phones... just call be polite if that dont work try again with another rep..
btw the sprint store i took it to didnt note it on my account if they tell you you must goto a store kindly refuse saying you dont have time.. if the battle seems endless ask for a supervisor twice..

Read my comment, i need a replacement as well, by lock/power button isnt working either.
I went to my local Sprint store this afternoon and apparently I don't have TEP on my phone. Last month I had an upgrade but I'm happy with my E4GT so I let my wife use it so she could get the EVO LTE. We did this through Best Buy Mobile. My wife has a friend that works there so it's where *she* does all her cellphone business. For some reason my TEP was cancelled on my E4GT upon upgrade and unbeknownst to me for the last month and a half I've had no insurance. :/
I called Sprint customer support and explained what happened and in 3-business days TEP will be reinstated on my phone, no charge, and all will be well in the world. The guy at the Sprint store also said had I had TEP this issue would be fixed via direct-exchange at no-cost to me.
I also tried fixing it myself but I got scared when the couldn't separate the screen from the case and gave up before I borked it.

Help! Phone rebooting frequently/ Power button failure?

Hey everyone, here's what's going on. For the last week or so, I am getting frequent reboots of the phone, here's what I noticed.
Problems:
1) If I plug my phone in to charge and turn the screen on, it goes to the "battery charging" status indicator like I powered off the phone and plugged in it.
2)Mid-operation while running the phone, it will reboot randomly.
3)Occasionally when turning the screen on, it will reboot
4)Occasionally when pushing the power button, I get the shutdown menu like I held the power button down.
5) The power button still works when turning the phone on/ etc (which seems to go against the power button theory)
What I have done so far:
1) Replaced battery (didn't help)
2) Flashed from Jellyverse to stock JB unrooted, formatted everything I could in CM before doing this
The inconsistency in the reboots and the fact that it doesn't always happen with power button makes me think this could be more software issue. My phone is out of warranty. I saw the power button issue thread and while it could be that, I'm not sure. Any thoughts? Does sprint replace the broken power button? If so, is there a way to zero out my flash count before I bring it in on JB? I tried the JIG and it doesn't work anymore, and I am wary of triangle away since it has caused some users problems.
Also, I know about mobiletechvideo's $35 replacement, how long does it usually take to get repaired if I don't do rush shipping?
Double posting isn't going to expedite ypur problem, if anything i could incur the wrath of the moderator.
Anyway judging from all that you have posted in "2" threads, you could be "sol".
You should go to sprint and let them look at it, been out of warranty you don't need to worry about flash counts or root.
If you have insurance or warranty, thats when you worry about root, counts, roms, or whatever else.
I think your out of options at this point.
Sprint could be your friend.
Just come back and let us know the end result. that will make you a contributor  (it may make up for double post).

(UPDATE: Just noticed this was a double-post, and I had already responded to your original post with basically the same info listed below. Guess I'll still leave this reply?)
I had almost the exact same problem with my Epic Touch. (Random reboots every couple of days, which got progrssively worse. Eventually, I noticed that just brushing past the power button would cause the phone to reboot ~10sec later.) It ended up being a bad power button, and replacing it resolved the issue.
How handy are you with a soldering iron? If you're pretty good, you can buy the switch for ~$11 and replace it yourself. (You can also try cleaning it first - several tutorials here at XDA. The Samsung "Captivate" has the same switch and issues. Search both forums)
Several eBay sellers have the switch you'll need.
Some people have also had good luck at the Sprint store, even when their phones were out of warranty. I've heard that they got them fixed or swapped out for $35, since this is a defect, not damage. Definitely worth looking into before you tear your phone apart!
Sprint used to repair phones for $35 even if the warranty had already expired. I don't know if this is still their policy. The $35 repair was for worn out or defective parts, not for physical damage caused by abuse (such as dropping the phone and cracking the screen.)
One man's trash is another man's treasure.
Had a similar issue with my wife's ET4G. Phone would randomly reboot or stop charging due to an issue with the voltage being too high. Ordered a replacement battery, which turned out to be defective. The issue was made worse when I realized the power button wasn't working anymore. Took it to Sprint and they ordered me a replacement, which I picked up today. I've come across some threads where users stated the charging issue was with the initial update to ICS. Also saw where some of the issues were with bulged batteries, so it seems like it could have been any number of things. Picked up an Anker battery off Amazon last week, so hopefully that will alleviate any battery issues in the future.

Thanks for the tips everyone, sorry for the DP. The first post was really about making sure I had done everything to completely wipe software-wise to make sure it wasn't conflicting software/tweaks causing this. Now that I have this figured out, looks like I'll be stopping by my local sprint store. I'll update once I get results. Thanks again!

It is a known Hardware Issue. Here is a link to a Sprint Forum. http://community.sprint.com/baw/thre...art=0&tstart=0
When the radio turns up power to maintain connection with the towers it can cause Electronic Noise to leak over the connection between the capacitive buttons at the bottom of the handset and the main board, making the phone think that there was a key press. This is due to a piece of shielding tape on the device not being up to snuff. The tape can't be replaced on its own in store, the entire screen assembly needs to be replaced.
This issue took quite a bit of time to track down and determine a root cause by Sprint/Samsung because of the large number of devices in the field with varying parts since launch and the multitude of potential causes. It needed to be determined how widespread the issue was, and the different types of hardware affected by this versus other issues with potentially similar symptoms.
The MENU button being "pressed" on its own is considered a known issue and can be fixed in a Service and Repair store by replacing the screen assembly (The replacement parts from Samsung are a combined LCD/TSP assembly from the factory so they are both replaced at once). It does appear more apparent in low signal/roaming environments due to the nature of the issue. If a store does not have parts available or is unable to fix it, they can exchange the device for you. Exchanges will be for the same model refurbished device, just as if you went through Samsung to haev it repaired/replaced. The refurbished devices should have the fixed part in place already from the warehouse. If you do not have TEP/ESRP from Sprint the $50 repair fee is waived for the repair/exchange for this issue. I do not know a specific date that this was posted in the internal device solutions portal, I just checked it today specifically for this issue.
If the phone is determined to have another issue that would preclude the store exchanging or repairing the device (like liquid or physical damage for instance), it will not be repaired/exchanged as that additional issue prevents the store from working on the phone, regardless of other issues.
Hopefully this is a decent enough explanation and recommended course of action. If you have any specific issues or questions with this, send me a PM or post in this thread. I will try to respond as soon as I can. I am a technician in a corporate S&R store, so I cannot be on the Community all of the time as I do work with customers directly here as well

[Q] Should I Return it and Get My Money Back?

I Have had my phone for about two weeks going on three.
I am a new android user
I like and enjoy the phone, but it is starting to act a little wonky earlier in the game.
The screen will become unresponsive at times no matter where you select, whether it be in an app or the slide motion to get to the home screen.
Also, it one day it lagged horrendously, so much so that I had a hard time shutting it down. I had take the battery out.
I don't have insurance on the phone, so I am unsure if I should return it?
Has anyone had ANY of these issues?
Thank you in advance

I Have had my phone for about two weeks going on three.
I am a new android user
I like and enjoy the phone, but it is starting to act a little wonky earlier in the game.
The screen will become unresponsive at times no matter where you select, whether it be in an app or the slide motion to get to the home screen.
Also, it one day it lagged horrendously, so much so that I had a hard time shutting it down. I had take the battery out.
I don't have insurance on the phone, so I am unsure if I should return it?
Has anyone had ANY of these issues?
Thank you in advance

I haven't had any of those issues. I would just exchange it before your 14 days is up. After 14 days, you still have warranty.
Also, do you have any mods installed?
