Gotta question... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So this lovely refurbished phone I recently received from best buy is going completely bat **** insane on me... This has to be the longest I've used it without it acting like I'm touching the screen and making it do just about anything and everything you can imagine...
My question is this... I haven't rooted this phone yet... Mainly because I don't see the point in it if the phone is gonna be acting crazy all the time anyways. Would this problem be hardware related or software related??? Would rooting it actually help it or even make a difference??? Should I just bring it back to best buy and roll the dice on another refurbished phone???
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

If you would be so kind as to explain a little more on the issues, but from what little you've stated sounds more like hardware. Why not just go drop it off at a Sprint store have them look at it and see what they say? if the screen is jumping from one home screen to another, hitting random keys, entering random apps, then its the touchscreen. if nothing of that happens, might just be software glitch. *#*#3424#*#* is a way to test your physical hardware, hit the line drawing test and if it skips any part of the screen it'll be your screen. i would then take it to a sprint S&R store, have them replace the screen and POOF! issue resolved. hope this helps.

So i tried the line drawing test and of course... It passed with flying colors. The jumping from home screen to home screen and hitting random keys and apps is exactly what this phone is doing... but it's kind of intermittent. Like I said the line test went fine, but once it starts goin nuts again, I wont even be able to enter the numbers to get to the line test, let alone take it...

Just take it back and have them order you another one. Refurbs are awful in terms of quality assurance. Back in January, I went through 6 refurbs, ALL of them had some major flaw or something that didnt work. I had to argue with sprint for hours to get them to send me a new one that would actually work.

Run a ruu to reset it first and see if that helps

Oddly enough... The phone has quit acting up. The past two days the phone hasn't givin me one little hiccup. I'm gonna root this ***** tomorrow and see what happens. But thanks for the advice you guys gave to help.

I've had something similar to this happen with mine a few times, but it's never been anything more than a Windows-style 1st troubleshooting step didn't fix. One reboot and it's as good as new. I don't reboot very often though, so I dunno if that's what causes it for me from time to time.
Honestly, if it ever gives you any more trouble again, just walk it right in that store and get yourself a new one...or another used one, whatever the case may be. When you do decide to go root though, make sure you take careful note of what HBOOT you have...

[Q] Strange screen issue

I have been having an issue with my screen. Randomly the screen will become unresponsive. I will be playing a game or something and the screen will not respond to my presses, even the buttons at the bottom dont work. If I hit the power button to turn off the screen and wait a second it will become responsive again. This happens while the phone is in my hands so I dont think it is the grounding issue. The other strange thing is sometimes like if I am typing a text it will start doing things on its own like typing a bunch of random letters and such. Or if I am on the homescreen it will try and resize widgets and slide to the next screen.
Anybody come across this issue or know what I can do to fix it? I am running Cyanogen right now but it happened on Fresh as well all with the stock kernels.
Thanks
Yes, I have that issue as well... When I first got the phone it was a rare occurrence, but over time it seems to have gotten worse and worse. It always seems to be worse if it's plugged into the charger, too.
I decided to do something about it today, so I just flashed the stock (rooted) Sprint OTA on it, and am planning to take it to the Sprint store to see if they will replace it under warranty if I can demonstrate the problem.
I'm heading there now. When I get back, I'll post what they say about it here.
Just got back from the Sprint store...
The technician spent about 20 minutes looking at my phone, then returned it to me saying "You're right, that's pretty annoying." and said that they would replace it under warranty for free. He ordered one and said I could come get it on Monday. I know I'll get a refurbished phone, but I figure a refurbished phone that works is better than a new phone that doesn't.
It would seem that it's a hardware problem, and you'll probably also have to get yours replaced, too.
ah bummer, thanks for posting that at least now I know. I just need to figure out how I can make the issue occur so I dont waste my time at the sprint store.
Just an update, they replaced the phone and I have not seen this issue since. I've nandroided the fresh rom I was using before back onto the phone, so it is definitely a hardware issue. Just take the phone into a service center and get them to exchange it and you should be good.

[Q] First error 67 issues, now my screen is black...Help please

So, my super-fun Sprint day started with me calling tech support earlier, to try and fix the error 67 codes that were constantly popping up on my Evo in the last couple weeks. I never got that fixed, and was going to try updating my phone later.
Now, to the big problem: I was using one of my camera apps(either the stock camera or vignette...can't remember), when my screen went blank. Now, I've had the camera do that, then reboot the phone before, but not like this. The buttons on the bottom are lighted, but the screen itself is black. I've tried pulling the battery, and have done multiple reboots that way, to no avail. It seems to work otherwise...I was able to call it, and answer the call. If I press and hold on the screen over an icon(I have to guess where they are, of course), it makes the vibration that tells you you can move the icon. I even managed to get an app to open once(again, guessing where the icon was). If it helps, I'm running Fresh Evo 3.5.
My first question is, is there any way to fix this? And if not, is there any way to un-root the phone so I can send it in to Sprint for a replacement? I really need to get this fixed ASAP, since my doctors call me at that number. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Is the screen black in recovery?
If you can see your recovery you can try to wipe if that doesn't work try a recovery
I'll try again, but so far I haven't been able to get in there. It's even black when I restart it, i.e. during the HTC and Fresh Rom loading screens.
Earlier in the day, when I was working on the error 67 problem, I updated my vision profile and PRL, then the Sprint tech first refreshed my data from that end, then tried reprovisioning the phone. I don't know if any of that would make a difference, but the phone was turned off and on a lot of times. Also, I had previously had trouble with the camera app, where after taking a picture, it would freeze on a blank screen, then restart the phone.
Thankfully, I still have my Hero, so I'm going to call Sprint and do an ESN swap so I can use that one for now. If worse comes to worst, I'll just buy a new phone, since I have an upgrade on my account, but I'm really hoping I can get the Evo fixed.
If you can get an evo and hold off on the upgrade. The evo 3d should be out by summer

yeah definitly wait for the evo 3d
Sounds like your lcd is dead, if so, theres no way the guys at sprint will be able to see that your rooted. They'll have to ship it off. And you'll get a replacement. Although the fresh boot animation has a noise doesnt it? Anyway to turn that off so the Sprint reps cant hear it if you boot up?
Yeah, the Fresh Roms says "Fresh!" when it's loading. I turned the volume down, so you can't hear that, but if one of the Sprint reps just tried turning the volume up and restarting it, then they would hear it. I don't know how much they look in to these kinds of problems before shipping it off, so maybe I'm just being paranoid. Not to mention all of my data is still on there.
And as much as I was hoping for another answer, I agree - the LCD probably died. I can't even get a replacement right now either - when I was doing the ESN swap, the rep told me they're completely out of the Evo. I'll look in to the Evo 3D, but my boyfriend and I are also just thinking about buying another Evo or the Epic for now, and getting a new LCD later and fixing it ourselves. I get an upgrade every year, so I wouldn't have to wait too terribly long if I decided I wanted the Evo 3D.
And I'm wondering if the error 67 issues are a problem with the tower, because I'm also getting them on my Hero. And, we've had problems with that tower in the past. I'll have to call Sprint tech support back later and see if I can get them to look into it.
Hmmm. Well if LCD is dead I cant help. But if it's not an LCD problem you might want to run an RUU to restore your phone. Also try letting the phone die and rebooting.
How can I run the RUU without being able to see my screen? Might be a dumb question, but I'm still pretty new to rooting.

Sporadic menu capacitive button

at completely random times during the day my menu button would trigger for a good 5 seconds sometimes and then freeze ALL my capacitive buttons. can anyone think of a possible solution?
i'm guessing its a hardware defect but i wouldn't know how to handle sprint if that's the occasion

I had problems with unresponsive capacitive buttons on my og Epic 4G. It was a manufacturing defect and was covered by the manufacturer's warranty. I'd try to bring it back to a Sprint store with a repair facility and make a warranty claim against Samsung.

Mine has JUST started doing that over the past two days... I thought it was due to a Kernel I flashed, or a faulty APK. I ONLY experience the problem while using Handscent.
hmm i see.. well 1) my buttons respond fine its only when the menu button spazzes out that all the buttons freeze which a quick toggle of the power button would fix but i could wait outside a sprint store for it to happen. i would have to return to stock everything right?
2) do individual apks have capability to mess with the buttons outside of an app? i'm pretty sure its occurred throughout multiple apps but ill past more specific attention to when they occur
thanks guys any other input would be appreciated greatly, i do love this phone very much but this glitch is eating away at me

That is the same issue I have; the menu activates, then the entire phone is unresponsive (except the power button, which puts the screen to sleep as it should) for a few seconds.
Although, like I said, I've only noticed it while inside Handscent and trying to enter type a message. I can play games for an hour and never experience it.
It *IS* rather annoying.
I've had this issue for a while and only ever noticed it once I started flashing different ROMs. In my case I can happen in any app (I don't really play games so can't say for sure about that). Email, market, whatever I get it once in a while. Like others said pushing the power button off and on fixes it. If I also wait like 5 secs and don't try to keep pushing buttons it works too.
To those of you having this issue, see if it coincides with going into a low signal area. When I was doing LOS testing in a known dead spot, I noticed this happening as soon as I started getting really low signal. Check that out and please report back. I didn't say anything at the time (it was a while ago now) because I thought I had some user error going on

Man, I am glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. It's the wierdest thing... Eager to find a fix!
i know there was a thread about this months ago but it died because no one had a solution, this time around looks more promising!
the only rom i tend to find myself running is Calk`s and i don't believe i had any issues while i was running miui for a while but eventually i had to go back to calk because i needed 4g but it might just be an issue within the twiz framework or something
John your theory is interesting because i tend to get the issue largely when i'm at home and i have horrible service at home (i'm in the basement) and the past day I've been on the road a lot and ive yet to experience it so you might be on to something, just need some more people to test to confirm

For me, the problem started just over the past two weeks or so. I never had an issue before... Happens when I'm on Wifi as well as off Wifi.
I'm thinking I may just take it in for a warranty exchange. I've begun noticing it occasionally in other applications as well. Not the random menu button activation, but suddenly the capacitive buttons will simply be non responsive for 2 or 3 seconds.

it seems like thats the best way to go about it. frankly, im too lazy to backup all my stuff, unroot, reset the flash counter and then deal with samsung/sprint lol.
results from a couple days testing John's theory: its definitely more noticeable in low service areas and almost nonexistent when the signal is strong (i still get 1 or 2 presses from the menu button then it stops as opposed to several presses then all the buttons freeze). i dont know where to go from here... help

I have been looking at this myself. It only happens to me on the edge of a dead zone. If you have to press the softkeys multiple times in a good signal area, I would take your phone to get checked out. Some OG Epics had this issue too

I agree, but it would be best if you got it fixed by Sprint. Unrooting can be done by closely learning from this video(here, credits to QBKing77).
Mine seems to to it more often in low signal area's or switching back and forth from my airave. Havent really noticed it with full signal or on 4g but only time will tell. No root........

You shouldn't have to send it anywhere. This should fall within the manufacturer's 1 year warranty, which Sprint will honor with a $35 charge... They will (normally) order you a replacement phone and you will swap your old phone when the new one arrives... You shouldn't be without a phone at all.
I'm planning on visiting the Sprint store tonight to start the process, in fact.
After I flash back to stock.

how did it go for you? did you reset your binary counter before you exchanged it?
it sucks that WE pay the $35 charge to replace a hardware defect WE weren't responsible for..
Same thing here.
It's definitely more noticeable in low service areas and almost nonexistent when the signal is strong as has been said before.. Could be in an elevator or basement for example.. The power button solves the issue but the problem usually starts again if the service is still bad.
Just to report...

Please do, and keep us apprised. Iv'e just learned to live with it, but would love to know what's going on.
Just to clear everything up, here's how it works:
You have a Samsung device with a one-year limited warranty. If you'd like, you can send your phone to them for a week, pay for shipping, and maybe get a replacement.
You have a Sprint product. If you'd like, you can take it in for repair (which takes about an hour), and a technician will either fix it - or order you a replacement (which has one-day shipping). If you have Total Equipment Protection, all repairs are free. If you don't, all repairs are $35.
The only time you would have to spend more than that is if you have a phone that is damaged beyond repair (liquid damage, cracked screen, damaged motherboard, etc) - and that would be a deductible of $100 to order a new phone through the insurance company, Assurion.

[Q] Phantom screen presses

Is anyone aware of a fix for phantom touches on the T-Mobile S4 ?
I've been searching the net, and either there aren't any reports of this for the S4 yet, or I'm using the wrong keywords.
On my black S4 I'll get the occasional double letter when typing. I use Thumb Keyboard.
My wife, however, has a white S4 and hers seems to go nuts. She's using the same keyboard, but it still does it with the stock board as well.
It'll register multiples of phantom presses, not all in the same location either.
This was a problem for our Sprint SGSIIs.
Any ideas? Can it be corrected, or does it have to be replaced like the SII?

This sounds like a bad digitizer. Which means hardware failure.
However there are steps to try first to make sure it's not just a correctible software glitch.
If you're only having the problem when using the keyboard that's a very good sign that tells me it could be a software problem. To test that theory go into the settings and find Manage Apps. Then go to the keyboard and clear cache and data. See if that makes it better.
If you have the pahntom touches everywhere you're going to have to take a more "nuclear" approach. If you can back up your user data on the white phoen that is going bonkers, do a full factory reset. See if that fixes it.
If that still fails, you can use Odin to reflash the original stock ROM to teh phone and make it exactly like it came out of the box, even if you've done OTA updates.
That's the most thorough thing you can try without rooting it and installing a custom ROM.
If none of those work, it's a hardware glitch and you'll need a new one.

wiping the keyboard data seems to have helped out
additionally, my wife noticed that when her hands were clean and dry this didn't happen, she uses lotion a lot so when she used it again, the phone started acting up again.

That'll do it. The lotion could be conductive, which will cause multi touches on the digitizer once a lotion layer builds up
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
Wasn't the lotion. There was no lotion on its skin, alas phantom touches again...
My wife could hold the phone in her hand, and watch the keyboard keys register presses.
I called T-Mobile, they said they could replace it with a refurb or they'd called Samsung and get the warranty process started.
I didn't want to replace a brand new phone with a refurb. Samsung provided a 2-day shipping label, it was dropped off at UPS today.
Standard operating procedure: 2 days there, 5-7 business days with a tech, 2 days back to us.
Since we just switched from Sprint to T-Mobile, I don't have any backup phones, so we got a loaner from a T-Mobile retail location.
It's a slider feature phone, wife is none too pleased. Going through Samsung isn't costing us anything other than the $53 deposit on the phone.
We'll see how it goes when the phone makes it back.

[Q] SDS? Hardware or Software Issue?

I am in need of help! My phone is dead. Here's the rundown
AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II (i317)
Used on the Straight Talk Network
Running the latest Unofficial CM12, Lollipop 5.01 for the last week and loved every bit of it. No problems.
I cracked my screen in July and never got it fixed. The cracks spread and I was planning on getting it fixed, but haven't yet. I dropped it two days ago and then the screen wouldn't come back on. The buttons lit up and it would even ring when called. So I thought my screen was finally gone and started looking for a replacement. I took the battery out because I didn't want it ringing without the ability to answer it. Yesterday I put the fully charged battery in and attempted to turn the phone back on. It will not come back on and I think it's more than just the screen now.
Red LED blinks. Half of the screen seems like it is turning on, but then it all goes dark again. Will not enter Download or Recovery. I've been reading and thinking this is more of a hardware issue than software. I've flashed dozens of Roms with only minor issues here and there. I haven't had any issue with Lollipop and can't see it being related, although I could really be wrong.
My question is, is my phone dead? Do I need a new motherboard, along with the screen I was already gonna replace? If that's the case, I will just replace the phone and start over, unless anyone has free parts they want to donate, LOL! Seriously, just looking for input and suggestions.
Thanks

There's pretty much nothing to say, but I guess I will.
You can't get to download mode, can't get to recovery mode, you can't see the screen......
If you're looking for a second opinion to say you're f*cked, then consider this it.
If you could get to download mode or recovery mode, it has a chance. But you still have hardware issues like the screen to replace. Which is not fun.
Possible yes. But unless you really know what you're doing and careful as hell, you take the chance of hosing something else up. Like ripping a ribbon cable or yanking a soldered wire out....
I tried replacing a Motorola Atrix screen. The result of that was me buying an Atrix 2.
Unless you are emotionally attached to this phone, bury it.

I have been flashing Roms since I had a Sprint PPC 6700 and I have enough experience to now I was f#@$ed, but I really needed to hear it from someone else. Someone with developer experience. A screen assembly and motherboard cost more than another phone on ebay or Swappa. Welp, back to the drawing board. Anyone got a note 2 they wanna sell cheap?

No worries.
Feb 3 I'll be on 2 years with my Note 2. Longest I've kept one. Only have one smallish crack on the lower left corner.
With everything I've done to it I'm amazed it's still working.
