I was playing around with my nexus today and I noticed that the stock launcher lags on certain lwp, even with forcing hardware acceleration. I know this has been mentioned a few times, however I was thinking : is it possible that when Google was making ICS they coded the stock launcher to behave properly only Phase Beam only. The say this cause even the Nexus S's lwp even causes lag and that's probably one of the lightest lwp I've seen. Just my opinion, I'd like to see how others weight in.

They probably just didn't bother to optimize the older lwps
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I was also referring to the new lwps too, such as microbes but it's nice to know I'm not alone in my thoughts
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Really? I was running microbes fine.. but that's an older one too
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Is it? LOL
Well I only refereced that one cause I couldn't remember the other ones lol.
I notice lag Bubbles, Halo Spiral, Microbes and Nexus; though only light lag.
The only one that likes to work seems to be Phase Beam.
Too bad cause the others one look really nice too.
Those are all old Leo's...the only new one is pulse...three rest probably haven't been optimized
i've been trying to find info on the lag with lwp's - although I haven't found any answers, I'm glad to know others see the problem.
Something I have noticed that I thought might have an impact on performance:
all the lwp's that have lag are ones that "move" when you switch homescreens. the bubbles fly around, the nexus slides side to side, the microbes move, etc.
phase beam doesn't move when you slide screens. and performance is perfect. that leads me to believe that the lag has something to do with ics moving the lwp while switching home screens.
just a thought...

There was a thread similar to this a little while back, but it died. So what do you use the most? Do you have some cool ones to share? Usually I just check the market for good ones.
Also, so anyone know where I can get the stock samsung galaxy s series lwps? I can seem to find a good link to download them from. And I really want the "ocean" one. Any help would be appreicated!

Almost anything by Kittehface is golden. Here's the ones I use, switching between them depending on the mood:
aniPet Aquarium
Asteroid Belt (Kittehface, really awesome)
Blue Skies (Kittehface, really awesome)
Fireflies (the one with the light bulbs)
Giraffe
Ice Galaxy
Jungle Waterfall (Kittehface)
Rays of Light
Silhouette (Kittehface)
Vortex Galaxy
I'm a big fan of Live wallpaper; it's just something that clearly makes our devices stand out immediately.
i completely agree with you. i like the galaxy ones by that dev, i but it seems to run REALLY slow on my even overclocked G2. depending on the ROM
I use 'Multipicture'. Its not really a 'live' wallpaper, but it acts like one and allows you to set different wallpapers for each screen. Its available for free in the market.
I love solar winds, would live to be able to customize it.
Zoomfield, 3D starfield, plasma.
If there was a waveform mod that allowed you to change the background image and color of the wafeform, I would be very happy in my pants. Does anyone knowbof a music influenced lwp other than waveform and vu meter?
I've been using one called "Shadow Galaxy" made by "maxelus.net" that I found on the Android market. It is one of four Space galaxy wallpapers by maxelus.net. The other three are "Vortex Galaxy", "Ice Galaxy" and "Inferno Galaxy."
All four of the Galaxy wallpapers are free and very nice to look at IMO. Obviously, they use more battery than static wallpapers but I have gotten pretty good battery life while running these. Check them out, they are not my creations but I do enjoy them.
I just installed Night Sky and the Ice and Shadow Galaxy live wallpapers. Shadow Galaxy is my favorite by far. The graphics are stunning!

I love all of these, I switched weekly- thank you for posting this!
Any Idea how to capture the screen?
Edit: nevermind with rooted device there are some apps
I found a new one that's downright incredible: Celestial Bodies. The lite version isn't great imo because it's restricted to one view (the one I dislike), but the full version is fantastic, runs like a dream on this phone and doesn't even show up on my battery stats. There's another amazing one called Solar System 3d that has the best graphics I've ever seen on this thing, but it was showing up as 29% of battery use after 6 hours of being unplugged, so I stopped using it. Not sure if that was a fluke or not but worth noting.

As many of you already know, there is a real issue with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus when it comes to using most live wallpapers on the market: The homescreen transitions become noticeable choppy, and it's just plain sad considering this is the latest Google experience phone.
However, some LWPs like Phase Beam run just fine, even though it's very complex. I read that ICS doesn't support HW acceleration for LWPs.... so till someone, somewhere sorts this out, I want to know: Are there any LWPs that should run as smooth as Photo Beam on my Galaxy Nexus?
Pixel rain runs great.

Galaxy and Phasebeam from aosp do too.
I second pixel rain. Been running that for weeks now an no lag whatsoever.

Wrong. Microbes kills ADW EX just like Nova Launcher. Phase Beam has no impact on either.

Hi,
I recently bought Galaxy Nexus and installed couple of Live Wallpapers.
I noticed extreme lag after setting wallpapers. The transition fps from page to page is drastically dropped.
Live Wallpapers tested with....
1. Fresh Leaves
2. Luma Live wallpaper
3. Deap Sea and Luminous dots (Galaxy S III - Apps downloaded from this forum.)
Does anyone has this problem? Is there any defect on ICS 4.0.4?
same here, seems like phase beam is the only one that's smooth
Why is this in themes and apps and not in questions and answers? This is a question.... and you eve checked the "is this a question" box....

It's a known bug. Phase beam is the only one that is optimized for the Galaxy Nexus.

If you disable wallpaper scrolling it would decrease the lag.. Most Roms have that option.. And launchers.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
It all depends on the live wallpaper. Even stock ones aren't optimized. Confounds me why Google would put live wallpapers on a phone that lag. Anyway look through the market. There are tons of nice ones that have 0 lag and are butter smooth.

Ahmato's suggested solution has been working for me for weeks. Just disable wallpaper scrolling.

I can confirm that turning off wallpaper scrolling makes no noticeable difference.
I really wish that google would address this issue.
I said this before in another thread. What I noticed is that the phone puts the lwp before the launcher. As the launcher lags the lwp stays the same. When comparing to my ns4g I noticed its reversed If the lwp is to much for the phone the lwp lags and not such the launcher.

I can confirm that it does. Holo spiral and nexus revamped has always lagged until I disabled wallpaper scrolling in apex launcher.
For example, phase beam doesn't move around when scrolling, does it?
Not trying to start some pointless argument, just pointing out that it does work for many.

You can accomplish this UI with the current apps on the playstore... Desktop Visualizer, Widget Locker, Multi Live Wallpaper and a little Gimp/Photoshop to make the wallpaper and some time... boom you have a very basic UI I think sharp isn't going to go anywhere with this.
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy Nexus CDMA using xda premium
I don't get why they put icons inside of squares. Its like putting an icon inside an icon which leaves you with a 3 column app tray. Think about all the scrolling you'd have to do.
The lock screen is cool and I'm sure the app store will have something similar soon enough.

its similar, use multi-live-wallpaper and set crop to "Fit to screen" (this is my version of it) if anyone wants it. I personally do not like this UI but I thought i would take a step toward what some ppl want. Ill make the icons 2mrw if you guys want em. https://www.dropbox.com/s/ffkbkwgxqvm681a/FEELUI.rar Enjoy!

this is more than just a home screen transition.
nothing out there (that i have seen at least) gives you vertical scrolling on the home screen as well as horizontal scrolling.
also, the lock screen is more than just a widgetlocker theme. the clock wont be on the bottom, and it wont scroll, the lock screen wallpaper wont scroll, you cant slide the lock icon up, and get the options, you dont get the nicer looking missed call/mail/sms pop ups.
this goes MUCH further than just some skin.
I just read an article about this from The Verge and i'm intrigued. The developers created Next interface and seem to be onto something. They feel the desktop is an unnecessary step to get to the app tray. Fair point, why have a bunch of apps then hit a button to get to your other apps? In the quest to be pc-like, Android has a desktop and widgets. Great, but I do see the point being made here. Oh, and notifications were redesigned.

New launcher is fantastic. I'm using it and its great for people who want a "HUB"-like experience without doing all the work on their N7. So far I'd rank it above next launcher and nova as it combines a lot of features and also hosts quite a bit of other interfaces that are available in the buzz store, which has other people's ideas and designs.
Just thought I'd share this good find with the community.
At least I put this topic in the right section
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
eh, tried it for giggles. Maybe with some work it could be useful but it's mostly just eyecandy and fluff.
And I tried a few homescreens from the Home Buzz or whatever in the app.. Every one I tried you had to set up random stuff to make it work, weather widgets seem to be stuck with a static C or F marker, etc..
Im surprised no one else has chimed in. People usually swarm over newly found launchers lol
It's not really functional. More of just "oh this looks cool" kind of thing right now.

Yea, I realize that now. Jumped the gun a little bit. Went back to apex launcher. Either hit or miss.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
i played around a bit on my N7 (they were not supported 7' tablets, but looks like they start supporting 7 inch tablets). like bearclaw7380 said, it is either hit or miss. It also using more memory than other launchers too, and sometimes it gets really really slow, unresponsive.
Nevertheless, it is cool idea and has good potential, but probably need a lot work to make mainstream launcher.
