[Q] Live Wallpapers that run without killing framerates? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

As many of you already know, there is a real issue with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus when it comes to using most live wallpapers on the market: The homescreen transitions become noticeable choppy, and it's just plain sad considering this is the latest Google experience phone.
However, some LWPs like Phase Beam run just fine, even though it's very complex. I read that ICS doesn't support HW acceleration for LWPs.... so till someone, somewhere sorts this out, I want to know: Are there any LWPs that should run as smooth as Photo Beam on my Galaxy Nexus?

Pixel rain runs great.

Galaxy and Phasebeam from aosp do too.

I second pixel rain. Been running that for weeks now an no lag whatsoever.

Wrong. Microbes kills ADW EX just like Nova Launcher. Phase Beam has no impact on either.

Live Wallpapers

I was playing around with my nexus today and I noticed that the stock launcher lags on certain lwp, even with forcing hardware acceleration. I know this has been mentioned a few times, however I was thinking : is it possible that when Google was making ICS they coded the stock launcher to behave properly only Phase Beam only. The say this cause even the Nexus S's lwp even causes lag and that's probably one of the lightest lwp I've seen. Just my opinion, I'd like to see how others weight in.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
They probably just didn't bother to optimize the older lwps
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I was also referring to the new lwps too, such as microbes but it's nice to know I'm not alone in my thoughts
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Really? I was running microbes fine.. but that's an older one too
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Is it? LOL
Well I only refereced that one cause I couldn't remember the other ones lol.
I notice lag Bubbles, Halo Spiral, Microbes and Nexus; though only light lag.
The only one that likes to work seems to be Phase Beam.
Too bad cause the others one look really nice too.
Those are all old Leo's...the only new one is pulse...three rest probably haven't been optimized
i've been trying to find info on the lag with lwp's - although I haven't found any answers, I'm glad to know others see the problem.
Something I have noticed that I thought might have an impact on performance:
all the lwp's that have lag are ones that "move" when you switch homescreens. the bubbles fly around, the nexus slides side to side, the microbes move, etc.
phase beam doesn't move when you slide screens. and performance is perfect. that leads me to believe that the lag has something to do with ics moving the lwp while switching home screens.
just a thought...

[Q] Extreme lag using Live Wallpapers on Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
I recently bought Galaxy Nexus and installed couple of Live Wallpapers.
I noticed extreme lag after setting wallpapers. The transition fps from page to page is drastically dropped.
Live Wallpapers tested with....
1. Fresh Leaves
2. Luma Live wallpaper
3. Deap Sea and Luminous dots (Galaxy S III - Apps downloaded from this forum.)
Does anyone has this problem? Is there any defect on ICS 4.0.4?
same here, seems like phase beam is the only one that's smooth
Why is this in themes and apps and not in questions and answers? This is a question.... and you eve checked the "is this a question" box....

I was always having that problem too, even in 4.0.2 :/ im android 4.0.4 right now

Those LW are probably not hardware optimized.

Well i got lag even with stock LWs , the only one smooth is Phase Been...

It's a known bug. Phase beam is the only one that is optimized for the Galaxy Nexus.

If you disable wallpaper scrolling it would decrease the lag.. Most Roms have that option.. And launchers.

It all depends on the live wallpaper. Even stock ones aren't optimized. Confounds me why Google would put live wallpapers on a phone that lag. Anyway look through the market. There are tons of nice ones that have 0 lag and are butter smooth.

Rays of light and Vortex galaxy are my 2 favorite.

Ahmato's suggested solution has been working for me for weeks. Just disable wallpaper scrolling.
Sent from the future.
I can confirm that turning off wallpaper scrolling makes no noticeable difference.
I really wish that google would address this issue.
I said this before in another thread. What I noticed is that the phone puts the lwp before the launcher. As the launcher lags the lwp stays the same. When comparing to my ns4g I noticed its reversed If the lwp is to much for the phone the lwp lags and not such the launcher.

Both seem to lag on mine. Even with things turned off...
Edit: dumbed down vortex galaxy enough to make it smooth... I'm loving it.

I can confirm that it does. Holo spiral and nexus revamped has always lagged until I disabled wallpaper scrolling in apex launcher.
For example, phase beam doesn't move around when scrolling, does it?
Not trying to start some pointless argument, just pointing out that it does work for many.

Nova on JB?

Anyone using Nova on JellyBean? Any thoughts as to if it's better, smoother or just preferred? Allows for more flexibility it seems
I'm using Nova on JB. Some widgets like the new Google sound search widget causes it to crash though.
Tried Nova and Apex. For me, lagging slightly. For the first time EVER I'm using the stock launcher. Lacking in options sadly, but I can live with it. Having natively resizable widgets makes it more bearable.

I have been using Nova with Jelly Bean for the past 3-4 days. On of the major reasons is that folders on stock Android max out at 16 app icons. Such is not the case with Nova.
And no, I haven't faced any performance issues, or incompatibility issues, yet.

Been using nova with no complaints. Just as smooth as stock.

I used Nova for a little while, but ended up going back to the stock JB launcher. Nova has some really nice features and customization, but it did not seem as smooth as the stock IMHO.

Odd, its working just fine for me on the Sprint ROM.
I've had nothing but a great experience with it and have been running JB since Thursday.

I am using Nova with no issues.

Are there any custom launchers based on jelly bean yet?

Reason I ask is that the stock jb launcher is way faster and smoother than apex or nova but I can't use the stock launcher right now because I use 240 DPI and want 7x6 grid. The stutter when opening app drawer is unbearable. I tried different kernels and even different Roms same thing.
Anything available yet or should I just go back to stock density.

Why not? I bought a nexus so I could implement mods like this. I think the stock density is a waste of the huge display.

I'm using Apex Launcher that you mentioned and I do not notice any difference in smoothness.

You don't get or stutters when opening the app drawer?

Dunno about Apex launcher but with Nova reportedly* you'll get smoothness if you go in to the animation speed options and select stock speed.
(* not my tip - I've always stuck with stock speed on Nova is working fine for me on JB)
I am using the paid version of Nova, which was updated yesterday to support JB animations and it is nothing but butter.
I am stock no root.

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I still can't quite work out if I find Apex or Nova as smooth as stock, and can thus switch back to them and get customising.
There'a a mod in the themes section. I havent tried it, but it might be worth a look.

That's because stock launcher has nothing in it compared to Apex. I've run 3 JB roms now with apex launcher and Franco kernel. Fast as fast can be. I have to say I am quite disappointed in JB though, I find there is not much to their update.

Tried Nova Prime on a couple of JB roms, set to fast (2above stock) smoooooth transition. Ive never had issues with Nova on GNEX.

I found a REAL solution, this is built from the jelly bean launcher source code and also works on ICS, search for holo launcher hd beta.

Another reason to like the stock JB launcher is the fling to remove apps. Now that should be implemented into every launcher.

Launchers and themes

What does everyone use for launchers? Any one have a good minimalistic theme? I'm running xylon11
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
Only "stock" launcher I use on GNex
I really really like nova. I know some have mixed opinions about it but it serves Me well. Also I just started making custom wallpapers for xylon . I go pretty minimal. One screen and folders with circle click widget and Bob click and nice wallpaper. That's about all I can say on that topic.

I use Nova Launcher Prime. the customization level is very high and I like a lot the gesture function toghether with the ROM actions ..
Maybe the negative thing is the ram occupation.
I'm using silky smooth Xperia launcher. But usually ADW Ex. It is amazing. He just updated maybe 2 months ago. Very tablety.
