[Q] Update Unbranded DHD to 2.3.5 - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I wonder if I could get a little help? I am reading around the forum and am a little overcome with all of the information - not too mention Android jargon. There is a lot I don't understand and so am forced to ask.
Simple really; I have a Desire HD and it is unbranded. A friend of mine rooted the phone when it had Orange splash screen etc, and is now running 2.3.3 with sense 2.1 on a Vodafone contract.
I would like to install 2.3.5 with sense 3.0 but am baffled trying to even find it. Htc customer service said I would have to reinstall the Orange ROM to get an OTA update, which is the last thing I want to do. Can anybody point me at this update or help at all?
Forgive me being a bit of a noob, but I am sure we all were at some point.
All advice and guidance gratefully accepted

I'd like to inform you, that Android 2.2 software is not available with us. However, if you've been promised while upgrading your contract to HTC Desire phone. I'd request you to please visit the O2 store, wherein you had upgraded your contract. They'll be in a better position to help you in this matter.
I appreciate your patience in this matter and hope things get sorted for you soon. If you need any further help, feel free to contact us or visit our online Help Centre

Try UnrEVOked. If it works you can then just flash a pre-rooted Froyo.

Hu now ive just read -
An O2 spokesman told techradar.com: "We're working with HTC to bring the latest version of Android 2.2 Froyo to our HTC Desire customers as soon as possible. We expect this to take several weeks and we will update our customers once the new software is available."
Dont know what to believe DAMN
Sounds like a badly-informed customer service guy to me.
Dude don't worry, 2.2 will come to o2. Most people working for these mobile phone companies don't know anything that isn't on a script. In my experience its not even worth asking, they didn't even know what the Desire was a few days before its release.

[Q] New Desire user needs help please

Hi All
This is my first visit for years since owning an original XDA so I am not up to speed and would appreciate some expert guidance if you would be so kind.
I have just bought an HTC Desire and have several questions :-
a) it is an Orange branded HTC Desire bought of eBay which I have now unlocked but it still has all of the horrible Orange branding. I am running the current great Tesco deal (£10 pm, 500 any minutes, unlimited internet (500mb AU) so running costs will be low
I still have access to an Orange PAYG sim
Question : Can I use (Insert) the Orange SIM when (if ) Orange roll out their OTA update to Froyo to update the handset ???;
b) Question : Do Tesco operate any OTA updates and , if so, will they ignore my "Orange" HTC ?
c) Can I debrand the Orange and, if so, can I then use any HTC OTA updates ?
d) If I can do c) above, how would I go about getting the HTC update;
e) If I debrand and root the HTC, presumably it can no longer update via OTC so how would I then perform future updates:
f) I have great admiration for the makers of the various custom roms currently out for Froyo but really worried about bricking the phone so I am really regarding flashing the firmware as a last resort - if I do have to bite this bullet, can someone point me to the best "idiots guide" ?
Really sorry for the barrage of questions but I would appreciate any guidance you can give
Thanks to you all
Hi freebooter,
I have answered each of your questions below.
Question : Can I use (Insert) the Orange SIM when (if ) Orange roll out their OTA update to Froyo to update the handset ?
You shouldn't need to, the phone will look for the updates, not the sim card. When Orange release their update, it won't matter what SIM you are using.
b) Question : Do Tesco operate any OTA updates and , if so, will they ignore my "Orange" HTC ?
It will be Orange who supply your update, unless you debrand and flash a HTC or custom ROM.
c) Can I debrand the Orange and, if so, can I then use any HTC OTA updates ?
Yes, look in the development forum, and read the first few sticky posts.
d) If I can do c) above, how would I go about getting the HTC update;
The phone would notify you
e) If I debrand and root the HTC, presumably it can no longer update via OTC so how would I then perform future updates:
If you do that, you won't get the Orange update, but you should get the htc ones. Bear in kind some networks may not honourhonour your warranty if you debrand/flash a new ROM.
f) I have great admiration for the makers of the various custom roms currently out for Froyo but really worried about bricking the phone so I am really regarding flashing the firmware as a last resort - if I do have to bite this bullet, can someone point me to the best "idiots guide" ?
Again, look say the first few posts in the development forum....
I hope the answers help, please feel free to ask more if you are unsure.
Zippyioa
Thanks Zippyioa - your reply is very helpful and has given me more confidence to try to get rid of the Orange bloatware
I am still a little confused about the huge range of roms available to download and a bit nervous about trying a customsied rom so can you recommend a good up to date rom that will put me on the HTC OTA upgrade path ?
(By the way, how are things in Stratford ? I used to live just up the road in Hockley Heath)
You won't need to root if you want to intend your desire. You just need need to create a goldcard. Guides in the developers forum. You then find the unbranded ruu. Further guides are in the development section.

Sorry to be thick but you said "you want to intend your desire" which I don't understand
Do you mean I only need a gold card to flash a stock rom over the Orange one ?
I will read the stickies (and try to make sense of them but I am very out of touch - my last custom rom was for an original XDA !!!)
One other point, having bought and used an unlock code for my Orange handset, presumably the same code number will work if the hnadset locks up again ?
Thanks

Stratford is great, strangely we were just in Solihull so went through hockley heath to get there!
I think the last poster meant debrand not intend? Anyway, you are right about the goldcard, just make sure you put it in again if you do an OTA upgrade!
As for the unlock code, once you apply it Oranges sim lock is removed.it shouldn't come back but I would keep it just in case.
You also asked me which ROM I would suggest, I haven't tried any as I am still using the stock T-Mobile one, but Paul at MoDaCo has always made first class roms and you can choose the contents yourself in his kitchen
zippyioa
Sorry yes I meant debrand (I'm trying to use swype ) you will need a spare micro sd card for a gold card as when some ota updates arrive they will not be accepted unless you have a gold card. The unbranded rom will be instead of the orange rom. If you ever need to put the orange rom back on the phone you won't be able to as the orange ruu hasn't been leaked so keep that in mind.

Thanks for the responses
As I am not on Orange as service provider , what I really want to do is to get to as pure an HTC unbranded state in the hope that I will be able to get HTC OTA updates for Froyo and subsequents.
To be honest, custom roms are a bit scary at my level of knowledge as I don't want to brick an expensive handset (no disrespect to the clever guys who are cooking this stuff in their kitchens) so I will be looking for the most up to date HTC roms I can source.
One thing I can't figure is how HTC OTAs work as I would have thought that the service providers pump their updates out across their networks so how do unbranded handsets get updated ?
The way I understand it, it is the handset that looks for updates, based on the rom you have installed.
I currently have a t-mobile handset with a vodafone sim. I just got the t-mobile update as that is what the phone had installed on it.
zippyioa
Thanks zippyioa
So to get an update from Orange, I would have to leave it as Orange branded but , as I don't like the Orange customisations anyway, I would have to debrand it after their Froyo release ?
As this would still involve flashing a non Orange rom, am I right in thinking that I might as well find (if available) a current HTC Froyo rom and flash to that now ?
If I understand correctly, there is no benefit in waiting for Orange or am I utterly confused ?
Does anyone with an unbranded have an experience of an OTA HTC upgrade ?
Thanks
That's the way I understand it!
The only downside to debranding is that the operator warranty is usually void. I am not sure if HTC still cover it though?
The warranty isnt covered I dont think but you can check. An advantage to unbranding is that you will receive ota updates sooner and you won't have all the orange bloatware installed.

[Q] Download Froyo 2.2

Hi All,
Please bear with me - I'm a late Desire joiner.
I've been reading the Froyo update threads but haven't found an answer.
Phone is UAE version, Arabic and English, and has ROM v 2.1xx on it.
The updater says there is no update.
How can I download the stock HTC 2.2 ROM, please?
All help much appreciated.
OK - I've been to the HTC website and 2.2 is not available for my phone - I guess that this is because they haven't got around to the Arabic yet!
So, I'd like to install a UK English version of 2.2 - where can I get it?
Check you screen
Hi,
Im a fellow newbie HTC Desire user. I just rooted my Desire now running on custom ROM. I think you need to check first if you have SLCD or AMOLED screen. Most RUUs are not compatible with SLCD Desire phone.
You can re-direct to Informative Threads, Links & Info - READ THIS FIRST ! thread and refer to [ROM] Official HTC Desire RUU ROMS and OTA Update URLs.
Hope this helps.
Many thanks.
I've installed roms before on my WinMo phones quite happily.
But, this time I'd like to stay with the stock rom from HTC, so I just want to upgrade to 2.2 for the improved functionality ........ I think I need to fool HTC into thinking that the phone is in the UK and it will upgrade OTA?
Hmmm ..... whwre to download the official HTC Froyo?
all RUUs in the link are authenticated by HTC = not custom ROM. Just download the RUU for your region and then upgrade to 2.2 via OTA. Just confirm first that you have AMOLED screen. As i said, most RUUs are not compatible with SLCD screens.
Right, thanks, I'm beginning to understand.
How can I tell if my phone has the amoled screen?
Thanks for your patience!
np
Just a heads up, it might take a while installing ROM on your Desire (30 minutes or so) so dont panic if you see the HTC logo with white background for a while.
OK, I'm getting closer to doing it - maybe at the weekend.
How do I know which type of screen it has?
Hi,
You can follow the procedure in one of the threads here. Also, normally, most phones sold after Aug 2010 are all SLCD screens.
However, I advise you to just sent an email to HTC Customer Service to be 100% sure (this is what i did).
I do believe that if you are upgrading to Froyo then screen type doesn't matter because it has both sets of drivers anyway. Also I think there is a list of official download find in the developers section of this site.;0-)

[Q] Reinstalling Android 2.2 on HTC Desire HD

Hello guys! I am Nukers90 and I am completely new to Android (just got my HTC Desire HD with Android 2.2).
I have a little question for you and I hope that you can help me in a way or another. I bought my phone over the internet and it actually is the Asian version. It has the Asian version of Android 2.2 on it, I think (at languages, I only have English(Singapore), English(Malayesia), English(Vietnam), etc.). The MENU and everything are in English, but I would like to reinstall the OS (Android 2.2 Froyo) and get an International Version on my phone (with languages like French, English(US/UK), etc.). Can I do this? Can you guys help me? I know that I might have to "erase" all the data on the phone right now, but I don't care, because it's actually brand new (I just downloaded 2 apps to test it out...).
Also, if it would be possible, I would also want to ROOT and put the Android 2.2 on my phone. (I think that I can also root the phone since I want to reinstall the OS... but you should tell me better what to do :s).
Please help me with this... I am willing to follow any constructive directions
Thank you so much guys,
Nukers90

[Q] Root and install CWM for a 2nd hand DHD

Hi guys
I recently brought a 2nd hand HTC Desire HD
This rom is totally stock, to be precise, it is a Hong Kong version 2.3.5, HTC sense 3.0, software number 3.13.832.4,
Since I want to improve the battery life and have a more defined rom.
I would like to root and install CWM for my DHD.
Up to now, I understand that I probably need to downgrade my DHD (using ACE hack kit), since it has a sense 3.0 aka gingerbread rom.
But because of my DHD is 2nd hand, i don't know much history about it.
i can not know for sure, that this DHD is shipped with GB at the first place?
Or the last guy actually upgrade it from a froyo.
My research in this forum tells me these 2 things are different, and because of this i should also use different approach
I would like to find the confirmation from you guys
Thx in advance!!

You don't care what your phone was shipped with but what running now. Just to avoid messing things up treat your phone as shipped with GB. The Hack Kit is the only tool in town to gain S-OFF and root, and does not use froyo RUU's.
For further information, just use the guide in my signature...:good:
Go on without a fear... free your DHD... :good:
