Hi guys,
Just got a shiny new Touch Pro2 from Vodafone UK and really liking it! Only thing is I really dont like the Vodafone theme and everything, and would love to have the original HTC software on. Few questions:
Is this possible?
Will it affect anything?
Will it allow me to do any hotfixes/updates that HTC release without having to wait for Vodafone to release their custom fw?
Has anyone with a Vodafone TP2 done it and got any advice?
Thanks guys.

yes. you first have to install hardspl. hardspl is a software that after being flashed onto your phone making it accepting any firmware (including self-made).

yes. no need to wait. anyways, if you are looking for cutting edge firmware you probably want to try the roms (firmware) that have been created by forum members.
Thanks for the reply!
Not bothered about affecting warranty as from what I gather it only affects the warranty with Vodafone, but the HTC warranty will still remain.
Will read up on hardspl then and see what I can do.
Any advice from any Voda customers who have done this would be good
Thanks again
I have a Vodafone TP2, and installed HSPL as soon as I could to get rid of that awful red theme vodafone though was a good idea! I've tried various different ROMS with no issues, so go ahead and do it. Turning the phone on and not seeing that horrible red clock was great the first time I did it!!
Hi there,
Also a Vodafone TP2 user. I've flashed HardPL and Energy's Warhawk Rom and its amazing!!!
Waiting for the Genesis version to be a little more stable then will upgrade to that.
Only Issue I have is I can't yet find a way to get rid of the Vodafone screen that pops up on first turning the phone on. (Boot Splash screen).
Have a good read of the HardSPL thread, Flashing your first Rom and then have a go.
If you are in any doubt go back and read it again.
Good luck and enjoy!
Hi All
This is my first visit for years since owning an original XDA so I am not up to speed and would appreciate some expert guidance if you would be so kind.
I have just bought an HTC Desire and have several questions :-
a) it is an Orange branded HTC Desire bought of eBay which I have now unlocked but it still has all of the horrible Orange branding. I am running the current great Tesco deal (£10 pm, 500 any minutes, unlimited internet (500mb AU) so running costs will be low
I still have access to an Orange PAYG sim
Question : Can I use (Insert) the Orange SIM when (if ) Orange roll out their OTA update to Froyo to update the handset ???;
b) Question : Do Tesco operate any OTA updates and , if so, will they ignore my "Orange" HTC ?
c) Can I debrand the Orange and, if so, can I then use any HTC OTA updates ?
d) If I can do c) above, how would I go about getting the HTC update;
e) If I debrand and root the HTC, presumably it can no longer update via OTC so how would I then perform future updates:
f) I have great admiration for the makers of the various custom roms currently out for Froyo but really worried about bricking the phone so I am really regarding flashing the firmware as a last resort - if I do have to bite this bullet, can someone point me to the best "idiots guide" ?
Really sorry for the barrage of questions but I would appreciate any guidance you can give
Thanks to you all
Hi freebooter,
I have answered each of your questions below.
Question : Can I use (Insert) the Orange SIM when (if ) Orange roll out their OTA update to Froyo to update the handset ?
You shouldn't need to, the phone will look for the updates, not the sim card. When Orange release their update, it won't matter what SIM you are using.
b) Question : Do Tesco operate any OTA updates and , if so, will they ignore my "Orange" HTC ?
It will be Orange who supply your update, unless you debrand and flash a HTC or custom ROM.
c) Can I debrand the Orange and, if so, can I then use any HTC OTA updates ?
Yes, look in the development forum, and read the first few sticky posts.
d) If I can do c) above, how would I go about getting the HTC update;
The phone would notify you
e) If I debrand and root the HTC, presumably it can no longer update via OTC so how would I then perform future updates:
If you do that, you won't get the Orange update, but you should get the htc ones. Bear in kind some networks may not honourhonour your warranty if you debrand/flash a new ROM.
f) I have great admiration for the makers of the various custom roms currently out for Froyo but really worried about bricking the phone so I am really regarding flashing the firmware as a last resort - if I do have to bite this bullet, can someone point me to the best "idiots guide" ?
Again, look say the first few posts in the development forum....
I hope the answers help, please feel free to ask more if you are unsure.
Zippyioa
Thanks Zippyioa - your reply is very helpful and has given me more confidence to try to get rid of the Orange bloatware
I am still a little confused about the huge range of roms available to download and a bit nervous about trying a customsied rom so can you recommend a good up to date rom that will put me on the HTC OTA upgrade path ?
(By the way, how are things in Stratford ? I used to live just up the road in Hockley Heath)
You won't need to root if you want to intend your desire. You just need need to create a goldcard. Guides in the developers forum. You then find the unbranded ruu. Further guides are in the development section.

Sorry to be thick but you said "you want to intend your desire" which I don't understand
Do you mean I only need a gold card to flash a stock rom over the Orange one ?
I will read the stickies (and try to make sense of them but I am very out of touch - my last custom rom was for an original XDA !!!)
One other point, having bought and used an unlock code for my Orange handset, presumably the same code number will work if the hnadset locks up again ?
Thanks

Stratford is great, strangely we were just in Solihull so went through hockley heath to get there!
I think the last poster meant debrand not intend? Anyway, you are right about the goldcard, just make sure you put it in again if you do an OTA upgrade!
As for the unlock code, once you apply it Oranges sim lock is removed.it shouldn't come back but I would keep it just in case.
You also asked me which ROM I would suggest, I haven't tried any as I am still using the stock T-Mobile one, but Paul at MoDaCo has always made first class roms and you can choose the contents yourself in his kitchen
zippyioa
Sorry yes I meant debrand (I'm trying to use swype ) you will need a spare micro sd card for a gold card as when some ota updates arrive they will not be accepted unless you have a gold card. The unbranded rom will be instead of the orange rom. If you ever need to put the orange rom back on the phone you won't be able to as the orange ruu hasn't been leaked so keep that in mind.

Thanks for the responses
As I am not on Orange as service provider , what I really want to do is to get to as pure an HTC unbranded state in the hope that I will be able to get HTC OTA updates for Froyo and subsequents.
To be honest, custom roms are a bit scary at my level of knowledge as I don't want to brick an expensive handset (no disrespect to the clever guys who are cooking this stuff in their kitchens) so I will be looking for the most up to date HTC roms I can source.
One thing I can't figure is how HTC OTAs work as I would have thought that the service providers pump their updates out across their networks so how do unbranded handsets get updated ?
The way I understand it, it is the handset that looks for updates, based on the rom you have installed.
I currently have a t-mobile handset with a vodafone sim. I just got the t-mobile update as that is what the phone had installed on it.
zippyioa
Thanks zippyioa
So to get an update from Orange, I would have to leave it as Orange branded but , as I don't like the Orange customisations anyway, I would have to debrand it after their Froyo release ?
As this would still involve flashing a non Orange rom, am I right in thinking that I might as well find (if available) a current HTC Froyo rom and flash to that now ?
If I understand correctly, there is no benefit in waiting for Orange or am I utterly confused ?
Does anyone with an unbranded have an experience of an OTA HTC upgrade ?
Thanks
That's the way I understand it!
The only downside to debranding is that the operator warranty is usually void. I am not sure if HTC still cover it though?
The warranty isnt covered I dont think but you can check. An advantage to unbranding is that you will receive ota updates sooner and you won't have all the orange bloatware installed.

guess so, that's the newest version I have seen so far on the Internet.
But I did root, S-Off and flashed Overclock modules before doing a system backup.
don't know that if I dump my ROM , will it still be same as the original

Speaking of, I need the 1.34.707.5 RUU that came with my phone. This version is kinda sluggish. Slower than my desire. wish i didn't try to hack it without a ruu to fall back on.

Might be worth asking HTC for one ? I don't see why they shouldn't give it to you. No harm in trying, anyway.

I'm pretty sure that's where all the RUUs originate from. Maybe tell them your phone was acting kinda weird and you tried a "return to stock" but that wouldn't work, so you want to try flashing the ROM again to see if that helps rather than sending it back ?
You can open a support call via email on their website. You have to supply a serial number, so they probably won't ask too many questions and might even just give you an RUU.
Work asking, anyway ? Maybe someone else can think of a better story, that was just off the top of my head.
I'm ****ed. Of course I didnt tell them I flashed an older ruu rom.Their reply is:
Thank you for contacting HTC. With reference to your query, we are sorry to inform you that the ROM on your unit is up to date and currently there is no RUU. I have got an idea. Tell them you are running a old version(you get this phone from your friend, and you didn't know where it's from), like 1.34.4xx.x
and ask for 1.34.708.5 or newer
see how they reply

hope we can get 1.34.708.5 or newer

What problem are you having exactly ? I would use the method described in http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=832503
hi guys I bought my DHD last month form Amazon.UK and im using it here in Middle-east .the phone has never being used in UK. All of my friends got the update but not just me why? is it because im here in KSA and the phone I bought is form UK? why i'm saying all this is because the HTC customer service said ,
''Thank you for contacting our Customer Support Center. With regards to your inquiry, all the updates that you will receive it on your device OS it will refer back to the UK region because your device is from UK. Thank you once again for your continued patronage.''
what dose it mean that I will never gona get any update like not 2.3 or not even 2.2.1. well finally what I was thinking of now, is it possible if I insert my UK sim card in the phone so it might give update idk i have to look for some UK sims then.
Same here..My DHD is too from UK
I haven't received any of the updates either
My brother and my friends already updated to 1.83.415.6 and im still stuck with the 1.32.405.6
Dude, 1.83.415.6 is an OTA for Middle-Eastern phones (containing Arabic support), so you won't get it if your phone is a UK unit.
Actually my brother and me bought the unit together and he had the same system software as mine but he got an update and the update is not actually for arabic support only...It improves the performance and the battery life
Just root guys then you will have all the updates you want.
-----
Someone Swyped my idea.
as for now, HTC dont have any upgrade for desire HD yet. the last update (ver 2.2.1) also has been reverted because of several issues. So stock Desire HD wont receive any update (up to now).
but, if you still want the update, you can flash your rom.
What do you mean by just root and you will get all the updates??..

Root is an way to gain more control over your phone. You will get to play around with your /system and many other goodies like OC/UV. Search around in the forum and you will find complete guide to root your DHD and then you will be able to flash custom ROMs that are based on the latest RUU from HTC.
To root your phone, download visionary+ and follow the guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837519
To ENG S-OFF your phone easily, follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
To flash a new radio: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=896597
Check the version of the Stock ROM on your DHD prior to getting started.
Mate i knew that before too and thanks for trying to help me but i was asking does rooting , s-off affect the OTA updates?
You will loose OTA but the developers on here include all the best bits from OTA updates in their custom ROMs anyway, so you will always be up to date, except a custom ROM will work so much better than stock.... faster, smoother, more stable, bettery battery life etc etc.
As you said you will loose OTA updates but once you revert back to the original stock rom then will you be able to get the OTAs or not?
Yeah, if you flash official again you'll get OTA back... but there's absolutely nothing to gain from OTA updates compared to using a custom ROM.
Seriously, the developers here are a lot better at fixing bugs and problems than the "developers" working for HTC!
where can we get the official roms...its too long that i havent received any updates..maybe if i reflash with a official rom i get updates...
actually i dont want to void my warranty by flashing custom roms
Have a look in the Desire HD Development section, there should be links there.
With custom you only loose warranty until you flash official again, then you have warranty again
Thanks mate, you were really helpful
And do you know from which server does the DHD checks for the updates?
Will I never gona learn English

You are asking details that are not useful in anyway (ofc you can have all your interests to know it )....Like it has been said, don´t worry about OTA and stuffs...keep on visiting XDA and go on with one of the custom ROMs (best imo at the moment is ARHD2.0.9) you ll never miss HTCs ROM...

Yeah, I'm aware that the update (which is 37Mb or so) contains more than just Arabic language support, but what I'm saying is that the update was specifically rolled out for Arabic-locale phones.
My understanding is that it's the equivalent of the 1.72blahblahetc update for other phones.

Hi there XDA, I've asked a similar question to this before, however since then some things have changed and it's got me wondering, what the hell is going on over at HTC with these software build numbers?
I recently aquired a replacement phone from Orange UK for a Desire HD. The software version on the phone I sent to them was 1.32, however the phone I recieved was running a software version of 1.72, I know for a fact that when I sent that phone to them, there were no updates available, and the thing is, it's a door to door thing. Both handsets are exactly the same, they are both de-branded yet have an Orange logo on the back.
It's sorta fustrating because I know that one of these builds i clearly the one I should have, but I don't know which is which, would someone be kind enough to explain and point me in the right direction of the ROM i should flash? Thanks, and btw im in the UK.

If you want to root etc it would be easier on the 1.32 version but is still easy to do on the 1.72 version, you just use a different approach.
All the answers you need are in the development forum. Don't need to put a link here for you, it's not hard to find. Alternatively, use the link in my sig.
What ROM you SHOULD flash is up to YOU. YOU decide what one YOU like the most.

Your in luck, if you do not want to root, and have a unbranded handset you can have official HTC Gingerbread. An HTC RUU with the upcoming 2.3 release was leaked.
Check THIS thread and download the RUU.exe
