Nokia just gave 25k Lumia 800's to registered developers with them, ordered mine last night. I imagine some of the people here in the running would have been registered?

Guys, if you weren't registered as a Nokia developer before October 26th, forget about it. That is one of the requirements to receive a free phone.

Status is still the same, I sent the DDP an email earlier today so I'll let you know what they say if there has been a delay or something.
Also to those interested in joining their program the link is here: https://www.developer.nokia.com/Developer_Programs/Launchpad.xhtml
As a member of Nokia Developer Launchpad, you will receive additional benefits like:
Early and exclusive access to e.g. technical information and materials on upcoming technologies.
Two free technical support cases pushed to your account when the membership is activated.
Company members have access to the Device Distribution to purchase Nokia devices at discount for development and testing purposes.
Get invited to key regional and global Nokia events and trainings.

Keep in mind for this specific give away you had to be registered since at least May to be eligible. I personally joined as soon as I saw the announcement MS scooped them up and they were going WP7.

Got a response from DDP earlier today:
thanks for your email.
Please note the delivery time is estimated to be around two weeks at the moment.
We have huge number of orders to process and this is the time of public holidays too.
Please be patient, you will be notified once the device is ready to dispatch.

Looks like we wont have to wait much longer than that.
Just a quick word. people that order the free devices are supposed to give it proper use. Specifically, this particular program is aimed at giving Nokia developers the opportunity to migrate of create new apps for Windows Phone.
If you are not interested to keep the device and do just that, then you are basically taking advantage of a situation that can create a precedence to the point that Nokia may stop making such offerings in the future. I'm not an affiliate from Nokia or work for them btw.
The best way to show Nokia that it is good investment to continue to deliver free or discounted devices to developers is to actually do what you have set to do when you pressed the order button.
Also you should check if you are not in violation of your agreement when you ordered the device. I dont have any idea if its allowed or not to resell the device. I would be surprised if it is.
My 2 cents.

I know people have posted that they want to buy them, I don't know if anyone talked about selling theirs(from the program). I personally am signed up as a developer because I am, and that is just what this phone is going to be used for. I am developing cross-platform applications to broaden my targetable client base so getting a free phone to test on is a god send because I don't actually have the funds to purchase my own.
In any case I do agree with what you said.

When Microsoft handed me and Lumia 800 "for free" they basically wrote on the contract: "loan for 2 years" and that it shall be returned after that which would prevent me from selling it if I ever wanted. Probably something similar for you guys.
Like you said as well; Nokia is showing a lot of good-will and wants to get WP7 off the ground so it would be sad if some of the "devs" would try abusing it.

Didn't realize nokia had a contract with the devs in order to receive the free phone. Are there NDA's involved too ? Is a credit card involed or is this tied to the devs payout account from the market (app sales) in any way ?

Honestly I have no clue, I got my phone through a Microsoft programme as part of a deal that whomever managed to get 3 certified apps on the market within a month were to recieve a new Lumia 800. I had to sign a 2-paged contract and the relevant point in it was that you "borrowed it" and wasn't allowed to sell it on.
Nokia might want to protect themselves as well and not just giving out free money to some people, one way is to have a contract that screws over any dev if they sell it.
Just a quick reminder to everyone, any transactions that take place through XDA must happen in the Marketplace forum in a Public thread. This is one thing that is strictly enforced and is for the protection of both parties, as well as XDA.
Please read the Marketplace Rules and then check out the XDA Marketplace if you are looking to buy or sell a device.
Has anyone else that was in on this gotten theirs shipped yet? It's been a little over 2 weeks since they told me 2 weeks but still sitting at 'new order'.
Looks like I spoke too soon! just got my shipping notification, its being sent from TURKU - FINLAND. On another note I looked over the agreement for getting the phone and it looks as if it is treated just as I purchased the phone myself so resale is ok, I still however plan to use the phone for dev.

First CTIA announcement was delayed, then later an announcement without carriers or release dates. Two weeks later and till no US carrier release information. Seems odd considering the other recent "super phone" announcements came with carrier information, release dates, and pricing. Also the usual parties have not received production review units which I'd expect by now.
Even announcing puts the brakes on product purchases of competing models. Look how many people withheld purchases of smart phones the entire quarter prior to an expected iPhone release. Why announce and hold if reducing product competition was the goal?
The only thing I can think of is to steal some of Apple's iOS 5 thunder. Show that Google's Android 4.0 is moving forward too even if it's not really ready.

Even I felt it was odd that there is no official US release announcement yet. I just hope the unlocked GSM model gets released this month. I don't mind paying the full price.
I have to admit I would not have been this anxious if I did not loose my Nexus One . It's hard to survive with a 5 year old phone.

Well, Verizon did say we're getting the Galaxy Nexus "later this year"... But that's about the only US release information to date.
US carriers just released the old galaxy S II. They want to actually sell some and not have everyone wait 45 days for the newer / better device.
I think its slightly unnerving that theres quite a bit of silence from Google when they've already announced a date for Europe.
I think its because they're trying to work with carriers this time. Whereas with the Nexus S they clearly didn't try that hard. Part of that is pretty much requiring that they get VZW (thats why they made the LTE version), and the other part is trying to push it to more carriers too.
We'll see. I'm not "worried" about it, just curious.
If by next week we still don't have the LTE version labels released by the FCC, then something is curious.

If that is the reason then why announce in the first place. By announcing they are in fact causing a lot of people to wait and not buy the Galaxy S2, myself included.

Normal people don't do this. Only nerds do. You're way off base if you think any normal person knows what a "Nexus" phone is, or cares enough to hold off buying a new phone when they're ready to make a purchase.

You're not alone mate. Here in Europe we have a date but what does it mean? Is it just for the 16 GB version? If yes when does the 32GB arrive? Not a single shop here has a confirmed date when it is in store so we're in the same situation. We can just wait and search the web for infos.

Indeed. I'm constantly looking for information about the 32 GB version as I really need the space and I find it frustrating that there is no information about it. I even asked Samsung Sweden about it and they have yet to reply. They did reply to my other questions I asked them earlier about the GN but not this.
It's pathetic. Google and Samsung screwed up a chance to take the spotlight from 4s.
Carriers ***** slapped both if them and they complied.
Nothing short of bad management to have ZERO information or street dates this far after announcement. The *few weeks* bull**** stopped being believable after gingerbread.
Agreed. I'm not going to reopen any old wounds, because they might be egocentric as another member or two posted, but this is not how you do it.
I just keep looking at that original Nexus One launch and hang my head. If those people involved could only see to now? Dear god they'd be ashamed, I would think.
The more frustrating thing is Google really is so big, the only other people that can bull them into releasing info are more corrupt and more interest centric than Google itself. The actual people that will use the device day in and out, I feel there is no one to speak for our interests.
It would be nice if we could twitter Rubin himself: A number of users, with a simple message: You should be ashamed of the GN launch. #Nexus Fail

Don't forget it was meant to be announced a week or two before it actually was, so that would have been even earlier.
So far all we have had is either conflicting information, or none at all. Samsung confirmed yesterday that release in the UK would be on the 17th, and literally a matter of hours later retailers are saying this has now been pushed back to w/c 21st
They have lost quite a bit of momentum with the delays and confusion imo. My attitude has gone from "wow, I need this phone now" to "do I really need a new phone?".
I will probably still buy it though
I bet they're still wringing out bugs/issues.
The conspiracy theorist in me says there are patent issues to work out.
My guess is they will never disclose why the launch has been delayed. But I do agree, it's likely lawyers, not engineers involved in the delay.
I like to feel special. If less people have it, it makes me more special.
I had a Samsung Wave in the U-S-of-A. I felt special. Until I started hating it for being so special (Samsung store didn't work in the US).

What the hell man, this is just crazy what is Microsoft thinking? This will only drive more people away from the platform and will keep phone sales at the rate they are now or lower. Who in the world wants to pay $99 a year just to be able to customize a phone? I personally do currently pay the $99 but will stop soon this is just a death sentence for Windows phone, really someone over at MS gets fired over this.
do you realize that most people would not care about these stuff, and we only nerds that like to hack our phones will matter. Maybe microsoft has something better in store? possibly in apollo we will get sideloading capabilities and other power user functions.

I've a Samsung WP unlocked by Chevron. So, I've installed Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps... this means that after the 120 days, theses apps won't work in my phone?
So basically MS and the Chevron team just ripped off everyone that went and bought a token? I thought the token was forever, was there ever any metntion that it would expire in the future? if not this sounds like a scam, well for those who paid. I see a law suit.

I don't see any law suits as Microsoft as offered to refund $99 and swap Chevron unlock for App Hub Developer unlock.
However, interesting thing would be how many $9 unlocks are from non-supported countries!?
Surely out of 10,000 there are at least 100 people who paid $9 and don't have access to App Hub - those can go for a law suit unless Microsoft is going to make up for it in any other fashion in a separate announcement.

You're one of the people who make me disgusted at this community. Nokia apps (and other OEM apps) are device specific. You need to buy those devices to get those apps, as those apps on other devices is called stealing. Yet, this entire community insists they are entitled to things they have never paid for... Most of you don't want these accounts to "develop" or contribute, you want these accounts to sideload apps you have no way of paying for/getting.

I could be wrong, but didn't Nokia release these apps in the earlier versions for other non-Nokia devices? Of course (now) Nokia is claiming that their updated apps will be only for Nokia devices. Not condoning piracy here, but I don't see a problem with side loading device specific apps on other Windows Phones. These apps are free to the the users anyway right? -Well most of them... As we all know, each manufacturer has its own collection of apps for their devices. -And we can all agree there are apps that are better than others in each manufacturer app store. If the apps are free, I find it a little ridiculous to say that Windows Phone users would have to go and buy a certain WP just to be able to use a device for a specific free app on their phone. -Now if each manufacturer released their apps to EVERY WP device with the apps being free for that specific device and had a paid version for non-specific devices, my argument would be irrelevant here. -But we know this is not the case.
Anyway, yes I do agree somewhat that some users want their phones dev unlocked just to sideload apps that they themselves didn't develop or buy, but I have to say that I believe some/most members here on XDA contribute to some form or fashion to the development/modding/hacking phone world. I myself became a Windows Mobile/Phone developer because I was amazed at what I could do with my phone when I first started getting into flashing roms for Windows Mobile. I kept on coming back to this forum to see what I could do next with my phone. I finally realized that I couldn't wait for the next thing to come out for my phone, so I started learning the development side of the phone. As the years kept rolling on, I became very familiar with the development process and even made quite a bit of money on my apps. -So the point is, calling people out on wanting the dev unlocks just to sideload restricted apps on their phones is sort of unfair. You and I do not know the motives of the other users on this forum.
Having bought the htc hd7 Im very happy that MS has atleast thought of offering something to us first generation guys! I have been wanting to upgrade, but I did figured that windows phone 8 would need new hardware to run it so waiting has been very good. I do feel kind of bad for the Nokia Lumina owners though. The Nokia 900 is an awesome phone, but upgrading into that phone you still had that 50-50 chance. Maybe Nokia can offer a trade-in upgrade program for those people. The 1st and 1.5 gen window phones has some good life in them. Its going to take some time for the win8 phones to evolve and good the good games and such. And Im so happy that MS decided to have an accessible sd slot.
I can't say I am happy we won't get WP8 ...
But I think WP7.8 can be a good compromise.
I need the complete list of the 7.8 upgrade features before make a final judgement.
All I can say is that the GUI change won't be enough to make me happy :/
You'd definitely get the revamped UI.
But, you'd be let down on the future apps section(as they'd be coded in native code). I'd recommend you to sell it, and buy the WP8 devices once it arrives.
Dissapointed in this. But understandable. Why develop a new is which runs on current tech when its not going to be available for a short while. Build it in for the latest tech and look forward.
Still doesn't help my titan, so can only hope this 7.8 update is worth while.
Will we still get this 'smartglass' its a feature im keen to usltilise and im also looking to get a surface once available so would like to be assured of compatibility
Well I am disappointed. I am a student and paid 350€ for a Lumia 800 back in December. So I guess I wont receive the majority of new apps at the end of the year. I planned to keep this device for around 3 years. But now I guess that most of the new apps will be coded for WP8. Another thing is, that the current generation of WPs will drop in price now that it is official that we wont get an update. I'm really frustrated... But I hope that MS and Nokia keep the updates coming.

Agreed. We know very little at this stage. Plus I got my Lumia 900 months ago for free. By the time there is a Windows Phone 8 handset that is comparable that is selling for the same price I will be halfway through my contract. I don't mind waiting around for <yr before my next upgrade.
MSFT just needs to come out with a good OS and user experience. It is pointless to shoe horn Windows Phone 8 onto hardware that can't run it. I like the Lumia 900 because of lack of lag. I don't want the experience to be marred.

I believe it's a very good point for the class action against MS and AT&T. Just keep googling for that and be ready to join
Won my lumia 900, and I planed to get an updated wp8 device anyway, so, to answer your question, no I don't feel cheated. I might be angry at myself anyway for buying one knowing dual core was coming in a few months (if I had signed a contract)
Considering all the features coming for WP8 and 7.8 haven't been announced yet, I don't feel cheated at all. I imagine more is coming in 7.8 than they stated today. Joe Belfiore was very specific that they have MANY great things to talk about with consumer features, but that wasn't the point of the conference today.
I'll feel pretty cheated if the only features WP7.8 gets is the new start screen...

A little cheated. Glad MS tried with 7.8 but I'm just worried about how that will fare down the line with 22 months left on my contract. Don't think I'll be waiting to find out.

Im going to sell.
The technoweenie in me wants to buy a WP8 when it comes out, but the realistic human in me feels cheated...
I just bought the Lumia 900, and to hear that a new version of the OS is coming out soon and that the product I just bought will be un-supported and development ceased (for the most part) pisses me off...
I'm pissed off enough that I'm still waiting for a purple screen fix, and now this?
If I were a Lumia owner I'd definitely feel cheated.
Looks like the Lumia 900 is going to be the Galaxy S+ of the Windows world.
Thrown to the market and 2 months afterwards you got outdated software because the manufacturer never planned to provide updates.
Not receiving updates seems to get normal in the mobile industry in some way.
This would be the point to switch to Android for me, but I'm not a big WP7 fan I have to admit.

Why? We don't even know the Windows Phone 7.8 features?

We've received two manufacturer updates already. And there have been at least two announced future updates... Tango and Windows Phone 7.8.

This is an interesting concept. So you think we should actually wait and see what updated features we will be getting before criticizing them? Great idea!

Of the lumia 900 owners, how many of you feel cheated and angry over how Microsoft is handling WP8.

Once all Windows Phone 8 and 7.8 are out why don't you ask this question and add a poll to your thread? Make it a good poll with at least one option that says I'm satisfied.
There is still a chance that Nokia will provide WP8 on the Lumia 800/900 isn't there? I wouldn't jump to any conclusions just yet.
Before anyone starts ranting about the announcement, Nokia is not Microsoft. Stop, think. Avoid replying anyway.

I don't know about the Hardware requirements. I haven't watched the keynote, but I don't think they've given a NFC requirement for all phones. Interesting thought. I guess it could happen. I don't think it will, although it would be nice, of course. Then again, maybe WP7.8 will be better than thought. Who knows?
I don't understand what it is people think they will be missing. WP8 brings support for dual core, high def screens, and NFC hardware. Does your phone have any of that? No. So you wouldn't be able to enjoy those features anyway even if WP8 did run on your phone.
Ok so we may not get the true multi tasking and Skype running in the background - we don't actually know yet - but did you buy your phone only on the basis that you would definitely get that one day? Is your phone suddenly going to stop working the day WP8 comes out? Are app developers all suddenly going to abandon the installed base of users for a new OS that doesn't have one yet?
When I got my Lumia two weeks ago, I knew that there was Skype coming with "serious" integration and VoIP API for others. I also knew that Microsoft bought Skype so I was expecting it.
At least that the Lumia 800 was for free.

Its always been said that skype couldnt work on WP7 due to the way the OS operates and while its not great im still happy they released some sort of app rather then not bother at all

You can't be serious?!
Zero. Give thanks that you get 7.8. Try to image Android users still stuck on Froyo or Gingerbread. Or 3GS or iPhone 4 users moving to iOS6.
Get over it and move to the future. 8 looks to be a fantastic competitor to iOS and Android.

This is different. The Lumia is a flagship that just came out. I'm amazed at how some of you are okay with this.
"Get over it and move to the future."?
Wtf man, what about all the people who got this on contract? You expect them to just "move to the future" and buy a new device off contract this early on?

LOL... I think Nokia gonna do something to help out the customer who did bought the Lumia product recently... I got what you mean...
Da, it sucks to register for a device for 2 years and then stuck with it (that is why i never sign the damn contract). But i believe Windows Phone 7.8 is actually Windows Phone 8 BUT without all the functions that require the physical hardware to handle.
Time will tell. Personally, i don't feel any lost, i changed phone almost every holiday season of the year. 2010 = First Windows Phone (HD7), 2011 = Mango Windows Phone (Eternity) , 2012 = Windows Phone 8. I am curious about what HTC has to offer for us.

I think you may have just described Microsoft's reason for not updating existing phones i.e. not because they are too old or too slow but because they won't benefit enough from the new features to justify the investment.
"Microsoft’s Greg Sullivan revealed the reasons behind the company’s choice not to offer a direct upgrade from Windows Phone 7.x to Windows Phone 8.
Describing some of the latest hardware changes in Windows Phone 8, that we outline here, Sullivan explained that "the nature of the investment [in Windows Phone 8] is primarily in areas that are not exploitable by existing hardware." Windows Phone 8 introduces support for multi-core processors, amongst other things, so the "Lumia 900 getting support for using dual-core or NFC doesn't mean a lot," says Sullivan, "because it doesn't have the hardware to take advantage of that." Microsoft decided to focus its efforts on Windows Phone 8 to make it as good as it possibly could. "To do the work to bring all of those elements to a platform that can't exploit them wasn't necessarily the most efficient use of resource," explains Sullivan."

Well, I would agree with some of it... except the nokia 900 sold fairly well (for a wp device anyway) on 24 month contracts. With a hardware company that killed its own in house OS, and an unproven wp on it.
Maybe label folks as short sighted or believers instead of stupid ?
Wmpoweruser keeps going downhill everyday, sometimes I think it's run by teenagers. The reality is most people don't care about updates, people buy Android phones running Gingerbread every day and they don't even know what they're missing. As long as current Lumia phones keep getting the essential apps (which I'm sure they will, starting with the Zynga games) people won't care that they don't have WP8. Only people like us care, people who follow that stuff.
Wmpoweruser is a gossip site. As this is an opinion piece, I have no problem with it other than calling people stupid. If sales do drop noticeably, somebody is just going to have to come up with some sort of incentive to keep people buying. Of course, the phone makers knew this was coming so I seriously doubt if they have gazillion WP7 devices in their warehouses.
The author estimates that instead of 10 only 2 million WP8 devices will be sold in Q4 2012 because Microsoft does not provide updates for WP7 devices.
I don't really get this logic.
If anything, an update to Windows Phone 8 might decrease some sales because WP7 users don't need to buy a new phone.
Also Microsoft promised at least 18 months of updates to the fact that the Lumia 900 won't get WP8 doesn't really matter anymore.
Last but not least, most people bought a phone because they liked it the way it was when they bought it. Just because there is WP8 doesn't mean I won't be able to enjoy the features of my current phone (+ 7.8).
It is sound logic. This is how blackberry lost many of its users. I used to be a blackberry storm2 user, the phone sucked but most of us with the phone eagerly awaited an upgrade to OS7.
For months, RIM said nothing, kept quiet didn't confirm or deny which phones would get the new os, and boy did the storm2 need an update for that terrible browser. Anyway, OS7 rolls along and no upgrade. If we wanted a new browser we had to buy the BB Touch.
I'm sure it sounded well on paper, after all all these old blackberry users would go out there and upgrade their phones right? Do you know what happens when users go to buy new phones? They look at all the options.. ALL of them. If if they have a bad experience with your phone or have been lied to misled, they most of them buy something else.
TLDR; most users wont upgrade because they are stuck on relatively new contracts, and when they do it is unlikely they would continue buying the same kind of phone if they have been treated poorly. Expect the conversion rate to be low.
I dont know it has worked out pretty well for apple for what 5+ years now?
