took me 7-8 hours to root the samsung moment once we got a copy of the leaked android 2.1....this phone is setup completely different and i dont physically have it to test anything.
im doing some research and hope to figure out a solution, but it'll be hard for me to test it for sure.
if anybody else has some insight with previous HTC and android experience, that'd be great to hear some other opinions?!
or maybe an HTC phone with similar file system structure which was rooted?
joey do u plan on getting this phone? i had a moment but was lucky enough to get the evo off someone that went to i/o.....it would be awesome to have your kernels working on this bad boy!!!

yea, im heavily considering it. i qualify for my upgrade so for $199 and giving up a hardware keyboard for all the great hardware features this has, i think its worth it!
i hope to be able to compile a few kernels for you and everybody else

ah dont even worry about the onscreen keyboard it takes a second to get used to it. that was the reason why i picked the moment over the hero but i still found myself using swype lol. as of now im just using the htc keyboard and its pretty slick so far just have to train the dictionary.
i work for sprint, my indirect rep came in with his evo the other day and so i installed swype 1.25 on it. FREAKIN. AWESOME. also, MAD props to joeykrim. i have the moment and he has done SO many wonderful things with it. but it looks like im going to htc...
EDIT: joey, i would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to see you move to the evo and see what that genius brain can cook up. if you ever need a tester, im all over it. been with you on sdx since the days you and speedrabbit were bustin down and fixing 1.5.
IM getting the EVO day of release and maybe another for testing. Let me know when you want to get this thing a try. i just hope it doesn't brick XD
knowing joeykrim, once he gets his grubby hands on an Evo - it'll be rooted there soon after.
glad to see some familiar names over here guys...
Looks like the question has just about been answered :>

Yeah but in case you guys haven't heard the shipped 2.1 rom you guys get may not be final. Sprint could easily push an update to close off root. Just look in the hero section, the final 2.1 RUU is still not able to be rooted by our best devs. Im not trying to worry anybody but it is a possibility.
Still a work in progress- and it built on the international version. But looks like its still a top priority phone that is being worked on for ICS!!

i am seriously LUSTING for ics on the T989. things like this makes me think were on the brink of eternal happiness...

something i did notice is that if we get a port similar to this....will we have to have the on screen buttons?
i mean thats like a good portion of our screen.....couldnt they make our touch buttons use those functions?!! idk just a thought

even if we dont get a port samsung has already said were getting it so im not worried either way ,i think id rather a build that was made for our phones then worked over and optimised by the devs on here than a port from another phone ...im completely happy with my phone now the way it is, i can wait for the update
He but the question is when?...
Look at the vibrant update to 2.2 it took forever. And the s4g as well. It's barely getting 2.3!
If samsung wants to knock competition off they have to get. It asap!

I think it will help though that they are releasing the ICS on the Galaxy Nexus though. They've had all this time to work with it before other phone suppliers. ya know?

im sure they want the galaxy nexus to be the only phone with it for a couple months to help sales then i expect them to roll out the updates, IMO 5mp camera and no external storage make the nexus a huge fail in my eyes
Agreed, the storage on the vibrant, released way back when, is still better than most other phones...

I really hope this phone gets an update. From what I understand the Vibrant still has not been updated to Gingerbread.
something you didnt notice, is that its an alpha build and they said very publically they are going to remove the buttons, if you see the build on the optimus 3d it doesnt have the on screen buttons, its just a feature they have to figure out how to turn on!

Something I did notice was the (not needed) sarcasm in your post. Yet thanks for telling me....if the guy said it in the video...I didn't hear bcuz I was at school and didn't have any headphones and didn't want disturb anybody with the speaker...so I watched it with no sound....lol
I have tried Alpha 9, there is sound, wifi, bt, network. no camara, microphone, problems to install applications from market, some live wallpapers dont work. can't wait release....
You can remove the buttons in the launcher. I'll wait till ics is stable on are phone. Gingerbread still has it problems till i can move to it.

HTC Sensation and Sensation XE are being updated today to Android 4.0.3
And my G Nexus is 4.0.2
I thought Nexus would be first with updates?

Maybe not for you, bur for me it does!
I bought my Nexus because everywhere I read about it was said that Nexus-phones get updates first from Vanilla Android.
And now HTC even ported their Sense over it?
Im starting to regret that I bought my Nexus. My SE Arc maybe wasnt that fast, but was more thinner and took much better pictures!

Several tablets, like the Transformer Prime, have been on 4.0.3 for weeks. You were guaranteed timely updates for the useful life of your phone, which is about 18 months. Not first.

Good play on version #
As more phone makers start to roll out ICS you'll see more and more version #'s, not necessarily equating to any tangible improvements.
This is a silly thread with a silly concern. Go root your phone.

Then sell your Nexus and go back. Nobody is making you keep it. you can root your phone and put 4.0.3 or even a 4.0.4 rom on it. If you dont want to root you phone you can unlock it, temporarily boot CWM and flash the stock 4.0.4 OTA.

well, you are acting like a kid. grow up.
I'm sorry you don't like your Nexus, but no one is forcing you to use it. Feel free to sell it and buy any HTC phone if you'd like. Truth is that the Nexus will still be the first to be updated to vanilla Android, because no other phone in existence will have it. You go buy the HTC phone it will have 4.0.3 and that's amazing! But it has Sense, and when it comes to the next update, you'll be *****ing again that its not coming and you'll want your Nexus back.
The fact that you'd consider leaving the Nexus on 4.0.2 for an HTC phone on 4.0.3 because its x.x.1 higher leads me to believe that you don't understand how great having a Nexus is.
I dont understand this impatience. The nexus will get the 4.0.4 update, likely very soon. Google is just finishing everything. They are not sitting around doing nothing. And they are not purposely holding back. They WANT us to have the update. Its just taking time.

Speaking of the "now generation" when are we getting a new BAMF? Jk man.
LOL.
Last I heard was next week, which will (hopefully) mark the first launch of the Maguro version.
Fine, Ill go rooting then.
But you guys really help me out if I dont succeed!
AFAIK theres a better radio (which is really useless today) in 4.0.4 or 4.0.3
If you really dont want your nexus i'll take it... Mine is in the shop getting wifi fixed. Had to RMA and i'm really missing it. I'm stuck using this brick of a Dell Streak, not having my nexus is really bad. But on the bright side I still have my Gtab running 4.0.3!
Sense4All is team of developers looking to get sense 4.0 on all Samsung devices so we may have more options for our arsenals. They are on the verge of releasing a Galaxy S3 Version but are having problems getting internal storage and WiFi to work. I'm willing to bet this will only work for the international version because of the LTE RIL.

I came across that site a couple weeks ago and it doesn't look very promising so far. Their furthest along ROMS, for devices that have been out for a long time, are still barely functioning. But maybe if they throw enough people at the SGSIII, they can get something that works OK by the time my warranty is up in a year and I dive into different ROMS.
I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this, because TouchWiz sucks balls... but it's going to take more than just booting with pretty much nothing working before I get my hopes up.
I'd help if I could since I'm one of the guys who wants this to come to fruition, but I have no development skills at all. I hope you guys can get it worked out though and look forward to seeing the finished product.

And the only other Sense 4 device on Verizon just came out (after the deadline for unlimited data) and isn't really aimed at the same market as SGSIII/One X anyway.

You are? I think touchwiz is an improvement over sense (not saying TW is awesome or anything, most ROMs have better UIs). I was in a Sprint store looking for a Case-Mat Pop (kickstand) for my phone a few days back, and I played around with the Evo LTE. I was really unimpressed with the latest Sense and was glad I went Sammy for this 2 year go around.

Removable battery, expandable memory, & AT&T exclusive...
I'll admit TouchWiz 4 has REALLY improved. But, Sense, even with its problems, still has a lot of function that's hard to let go of.
Would it be easier to get on the US variants?
I only say that because put the Adreno graphics on the S4 chips. I remember the NS4G Sense ports having issues with graphics because of the Hummingbird processor.
|Trolling with a smile|
Went with sammy for the removable battery mainly. The first couple of days with the s3 without a spare battery was killing me. Ofcourse it was a new phone so I was playing with it a lot and trying out different roms etc and battery went down fast. Plus I still had to use it to make calls and text so I had it hooked up to a charger everywhere I was (home, work, car). I was always afraid of it going down to 40% battery lol. Anyway after getting a spare OEM battery + charger all is well again. No more worries specially when I went out.
Touchwiz isnt bad but sense just looks nicer to me and not having to install extra widgets (twitter, facebook, weather) was nice. Also like the weather lock screen. I miss that.
Anyhow I'm now with tmobile and Im hoping these guys will port it over to all the carriers and not just sprint.
A couple of months ago I decided to upgrade to the Galaxy S4 and now I'm just so insanely bored with it that I am seriously considering buying an HTC One mainly so I can flash roms again. With the S4, unless you were lucky enough to have the original firmware, then you cannot unlock the bootloader and flash custom roms. I've always loved the HTC One but went for more familiar Galaxy S4 thinking that it would give me the same freedoms as my older Galaxy, but I was pretty wrong on that assumption. So I have a few questions for you all before I jump in...
1) Is there a safe and reliable method to unlock the bootloader that works with all firmwares? Do any of the updates lock down the phone like what happened with the S4?
2) What's S-off and do I need it? I've only had Samsung phones.
3) In your own opinion how healthy is development for this phone? I was hoping to run a stable Sense rom. Not really interested in AOSP roms.
Thank you all for your time.
I actually jumped over to the One from the S4 last week. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up on hangouts, mine is [email protected]
I'm glad I mad the change. I'm s-off, boot loader unlocked, and running a VERY stable sense ROM. With the S4, I had to use aosp because touchwiz was awful to me. Bloated and laggy. Sense has been so great, I don't feel any need to flash aosp right now.
I can also explain s-off a bit to you if you'd like.
The only thing I really miss is the far better camera experience on the S4. If picture taking on your phone is something you REALLY have to have. You may find yourself regretting. The One is not bad by any means, but for clarity and sharpness, I'd say the S4 is hands down better. We're also talking about camera phones here, can't really complain much. Only so much they can do with limitations on size and what not.
Sense is actually quite nice and I find myself switching between CM11 and a Sense built ROM. I can't make up my mind some times...haha
Does the 4.3 OTA break the ability to unlock the bootloader and root?
It shouldn't. Currently you're unable to, but that's just until beaups updates his s-off utility. So far so good! And with us finally getting official source for 4.3development should pick up even more. Honestly, i'm really enjoying this phone, the screen is slightly smaller than the s4, which was my initial apprehension, but I actually prefer that. I don't have to do that awkward stretch to reach the edges of the screen.

I'm a fan of larger screens so for me it'll be a little annoying at first but the speakers will more than make up for it when I'm watching a video. To be honest I really like the S4 but it's just so limiting (unless you're lucky enough to have an MDK version). Also it seems like EVERYONE these days is walking around with an S4, where as almost no one has an HTC One. That's not really a good reason to choose it over the S4, but to me it kind of makes it special by being unique. I just really hate that Verizon doesn't carry the black model because if they did I would already have the One.
This screen in plenty big, don't worry. That was my primary concern, but I haven't missed it. I actually had an MDK model, since I got the s4 on release day. I do love these speakers on the One, too. The build quality on this thing is incredible though, it just feels so... Premium. No more plastic lol
I switched from a s4 as well. I miss the camera but that's it.

I'm getting kind of paranoid now that I see there's no root method for the 4.3 OTA yet. I'm really hoping when I get it it's still on 4.2. Should I immediately put it into Airplane mode? I've heard stories of Galaxy S4s automatically downloading and installing the OTA without any user input...
You shouldn't have to. Mine has always asked me if I wanted to install. Wouldn't hurt to throw it in airplane mode, though. An update to rumrunner should come along soon, there wasn't much in the OTA that could've patched that all up.

I should be okay to do rumrunner on that version right? I saw on the website it was listed. Does anyone have a good youtube video on using rumrunner (on Windows) to link me since I'm an HTC noob coming from Samsungland?
I'm not crazy about the button placement, lack of a menu button, and losing .3" of screen but I'm so far loving this phone and won't miss the S4 once it's gone.
