[Q] Possibly switching to the HTC One - Verizon HTC One (M7)

A couple of months ago I decided to upgrade to the Galaxy S4 and now I'm just so insanely bored with it that I am seriously considering buying an HTC One mainly so I can flash roms again. With the S4, unless you were lucky enough to have the original firmware, then you cannot unlock the bootloader and flash custom roms. I've always loved the HTC One but went for more familiar Galaxy S4 thinking that it would give me the same freedoms as my older Galaxy, but I was pretty wrong on that assumption. So I have a few questions for you all before I jump in...
1) Is there a safe and reliable method to unlock the bootloader that works with all firmwares? Do any of the updates lock down the phone like what happened with the S4?
2) What's S-off and do I need it? I've only had Samsung phones.
3) In your own opinion how healthy is development for this phone? I was hoping to run a stable Sense rom. Not really interested in AOSP roms.
Thank you all for your time.

I actually jumped over to the One from the S4 last week. If you have any questions feel free to hit me up on hangouts, mine is [email protected]
I'm glad I mad the change. I'm s-off, boot loader unlocked, and running a VERY stable sense ROM. With the S4, I had to use aosp because touchwiz was awful to me. Bloated and laggy. Sense has been so great, I don't feel any need to flash aosp right now.
I can also explain s-off a bit to you if you'd like.

The only thing I really miss is the far better camera experience on the S4. If picture taking on your phone is something you REALLY have to have. You may find yourself regretting. The One is not bad by any means, but for clarity and sharpness, I'd say the S4 is hands down better. We're also talking about camera phones here, can't really complain much. Only so much they can do with limitations on size and what not.
Sense is actually quite nice and I find myself switching between CM11 and a Sense built ROM. I can't make up my mind some times...haha

Does the 4.3 OTA break the ability to unlock the bootloader and root?

It shouldn't. Currently you're unable to, but that's just until beaups updates his s-off utility. So far so good! And with us finally getting official source for 4.3development should pick up even more. Honestly, i'm really enjoying this phone, the screen is slightly smaller than the s4, which was my initial apprehension, but I actually prefer that. I don't have to do that awkward stretch to reach the edges of the screen.

I'm a fan of larger screens so for me it'll be a little annoying at first but the speakers will more than make up for it when I'm watching a video. To be honest I really like the S4 but it's just so limiting (unless you're lucky enough to have an MDK version). Also it seems like EVERYONE these days is walking around with an S4, where as almost no one has an HTC One. That's not really a good reason to choose it over the S4, but to me it kind of makes it special by being unique. I just really hate that Verizon doesn't carry the black model because if they did I would already have the One.

This screen in plenty big, don't worry. That was my primary concern, but I haven't missed it. I actually had an MDK model, since I got the s4 on release day. I do love these speakers on the One, too. The build quality on this thing is incredible though, it just feels so... Premium. No more plastic lol

I switched from a s4 as well. I miss the camera but that's it.

Well I did it. I bought a brand new One and I'm just waiting to get it. Very excited

Sweet, you won't regret it! If you have any questions regarding the differences in terminology (s-off, RUU, that kinda stuff), I'm happy to help. I know I had quite a few when I made the jump.

I will definitely have many questions, and once I get everything going I will hit you up. Thanks a bunch

Anytime man, glad to help

I'm getting kind of paranoid now that I see there's no root method for the 4.3 OTA yet. I'm really hoping when I get it it's still on 4.2. Should I immediately put it into Airplane mode? I've heard stories of Galaxy S4s automatically downloading and installing the OTA without any user input...

You shouldn't have to. Mine has always asked me if I wanted to install. Wouldn't hurt to throw it in airplane mode, though. An update to rumrunner should come along soon, there wasn't much in the OTA that could've patched that all up.

I got a brand new one at a VZW store over the weekend and it came with the .8 update so it was 2 updates away from 4.3

Just got a one from Verizon mail order. It came with 1.10.605.10.
Much nicer than my galaxy s3! Now I need to read up on rooting and unlocking.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk 4

I guess I got lucky. My phone came with 4.2.2 software version 1.10.605.8
I should be okay to do rumrunner on that version right? I saw on the website it was listed. Does anyone have a good youtube video on using rumrunner (on Windows) to link me since I'm an HTC noob coming from Samsungland?
I'm not crazy about the button placement, lack of a menu button, and losing .3" of screen but I'm so far loving this phone and won't miss the S4 once it's gone.

Not gonna lie, it's super easy. You don't need a video. You basically hit enter a couple times. Just follow the written directions

Coming from Sensation to SGS3

I don't think I ever been so anxious to get a phone as much as I am to get the Galaxy S3 later on this month. When I first laid my hands on it during the summer, I already knew I wanted it. I'm coming from the HTC Sensation, one of my favorite phones. Anything I should know about the Galaxy (I've done my research, know how to flash/root,etc.)?
That it's awesome, any more brain busters?

I just made the exact same transition. No firmware to match with ROM's, just have to match up the radio.
One of the biggest differences for me was just how thin the phone was compared to the sensation. It's tough to hold the Sensation now.
Just make sure to back up your IMEI number as soon as you get the phone and have fun there's a lot of stuff to flash here. Your in luck too, cyanogen him self owns this phone and is getting ready to release 4.2 jelly bean nightly soon.

I made this same change just a month ago and I love the s3. One of the biggest difference is changing radios is MUCH easier, no more going into the bootloader and flashing the radio, with the s3 they are called "modems" and you flash it just like you do with a rom. Bigger screen obviously, but also better sound and volume through the speaker. WAY faster in general use, even rooted and overclocked my sensation was still slower than my underclocked s3. There are just as many if not more custom rom's for the s3 and everybody makes accessories for it.
I'm getting the GS3...just waiting to find a good holiday deal on it

as did i. but i did get pretty good resale value out of it, paid 250 and sold it for 200 after 9 or 10 months. was a really good phone but honestly, if you enjoyed your sensation you will LOVE the s3:good:

Any new Fido Galaxy S3 users here? Just got mine

After a long time staying loyal to the Nexus line I just picked up an S3. Main reason was the 44$ price tag and the fact I could stick a 64GB micro SD in here.
So far I think the phone is ok but WOW does their bloatware make the phone sucks. I really want my old Android OS back and wil be reading all the guides I can about flashing it.
Anyone else gotten one? Anyone flashes it yet?

Just root it and freeze/delete the apps you don't need. Stay away from AOSP, you'll get used to Touchwiz and love what it offers over those buggy ROMs.

I may try and find someone in town with a custom rom S3 and try it out. I REALLY miss my CM roms on my Nexus S.
You are right though, there are some great features bundled in the touchwiz OS but a ton I simply want gone. I simply hate the layout of a lot of the included programs like the SMS, calendar and phone.

If it's CM you're after, that's definitely available for your new phone. The device code you're looking for is d2att, i.e. this is the download page you'd want.
Of course, you might want to root the device first (the most applicable image for your device would probably be the Rogers one), and put a new recovery image on there - I suggest TWRP for that, though if you're used to CWM that's certainly an option as well.
Welcome to the wide world of the S3, and have fun!
If you want AOSP / AOKP get Task650 Roms. Hes has a 100% perfect 4.1.2, and a great stable 4.2.1 ROM out. Check in original android. Been using it for a long long time on both the S3's in our household and everyones super happy. Super fast and no crashes or problems. TW was just too slow.
His Rom's are for AT&T.

Man you guys are all so welcoming with the wonderful links. Thank you so much.
So im surprised no one else has chimmed in as a new fido owner. I must say their cost is a little high for the phone which might be the reason why. 250$ on a 2 year plan for a phone that is free most elsewhere aint cheap. Luckily for me I got a great deal on it (44$ total cost!)
Does anyone have some warranty related info or links they could send me? I have read about an hours worth and cant seem to gather a clear picture. From what I can tell theres are three methods to rooting this device.
Also, any info on what to backup in order not to brick this phone?
This phone is quite a bit more work than the Nexus I had earlier. None the less I am pretty sure ill have tons of fun!

LMAO. Touchwiz is complete garbage and really slows the S3 down. I used it for a couple of weeks and could not stand all the Samsung bloat and the Samsung replacement apps (phone, messaging, etc.).
Wiped it and I'm running CM 10.1 nightly (1/13) and the phone is a beast now. Super fast, with the best possible UI, i.e. the way Android is meant to be!
Yes there are a few bugs but they're nothing major and at this point CM 10.1 is definitely good enough to be a daily driver. DO NOT hesitate to drop TW crap for CM!

[Q] help Root SCH-i535PP on 4.4.2

Ive been searching night and day trying to find a way to root my galaxy S3 (SCH-i535) running 4.4.2 . Ive come up empty handed and as may know TOWEL ROOT DOES NOT WORK ON THIS BUILD. The most progress I have made is unlocking developer options with 7-tap doctrine. (haha) So this is pretty much a "calling all car" for those out there who are well versed in the art of rooting and all things $ sudo.
Info on safely reverting to an android OS that is rootable would also be useful.
l or any knowledge about the SCH-I535PP on 4.4.3 (pre paid verizon Galaxy S3) and exploits discovers .
Im lightly knowledgeable in Terminal, soooooo. If any one knows some work arounds or anything that would at least make me smile please feel free to write.
Tell me me what you all know and restore my faith in the power of the internet community.
much love,
-Lifehertz
ive also been looking
ive also been looking to root my phone also. all ive been able to dig up is possible roms that might be flashable with this model. and help would be greatly appreciated!
I knew I wasnt alone.
For some reason i have faith that someone is working on getting this phone rootable.
Until then lets keep the conversation going.
Do you have any links to these rims. Also, what are your thoughts?
I want root too because this phone is not compatible with samsung gear apps for my neo...very heartbreaking. ..wanted to put more apps on my watch but can't because this verizon galaxy s3 prepaid is not updated like all the other ones.....
Hey guys, I'm just posting to join in the misery. I feel like a hero for getting past the activation setup wizard! I have spent many hours researching how to root this stupid phone, and at this point its my white whale. There will be a way eventually, and this thread can be our anchor when that day comes. If anyone has a problem with the setup wizard, let me know.
The white whale under my friend.
Im curious as to how long the SCH-I535PP has been available on 4.4.3.
Because if it has been a short amount of time then the true developers and root wizards
Probably haven't had much need or want to work on a root for this phone.
I am noticing though after walmart dropped the price of the phone severely
And christmas came around. There are a Lot of new SCH-I535PP users. So maybe if we keep asking around and raising awareness about this build needing root, then a root genie will hear the cries of the community and get to work granting us our wish.
Verizon really locked this up with the recent update. This phone is two years old and there are many stronger phones coming out the root gods are focusing on blessing. But, its not hard to see that the SCH-I535PP is fantastic tool for its price point.
Please, anyone who reads this and is well versed in rooting phones, please do the SCH-I535PP community a solid and help us step out from being the prison bars of 4.4.2.
Thank you for letting me ramble. I hope it helped keep the spirit alive. Haha
Disclaimer: I'm an android noob, and everything in this post could be wrong. I'm just trying.

I know that version of kitkat was released on June 2nd, 2014, if that helps.
I don't understand whether ALL sch-i535 after that date are blocked from rooting, or ONLY the sch-i535pp (prepaid) version. I've read conflicting things because the circumstances change over time, but the threads on forums stay the same. What was true 5 months ago might not be true anymore.
I believe (could be wrong) that every single phone that was updated after June 2nd is completely SOL and blocked from being rooted. I think Towelroot was the last thing that worked for anybody, and even that method is lost to ANYTHING with a Kernel date of June 3rd or later. Mine is July 22nd. I believe the truth is that the vast majority of people that are rooted are just not updating to KitKat because they know it will un-root them and the party is over. I think that anyone with a phone that is old but updated to kitkat can reset to factory and get back to JellyBean or whatever version they originally had that can be rooted. So that leaves a small, but growing population that just simply can't root because we have the newest galaxy S3s with late kernel dates off the shelf . It's just getting harder and harder to find exploits. They guy who wrote towelroot works for google now, finding/fixing exploits that he once used to hack phones.
Either the population will catch up with us 'un-rootables' or they will leave us behind as bigger and better things come along. The Galaxy S3 is (kind of) yesterday's problem. I'm just sayin.....
I truly hate to be the burden of bad news but I can't say I'm surprised by verizon finally locking down the S3. The contract version was rumored to have been locked down with a version past the last official OTA of 4.4.2 but it seems that the pp version was moved to 4.4.3 which in all seriousness was then locked down by big red
Going forward I'd stay away from verizon as far as phones go, the short version of this is the fact that they will try anything possible to lock down every android phone they can

Im beginning to accept this fact. You all have been great. If verizon is a bust, do you know of any prepaid phones that are easily rooted? I might sell this stupid paper weight. My goal is to be able to fully use terminal and learn the android Unix shell. These things are extremely powerful and yet we arent supposed to know or use its power..

How about someone looks for the 4.3 kernel for this phone, flashes it through ODIN, root with towelroot, and goes back to the new kernel with root! That's what they did with the AT&T Galaxy S5, and it should work and Verizon devices too.

I doubt that'll happen, since the AT&T and Verizon S5 and many other devices have been rooted with downgrading the kernel. Either way though, IDK if it'll even work, sknce it sounds impossible to boot a JB kernel on a KK platform. Has anyone tried Cydia Impactor on this device?

s-off and bootloader unlock question

Hi all!
Just picked up an M9 this week... Had an M8 prior to that. I've been reading through the forums and spent some time on the M8 forums flashing, testing, and customizing the phone with Roms. I've been reading about the M9 and have noticed some mention that Verizon is firm about a locked bootloader and all. I was curious how on the M8, S-off and unlocking the bootloader was achieved if Verizon is so strict about keeping the phone locked down? Thanks for any responses in advance Looking forward to customizing this beast of a phone. Thank you to all the Devs that make all of this possible!
Cheers,
Ren

The M8 was like this when it first came out. Yes Verizon is strict. From what I have been told they are trying to find a Temporary Root Exploit to be able to S-Off and all that goodness. We just have to be patient like the First Model M8 people were. Luckily when I first got my M8 it was rootable and stuff. So just be patient, or feel free to donate to jcase and beaups to help buy them energy drinks.
Everything @Balian67 said an also one tip. Don't do any updates till you are s-off as updates could cause exploit not to work if there is a exploit released.

Totally agree with this!! Oh my lord is there a difference between Touchwiz and Sense. I did go back to Nova Launcher for the actual day-to-day launcher but the framework is...I dare to say...enjoyable to use. The way Samsung complicates settings drives me bonkers. It just doesn't need to be that complicated.
I'm in S6 trial week. Lol. So far not impressed. The so called super snappy touchwiz has a laggy keyboard whether stock or google. Also don't get me started on Chrome browser lag. Little things here and there that are non existent on even the m8. Overall its snappy but it still has annoying hicups here and there. Gonna take a miracle for me not to exchange for an m9 next weekend.
I had an M7 but not an M8 and had put AOSP on it because Sense just didn't feel right to me.
I bought an M9 because of the retail employee deal of no-contract for $300 and trading in for the new one every year. Ditched my G3 and haven't looked back. I love Sense 7. Not only is the UI smooth and really easy to use, the whole design language flows so well with the physical design of the phone. I don't think I'll be putting a custom ROM on this but I would love root for an ad blocker. I forgot how many ads there were on phones until I had to use this M9 without root.
Is anyone planning on making a bounty thread?

No need really. Bounty threads are worthless distractions too.
For example, one of the last ones claimed only netted the receiver 30% of all promised funds.
Sunshine will likely include vzw some time in the near future...you probably didn't use it on your m7 but it's a standalone app and costs $25.

Well, it worked on the S5, that's for sure. Leading to the most prolific exploit in android history with Towelroot, so I wouldn't say pointless. I'm not sure the exact % that paid their pledges, but I paid mine. The ads in apps and webpages are really starting to bug me honestly, and I miss my battery-saving apps and xposed modules. I jumped to HTC from the S5 specially to restore bootloader access and ultimately CM-based ROM's to my phone experience. I guess leaving Verizon would have been a more thoughtful choice, but oh well. If anyone starts a bounty thread (and yes I know almost everyone thinks its a bad idea), I'm in.
That being said, much respect to the people working on a root method for us currently. You guys make my little phone hacking hobby possible, so thank you.

I don't know exactly how true it was, but when I first got my M8 and found out that I had to pay $25 to get S-OFF, at first I was hesitant...But I kept reading WHY and immediately understood and paid right away. It separates guys like us who pay their pledge from people who DON'T. As I am sure you would EASILY pay the $25 to get S-OFF. I know I would. I almost prefer it this way, because im pretty much sure it comes with tech support for those who need it. If only more americans stood by their word instead of promising things they would never fulfill. I know that this community has always been about contributing and free things to make all of our experiences better. I get that, but all too often, people take the work and claim it to be theirs. I remember a few devs (that I talked to a lot) had this problem with users of the Samsung Moment and HTC Evo 4G. So between all of the devs hard work not being appreciated (especially when they do this stuff for THEIR phone and they release it to us to enjoy and some people are always complaining or demanding features, yet they don't contribute by donating to the dev so they can buy energy drinks to keep their mind going, or beer to help relax them after they finished a massive update that fixed all the bugs and added features and stuff. Then people wonder why they have to pay $25. Well I have been a member of XDA for years, contributed a lot here or on irc chat, and I will gladly pay $25 to get S-OFF, Root, and Custom Recovery. Why? Because since the DAWN of xda, everyones phone has been made far better then what ANY manufacturer gives us. I mean seriously...I would have Android Lollipop on devices that Samsung or whoever has long gone moved on from. Why? Because of XDA, and the devs. I swear if everyone paid $25 these devs would be able to buy all sorts of devices to root for us. I know I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro, and an HTC. So I appreciate it, and you know what? I consider that $25 a donation to have root on devices period. Why? Because without the people who know what they're doing, I wouldn't be able to install xposed, make entire backups of my phone (so if the device fails while on warranty), I can EASILY restore my phone. I had that happen with my old HTC Evo 4G LTE. That phone broke 3 times on me and each replacement bestbuy gave me (2), all I had to do was get S-OFF flash a custom recovery, and do a "Restore" then all my texts were there, apps were there (with data), call logs were there. I can go on. That $25 is security for me. So saying all that, I will sit here as patient as I can be to get S-OFF and when the time comes to hit the pay button, there wont be a second thought. No regrets. No more stress. Any more Andybones roms to flash.
BOOM (pardon all the grammatical errors, yall get my point.............right?)

I want to buy a T-Mobile G4. Some questions.

I am planning on going to the T-Mobile store later today to pick up a new G4, but first I wanted to ask some questions.
First, how long do you think I'll be waiting until I can root/flash ROMs/etc? I can live without these things for a while, but not forever!
Second, are the touchscreen and other issues something that I should seriously consider before getting this phone, or are they not that big of a deal? Are you guys all happy with the battery life?
So far I have not found any issues. It's been great on my end. Root will come.. It always does

I bought the T-Mobile version from eBay and received it on Saturday. So far no issues. The only gripe I have is slow charging while using the phone, but I just ordered some quick chargers so I should be good.

Thus far I am pretty happy with mine. I have noticed that it sometimes interprets a quick swipe as a press (thus opening an app I did not intend) and that, at least on mine, the digitizer may not go all the way to the edge of the screen. The leftmost 1/8" or so of the screen does not appear to register touch input. The right side isn't great either, but does seem better. I have not heard anyone else mention it though, so hopefully it is just my unit.
The only other gripe I have about it for now is that the viewing angle on the screen is pretty narrow. If you aren't looking at the display straight on it tends to get washed out.

You should never get a phone with the hope of it getting root. It's a bad idea. Root is getting harder and harder to achieve especially with dmverity implemented (Variants of the Note 4 after 9 months still do not have root and most likely never will without a bootloader exploit.) Bootloader exploits are almost non existent. Unfortunately the Tmobile version of this phone has a locked bootloader. You have to also think how long you will have the phone. Are you willing to wait half or more of it's usable life for root?
Get a phone with an unlocked bootloader, then you will never have to worry about it. Get the G4 815 for example or a nexus. I'm running 5.1.1 on my note 3 which would be impossible with a locked bootloader. Unlocked bootloaders will give you a much longer lifespan.
Happy with mine as well, although I'm using MetroPCS SIM on my phone.
My advice really, hold on to your Nexus 5. I think its gonna be a while before you see any ROMS or unlock the boot loader. I can't go back go my Nexus 5 cause this phone is awesome. It was an impulse purchase.
If ROMS and having the phone fully unlocked for development, please don't buy it. Also the more I use this phone, the more I believe that CM12.1 even when it does hit the LG G4, it will be not running at its full potential. Some little things that Stock has, better camera app, the tap lock and unlock screen, lock screen quick view, I mean little things that the CM12.1 Rom will be missing unless it has access to all the drivers of the phone.
I've never forgiven LG for what they Did to the G2X. This phone is awesome and will have best experience with the Stock ROM. Its Not AOSP, I wish it was but it won't.
Just wait. The main reason I got it was because removable battery and SD card. Can't wait for ZeroLemon to release the batter for LG G4.

Does the international version have all the same bands? I really want to have band 12. WiFi calling is also important to me.
I wanted to buy it through T-Mobile also so I could get it on EIP, but I could just finance it through my parents too.
Where can I buy the international version?
What do you think the probability is that the T-Mobile version will get rooted?
Thanks

I think root will come out by end of summer. If your wanting root soon then don't get the G4. Personally I just suck it up and deal with it.
I've even had horrible dirty bad thoughts of selling my G4 and waking up with a ZenPhone 2 in my hands. Should I pull the trigger? http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00VWKKEYO/ref=cm_sw_r_udp_awd_7YoIvbGEVV1H6

The stock ROM isn't awful. I came from SlimKat (based on CM) and there are definitely some features that I miss (Long press back to kill & double pressing back to switch the the most recent app mostly). But after installing Nova and reducing the DPI (via ADB) it is very workable. I am still holding out hope for root, but with how great the camera is I am not sure I would flash back to an AOSP ROM.

Touch issues are fixed by the keyboard update. Just be sure to do all the updates available and you should be right as rain there.
Battery life, I get 28+ hours while streaming Spotify through BT speaker for 12 hours, an hour voice calls, as well as a bunch of other goofing around on the device. It's not Note 4 life, but it's far better than any most other phones I've had.
Root/unlock will come, but it could be a while. Honestly, I like the phone well enough stock to not really be all that worried about it. While I'm sure that some devs could make this a bit snappier by debloating it, the stock UI really is pretty snappy and nice.
Camera is also fantastic. Fast action shots come out clear....close up shots have TONS of detail.

True, but I can't stay locked down without root forever while they wait for the bounty to get to $15k. I give it another few weeks for root, or I'm thinking of jumping ship to the ZenFone 2.

Is that rooted? Checked it out...not much development going no over there...have like 1 ROM thread that was started back in March with not much since.
I'll chill here...looking forward to what does come when this device gets unlocked.

I had to pay a whopping $317 just to get my hands on a G4 through tmo's financing department. At least my monthly payments on it are very low.
But it will cost me $322 shipped for that ZenFone 2! I just want to play with it! lol
The phone is great, few things though, the root and subsequently the ROMs will be limited especially when compared to a nexus or even an S6, I have owned every nexus since the Galaxy nexus and I also owned the LG g3, which was a great phone, but development even to this day just never compared and that's mainly because of the carrier specific versions. So if you really like to try all kinds of different ROMs I suggest getting the Nexus 6 although I would say this phone is much better in my opinion but I miss and will continue to miss the variety of ROMs and customizations from my Nexus 6 as well as the screen and front facing speakers. Biggest benefit over the nexus 6 is the camera as well as the size/design/weight. As far as the battery I highly highly suggest using nova launcher instead of the stock LG and disable the LG apps if you can makes the battery life way way better, also get the free battery and SD card that will help to Haha.

Are they waiting on the bounty to hit $15k or until they can get a solid app with no errors that they can charge for?
I think it's more about the app.

Well said sir,
I screwed up and bought a Note 4 because of the deal I was getting ($400 outright), I immediately put away my flashaholics LG G2, and head to XDA only to see the At&t Note 4 has no ROMS, Kernels, or TWRP. Could not be more disappointed, a phone that should be a beast is hampered by no root. I would never touch the G4 or any other phone without full permanent root available in first 90 days of retail release. You are better off waiting to see what the new 2015 Moto X, Nexus ??, and OnePlus 2 will offer.
