lost my Nexus already .... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

so yeah, only had the thing since this past thursday and now it's gone. i have no idea where i could have left it and had been out & about today going all over the place. i ended up filing a claim($99.. wee!) and am supposed to be getting a new one tomorrow.
the funny thing to is that the last time i had insurance was like 5 - 6 years ago when i had the first RAZR on Verizon and never used it so had cancelled it way back then. when i got this Nexus on thursday i thought to myself "hmm.. well, maybe i should..."
and yes, i've tried to think of the last place i had it & back tracked the past few hours and no luck.
well, if it ended up with anyone else have fun with your bad ESN Nexus!
p.s. i accidentally dropped it a few days ago anyway and it made me sad...

WTH !!!
how can you lose a brand new phone ?
try using the GPS locator
did you enable your google locator in Maps?

i believe there was a phone locator app that could be installed remotely but i do not remember the name.

You should have tried lookout plan b

i never bothered installing any sort of 'security/lost phone' software & always have location/GPS disabled(because i'm a paranoid weirdo).
i suppose i should do that from now on though.
on the + i'll now have 2 chargers & 2 headphones so i guess that's worth $99 eh?...

yeah i just know it's going to end up some place obvious... considering i'll have moments for instance where i'll be all "where the hell's my car keys!?" and frantically looking all over for them when i have them in my hand.

I had this happen. I set off the alarm to find the phone in my bosses office. Scared the living crap out of him. Lol

Use lookout plan b. You can install it from any computer just log into your Google account on the android Market website. Then you text LOCATE to your phone and it will email you its location.

Asurion, only because the dude at Best Buy Mobile was trying to push their insurance so hard it pissed me off.
oh and about that text thing rcfcyl, is that the only option?... i ask because i have Verizon completely block text messaging on my phone(i don't use txt at all) + always root & delete the messaging apps.

I think there's a web interface as well but I'm not 100% sure about that.

That sucks man! Should have installed a tracker. I lost a phone last year and was able to track it down at a back at a back I was at using Lookout.

i wonder who's the lucky guy that found the free mini-tablet ?

Something smells fishy about this....
You "lost" your phone not long after you "dropped" it. You havnt tried the plan b app which people are telling you to do. Instead u say u asked ur service provider to block all messeging and u say u removed the stock messaging apps....
Shouts insurance scam to me mate..... ide be trying everything to locate my phone. I think you know what happend to it.

i had Verizon start blocking txt msg's last March when i got the Thunderbolt(never ever used txt msg'ing nor cared for it and had heard about people getting txt spam & didn't want to get any txt charges coming through for whatever reason).
as for 'plan b', yeah i hear about that now after i started this thread...(and upon hearing about it and the way it works via 'txt' had asked if there was an alternate way to protect/locate a phone)
and dropping, i guess i'm clumsy with phones. i dropped my thunderbolt like 3 - 4 times, dropped my incredible 2 once and again this time with the nexus. at least with the TB i learned and got a sturdy case for it.. haven't gotten around to doing so with the nexus yet.
but you're welcome to believe what you wish.

I have cerberus (highly recommended), and I think if I ever lose my phone, I will be able to keep people honest/get them arrested if they are not...

Sorry, I hope you find it

Like others have mentioned. Plan B from Lookout Security works well. It will text you it's location even after the phone has been wiped.

when you install plan b, it will auto email you its position for 30 minutes every 5 minutes automatically.
After that, you have to txt your phone for it to tell u where it's at.

VZW tech support

I have been dealing with verizon tech support on my phone a ton lately. Can they tell over the cell signal if the phone is son/soff or rooted/unrooted. I'd like to be son and 7.01 radio but incrom is tons better than unrooted
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
That I know of they can't, what problems are you dealing with on your phone that you need to call them? the reason I ask is because they might be rom specific problems
Well, since new on any extended network areas, data and incoming calls are fine. Calling out I get a prerecorded message saying Please reenter the 10 digit number you are trying to dial, do not hit send. Sometimes that work maybe 50/50. They warrantied the phone about 2 weeks ago, same thing. Last night on the phone they offered me a $100 trade in credit on my inc for any recertified phone.... but its droidx, droid pro, or samsung fascinate. I'm not impressed with any of em. Been tons of roms and the 7.28, 9.01. and 11.XX radio, all the same. Verizon TS from a payphone last night couldn't even see my phone on the network, but they swear theres nothing wrong. i was temptedn, but root the dtock rom so I can switch back and forth as needed.
Sorry to hear, I hope everything works out great. I guess to see if their suggestions work maybe you can try returning your phone back to stock, I don't think it would hurt.
I hope it does too, but this has been ongoing since we got the incredibles when they first came out... VERY frustrating
wow, i really wonder how much their tech department really knows, seems like they have many problems they can not figure out. my wife and i just got two dinc's through verizon about 3 months ago, mine is fine and have had zero issues, but my wife's is a whole different story.
notice hers would stop getting text and phone calls a few times a day. we would be in the middle of a conversation(text that is) and she would just stop receiving my texts, i would still get hers, and i would try and call and it would ring normally on my end and go to her voice mail. She would not be getting anything on her end, until sometime later they would all flood in at once.
well this was happening almost from day one, her phone was stock, then i rooted it and tried different roms and kernels and still same issue. well i have called verizon and talked to techs on at least 5 different occasions, and they have completely replaced her phone with a newer Dinc, yet same problem persist! it is in my opinion that the problem would have to be on their end of it,since two phones in a row are doing this, and mine on the same account in the same area does not do it. i am getting ready to call again today when my wife gets home from work, oh yea it sunday not sure if they in so maybe tomorrow. but this is ridiculousness, they just keep having me go through settings and resetting phone to factory and all that, i just can not see it being the phone at this point, but they are convinced it is.
Tech support level 2 has the network team looking at my call log. They are supposed to call me Mon. evening to let me know the results. They also offered me a hundred dollar credit on any recertified phone. I'm just not impressed with any of those phones.

Ok, sort of decided to try a different phone. Any opinions of droid x, the fascinate, about any non htc phones would be nice. Leaning towards the X since it seems to have a huge dev base here also.

The moto phones have locked bootloaders meaning limited customization if that's an issue for you.

Having "friends" that work for VZW, I really don't think 1st level support can look and see if you are rooted or not. I do, however, think that level "3" and up support can tell. I know they have the means in place to start monitoring what phones receive updates and what phones do not update. I also don't think they are going to worry about the DIncs, but they may focus more of the newer 4G phones that have been rooted.
OK, verizon is insane. They are under the impression I'm trading in my inc under their advice for 100 bux towards another model phone at full retail price. That is SO not happening. I did find this thread http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...ne-can-help-me-reprogram-a-flashed-Incredible
last night. If that information is correct for the settings I think thats at least part of my issues. Can anyone confirm those are correct? My wife is about 800 miles from me with her inc for me to just look and see. US Cellular is sounding more and more inviting this week.
Talked to a person at home last night on craigslist. Wants to swap his 6 week old droid X for my incredible. Verizon didn't care but said it wouldn't be insurable. Assurion said sure no problem. I love consistently wrong answers
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App

Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
I bought my Incredible used, then sold my D2. Motorola build quality is good but I had their UI and locked bootloaders. As far as I know, when you get a used phone, you don't get the manufacturer's warranty but you should be able to insure it. Condition and ESN/MEID are the main things to look out for.

Have traded before without issue. Good luck!!
Talked to Verizon to make sure it was acceptable with them. Now they tell me if the trouble tickets are not cleared and the problem fixed by next Friday their policy is to replace my incredible with a similar value model. Some 2 week ticket policy nonsense. I really wish they could make up their collective minds. Person I'm swapping with did not mind waiting till next weekend, especially since if verizon tech support does not come through, I'll take the inc to the local stroe, swap it for a cpo one, then swap that for the droid X. I still have ZERO confidence its going to affect my problem is the sad part
well finaly my wifes phone is fixed, she is now receiving text all the time and on time.
here is the kicker, several tech support calls ago i asked the tech if changing phone mumber might work, considering they had already replace phone and problem did not go away, and i figured if it was account settings then it should effect my phone as well. so finaly i talked my wife into changing phone number, kinda of last resorte for her, well finaly she listened to me and it has almost been a week and no missed calls or texts, before it was happening seveal times a day, very very anoying!! but it is all good now.

[Q] Sprint store Update?

My wife took her Evo to the Sprint store to get a new cover for her phone. She set her phone on the counter to get a credit card when a Sprint employee grabbed her phone and hooked it up to a computer. Any ideas on what they did..... btw she is rooted and now recovery is acting all screwey. Thanks in advance.
Dave
How long was it on the computer?
They may have run SLATE on it, which goes through all settings in the device to check for errors and battery saving methods. It shouldn't screw with recovery but it WILL NOT work on a rooted device.
She said it was pretty quick. Maybe the saw the super user icon or whatever and didn't do it. But her recovery is acting weird.... when I hit reboot it goes to the cwm icon and I have to do a battery pull to power down. Not a big deal I can still backup, restore, flash etc but can't power down from recovery screen.

While the techs at the Sprint store were working on my phone, they had another phone that someone had left with them so they could move everything over to their new one (or something to that effect). There were nudie pictures that the dude had taken of his girlfriend, and instead of just looking past that & moving the files, they were actually looking at the photos. They told me that they get that a lot - people bring in their phones with dirty pictures of their girlfriend and ask them to move them over. I guess that's what you get for not knowing how to transfer files AND leaving said files with horny 20-something male employees. So you know they do look through people's phones instead of just doing their jobs.
But yeah, they shouldn't have just picked up the phone & started messing with it. Call Sprint and complain... if you complain enough you might get something out of it.

What would I say? They effed up my wifes rooted Evos custom recovery? Her phone has been acting a little dopey since they did whatever they did.
For your recovery issues... have you tried reflashing the recovery?
And I would definitely call up Sprint. You just tell them that your wife was in there, buying a case, and was getting her card to pay when they took her phone without asking or explanation and plugged it up. Tell them that buying a case is irrelevant to running tests on the phone and demand an explanation for it. Tell them that your phone is acting finicky and that it wasn't before they plugged it up. They'll have to explain for themselves or back into a deal. Oh how many times I have called, and they have offered something to make up for their mistakes....

Epics keep failing

Hello everyone. Before i get started let me just say this isnt a rant just a please help me post. Here is my situation:
My wife and i have been with sprint for 4 months now. Every month since we started our agreement with sprint we have had to have both our epics replaced so that makes a total of 8 epics that have come into our house hold. I have always been nice (never raised voice or cursed at) to the reps in the store and over the phone. How many replacements do i need before sprint switches us to a different model phone.
My wife and i need reliable phones as i am a paramedic and use phone at work and my wife is a stay at home mom with our cellphones being only form of communication. I have been googling for sprints policy and have come up with nothing. Thanks for any help.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
What exactly is failing?
To correct you, this is a rant.
You didn't ask a real question. Sprint makes next to no loss replacing your phone if you're under TEP insurance. They'll keep on replacing the phone with refurbished phones until:
A. They find a reason to charge you for the replacement
B. You ask to change phones, likely at a cost
C. The Epic is discontinued (not likely soon)
Refurbished isn't bad, but it's not new.
Moreso, you claim to have already found this answer yourself nearly 3 weeks ago:
MedicStuder said:
According to my local corp store, if i replace my phone 2 more times (already done 3 exchanges) then i will be able to switch to different device which if i have to exchange this epic 2 more times i am jumping ship to htc and if evo 3d is out then i am going to it.

Furthermore, without already being an HTC user, you clearly don't realize it is plagued with many similar problems, although without you mentioning a single problem, I can't compare it for you. However, only 4 months into a contract, Sprint will NOT be giving you a free replacement to the Evo, especially not the Evo 3D. You will be paying a premium to switch phones, and likely be forced into another 2 year extension on your plan.
Now, if you'd like to actually use this forum for what it's for, please, tell us what's so wrong with your phones that you have replaced 6 of them?
Double post.
My guess he is an EVO user just trying to stir up the Epic forums.
I brought my phone back last weekend because it died. It was the 3rd Epic that I had taken back from the beginning of my contract. I told them that I would like to switch to a different phone but they werent willing to do that. They said that if all 3 problems would have been within 6 months of one another then the manager could issue a different model of phone. Since my last brick wasn't within 6 months of the previous 2, they weren't willing to replace. So I believe that is their policy.
Very strange... I've been on the same Epic for nearly a year.. Must be a lot of duds out there or some are just very hard on a phone.
To the trolls that post I am not an evo user. Yes I did make that post to help someone that asked. I was told in store 5 phones in 6 months and on the phone I was told 3 phones. That's what is confusing me. Also research also instead of stalking me the evo at full retail is the same if not less then the epic. I am not even looking at the evo 3d because I know I will have to pay a significant difference.
The problems I am having for those that have posted and showed a willingness to help me. What happened is (happens on my epic and my wifes): apps started to force close then the touch screen stops working then the phone goes into a boot loop that I can't fix. I am on stock and not rooted. This is the first epic I haven't rooted. I am just confused from getting different stories. The phones have never had any external damage.

Why should I pay extra because their phone (back button no longer works) --less than six months old- is defective?
I've looked through several forums trying to find someone who has a user fix to restore use of my "back" button to no avail...tried the "enable haptic feedback to 3/4" suggestion and it worked once, but never again.

The phone has a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. Mail it back into Samsung and you'll get it fixed or replaced in about 10 days. If you need it back the same day/next day you have to have Sprint's insurance or pay them for the service.
I'm not a huge fan of Sprint or Samsung for that matter, but business is business and it seems fair enough to me.

[Q] Sprint Gnex problem...

I had a problem with my Sprint Gnex, and am wondering what I should do. Today, while I was at work, I was just playing some Draw Something (my boss plays it too; we were playing against each other, lol), I dropped my phone. However, thanks to my catlike reflexes, I was able to stick my leg out, cushioning the fall quite a bit. It landed face-up on a tile floor, but it didn't really hit hard at all. I was really worried about it (have had it for a week, lol). When I picked it up and turned on the screen, it was locked up. I didn't really think anything of it. I was just glad that the screen didn't get damaged or anything. However, when I pulled the battery and tried to restart, that's when things got kind of interesting.
It would get to the bootlogo and do absolutely NOTHING. I left it on the bootlogo for about 15 minutes before deciding that something was really up. I was able to get into recovery, but wiping cache and dalvik cache did not help. The only thing that helped was doing a complete data wipe and re-installing my ROM. I didn't download any new apps today, so I don't think it was because of one being malicious. I am just really worried that the drop could have damaged some of the memory. It has not happened again yet. Should I be worried about this at all? Obviously this is not normal. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this before.
It is doing OK now, and I have since restored using Titanium Backup. All of the apps that I had installed were re-installed, so it definitely isn't anything malicious. Any and all help would be appreciated.
Do you have insurance on the phone ? And maybe it did damage something I would try to exchange and let them now that it keeps turning off or something (don't mention that you dropped it tho)

Yeah, that's what I am kind of worried about. But do you think I should wait until it does it again (if it does)?

Take it in and exchange it for a new one. They have a 14-day return policy for a reason. This potential issue is always going to eat at you and take it from experience, you're never going to be able to duplicate the problem in the presence of a Sprint rep lol.

OK, there were some more symptoms now. I have ran some tests and it seems to happen about 15% of the time. This time, it would boot, but there would be no network connectivity, including Wifi. Plugging it into my computer, and the storage would not mount. I went into the storage option in the settings menu, and it said I had 0 bytes of storage.
Anyway, I took it into my local Sprint store, and they said that I had to take it to a location that had a tech so they could diagnose it. I took it to a different location. Well, 45 minutes later, here I am being told that all of his tests came back fine and that they could not replicate the problem. The refused to exchange it for a different one. They said that if it happens again, not to mess with it, and bring it back with it either bootlooping or showing no storage. Only THEN will they switch it out for me.
What kind of **** are they trying to pull? I am needing some more advise. They seem to be acting like I am making this up. I am ready to break someone's neck.

Well some sprint employees suck. I'm lucky I know that ones from service and another location as well I would have as to talk to the manager or call sprint retention about it
Here is the number for retentions
(877) 775-4886
Last year they helped me to get my upgrade 6 month before due time but I have to speak to a supervisor

I was talking to the manager. The other person I was talking to at the sales location was really nice about it, and he was going to exchange it there, but someone else stepped in and said that I should have went to the techs at the other location.
I will give that number a call and see what I can do. Thanks for the quick reply!
Glad I didn't get my phone from sprint... wire fly ftw. No detuctible... doesn't matter if I drop it.. they will replace it

My Note 2 got stolen yesterday

Yes unfortunately my note 2 got stolen at a party and even if I had some kind of tracking app installed it would be useless because they pulled the battery as soon as they took it.
This gave me an idea that some smart developer might take advantage of.
I propose we cook something into the rom's (like carrier IQ) that has the ability to track the location of that phone. Not tied to the mobile number or the sim card but to the phone itself. This way if somebody puts in a different sim the phone can still be tracked and controlled remotely. Also if they do a wipe of the phone, this will still be in there unless they switch roms.
Now this would be a service that is always available but is pay per use.
So if you never have to use it you never have to pay for it, but if your phone gets stolen you pay like $3-$5 to get the location of your phone emailed to you.
Just a thought.
I lost all hope on my phone coming back but I would really like not to experience this again in the future and I don't want anybody else to have to go through this either.
They already have this
Avast security with root features does just about everything

Cerberus does this too. Doesn't need root, and it even survives factory resets. Alerts you if somebody puts in an unauthorized sim.
Whether or not it would survive a custom rom flash, I don't know (probably wouldn't if the rom wipes /system maybe - I don't know where Cerberus stores itself).
BTW, that sucks that somebody stole your N2. =\
Iirc there's also the Plan B app that's meant to be installed from Google Play in those situations.

Bet you just left it lying around at a party....
Call up T-Mobile and have them blacklist the IMEI that way they end up with an expensive paperweight.

Yeah did that, also filed a police report. Also tried the plan b apps but those are mainly for lost phones and not stolen ones where the battery and sim is pulled right away.
I also looked into the cerberus app and I am very impressed, I wish I had this earlier

That sucks dude. Did you get insurance?
That sucks man. One of the main reasons why I switched to tmo from sprint. Since I have cheaper phones laying around, I just switch them out before I go anywhere I.e a bar etc. That way if I lose (or stolen) anything, itll be something I can live with.
I know with sprint I can swap the esns online but it doesnt work half the time and have to call care to fix it. Sim cards are ingenious.
I recommend everyone have some throw away phones for reasons like this. Or insurance.

Not sure about this one. So you just use your awesome phone when you are at home or at work? I would be lost if I left home without my note 2

Frankly speaking I have already lost 2 mobile phones..
It feels very odd, n weird...
The most horrifying thoughts are that people might go through all the data, video, pics that u tried so hard to keep a secret...
Seriously v need a better technology here...
Almost every mobile has gps, n now they also have Russian + American GPS installed in our latest mobiles, that really makes me think, every mobile can b theoretically tacked down, no matter watt.. but still v are at mercy of cops n operators...
Developers really need to focus on this idea n boost a total new era...
P.S
I too use tracking apps, but still they are limited.. u can find it if it was lost.. but how do u manage to located it in real time, when u living in high density of population?

I use aeGis(hoping I could send out the SMS in time to activate it) and on my lock screen I put a little message that says "This phone is equipped with Lojack. It is being tracked via GPS" just hoping that it deters theft.

Not to sound rude, but seriously how do you know that they pulled the battery and sim immediately? Did you find the battery door sitting on the ground or something? It's not exactly intuitive to pull the battery door on the Note 2.
IMHO I can't help but think that lookout and/or prey could have helped you, or at the very least a lock screen and encrypted FS to protect your data. Still I'm sorry that this happened to you. I know lookout will send a shout out when the battery gets low with its last know location. That along with a lock screen would give you a pretty decent chance of recovering the device. Maybe something to consider for the future.
A Lesson Learned
They have to put the battery in eventually. I use Lookout, and you can wipe all your data from the click of your computer. It also has a lot of locating features. I'm pretty sure I upgraded and paid a little for the app. But it is definitely worth it when it comes to the stuff you keep on your phones now a days. I don't like keeping a pin on mine or the pattern. Too much of a pain personally every time you want to go in your phone. On a side note, NEVER leave your note 2 lying around at a party. It should be in your hands dazzling ALL.
Just a thought, Any app will require a working internet connection before submitting any data/info to their servers.
The device can be easily switched on without sim, wiped and flashed and good to use.
But yes, these apps may help if the one who stole is not smart enough.

OMG reading all this got me paranoid and just gone ahead and purchased Cerberus and installed it on all my devices !!
So sorry to hear that your phone got stolen. I just hope you find it or somehow claim it on your insurance !! house car work or similar !!!
A coworker had the same thing happen to him at work a couple of years ago.
My group works in a limited access area with badge scanners on the door and cameras watching the doorway.
There were about 15 of us and we were all in a meeting. My coworker had left his phone on his desk. He remembered a few minutes into the meeting and went to grab it. It was gone.
It was clear none of us had taken it since we were all in the meeting together!
Reported it to security who quickly reviewed the CCTV video. A maintenance guy walked in, saw it laying on the desk, and grabbed it. Other cameras showed he immediately (not even 10 steps away) had pulled the battery. He walked straight outside to his vehicle and on the way tossed sim card in trash. I'm sure it was headed for a pawn shop at lunch that day.
My sister had her phone taken in a mall restroom. She was helping her young daughter in the stall and sat her phone on top of the toilet paper dispenser.
Of course she walked off without the phone. She washed up her hands and her daughter and literally got three steps out the door when she realized she didn't have the phone.
It was already gone and there was nobody else in the restroom!
I called the number immediately. Whoever took it answered and simply laughed and taunted us to come find them.
We ended up calling AT&T and having them disable the IMEI number. Never got the phone back.
