[Q] External_SD Mounting - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

If you have ever written anything to the External SD card, you'll notice it writes at half the speed that its supposed to. I came from an EVO 4g, same card, same formatting. I would get on average 4mbits a second write, but on the Galaxy S II, I'm getting half the speed. If I pull the card out of the phone and put it in my computer directly, it writes at 4mbits, and the internal partition for sdcard also writes at 4 mbits.
Would it be possible to mount external_sd as a different mount point (say sdcard_ext on the root)?
If anyone can manage to get it mounted as something different could you run a speed test on the card and see if it's quicker?
(I don't have much experience with unix Operating systems, but I'm learning.)

I asked the same question awhile back and didn't get an answer.
Hmmm....
I go to lunch with a few co-workers and this topic came up yesterday. Do you happen to work near the DC area? If so I'm pretty sure that i know who you are.

[Q] SDcard, read "As Disk" real slow

Ive been connecting my Evo via USB and then selecting "As Disk Drive" to access my SD card on the phone via the computer. The read and write speeds are horrendous this way. Copying a few ~1GB files from the card to the computer im getting 1MB/s.
When i take the card out and put in it an full SD adapter and use a card reader im getting 10MB/s. Why am i seeing a 10x performance outside the phone? Any way to fix this.
PS, this is the stock 8GB microSD card.
I think it has to do with the limit the phone has for reading/writing speed. Like my phone has the same problem if I attempt to copy over 1gb worth of songs for example the wait time be around 23-30 minutes for some reason but soon as i put the sd in a cardreader and plug it into my computer i can tranfer the 1gb file in 2.5minutes.
Can anyone else confirm this is a limitation of the phone? Its a pain to get to the SD card in the Evo, id hate to have to open it every time i need to copy a few things.
I had a problem like this once and I changed kernels and it seemed to be normal again.

I read this, looks like a temp fix that has to be applied over and over after restarts. Any easy way to apply a permanent fix?
Was on a savagedzen went back to the cm7 that came with rom. It mayhave been fixed in newer versions but I'm sticking with cm7 stock. Could have also just been a fluke

So i checked with adb using the following command
Code:
adb shell cat /sys/devices/virtual/bdi/179:0/read_ahead_kb
and it came back 128...so im having this issue even when its set at 128, any suggestions?
Using SD card speed tester i am getting 2 write and 6 read using stock 8GB class 2. This is accurate, however when transferring from phone to computer it is peaking around 1MB/s. Idk where this limitation exists as sticking the card into a reader im getting 10MB/s.
class 10 you can set up to 1024.. ..there's a zip on another thread to have this set always.... even after reboot....
i'm class 10.. 16gb, and i'm running the sd card tweak at 1024... i'm writing at 11./read 16

[Q] Internal Storage Question

I have a question, My HTC INC has an 8GB internal HD however when i look at my managing apps page is only shows that i have 768MB of storage, am i doing something wrong. Because i would really like to use the full 8GB HDD on the INC.
My phone is rooted so if there is something i can do to extend this please let me know thanks.
Thanks

There is no way to use the 8gb for apps. Throw some music on it and call it a day. A couple devs have looked into ut and realized it wasnt possible.

It sounds like you're looking at the wrong setting. The 748mb within "Manage Applications" of phone storage is specifically for your apps. "Internal Memory" aka "Emmc" is the 8GB of storage space. That is the same storage space that is presented once you plug your phone into a computer so that you can place music/vids/pics onto.
Are you having troubles accessing this via a computer or even from your phone? If so, what rom are you using as some roms may not allow access to emmc due to their port.

How do you or can it be done...the apps on the internal emmc that verizon installed on the phone for the tethering and hot spot stuff to work on your PC. Can it be removed somehow? Its not like I have not tried to remove them but to no avail....

8gb tablet only showing 5gb avail whiped

I don't know when this happened but my tablet is missing more then 3gb of avail memory (only shows 5.45gb total space which can't be right) Only thing i can remember that gave me the most trouble was trying to get ubuntu to work on the side with android using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=987740 only to find it was getting all sort of errors with the repositories so i ended up deleting it but still i know that seeing a few hundred meg to a gig is normal but a lil over 3gigs missing entirely something gotta be wrong x.x
Anyhelp out there since can't connect this to my mintbox netbook so i could check the partitions an make sure nothing is abnormal
Its totally normal, its what the Android team introduced with Honeycomb, universal storage, all 8GB a100s show 5 or so due to Android system etc.

well i feel like a dork now :x I have a captivate that has ICS on it an it shows 1.83gb used for internal an the remaining 13gb on the internal (16gb cappy) But sheesh lot of memory being used x.x
Ya just how it is. Thats why I have a 32gb sdcard in there for my videos and music. I leave the 5.45gb for apps only. And if I have games that require mass amount of data to be downloaded then I use GL to SD app so it stores those game data to sdcard. Root is required to use GL to SD though. With this setup I havent had the need to delete apps or even bloatware. I'm sure I have over 100 apps in mine.

GL to SD

Theres also a mod to make your SDcard as your internal. So basically the 5.45gb will act like an external drive while your SDcard will be your internal memory. But if you go this route might be good to have class4 card or higher.

I hear ya man thats why I'm still on HC till we get perm root. I have tried the SD swap but my 32 gb is almost full already so after I was all done I was left with about 2gb space. About the same if I just went with GL to SD so wasnt really worth going through all the trouble doing the sd swap. Plus I remove my SD card constantly so for my rom to be ran from it wouldn't be a good idea for me.
My 32 GB SD card is on its way, I never thought too much about music etc on my tablet seeing as my phone has 16 GB but now that I practically live with my tab, Daddy needs more space baby

Whhy no App2sdcard?

Is there no way to do this?
I honestly don't get the huge benefits of internal storage, I'm guessing its faster but serously how much does it matter that I pull my filesu p a few micro seconds if not seconds sooner than it does to have something portable and much more easily back up able?
The point of Apps2SD was when Android phones shipped with limited internal storage. Now that devices have around 16GB standard internal memory, it doesn't make any kind of sense to put apps on the external SD, especially since the nand chips are going to be faster than any MICROSD card you put in your phone.
The main reason it doesn't work with this device or any device that utilizes MTP over UMS is because instead of there being separate partitions for /data and /sdcard, they are basically all on one partition, you just have symlinks that all point to the same location.
MTP also allows you to connect your phone to your computer and access files on both your computer and phone at the same time without requiring you to unmount the internal storage.
So, in essence, what im trying to say is that the way things are progressing is only for the benefit of the average consumer. If you absolutely need to put your apps on the external SD card, you could always look into symlinks, but I haven't had any luck making them work consistently (but I haven't tried very hard).
Also, is there some particular reason you just absolutely dont want your apps on the internal memory?

1. MTP is def slower than default usb mass storage transfers
2. I have music on my external card, if I want to give my external sd to my sister for a long road trip, I can no longer do that (huge disadvantage)
3. mtp is kind of buggy, I mean I can't right click and accurately decipher the size of some folders
Those are the three disadvantages. Would you be able to resolve that? A lot of porgramsl ike spotify don't even give you the option to save files to sdcard...it is just default and internal now.

1. Our device does not support UMS by default (there is a hack for the external), but that wasn't even the point of this.
2. Yes you can. Just take the external out and hand it to her. But if you were to put your apps on your external then when you would take the external out, all your apps would be gone...so, still not seeing the point here.
3. Again, MTP was not the point of this. It is the fact that there is no real need to put apps on the SD card and none of these 3 reason had anything to do with that.

How to mount S3 as a Disk Drive

Is there any way to mount the S3 as a disk drive, like I could do on my HTC Evo.
The problem I am having as my new car only recognizes devices as mass storage, mounted as a disk drive. So when i plug it in for music it doesn not recognize the files.
My Galaxy is rooted so any if there is anyway to have an option to mount as a disk drive would be great.
Thanks

yeah I'm about to return this pos phone! Damn MTP bull**** I can't syncrhonize folders anymore to backup sd card! What bull****.. not only that so far wireless and mobile has been slower than my EVO 3D. I can't believe people can say this phone is better it has all sorts of issues that make it worse.
No USB Mass Storage
Data speeds seem horrible compared to EVO's
SG3 UMS I can't get to work either
I use Link2SD and every damn time I boot this phone up it goes through optimizing my 255 applications! What the heck? The more I use this phone the worse it seems not better!

Thats because there is no UMS, as mentioned earlier in your rant. However, MTD has worked pretty well for me, transfered 2000+ songs over using MediaMonkey. You can also transfer other file types in explorer or use ES File explorer to wirelessly transfer files between computers on a shared network. I suspect that the downside of UMS (having to unmount storage from the phone in order to connect it to a PC) may have caused enough problems to convince Sammy to give up on it altogether.

Sounds like a problem with Link2SD. This doesn't happen on my phone. My phone boots very quickly.
Curious, why are you moving apps anyway? Have you filled up the 16gig already or are you just so used to a phone with limited storage that you do it by habit? I ask because I've got about 80 apps on my phone including about 10 big apps, and have only used about 1.8 of the 12 gig internal storage available for apps.
I had limited space.. but Link2SD I can play with ROMS and do a wipe minus ext4 partition and than reinstall link2SD and relink all my apps.. no slow Titanium that locks up restore or other slow app backup restores.

Ahh.....lots of wiping and rom flashing. Could it be that reflashing roms and not restoring apps normally is the cause of the constant optimizing on boot? Something not getting properly linked? Going from odexed to deodexed roms?
Try this...
This is for the international version, but it might work (not really sure, I didn't read but I remember seeing this on the xda news page for the s3)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009
It basically makes your external sd available as usb mass storage.
Not working for the sprint s3 yet. I've been trying to get it to work from the first day I got the s3. I love this phone for most part... but Samsung not allowing ums on it with usb is the biggest screw up ever on this phone. It's like the Greek hero Achilles with his one major flaw...

Mount internal or copy full "image"
Hi you guys!
Been reading a lot on this topic and its odd but it seems noone has a solution to these issues.
I have a similar problem.
Used the internal storage for photos due the speed differences and made a factory reset.. Normaly no problems but i forgot the rescent photos and that dropbox only backs up while on WiFi.
And all this happnes during time at the hospital while my wife gives birth tomour wonderful daughter, AND I DELETED ALL THE PHOTOS!
So if anyone can serve me up with a solution to eigher mount the internal storage in some thing less complicated than rocket science or some way to rip the full memoryblocks to a image file to be able to "rescue" the photos that way by mounting that image.
So if any of you guys have any thing to recommend id love that. ; )
Ill keep digging the forum now...

I use ES File Mgr to move the jpg's to the DCIM/Camera folder and then use Dropbox to auto-synch to my PC. Anything in DCIM/Camera shows up in my Dropbox as soon as I get within range of a wifi hotspot. I think Google+ also syncs the pics.
