Hey
Ducking out of coursework for a minute to write this post.
I've constructed a little hack using fiinix's custom tile system. It's actually super simple, where it loads generated data in for tiles, pins them, and then upon loading, redirects the user to the app.

It's a little glitchy and could use some improvements, but I figured I'd get it out before the holiday season Feel free to share any thoughts, comments, bug reports, etc., and feel free to share themes here, too.
As for the source, I don't have it packaged up currently, but if anyone wants a look, let me know and I'll share it. Nothing fancy.

Delta Theme
Let me introduce you:
The Windows Phone 7 Delta Theme.
This Theme is based upon the Photographs of ... myself. So basicly I tried to bring several new aspects into the design of Windows Phone without ruining it with odd-looking glass effects etc.
Hope you like it!
Shameless-Advert: As stated above, Photographs are done by myself, check my portfolio at klaus-widraw.de.
To download the xap visit the theme thread.
Cheers.
It's really well put together, however there are a couple of things wrong
No Large Tiles (eg Calender)
No Email Tiles (Individual or Linked)
Some System Tiles are Image Less (eg Office)

Working on adding some system items and larger icons. Biggest issue here is email, which we can't seem to find a way to link to, as it's on a per-account basis, and we don't know the tokens for them
i have this program on my device but i cannot open any of the applications that i applied this theme to. Is this normal or have you not implemented this?

Just so I make sure I hear this right your app basiclly just launches itself right away? Also does this mean when I press the start button what is really happening is i am being directed to the homescreen and then the homescreen is directing me to your app?

LOL. that would be a homescreen in layers and I immediately thought of....
Shrek: [peels an onion] NO! Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers.
[walks off]
Donkey: Oh, you both have LAYERS. Oh. You know, not everybody like onions. What about cake? Everybody loves cake!
Shrek: I don't care what everyone else likes! Ogres are not like cakes.
Donkey: You know what ELSE everybody likes? Parfaits! Have you ever met a person, you say, "Let's get some parfait," they say, "Hell no, I don't like no parfait"? Parfaits are delicious!
Shrek: NO! You dense, irritating, miniature beast of burden! Ogres are like onions! End of story! Bye-bye! See ya later.
Donkey: Parfait's gotta be the most delicious thing on the whole damn planet!

Lmao ok I understand now. On a differnt note if I install this app and then unistall it will it remove all the custom tiles I have. Also is the xap file just the one theme you select.

Cheers for the reply, that's unfortunate regarding the Emails. Perhaps you should focus on linked inboxes. Just say the Themes only support fully linked email boxes.
The commands for linking should make it easier to locate the app (at least in my mind it would oO)

i am not sure what you mean? can you explain?
ok, just tried this but I am having problems. I can apply my own background image to the default theme, however when I click "Background Theme" and add an app from the market I get the app but as soon as I add one single app, I cannot apply a background image. When I get out of this window and back to main, nothing changed. Still shows the default. Shouldn't it now show the newly added app and the arrangement I made under "Background Theme"? It doesn't.
When I add an app from the main window and remove apps it works fine. I cannot reorder apps though. When I then open "Background theme" to reorder what I just added and apply a background, I only see the default list. I can add a background and it's applied to the main window, however the app order is from the default and my added apps are at the end of the list. I cannot re-arrange in the main window. Again, as soon as I add an app in "Background Theme" I cannot apply a background. None of the apps added on that level are reflected in the main window.
Several times now I added my apps in the main window and was able to apply a background, however the tiles and apps in the main window reverted back to default as soon as I applied the background. I give up for now.
I am clearly missing something.
Never mind, just saw this post by Joe on Jaxbot's site.
"As of now, you have to manually add them to the "customs.txt" file in order for them to become default when making a new theme."
first off, ten thousand thanks for this, and second of all, does anyone have a link to where I can download the wp7 default app tiles (just the tiles in .png form) in the many different color schemes of wp7? a google and bing search yielded nothing useful. Thanks again!
what about the homebrew live tiles?

Hey guys,
Here are some screenshots of the latest theme I have been working on. Feedback and suggestions/ideas are greatly appreciated.
***UPDATE 4/9/09***
Made a lot of fixes based on feedback received. Clock now matches the other icons/notifications, I personally like it a lot better! Application tray handle is now a thumbtack rather than the stapler in jello (stapler in jello is now delete handle). Added matching notification icons for most common stock apps (gmail, im, messaging, market, music, etc.) Cleaned up a weird looking button. Download link below!
***UPDATE 3/27/09***
Icon pack is available below. Included are all the application icons I made, as well as a blank icon background that you can paste your own icons into so they all match. Here is my process for doing that, though I'm not in any was saying that this is the only, or even the best, way to do it:
-Open both the icon you want and the "empty_sketchy" from the icon pack below in your favorite image editing program, GIMP or Photoshop, or whatever.
-You may need to resize the empty sketchy image, it works best if it is about twice as big as your icon you want to paste into it. There are two different sizes available in the zip file below, or it is a simple process to resize it to whatever size you need.
-Select and copy the icon you are working with, and then paste it into the empty_sketchy image. Center it, do any editing you need to do, etc. Then resize the entire thing to 48x48 and save it as a new file.
I'm still making a few changes and updates to the theme, and should release another update sometime this weekend.
***UPDATE 3/25/09***
Beta version now available, see link below. I still haven't quite finished everything I want to do with this theme, but I welcome ideas/suggestions/comments from anyone who wants to test it.
This theme is based on the US version of the TV show "The Office". It utilizes both things from the show, and typical office supplies.
Done:
custom boot screen
some notification icons
unlock screen
button backgrounds
clock
data network icons
phone signal, wifi, and battery icons
notification tray
all custom wallpapers
custom emoticons (from punkymoods.com)
To do:
remaining notification icons
delete tray handle
suggestions, etc

wow that would be awesome, i downloaded this wallpaper and resized it for the G1 and your icon set will look awesome on it
not sure about a new app tab I will be thinking about it and let you know if i think of something

See the first post for a link to a zip file with all the icons from this theme and instructions on how to make matching icons for other applications.
@JediMasterASD: That corkboard wallpaper is awesome. Maybe I should include that as one of the wallpaper gallery choices in the theme.

I don't think I love the clock either. I'm thinking maybe just a square clock like the kind in every office and schoolroom in the world would be better...what do you think?
Thanks again for the icons, i have already made a few more and am loving it! this is my current homescreen
I would actually like to get a copy of your theme without a graphic at all for the apps tab if possible, obviously you dont have to go changing it just for me though but my homescreen would be perfect then. Also a clock that more resembled something you would see in an office would be good too.
also something you could do is for the app tab and the notification is use weapons, becuase we all know how much dwight loves to hide weapons around the office!!!
bump for the update - see first post for changes and for new download link!!!
Hi Guys,
hope i'm somehow right here and you are - more or less - interested in my concept/idea.
I didn't really know about this forum, but some guy in an other forum suggest i should post it here. Well... i do, don't know...
Anyway. Since the day i knew that WP7 wouldn't have any multitasking from the start, i was pretty sure how i would let it look like.
And a few days ago i saw the pictures of version 7753 with this search-button on the rightside and i realized, that MS could actually use that space.
So i decided that it would be time to visualize my thoughts, so here they are:
htt p://img215.imageshack.us/img215/5137/mulasking.png
Instead of the search-button i'd put a taskbar-icon at that place. Pressing the icon drops the actual taskbar with all running programms. By pressing an icon you can directly go into the programm/app, by pressing and holding the icon you can close it. And with the little up-showing arrow you can close the taskbar.
I also made the mail-hub a "wide-hub" (don't know how to call it...). First of all, i love those "wide-hubs", but it would also be nice, to see who wrote your latest recieved email and whats the topic is.
And last but not least i would like to split the zune-functions. I use the zune-hub basicly for listing to my music for example, so it would be nice, to sort out that function and create a music-tile on the homescreen. This could also work with videos, podcasts etc.
And... while i was in the mood i made some customization-concepts. I tried to keep all basic Metro-elemnts and just improve some things.
The transparancy is not knew, i know that it was introduced in an earlier conecpt by someone else, but it's a nice idea and i'd just love to see something like that. Of course it only make sense, if you can put pictures or at least gradients (like in the mentioned concept) on your homescreeb background.
htt p://img846.imageshack.us/img846/1870/custom.png
At last i thought about some all-over-themes, where you can't individually customize your UI, but use themes. For exempale i love the zune-look with, which is why i even made three different zune-themes.
htt p://img202.imageshack.us/img202/7904/themesl.png
C&C is of course appreciated... in any way.
And sorry if i'm totaly wrong here.
Buddy i can not see the pictures...It says to login to imageshack! Please Upload them somewhere else or you can upload them here.
Regards.
No. I'm a first-time-poster so i can't put outgoing links into my posts. At least as long as i havn't made 8 posts. ;-)
But i put a [space] between the htt_p. Thats why those links won't work with simple copy-paste. You just have to erase that little space there and the links will work.
At least they do it for me and i also have no imageshack-account. o.0
I can see the pictures okay. It makes good use of the blank space below the "next screen" arrow in WP7.
Maybe this is why Microsoft left the area blank The only thing I do not like is the way you did the close menu. I would do it like the OS has the menu system - bottom. It would also give you more options.
Can you give me wallpaper on the second slide?
wow! i think your concept of multitasking is fantastic! i really like the way it looks and its a very smart use of the space on the right of the home screen!
Looks really good! But what if you want to switch while being in an app?
I can see the wide eMail icon come really soon! Hopefully ;-)

Ditto to your comment. I was wondering the same thing about switching within an app.
After all, having return to the home screen is what we CURRENTLY must do... There's no advantage in this unless you can call up the task manager from within any app.

well honestly i wouldn't have a problem with it. by the time multitasking comes out we will be so accustomed to returning to the home screen to do anything so it wouldn't be much of a hassle

This is just adding a second set of tiles to the homescreen. That's it. Unless there's some way to open that taskmanager up within any app- it's no different than what there currently exists.

yea i can see what you mean. opening the multitasking in an app would be nice. but it would not affect me to have to return to the home screen
Yeah, you're right. That was, was I was kinda missing.
But here is where the actual multitasking that MS showed before could come to work again. While you're in an app you press the back-button a litte bit longer. What than shows up could look like it does now in the "officel concept", or maybe like this...
htt p://img839.imageshack.us/img839/4185/multi2d.png
... just a quick idea.
I'll have a second thought about it.
And thanks for all the comments anyway. Made my at least think of something i obviously forgott.

Agreed.
I like the minimalist use of that side space, but I'm not sure a multi-tasking menu there is any improvement over the Mango demos. However, it might be a decent space for a "recent app" history bar, a toggle-able notification menu (a la Android/WebOS), or something along those lines.

i do have to say that is a fine idea. keeps all the tiles as the are on in the games area (like how if you enter multitasking on iOS the icons pop up with the same size as if they were on the main screen). so yea everything stays equal. both ideas are great! would be awesome to see microsoft impement one of them!
Very cool work! All of these are pretty realistic additions and I hope Microsoft eventually does something like this.
Your multitasking and customisation concepts look really good. I'd love to have multitasking like this.
After all, I would start the taskmanager by longpressing the Windows-button too.
Official concept says it will be longpressing the back-button but in my opinion you'll need the taskmanager more often than this useless voicecommand.
since ms is not yet done with their own concept of mt., i hope they are still open to other great suggestions such as this one. it maximizes the blank space on the right side, simple and neat. its a great concept. hope what they have presented in mwc will not be the final code for mt. they need to think of ways on how to simplify it and one good example is this one.

Must say that i like this, adds some flash while remaining simple in design. Found from here;
my x news
Not sure I like the tiles, but the app list is great. I do also like the background - when WP first came out I wanted custom backgrounds, but I've mellowed a bit in that sense and don't think a photo would work too well, but something like what's shown would.
looks very very nice! especially the rss feed and the app list
I dont like the unneccesary blue border chrome around the tiles. Metro embraces minimalism. I like the app list option but I use the search feature 90% of the time. Otherise I like the looks of it. I think semi transparent tiles with custom backgrounds would be nice.

I think he is saying more of, this is what should be possible. Different themes that change the colors and background to add some personality. I would love to see these kinds of features added. In my opinion, the biggest drawback on wp7 is the lack of personality. My phone should be exactly that. My phone. How i want it to look and feel. Some day i am sure there will be themes like this.
I like it. Dont know why, but it reminds me of a classy, expensive watch. Nice.

exactly my thoughts
The 1.5x2 tile with interactive elements is pretty sweet.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
I like the ideas. Very thoughtful.
I would also add that limiting the screen Real-estate used by the arrow to get to the programs list would be a great addition. There must be a better way. This would allow for larger tiles (width wise).
I'd like GREK's layouts and graphics, looks cool. I hope MS will implement (at least!) a custom background for the home screen!
Not sure in live tile,
but i like the app category concept.
I've seen this concept a couple months back, I like things better the way they're headed now.
I have a feeling that MS is going for a certain aesthetic with the home screen, and expecting them to get rid of the arrow and blank space on the right is wishful thinking.
Sent from my SGH-i917 using Board Express
Personally, I would like the ability to have some "favorites" pinned to the top of the App List screen. My most commonly used items are pinned to the Start screen, of course, and then my next most-used items are pinned to the top of the App List screen. The rest just fall under the App List itself. Does that make sense?
This is actually how I use Windows 7: most used stuff is pinned to the Taskbar, the next most used is pinned to my Start Menu, and the rest falls under the All Programs menus.
Just my $.02
Also, I like the collapsible App List groups. Clever.

It'd make even more sense in WP7. Your Live Tiles on your start screen. Your favorite apps under a favorites menu & the rest under the app list. It would clean up the start screen a lot. I have a lot of apps there right now just for easy access, but don't have live tile support.
I tend to keep my start screen tiles to a minimal few. By minimal I mean less than 40. This includes my marketplace and settings tiles as well as the dialer, people hub, picture hub, Zune, calendar, and messaging hub. All three of my email tiles are on the start screen (this may change with Mango/Linked inboxes).
Most of, if not all of, my other tiles are live tiles except IMDB. That being said, I wouldn't be opposed to a collapsible favorites area. But, I'm also good with things just as they are having the ability to search or use the jump list.
I suppose, however, that the start screen could get a little longer with the increase to 30 live tiles. I guess time will tell.
The concept looks nice. It's nice to watch and work with opposed to current dreadful WP7 look & feel.

Don't like the sense-esque weather or how busy it is as it'd muck up the UI but I like the concept, just too busy for metro.
Yup, a lot of these concepts don't take into account the amount of work the WP7 design team has put in to making the Metro UI uncluttered, simple and yet so stylish..
too busy and would look very out of place with the clean styling of the Metro UI
Looks like Android to me...
I love it - looks great and functional too.
Yes Metro UI is uncluttered, but unfortunately that means lists of white text on a black background...again and again. It's easy to use but boring to look at - reminds me of an old DOS terminal!

Did you seriously just copy "Notification Center" from iOS 5 right down to the name?
In any case, it looks good. But I'm not sure Microsoft wants to go the down-swipe route. Maybe swipe right to a pane to the left of the start screen?
Or even an extra button on the start screen to go to a Notification Hub. The App list has Search, the Home Screen can have the notification button with a number inside the bubble. I think taht would be elegant and the most unintrusive way to add it in.
In the Hub you can have Notifications and Reminders, however if you have to go to the Notification Hub to get reminders you're already somewhat failed there The OS supports Tasks and To-Dos with half-screen notifications/reminders. There's no need for that pane, IMO.
I am sort of pissed that Microsoft didn't make toasts a rolling 3D box like Apple did in iOS, though... They really need to add a bit more 3D to the OS. It's way way too flat IMO. Almost painstakingly so.
Your Skype thing bought an issue to mind. Why doesn't the message hub in Mango have a graphic or text to tell you your online status? After all, the phone does not log you on automatically when you [re]boot it up.
The music playback controls there are thoroughly unnecessary since they're easily accessible by just pressing a volume key. Waste of space.
I actually think the bubble (Notifications for Start, Search for App list in same spot) would be a better solution than a gesture. Some apps take over that top area and I'm not sure how the phone will handle it when you have UI elements up there that need to be tapped or dragged.
Looks like Android not Windows Phone!
Way to busy, Metro is an elegant yet minimalist UI. This concept looks like a breed between Android and Windows Mobile. With Nokia now contributing to the actual OS I believe the 3rd page concept found on Meego will/should make the jump (minus twitter and facebook since they're already in the People hub).

I much prefer your other concepts
I like the idea of a swipe down for a metro list of recent notifications though...that's a priceless idea and seems to flow properly within the windows 8 ecosystem
I think you are missing the point.
Ignore the background and additional applications etc. The notifications themselves look great and an idea I was thinking about.
If you don't code this up, I will

very wrong imo. A swipe down where? Lock screen? That's not very convenient, home screen? We swipe up and down to navigate the menu. The most viable option is a third table.

Nice concept, it's just not Windows Phone though...

@Peew971 : I didn't create it , one of our designers ( Yanko ) worked on the design
Hello fellow windows developer.
I guess I'm not a frequent poster but I need your help!
I need your feedback on my latest Windows 8 app: Kickstarter Browser. The thing is, I just got it release just to have a initial release but I need feedback on it. It's easy to feel satisfied with your app because you are familiar with it. I do have a general idea where I want to go with the app (adding twitter share, add favorites) but as far as GUI I'm not really sure. So any critic is welcome to just post here, perhaps even screenshots if there is anything specific you want to point out. If you have good things to say you can also review it windows 8 store. (Please do not post reviews/low stars saying it's bad, remember this is just my first release and I will improve it over the coming months using your feedback and then you can give a proper review ) If you give me feedback which I'll use to improve the app I will, if you want, add you to a thank you list in the App description.
As far as adding, login/pledging from the apps etc. there are no official Kickstarter API and the API I'm using is Very restricted.
Anyway, please give me feedback and I will be very thankful.

hmm, well I tried to install your app but the MS store is insisting that I am not connected to the internet, it worked fine 2 days ago on the same connection and I am clearly on the internet right now. I'll have to takes its suggestion of trying again later.
Picture looks alright but I cant see myself using the app if I'm honest, I just dont browse kickstarter. If I can get it to download I will pop back with something more useful to you

Thank you for trying and thank you for giving me you 2 cents on the screenshot, hopefully you will be able to download it soon. I am at hard work to bring another release of this app within two-three weeks, but I do hope some more people would give me their opinions.
Update
I've made an update for this app. Though I have not received a single piece of feedback.
This time I bring the ability to see videos in the app and to search through descriptions of projects to find specific words (This is something the normal kickstarter.com website cannot do). I also updated to GUI to look much better and fixed bugs, you can find the app update here:
Please download, try it and give me some feedback.
Thanks.
Nice! Just gonna give some friendly feedback here: first, it would be nice to have the spotlight words in the top-left clickable, so I could select technology or whatever. Second, the tiles for each result could use a little more modern. By this I mean separate each tile a little, get rid of the rounded effect, and maybe make the background for each tile the project picture. Other than that, maybe some more background colors on the app would help. But really, nice work!
Thanks

Wow, thank you. It was very observant of you to notice the kind of "Rounded effect". I have taken your advises into consideration for my next release. I will be releasing a Halloween update within the next few days and will post here when it is certified and live. Thank you SO MUCH. You are the first to give me some suggestions, and I've asked for help on quite a few forums.
The next update will have many new features I hope you all will enjoy.
Update!
Well, you could say I really buckled up last night and started my code, because here is the halloween update!
I focused on customization and user experience this time. The change log follows:
-Changes in version 1.2.0-
Big GUI update
Multitask support added (view video while using other apps)
Added tool tips
Added FAQ to project description
Significantly improved search times when searching through descriptions (by 20 percent)
Search now list projects as they are found (not when search is done)
Added settings for spotlight
- It's now possible to add/remove and enable/disable individual spotlight categories (found under settings)
Added the possibility to to favorite projects
Added favorite page (accessed by swiping down from top or right click the top of the screen)
Removed crash bug when no internet connection
Anyway I hope you all will download it and try it (and tell me what you think). I will be taking a one week break from coding Kickstarter Browser to recharge my batteries and get inspired to do some more work.
Update
I hate how it feels like I'm spamming/bumping my own thread but I just want to keep you guys updated and hopefully get more feedback from you guys!
So I've just got the post-Halloween update certified. Change log:
Revamped start screen
Added playback controls (Play, stop, mute, video time bar)
Added video full screen playback
Added sorting projects in search
Added backgrounds
Added browsing categories in search screen/start screen
Squashed bugs
So this is the first update based on feedback from users and feedback I've asked for from various forums. One point of feedback was really important. The user felt that when you first start the app you are welcomed with a screen with a huge gap in the middle. So I made the middle part dedicated for browsing through categories and all the searching should be done through the search screen. Another user told me that the app doesn't bring anything new to the table in terms of searching and finding, so I added more search options. The third big feedback I got was that the app was boring, colorless and not nice to look at, so I reworked the layouts and made it possible for the user to change background color/add background image. The last feedback I did take into consideration for this update was that the search screen was a bit confusing and that the video playback lacked features, so I rearranged the search screen a bit and added video playback features (it now has play, stop, mute, full screen and a timeline)
So you see, I use the feedback I get to make the app better, please keep it coming and I will possibly implement it.
Thanks
Live tile update
I guess you all know what this post mean by now.
I've just release update 1.2.5. Inspired by another app this update brings the ability to create live tiles of projects to have them on the system's start menu screen and keep track of projects. Change log:
Added more backgrounds
Added ability to create live tiles of projects
Added all subcategories to browsing
Refined browsing
Fixed bugs
Added Help/FAQ to top appbar
Moved settings to top appbar
Thanks
