My speaker used to be perfect then degraded to only playing perfect at half volume and no degraded to even a little volume being total crap. It sounds all scrambly and I don't seem to have the correct word for it right now. Anyone know of a solution or why this is happening?

ur speaker is most likely shot...this might help u so that u dont have to take it to a sprint store to get it fix

Yep, your speaker is blown. You can get them on ebay for a few bucks if you are comfortable replacing it yourself.
Might be the same problem i have, metal dust and shavings. I work construction and this is a common problem for me. Sounds real scratchy, blown. Take out the speaker and you can fix it by rubbing a strong earth magnet on it. Most ppl will say just replace it while you have it out, but if this is the problem then it'll just happen again.

I do woodworking but I don't think it could be that. I'm gonna buy a new speaker since the earth magnet actually costs more

looks like my speaker on my evo is pretty much dead (it's my fault i was dremeling some steel for a good 2-3 hours with my phone next to me listening to music so i could drown out the sound).
Are there any places that carry JUST the speaker at this point?
Huh, didn't realize that you could burn out a speaker by doing that.
At this point, you can try taking it into a Sprint store that has a repair facility and see if they can either sell you the part or replace it. I don't think they have many, if any, parts available yet though. I tried to get just a replacement battery cover and I was out of luck.
Maybe it's a warranty issue instead?
I would ***** and say warranty.

Hi this is an easy fix all you need is a really strong magnet (large rare earth) and place on outside of speaker. Move it around and tap on it a bit. Do it to the front and back speaker. I am am a mechanic and carry my phone everywhere. The magnet pulls the metal off of the weaker speaker magnet pretty easy. Works perfect for me and I have to do it twice a weak. I use a 3/4 x 1 cylinder magnet.

i've done this already, when i took the speaker out, the speaker was no longer smooth. It had a LOT of marks on it (dented looking) which looks out of place. the speaker sounds very off..
ok i called a local sprint repair facility and they are ordering me a new one (out of my 30 day warranty but they looked it up and said it should be ok still). Unfortunately i have a white evo, but we'll see. I don't mind the black one that much.
Looks like this is a common issue on some phones according to the guy, he didn't even ask me anything other than does the speaker sound distorted/blown out.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine, and I told him to deal with it for now or risk getting a phone with 2.2 on it and losing root. He decided his speaker was more important and ended up getting a phone with 2.2 and now is crying about root every day. If your phone is rooted, keep this in mind.
I am rooted but at this point the speaker phone is more important. honestly I do not use much of anything other than titanium. I will likely miss tether though but since I only use it once in a blue moon it will be fine.

The 30 day period is only for a replacement because of a defect or return because you're unsatisfied with the phone for any reason. It was nice of Sprint to still honor it however and get you the part.
The EVO still has a 1 year warranty from HTC; this blown speaker would likely be considered a manufacturers defect, in which case even after 30 days you could go through HTC to get a repair.
Anyone ever find anywhere to buy a replacement speaker? Not the back one, but the earpiece one....?
Mine has "52c10137db" assuming thats a part number. I need a new one mines crackly and I'd rather just fix it myself.
So I just got back from a camping trip and I turned my phone on and the speaker sounds horrible. It sounds like it might be blown or have debris in it. My phone sat in my hot car all weekend so my two questions are
Did the heat mes up my speaker?
How can I clean debris out of the speaker?
I rarely use the speaker to listen to music so it seems pretty weird that it is blown. Any advice would be great!

the speaker has a mesh over it, its very unlikely they are debris on the driver. it is likely that the sealant used to hold the cone to the coil, or surround melted. theres no way to fix this short of replacing it. if it did indeed melt, things would sound muffled and muddy.

replacing it isn't a big deal, read my thread. It's a 10 dollar quick, easy, and 5 minute process. The hardest part is undoing the screws on the back. Easy as pie. Way easier than it sounds, and it sounds easy. Don't worry about it, just replace it.

Hmm when people say its easy, you sometimes have to worry. It may be easy to you, but maybe he doesn't have the precision hand or nerves of steel it takes if you accidently poke a hole in something while your doing it. I have never taken my dinc apart, but if I did, I would be extremely careful. I followed an online tutorial on how to replace an ipod battery once and I mutilated that case. It never fit right after that... Just be careful, if you decide to do this and take your time, don't force stuff appart!
Hi everyone.
I accidentally dropped my phone as I was getting out of my car (damn that new coat with all it's pockets!).
Now I noticed that at full volume, the speaker is really hard to understand, and at about 1/3 volume it becomes clearer- but the person becomes harder to hear in terms of loudness.
At full volume it's as though the person on the other side is talking with their lips on the mic and really loudly.
Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the speaker, or what could have caused this? I am familiar with taking the phone apart. I've done it a number of times, but I'm just wondering if it even makes sense to try at this point.
thnx
EDIT: I found this.
http://www.repairsuniverse.com/htc-desire-z-earpiece-speaker-replacement.html
anyone install one of these? requires desoldering, I guess?
I dont think it requires anything really besides opening. I believe that when I swapped my spring the speaker is on the back side of the phone and the entire motherboard is seperate on front side.
thanks scott.
you're correct. no soldering. it has two spring-bent type contacts and it looks like there is a metal bracket around the speaker that has 4 indentations to hold the speaker down over 4 small cavities in the speaker body.
should be easy.
and i found it for 2 bucks to boot!
Yea, replacing the speaker is very easy. First take off the back (4 screws) and then I think there is one more screw to get the speaker loose. But I don't remember exactly. Might be none.
When pressing keys especially I have recently noticed a weird clicking noise coming from the top of the phone. I am really getting worried about this phone because I pretty much get all OCD when it comes to tech especially mobile phones. This is supposed to be the best phone of 2014 yet both my power and volume rockers are quite loose and this issue with the vibration noise now ... It would be reassuring to know that other people have this same thing and its not just a faulty device... Also just 1 more thing, I have my m8 in a hard protective case and I dropped it onto cement 1m (3ft) below me.. no external damage at all but I'm wondering whether there could be internal damage? Thanks for any replies :good:

The vibrator is held in place in the housing with the help of adhesive. The shock must've dislodged the vibrator, causing the clicking sounds.. I'd say get it replaced/repaired asap, before the vibrator hits anything and gets damaged. I might be wrong, but you're gonna have to send it in anyways so
Is it worth return?
Are you sure it's worth returning ? It's nothing major, I can only hear it when there is complete silence in the room. The phone was in a case and it didn't fall far so I don't think that would be the reason but still. If I did want to return it though, how long would that take ? I'm in Australia btw and bought it online.
Sure?

I'm not sure about your return policy, but why not return it? If you can now, and somewhere down the line, if it gets worse, and if you don't have the option to return then, you'll be kicking yourself..
same here !!

i have the same issue , its as if there is something loose inside the phone body which crackles whenever the phone vibrates :/
It's not broken, it's a feature. Really.
Look in Settings -> Sounds -> System. Untick "Touch Sounds". That should fix it.
The earpiece on wife's 5x has stopped working, so she has to use speakerphone for calls.
I've tested the speaker using this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blackflame.internalspeakertester - no sound from it at all.
Before I change the speaker module, this isn't a common fault is it?
I'm pretty certain it's not software, so not going to bother hard resetting.
Also, how difficult is replacing the speaker module? iFixit teardown looks pretty easy, and the part is super cheap, except the part is located underneath everything else!

Mine started crackling after a screen replacement, i filed a complaint and they said they could fix it, but it would take 2 or 3 weeks. I told them **** off.
Yesterday I tried fixing it myself, took the module out, and realized it was missing the cushion. So I placed a bit of microphone sponge on it and it sounds a bit better, but not 100%. Im gonna take it apart again today and try something else.
Regardless, its easy to take the earpiece out, you dont have to take out the other components, just the back cover and the screw on cover with the fp sensor.

Awesome. Thanks very much for doing that - will get the part ordered and get it changed!
I had the same situation after replacing the screen and frame. I swapped all the components and the speaker phone worked but not the earpiece. I took it apart and messed around with the leads and got it to work, but strangely, if the 4 screws on the bottom side of the phone are too tight only the speaker phone works...if I remove that portion of plastic altogether only the earpiece speaker works...and if I put that plastic piece on, but keep the screws somewhat loose, both speakers seem to work as intended. The only problem is, I don't know how long it will work properly in this precarious condition. Any clue as to what's happening?
@prattleon: this is caused by improper mounting of the audio jack. It has to be glued to the frame and in a perfect contact with the mother board.
