[Q] Initial Memory for GSM GN - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So I don't know if you guys have a problem with this, too, but I thought I might post a poll of how much internal storage they start with on their fresh Galaxy Nexus (GSM).
When I opened up my Galaxy Nexus, it started out with 13.33 GB worth of available storage, means that the ICS firmware is taking up 2.67 GB.
I never asked for 13.33 GB worth of storage out of the box, I asked for something close to 16GB when I bought it. I don't like the fact that I feel cheated and the numbers were misrepresented. I KNOW I KNOW some of you will play Le Googly Devil's advocate and say, "Well obviously, the 16GB includes the Ice Cream Sandwich that comes with it, so it would obviously take up some space."
I KNOW I KNOW, but I want you guys to realize that operating systems like linux didn't take up 2.67GB way back when. But now, 2.67GB..? Now that's crazy OS talk right there. I like to have more storage please.
This is a very inconspicuous marketing tactic, using our own money, our own internal storage to pretty up an operating system, called ICS, worth 2.67GB of data.
I remember way back when...
So anyways, how much memory do you guys start at?

if u remember way back.. then go get urself some old device with cupcake, donut or eclair. i m pretty sure they wont take up to 2gb of ur internal memory
if u want newest os, suck it up dude.
if u want more memory, get 32gb with lte.
if u dont have lte, but u want 32gb, well too bad, get 32gb with lte anyway and suck it up~~

I'm pretty sure most of the unavailable space is allocated for dalvik-cache.

As Chirality comments, a good chunk is definitely taken up by the dalvik-cache. You could get rid of that (don't ask how) and get closer to your 16GB, but then you'd end up with a really slow device.
btw, you're forgetting the marketing 16GB vs actual 16GB space. As every digital storage manufacturer represents 16GB as 16,000MB = 16GB, whereas in reality its only 15.6GB, that makes it 2.27GB for ICS by your calculations.
And not to mention your comparison to linux? This is Android, it only uses the linux kernel. But besides that, it's very different from a linux distribution, it's more like a JVM wrapped onto a linux kernel.
and finally.. is it really that big of a deal? If it is.. then as king23adrianc says, get the 32GB version, OR wait for an ICS phone that comes with an SD card. I understand that for some people, they need a lot of space. I can understand that. But then I can't understand why you would purchase a device limited with only 16GB knowing that you need more.

Yeah, suck it up.
It is a new OS, new requirements.
I don't know if you can flash Android version 1.0 to get more space.
Duh...

Is it just me, or Windows Mobile 7 will SUCK big time? It seems to me, as far as i've been reading and searching the web that microsoft is following apples way with the iphone on the new upcoming os. Where have they lost their head? ???
I don't know about you folks, but in the near future i will be buying myself an HD2 with good old WM 6.x.x. Makes sense to me! spending so much on a phone, at least it has to let me copy and paste at my own will!
MS gone Apple
Looks like WinMo7 is MS's attempt to copy everything that make the iPhone suck. If I wanted an iPhone, I would have bought an iPhone. My next one will probably be an Android.
no as time goes on i start to think that more & more but im sure as soon as i see a new video on it im prolly gonna want it again
I'm glad to read this, that at least someone has the same thoughts as mine. I really don't think WP7 will be as successful as Android OS, BB OS or even iPhone OS.
FYI it appears copy and paste will be in the RTM or most likely added shortly after.
To be fair Microsoft is trying to cater to a less advanced audience then the typical XDA user, so in that sense it may do well. From the XDA perspective as long as it gets rooted/jailbreaked/whatever, that isn't terribly different then flashing a HSPL and a custom rom. My only dislike is the lack of storage card, hopefully they will let up on this issue. The SDK is only managed code, this makes programs in general less dangerous and quicker to develop. On the other hand you loose the nitty gritty features XDA users love. Though I imagine having the phone rooted makes both of those points moot. At least you are not one of the people yammering how they are jumping ship to xxxxxx. The OS isn't RTM yet and the gurus haven't touched let a lone disabled all the sandboxing on any WMS7 phones. I somehow doubt the current windows mobile users on here griping are using a stock rom.
Theres no way WP7S will suck! This thread is pretty much useless pointing out on things which others have pointed out in 100 of such threads!

well at the moment Android isn't very wide-spread! Windows Mobile still got a bigger marketshare. But Google is great in making people use their products so we'll see in two years who will be at the top: WP7 or Android.
iPhone what?
The major issue i see with WP7S is no removable storage.
When the system gets taken apart, all of the other features we are missing (task manager, file system access, multitasking etc) will get put back in by XDA.
But... no removable storage is a biggie...
The problem is... there will be no manufacturers making WP7S devices that have micro sd card slots. Why would they?

Windows Mobile 7 did suck, that's why it got dropped for Windows Phone 7 Series
I believe eventually, Blackberry, iPhone and WP7 will be the top smartphone OS (in US) with Android going the way of WM with a small marketshare. Perhaps Android will catch WM one day now that WM was sent to pasture.
Any smartphone without a great ecosystem and super friendly OS will fail to compete with the "big boys"
I prefer not having my storage removable. I never take the card out of the phone anyway, and I hate having to decide where to put everything.
Do I put stuff on the card to preserve memory? Or in memory for speed?
If a phone ships with 8, 16 or 32GB of onboard memory, such concerns become moot, it's all one big lump of storage. This is probably why Microsoft haven't added the functionality to the Marketplace to put software onto the card - there won't BE a card in WP7S. Not only that, developers will be able to rely on the fact there'll be plenty of storage available for their games or whatever. Currently, as cards are optional, the only thing they can rely on is a couple hundred megs of RAM and that's it. So in the end I think this decision had to be made. Your average punter hates having to splash out on a memory card after spending £400-500 on a phone with virtually no storage. It is pretty silly. It would be like purchasing a laptop without a hard drive.
In any case, thus far at least, card storage capacities have not outstripped the onboard memory size of phones such as the iPhone. iPhone has 32GB on board, twice what my HD2 has.
Honestly, how many ordinary users do you think really want to faff around with memory cards? It's been nothing but a hassle for me.

This is true... your average punter would think that removable storage is nothing but extra hassle.
However... when your phone goes tits up and you lose all of your files because you didnt have a backup, the advantage of removable storage becomes abundantly clear.
I for one would rather simply take my micro sd card out of the phone and place it directly into another device to get instantly up and running again.
Yes but it won't be an advantage with WP7 anyway as it won't have file system access and you won't be able to take programs installed on that card from one phone and simply plug it into another. So in WP7 as it is now storage cards are nothing but a hassle.

Ah... but you sort of missed the point of my first post....
what i am saying is.... eventually, WP7S will be taken apart and file system access would be possible. So would installing apps outside of the microsoft marketplace.
Therefore... removable storage becomes extremely useful once more,... but there would be no devices running wp7s that actually have micro sd slots.
Forget looking at wp7s as it is now (shockingly bad)... im looking towards the future somewhat...
I hope they put 32 and 64gb chips in phones and not all go with the 8gb minimum.

No doubt about it, but you can't expect MS to cater to that, can you? Me, I will miss SD card if I do switch to WP7, but built-in flash has its benefits as well, it's faster, actually. I need to be able to copy files there though.

You should still be able to files to and from wp7s although it does not use any storage card. I do that with iPhone now and there's no reason to think it will be any different here.
You can do it on the iPhone after jailbreaking. Without it you can only transfer certain types via sync interfaces. And then you cannot choose which application will use those files.

how much mb does earth and legend take up on your device

how much mb does earth and legend take up on your device i can only can bring it down to 40 something mb but thats still too much for me
i think that's 60 mb on your internal storage.
on sd card
my earth and legend takes 43,41mb on my sd card, but i dont know how much it take in the phones storage, sorry i am a newbi with android but i love it
Too ****ing much. 43.41MB on mine, and I've seen it get as drastic as 70+MB on handsets that have not been rooted or modified to use the setInstallLocation 2 trick. The average user isn't gonna know how to do that, and 43MB is still insane.
I generally just lost a lot of respect for Dvide here. They stated that it'd work with the Xperia PLAY touchpads and it not only did that turn out not to be the case, but they also made one of the most brain-dead decision any app developer could - a huge data install straight to phone storage instead of SD.
So what we end up with is a really, really high priced game that doesn't follow up on what it claimed to... and isn't even ideal to keep installed on your device.
They've done like 5 updates too without addressing any of these problems... and have completely stopped responding to any users that ask about it... oh, but they can update to add 'new pets' and **** -_- Personally, I've decided to keep it uninstalled until they get their **** together... if I could, I'd have refunded it too.

Petition For Memory Cards on Future Nexus Devices

As the title says, I've started a petition to Google to include memory card slots on future nexus devices and to encourage other manufactures to do the same. Please check it out and sign the petition.
Also, if a wise and powerful mod saw fit, I think this could be worth a sticky.

Not trying to be negative but what's ur biggest gripe not having this option?I get no mass storage which sucks and if ur phone takes a dump ur outta luck however its not bothered me to the point of wanting to make them change it.really its like buying a car if you don't like one pick another.well that's just my 2 cents anyways
but...but...but...having no SD is faster and cheaper...

My biggest problem is that I just don't see the reason not to have it. Other than the iPhone, pretty much every smartphone has had some kind of memory slot for years until recently. Having it is cheap and takes up very little space. Why limit users? Why not allow them flexibility?

Why complicate things with an extra slot? Why slow things down with external storage? Why? It's not only easier for developers, but for consumers too. You never have to worry...its just there. You don't have to go "Well, VZW only gave me a 2GB SD lets go spend another $30 on a 64GB"...its just there and most consumers need that cause most consumers are, sorry, dumb.

I'm sorry, but that post is just dumb. (Not you, your post.) How can it complicate things?(*That's a dumb statement.*) I think even the older generation knows what a sdcard is and how to use it in a mobile device, camera, etc.. so I know the younger generation knows. What can be complicated to some, is hooking up your phone up to the computer and browsing through all of those folders trying to find where their pictures are saved. (*Most wouldn't look in the DCIM folder.*) Why slow things down? I spent an extra hour or so at the Verizon store waiting for them to transfer all of my pics, songs, etc...off of my sdcard, when it could have taken me 2 minutes to the transfer the sdcard from my old phone to this one. (*Again, dumb statement.*) I guarantee you most people are using the same 16/32 sdcard they've had from a previous phone and they either sell or put the new one they get with a new phone away for storage. Not to mention how APPS2SD has saved plenty of people space on their internal memory and whatever other benefits that comes from that. Sorry, but I just can't let you call me a dumb consumer because I want options. If you ask me, a dumb consumer is one who doesn't want more options.
Guys, there really is no reason to debate or argue this. Either you support it or you don't. If you do, sign the petition, like the page, and post something positive.
If you don't, please just leave well enough alone (like I said in the original post).
You could just buy a phone that does have an SD card slot. They don't have a gun to your head. Google is moving away from expandable storage.
I don't think Google plan to add micro SD cards in the future as we head towards a cloud based storage system in the future, so if you want an SD card, you'll most likely have to buy a non nexus device, this rant won't do anything much
I don't know if it's that people don't read or if my expectations are just to high. *sigh*
If anyone has anything positive to say, please say it.
No negativity here just opinion. I think manufactures should just include more built in storage. Flash memory is way faster than sdcards and I think that if there more of it, space would stop being an issue.

The only problem with this is that, the more the storage, the more the price of the phone. Imagine how much a 64 GB phone or tablet is going to be. I'm pretty sure at some point buying a 64GB sdcard would be cheaper. Plus, when you spend more money on that new 64 GB device that you want, now you have to spend all of that time saving it to the cloud or transferring it from the old device to the new one. Now when your space in the clouds begin to get to full, you now have to spend a monthly/yearly fee for more space. Sorry, but I don't see the benefits.

Screw memory cards, where is my dvd-rw nexus??

[Q] 16GB or 32GB

After ATT has screwed me (took away my $10/mo media net unlimited data for my iphone4), I've decided to switch to Sprint and switch to the GS3, since who knows when the iphone5 will be jailbroken. Plus I really want to play with Android. That said, Amazon Wireless has the 16gb version for $0.01 and the 32gb version for $49.99. So, is double the amount of space worth $50? I have 100gb google drive thanks to a Chromebook so I doubt I'll have any real issues.
Also, are there any issues that would discourage getting a 32gb model (e.g. Certain awesome custom roms only work on 16gb version, etc.)?
Thanks.

I haven't heard of any issues with the 32gb. I have a 16GB with a 16gb sd card. No issues.. I don't keep alot on my phone either way.. You'll love the S3 tho.As for roms, Search a little,, read a few post.. You'll find a good fit for you! Most of all, welcome to the family!
If I had a choice I would get the 32 gb version, I'm a storage space junkie. The 16 gb is more widespread so I see more development related to that. It does have a card slot and 64 gb cards work in it. I have only had this phone for about a month and have only run the stock rooted rom, so I'm not sure if the size difference matters with roms or not. I'm sure someone else will chime in here and help though. Welcome aboard!

Are the 16 and 32 so different that they are developed separately?
Also, OP, I and many others paid $50 for the 16GB about 3 weeks ago, which was a steal. I would drop $50 for a 32GB without thinking twice.

I don't think they are. Extra space is only difference.. And if i coulda got it i would have. I just don't need that much space tho lol.
I have the 16 gb with 32 sd card more than enough space .I got just about every gameloft game and still have room on my card plus the internal either way you go your still good because a 64 gig card is always an option.

Well then, I'll definitely spend the extra 50 on the 32 gig version for me. My mother and father are also on my plan, and they will each be getting a gs3, but the 16gb version. I probably won't put any custom roms on theirs, but I might just go ahead and root them so I can just email them .apk files of apps and they can install them.

Go ahead with the 32Go, do not choose 16 !
If you choose 16, you will only have 11 Go of free memory, which is very small ! Install a GPS software with multiple countries maps, and a big game like Real Racing 2, and you will then loose half of your free memory ... And if you want to install apps on the SD card, there will be no perfect solution to do this.
See my post here :

i would totally go with the 32gb for that price. i do admit i am a space junkie. but having the extra space is always convenient. i've tried blazer rom and it was quite good. i moved over to freegs3 only because i wanted to try it out and then became addicted to it. haha. good luck!
Spend the extra money. It's worth it. I'm close to maxing my memory out. It's only 50 bucks.

Will the dual-partition bring anything extra cool once the dev community gets it?

Will the dual-partition bring anything extra cool once TWRP is released and the Dev community figures things out?
I mean, Google put it on the phone for a good reason for their needs.
Just kinda wondering if it'll bring anything super cool mod-wise or if it's just another thing to annoy the devs?
I'm guessing it's not enough space to dual-boot on the fly. I haven't looked at the partition sizes or anything yet.
But maybe it can be used for something kinda neat at some point down the road.
Good question!
The dual partitions are booth supposed to be the same size as they both carry the OS. One partition is active and the other lays dormant until an update is pushed The update is applied to the dormant partition then the phone should boot from that and then copy the new system to the old location. On the fly OTA's.
Now thats what I read about the Chrome Books. Not 100% sure about Pixel but I could not imagine it being that much different. And if the partition sizes are the same then dual boot is possibly feasible.
Thats just my two unscientific cents. People smarter than me will have to chime in on this...
Sweet. Did not realize A & B were the same size.
I see dual-boot goodness in our future.
Stock ROM + Janky modded to ras ROM.
Thanks for chiming in, Scott.
If the partitions are the same size does that mean that the phone is essentially twice the capacity? If reformatted, could the 32gb version then be 64gb? I was thinking about this the other day

Nope on the 32 = 64GB.
But if you look at how much your system is currently using, that's what you'll probably still get if some wizard came along and combined A & B.

Umm... No.
To better answer that, here is the logic.
Let's say you were at 97% full due to many videos & MP3's, etc.
Then Google rolled along an update... that could possibly push you to 100% full and crash your phone.
I work VMware and have seen Thin Provisioning gone waaaaaay bad.
So my guess is what you see used by System right now, is exactly what System will look like if both A & B have a ROM on them or A & B are combined.
My 32GB Pixel for example:

Yes, I should have bought the 128GB and WOULD have if it were not on 60 day backorder at the time.
I figured I'd just return my 32GB and get a 128GB after a couple weeks but that dream is over.
Ahhh, I was correct in my logic...

This may be the first device to dual boot from the factory!

Actually to get more space you would have to remove either A or B. And then reformat the device to include the removed partition into the storage partition. Not something I would recommend trying AT ALL! Plus you are only talking like 5 Gigs extra space... If thats a deciding factor time to start using the cloud
Hmm... removing a B slot just to gain like 2.5-3GB... nah.
Although, that is a lot of MP3's.
Maybe.
Good (or terrible lol) idea.
