Lets clear this up once and for all. Can anyone confirm the EG31 baseband is an official Samsung release? In other words, did you either get EG31 without flashing it yourself or are you a Sprint tech who has flashed it on someone's phone in an official way?
Please, no hearsay confirmation (i.e. my friend's cousin's sister called a sprint store and they said they flash EG31), I want a first hand account from someone who has had Sprint flash it on them or someone with Sprint who has flashed it in an official manner.
I have been looking and haven't been able to find anyone.
according to a email I got from sammy, EG30 is official and the only supported version.

I received confirmation from a Sprint employee that the EG31 tar was given to stores. This whole thing is bizarre. It will be interesting to see how Samsung handles the ota. I know a tar will be available most likely, but that isn't going to help the grandmom on EG31 who never heard of xda. Maybe the final ota will have a full radio, who knows.
I heard from a reliable source that Samsung is concerned with wifi problems associated with the new ota and that is why it hasn't been released yet.

This is interesting. I have read several posts of people saying their Wifi wasn't connecting after updating but somehow they got it cleared up. Whenever there is a full official update tar we will be able to get the modem from it to update even from EG31. It would be a first if they didn't do it that way

I wrote back requesting the EG30 tar as Sprint used Odin to put me on EG31 and i want to be on the "official" Samsung supported version. It took almost a week to get that response so we will see what happens. Like a CM dev said about support for our phone on the CM9 blog "don't hold your breath" lol.

I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet, and yes, I know there's another thread about the "confirmed" Dec update from a top dev but I figured this is worthy of its own thread. Sounds like the update might only be for the GSM versions of the phone, and we might have to wait for our specific Epic Touch update, but things must be close at this point.

Indeed my friend.
Sent from the future.
Carriers hold back updates??? They would never do such thing.
I know some updates the carrier has to purchase from the manufacturer and some are free. I don't quite understand where the dividing line is but having to pay for an update would surely slow down a carrier's intention of pushing an update.
Warning about updates

Operating systems are complicated programs.
Whether it's for a desktop PC or a smartphone

Updates and patches will also have bugs.

so when they do release this for our phones, will i need to unroot to install it? or can someone make a side load for it so we don't have to? any idea?

This confuses me that people unroot to root again for updates. As long as I have been a part of forums any new updates always come out in a rooted version or a Rom upgrade. Amen brotha!
Once the first XDA user who knows what they're doing gets an update, it will be posted here so fast that many will find out about it here, not by getting it via OTA. They push them out over several days so most likely there will be a full stock tar to Odin before many of us get it.

How...?
Because the international version is getting something first?
Okay.... the international version also came out first.
The international versions of Samsung devices always get it first.
Samsung has proven time and time again that they are more concerned about the international market than they are the U.S.
It's funny how quickly people forget about history when trying to assign blame.
It's like XDA members live their lives to blame the carriers for everything.
Dammit, it's raining and cold out side, stupid Sprint!
It does make me wonder why AT&Ts Skyrocket just got 2.3.6 pushed to it on 11/22 though, which was released almost 2 months after Sprint's E4GT. Then again, why the Skyrocket and not AT&T's non-LTE GSII? Who knows why these guys do what they do.

Given Samsung's spotty support for CDMA devices, I'd rather they spend time on ICS.
We should be getting a update tonight or tomorrow.

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch ICS update leaked
26 April 2012 by Michael Crider ]
Ah, there hasn’t been enough news lately about the Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch lately – my fingers were just starting to recover. An enterprising XDA user named “sfhub” has posted what seems to be an official Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Now Network phone, compatible only with the specific version of the device. The leak comes after various international versions of the Galaxy S II have been updated, not to mention leaks for AT&T’s Galaxy S II and Galaxy S II Skyrocket.
The update comes in the form of a one-click Odin desktop install, so you’ll need a PC in order to apply it. The XDA poster has kindle pre-modded the software to grant root (which pretty much anyone who installs a leak will want anyway) and offers it in a “clean” version that wipes your current ROM or an upgrade version that keeps your user data intact. The latter may cause problems with some apps, so for a worry free experience I’d recommend a clean flash.
Early user reports are positive; the software seems nearly complete. No major issues with the core Android and TouchWiz experience have been noted by flashers, though the update process is confusing if you’ve never used Odin before. If you’ve already rooted, remember to make a Nandroid backup. There’s still no word on when the OTA update will arrive.

---Jay--- From the CM9 powered Epic Touch
In most the website everyone has been reporting the Epic 4g Touch will get updated tomorrow and they show Android Beam coming as part of the update but our phone doesnt have NFC so is this a mistake
Yeah, it's a mistake, no NFC on our phone unfortunately.
Jump into camera from lockscreen should be another error because that is not available on FF18 leak. If now if available then the FF18 is different from leak and many are very wrong that for some fixes and additions it need a new rdf
I believe the OTA will be different from the leak also to some minor changes there is no always need for a complete new build number just saying.
Lol sprint is like "these are all the awesome enhancements you would have of we didn't jack it up before giving it to you."
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I sure hope the ota is different (read: less bugs) than the ff18 leak. Every time I flash it, in less than 24 hours I'm going back to EL29 because 18 pisses me off too much. Mainly with its behavior with apps. Or should I say the app's behavior with ics.
its 11:44 here in atlanta... 17min togo!!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I think the OTA will be different. Every hated EL29 and bashed it before it went official. Now we all run it on our phones Lol....I'm sure in many ways it WILL be different.
It's actually quite funny. That's the big talk now on every forum posting that the source is out. Android Beam!
Yet at some point, a Sprint PR guy obviously doesn't know his phones so doesnt realize there is no NFC chip to work with on the phone.
But then again, only Sprint Reps are supposed to see that release sheet.
It's def legit, it was laying on my desk when I got to work. Just really bad phone knowledge.
Official discussion will be here. Thank you. :highfive:

Darn it! I thought it was JB since I read an article that US S3 was beeing updated over the OTA. Oh well..
chat with the ATT rep regarding JB rollout for ATT. This is the second reference I have gotten from a ATT rep that says the update may "affect the network" and that "if it does have an adverse affect it will not be released."
You are now chatting with 'Paul Goss'
Paul Goss: Thank you for completing the pre-chat survey. I will be happy to help you out with any of your issues today.
Paul Goss: Once it is made available to AT&T customer you will receive a text message letting you know.
RICHARD THOMAS: Just following up on a chat I had this AM. I understand you have nothing to do with the update but why can sprint roll out JB for the exact same device months earlier than ATT?
Paul Goss: Once the phone manufacturer releases the software we then test it over our network and once that is done we will then release for customers.
RICHARD THOMAS: by the release from sprint the software is or has been released by the manufacturer. The motorola Atrix fiasco has put a bad taste in my mouth. We were promised a update from motorola and ATT for almost a year and on the last day told we would not receive it. I just kind of get the feeling that ATT is going to do the same thing with this phone. I don't have much faith in ATT at the moment.
Paul Goss: Sorry you feel that way however before we can release we need to know how it will affect the network. Our network is much bigger and much more complex then Sprint there fore it requires more testing. if it does have an adverse affect then it will not be released.
RICHARD THOMAS: so we can expect to possibly NOT get a android Jelly Bean release?
Paul Goss: I have no knowledge or control over that. I can only say were in the process of testing it. The results are not given to us until it is released.
RICHARD THOMAS: you are the second tech that has told me that it might have an adverse effect on the network.
Paul Goss: Was there any other questions or concerns I can address today?
Paul Goss: Hopefully shortly we'll get notice that it is being released.
RICHARD THOMAS: no. Just a little disappointed in the amount of time that it is taking ATT to approve a software update on its customer's phones. Last anyone heard it wouldn't be until 2013
Paul Goss: Regretfully I can not comment on that as I have not been given that information.
Paul Goss: Once it is released you will be given notice.
RICHARD THOMAS: very well, thank you for chatting. please inform your supervisors that customers are getting irritated by the slow pace of updates. Not that anyone in corporate cares once they get our money.
Paul Goss: We do caret the last thing we want is for you to update the software and ending with a phone that does not work or work properly. I'm sure the last thing you want to do is go a week with out a phone while the company sends out a new one to replace the nonworking one.
RICHARD THOMAS: I agree just not convinced that is all.
RICHARD THOMAS: remember I had the motorola atrix that was abandoned half way through my contract.
RICHARD THOMAS: Thank you for taking the time to chat. I will not bother you further today.
Such a load of BS. This is obviously what they are instructed to tell people when they ask about updates to their phone. Guess what? People install custom ROMs on their phones and it doesn't "affect the network". Although at this point I wish it did and brought the network to its knees so AT&T corporate would actually get off their butts and do something.
I wouldn't sweat it. With sprint already releasing their version, we could see ours anyday now. I hope its by end of this weekend. Would make a nice surprise.

As most of you know, the Epic 4G Touch A.K.A E4GT, Just recently received the 4.1.2 (Build GB27/GB28) update. Since we're behind on the 4.1.2 update, do you think we'll see 4.2.2 before they release 4.3?
Just a guess, but no. The international S2 may see it, and we can port it, but Sprint won't push anymore updates as they've deemed this device EOS.

It would be nice but I doubt it as well. More than 4.2.2, I wish Sprint would give us the USB-OTG functionality, if it's possible through a software update they can simply push to us.

It is carrier too because in Europe they buy their phones out right. here in the us we have contracts. So it would make sense ffor manufacturers to support older phones. However supporting old phones will prevent people from getting new ones
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
We might see 4.2.2 since it would be considered a minor upgrade from 4.1.2
It all depends on what Samsung plans on doing with the Galaxy S II family of devices. It was and still is their number 1 selling device and it has good enough specs to support 4.2.2, we'll just have to wait and see. We won't really know much since Sextape is no longer going to provide any leaks for us.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I believe Samsung will push 4.2. The titanium version is not that old. Think of all the people who just got one for free on contract. Also Sprint's prepaid versions of the e4gt came months after ours. Samsung already said 4.2 was coming for the S2. I believe that would be the final update before its put to rest.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
March 2013 was 18 months after release. So I very much doubt we will see official TouchWiz 4.2. However, our phone already has AOSP 4.2, and if (more likely when) the i9100 gets a TouchWiz 4.2, we will almost certainly see a port, since we use much of the same hardware.
Samsung will be relasing a direct to you 4.2 around the 2year anniversary of the device as the final major update to the s2 line. After the 4.2 push all s2's will be EOL'd by sammy and only maintenance updates will be issued for any major bugs in 4.2

They're doing it on all device's starting with s2. They're going to support them out 24 month's even without carrier support by using the kies direct download updates. A friend of mine that works for Samsung is the one who told me they're doing this. She said almost every device they manufactured after jan 1, 2011 will be supported for 24 months whether the carrier's support them or not. Even the budget device's will be supported the same way. It was the number 1 complaint they received and a majority of the update issues were due to carrier delays so they decided if the carrier's reject the update they'd do direct download updates via kies to keep their support agreement with Google intact. They made an agreement with Google and the OHA (Open Handset Alliance) to support all device's for 18+ months and decided after reviewing complaints from customers that they would support for 24 months, the average length of a carrier contract.

It's about surplus inventory. More specifically it's about selling off the remaining Wimax SoCs and getting some revenue off WiMax, itself, until Sprint stops supporting it. They did the same thing with the Evo 3D. You can also buy a Virgin Hotspot for $120 and get unlimited WiMax (with 2GB of unthrottled 3G fallback) for $35/mo, which is a steal in some markets. However, the EOL for these devices is determined by how quickly they can liquidate them.

BTW I only know for sure the intl s2 and gsm US s2's will get 4.2 but there is a very high chance the CDMA versions will get it as well. Typically when the international version gets an update the US versions get it ported over a few months later after they have the time to make the network specific changes and test everything. It's actually fairly simple for Samsung to build 1 version for their main international model and then migrate it to the rest of the device's in the same family without having to waste time and resources completely rebuilding everything for a specific device. Think of it like AOSP they build 1 main branch in their repo and compile it and test on their main flagship (nexus for AOSP, International models for Samsung in this case). Once they have a solid working build then they fork the repo and start adding device trees for other models and then compile and test until they get most of the bugs out and get a stable enough build to be confident it won't destroy someone's phone when it updates.
