Serious question.. regarding EVO batt life - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So not here to stir up this post with heresay and sayso facts or not facts... But this is my 5 th EVO since released goin.. back and forth.. I was just curious if anyone knows of a fix to the teribble batt life.. goin on over a yr now...since released..and all the trial and error ... Talk on flahing kernels ..certain roms.. extended batterys.. even partitioning SD cards..
Now there's threads on latest OTA KERNEL including first real trickle charge on the device ...
So are they're any good fixes /links /ideas that cure the issue ..etc.. such as Rom/ kernel combo ? Anything
Besides relying on extended batt

You should probably look into viperMOD. You can undervolt most AOSP kernels to save some battery but sacrifice a little performance. I actively use this mod and I must say it does save a tremendous amount of battery.

I mean, it all depends on how much you use your phone, and what you use it for. I keep my 3g on all day long, and using MikG I can easily go 2 days without charging. Before gingerbread, I was using Myn's 2.2, and I could easily go 3 days without charging.

My setup lasts all day without needing to recharge. And I don't have to turn off my data either. Flash various ROM/kernel combos, calibrate your battery, modify how often your widgets and services update, adjust display brightness, don't let erroneous apps run in the background, etc. Doing that to make sure your phone is setup properly has the single biggest impact on your battery life.
After you do that then you can start fine tuning with things like turning off your data/GPS service, using vipermod, undervolting, etc. in order to get even more life from your battery.

Kernel issues

What would you say is the best battery saving kernel? I need to go a days worth of battery , and I use my phone heavily.
I use jd mod 102310.
I'm currently testing kings cfs#8 but its dying fast why? I just loaded the rom after a full charge.
How long will the battery life start to kick in?
Please help me.
Advice is needed.

The funny thing about kernels is that it changes from phone to phone, I may get the best battery life with kings#9 and it might drain you're phone faster than there before.... I use calks 1.4 with kk#9 and I'm getting the best battery life I've ever seen with the evo. Else check to see if ur phone is sleeping properly.

I don't expect to convince anyone to go back to stock, but the newer ota updates and roms have fantastic battery life. I can't say that I have noticed any difference in battery life with the 3.30 but I haven't taken he time to observe. But 3.29 was a big improvement, or so it seemed.
I go about 40 before charging. And I'm a heavy user.

Rom and kernel help!!!

I'm in a dilemma! For the last week I've been hunting around to find the right combination of Kernels and Roms. Natively I'm a CM ASOP man. But I've tried everything from CM to MIUI to Ava to Mym. None of the roms are giving a decent amount of battery life. I've tried several combinations of Kernels also. My battery life has been as terrible as 3 hours. I'm talking about losing a percent every minute!
I didn't buy an extended battery. But I have tried a brand new regular battery to make sure that I didn't have a bad battery. Both batteries have the same results under all combinations of Kernels and Roms.
I've seen members braggin on having 12 to 18th hours of life under heavy use! How is that possible!? Lol! I know it has to do with device, kernel, rom combinations.
Can the awsome members of the GREAT Xda please help me out? Point me in the right direction. fyi: I have a ver 003 device and also I don't overclock much at all but I underclock to try and save a lil juice!
Thanks in advanced!

No matter what rom/kernel combination I run I get really ****ty battery life with the stock red HTC battery. For me personally investing the $70 or so for the Seidio extended battery on Amazon was worthwhile. I also purchased their wall charger as well.
I'm not going to blow smoke up your ass and say that the battery last 2 days with heavy use because thats BS. However, with heavy use (running emulators, gmail sync, occasional bluetooth for wii mote, texting, web browsing, etc) I can get through a 9 hour work day with a lil life to spare.
At least go on amazon and get a1800 mah battery. They are cheap but goood.

I just bought another stock battery and a wall charger, I keep the spare in my wallet and battery life is a non issue now.
Check out batteryboss.org before buying an aftermarket one though, most of them are rips offs.
I'm not sure about rip offs on amazon but certainly ebay..i bought two batteries w/a charger for $25..and a third one since my oem battery took a bath, fully charged.

I'm going to research some better batteries. I appreciate the intel. But my thing is I know I can get a few more hours of battery time with a simple kernel modification. You should see if you can get a replacement battery from sprint. I am using CM7 nightly 24, and can easily sustain 24+ hours with the OEM red battery.
Everyone will have different results even with the same rom/kernel, however the drain that your experiencing does sound like your battery might be going bad.

I see your stats and that sh*t is wicked! I used CM7 and that one drains the quickest lol.... before I cash out on a new extended battery where's an abundant source of Kernels? I've tried three and I wanted to do a little process of elimination before I pull out my visa lol

There aren't very many CM7 kernel's available yet, so few that I can't even begin to tell you where to start looking, for Sense roms though, search for Netarchy those kernels work really well.
I see... I appreciate that! Imma give Mym a try with a few of them Kernels. Thanks again for the help
And what exactly is the Kernel that you are using!? Lol
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
Honestly, I've found that the right kernel makes the biggest difference and setcpu, juicedefender, etc only make it worse. For me (also 003 hw) kings kernel and htc # 15 uv have been best. I've had great success with azrael and vaelpak roms. Currently on vaelpak with kings # 11 with NO battery saving apps. I get 24 hours with my regular use. Yesterday was very light, I went 24 hours with just under 50% left.

v8-BETA
12/25/10 - SBC for BC's Kernel SBC-bcnice-stable-v8.zip (2.62 MB)
This is what I've been testing for a while. This build contains auto bump charging based on the voltage as opposed to the full charge method. I don't know how it works on extended batteries yet...but works pretty good on stock batteries. With this, you should have a better chance of picking up the phone at higher voltages.

I flashed the ver 8 with CM6. 1.2. so far I've gotten slightly better battery life. 20 minutes and I'm still on 99%. That's a whole lot better than losing 1% a minute lol! I'm still going to do another exhaustive research to pinpoint the best combination!

If your still using CM7, it has its own built in setCPU, I have mine set to ondemand 245min, 768max, and sorry for the delayed response, I went to lunch, however the Kernel I am using for my CM7 flash is just the stock kernel that comes with the initial build if CM7.

A lot of people say AOSP ROMs are good on battery life cuz the sense is gone.
Try out Xplod RLS (one of my favs) test it out see how it goes for you. It's an AOSP btw.
For sense I recommend Tommytomatoes Classic v0.0.0.4 its awesome!
How long does your battery last? Are you running mobile data all day? GPS?
I can get around 20-24 hours put of my battery with real heavy usage. Around 2 days with normal use.
I keep my 3g and everything off until i need it.
HTC EVO 4G running Mikg 2.58
Don't know who your talkin too but I'll reply lol
On Classic I'm gettin roughly about 1d 19h 43m with pretty decent usage text, call, xda, browsing jus putting it to charge right now
I have always had the best success with AOSP and custom kernel.
Currently running ICSmod7 with latest tiamets. With 4g it drops fast but without I get through a full day no worries medium use. Text, fb, music during workout ect...

I've been experimenting with ROMs and kernels for the last 18 months, always looking for best battery life with regular to heavy use. A good custom kernel will sometimes give you an extra 10-15 %. Using setCPU or another app like systemtuner (my pref) to turn CPU down while screen off can also give you 5-10%. Far and away the best thing for my battery is to use an alternative launcher (ADW for me) and then use Titanium backup pro or systemtuner to freeze sense. you just find the two elements in the process list that start with "HTC sense" and freeze them. Night and day. FYI I run synergy and have always come back to Myn's ROMs cause they are good for battery from the start, but they also take well to pretty much any custom kernel, which isn't true for all ROMs. I like everything to work so I always ditch AOSP ROMs a few days after trying them.

Underclocking your CPU typically causes higher battery drain... unless you're overclocking. As long as nothing is really hammering the CPU in the background (which is the problem, not the CPU speed!), then it's better to let the CPU enter higher power states in order to finish the work quicker and return to low power sleep state. Intel calls this HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle). Overclocking can have bad effects with HUGI due to the higher voltage required to run at those frequencies. Lol'd at your AOSP comment though. I suppose some people are okay with subpar android, aka sense .
My Evo can last a week on a single charge. CM7.1, 1850 mAh aftermarket battery (slim, stock battery cover), Tiamat 4.1.0 kernel, aggressive undervolting and monitoring of wakelocks combined with 90% wifi usage (3g is the #1 source of battery drain!).

Underclocking is when you set the speed of the processor to a lower setting than the stock clocks where as undervolting is lowering the voltage needed to run it at a certain speed be it stock underclocked or overclocked. Simplest way I understand it.

Real culprit for batt issues
Has anyone ever bothered to understand that theres a pesty bug no one knew of.. Called CIQ "carrier IQ"
Ya this is one of the main reasons behind bad batt.. Sprint and other carriers allow a company to monitor and chart everything we do and it mirrors off txts and data sent and is designed to pick up on.key words... Basically an Invasive tracking monitor. It's a huge in noticed drain... And its been shown to be removed from system/app in many custom roms. But it never does cause its so strattled throughout the OS.

Did I FRY my CPU??

First of all im not putting down anyone and there custom roms. As I am an avid flasher of them and there great features..
However.. Ive noticed with every rom I flash, my battery life SUCKS. I know kernels are suppose to have battery saver mods, but never seem to work for my phone. The only way I seem to get great battery life is if I odin back to stock. Its seems to last forever on stock.
On stock.. I would average around 10% drain every two hours of moderate use.. mainly texting..
On Custom roms I average 10 to 15 % drain every hour with same moderate use..
My question is, Could Overclocking have caused this problem??

Quite possibly... And unfortunately, you have to test different Kernels with your ROM to see what works best, or just ask the Dev which Kernel they used when developing the ROM... That's a good way to get the best battery life because after all, that's the Kernel the Dev based the ROM off of. Another option is to check out Marcusants post on setting up your Kernel for your ROM, and I apologize if you've already tried that... I'm just trying to list options... I've had problems with different kernels on different ROMS... Well at least until Rodderik started making his Kernels with Viper ROMS... Then it started working perfect lol. How are you running your clocking? Conservative? Performance? Also, are you using SetCPU with an OC/UV kernel and the Voltage Control app? If you use the two together, it could cause a lot of issues, you'd have to choose one or the other.
On the other hand, I could be 100% wrong and it could be just your flux capacitor... You know how touchy those things are. Try chucking your phone over 88 MPH and see how that works. The next step is VERY important though... Whatever you do, don't forget to put your phone in airplane mode before you throw it in the air or it'll just fall right back down after a couple feet... Keep it in the air I always say.

Im hoping once I hit 88MPH it will go back in time to when my phone actually worked. haha
I usually just use the Kernel that comes with the rom..
However I have used Set CPU and Voltage control together once. I messed around with the setting between performance and conservative.
Orion, first off. If u remember how "beepers" worked back in the day, if u ever had one, that's how text messaging works. It triggers a small ping when being sent or receiving message. So text messages really hardly use power. As far as ur battery is concerned, try this method if u like, just to see what kind of results u get. Charge battery completely with phone on first and then off. Then boot into cwm and wipe ur battery stats. Then drain ur battery completely without charging it. Then completely charge it up, and then see how ur battery does.

Battery was ok when I overclocked.. went down hill after that. Except whenever im on stock EI22 Gingerbread and it runs all day.
On custom roms with stock frequencies I would still see a significant drain.
I don't think you fried it if it's still running fine on stock. I'd be more likely to think you're overclocking with an aggressive governor that is making your cpu stay at higher frequencies.
I havent been doing any OC or UV in months now and still have the problems on custom roms. Perhaps I got the phone that doesnt like to be modded.. Damn Sprint ha
also screen brightness has a HUGE effect on battery life. also do you do games and such? Those can be very draining as well. I am on a viper rom going on 14hrs and still at 78%. but i mostly text with my phone. about 15,000 a month to be exact. and use f.b. and xda pretty heavily. and different kernels can make the difference between 6 hours and 20.

i will say that my phone is particular on what rom i do run no matter what kernel i use
I just mainly text and surf the web occasionally. Funny part though the only game I play rarely is Deer Hunter Challenge which is a pretty high def large file game and when i play that my battery doesnt seem to drain. Right now Ive gone down 10% over the last hour just sending about 15 texts. And I have my display set to auto brightness
It's real simple...overclocking equals faster cpu AND faster battery drain. Do not overclock or do not complain about battery...one or the other.

[Q] What are you currently doing to increase battery life?

We all know our GS2 runs out of Battery at a faster rate than what we would like! I'm just curious, what steps do You take to increase battery life, if any.
-Do you use certain apps?
-Do you enable/disable certain things and certain times?
-Anything, ever the smallest things you do, I would like to know!
I'm just curious to see what different people do to strengthen their battery.
(Also, if you could, please just post what ROM you're running on too) Thanks!

i run cm10 and I really don't do anything but dim my screen most of the time.
Battery Life
Im running FK23 leaked rooted with stock kernel. I use powersave mode that comes in stock settings app.
I don't limit cpu. I use phone to txt, play games, youtube, facebook, twitter, and instagram and google play store.
I get around 14+ hours usage.
Also, I try to use WIFI whenever I can. I turn off GPS when not needed. I dont use 4G often as 3G is pretty good on FK23.
Lasts me from 7:45AM to 10:27PM as of now on 1%.
Wow, and how much do you use you're phone throughout the day? I'm just looking for new ideas because I do several things to increase my battery length, but I find myself around 50% in the first 2-3 hours of my 11 hour day. :/

I bought a cheap ($10) extended battery and cover, and a cheap ($9) TPU case/ At 14 hours, I still had 61% battery left. I can get a full legitimate day out of it running 2.3's, but I am going to try JB and ICS again and see where it's at.
I run KingKang with the JB tweaks package. I also modified my build.prop for both performance and battery life. Plus I toggle my 3G on only when I need it. If I have a WiFi signal I'll do the same with that. I average 17 hours but sometimes I get more than 24. Inverted apps not only look great, but help with battery too.

Honestly? #1 thing I do is stay on wi-fi as much as possible. Have gone almost 24 hours if I keep off 3G/4G and moderately use the phone/'net.
Where did you purchase the battery, and how much stronger is it? Also, what kind of case did you get, one that chargers your phone?

Just bought the cheapest 3500 mah battery with a back plate on Amazon, then the ONLY extended tpu case made by trexcell on Ebay. 20 bucks and I leave wifi gps and everything I use on all day long.
Epic4GT with different ROMs every few days. Thanks Devs!

I switched back to Calkulin 3.0. Battery issues solved.
I tried to make ICS work for a couple months, but grew to hate the phone. It's a much better phone when it runs Gingerbread.

I did the same as you until the fk23 leak came out. Calkulin's v3.0 gb is amazing for battery life, smoothness, and functionality. I was never fully satisfied with any of the ics solutions, stock or custom.
Although the fk23 battery life isnt as good as calkulin, I'm still using it as my daily driver bc it's jellybean and cool, the phone runs well and smooth, and battery is good enough for me.
To answer the op's question, I do the following to help extend my battery life:
1. Leave off all data unless I need to use it (3g, 4g, wifi).
2. Turn of autosync and only sync as needed.
3. Remove bloatware and/or freeze any unnecessary apps (use GSM battery and OS monitor to find battery hog apps).
4. Leave off GPS unless needed.
5. Set screen brightness lower.
Here's a link to my FK23 results over in the battery thread in General:

I've only owned this phone since after the ICS update, so never tried any GB ROM.
The ICS ROM I've had the most success with is Re-Calked, but FK23 takes it just a step further for me. I know some people have been reporting issues with FK23, but for me it has been rock solid and has been my DD for nearly a week now.
Blu Kuban also did well with battery life, but it is a little over-customized for my liking. I also had some stability issues with BK. I used sleshpics M'ICS build for a while too ... again, over customized for my liking. Good performance and relatively stable. Also, I have never been able to get 4G speeds on any other ROM/kernel like I'm seeing now.
If I'm in an area with a strong cellular signal, I can get over 24h with 3h+ screen time both on and off WiFi. If the cell signal is week, I burn from 5-7%/h so maybe 15-16h if I was there all day ... but that would obv. improve if I threw it into airplane mode.
I have frozen all of the bloatware apps, don't have Google Now activated. Other than that, I allow syncing to occur per default. I don't have FB app installed.
I use auto-brightness most of the time, and I have a dark wallpaper.
dim screen. stay on wifi. that is all.
Honestly, getting use to a dimmed screen made a HUGE difference!!
Is there ever a time when its better to not be on WiFi, of a WiFi is available?
