ics and battery life

At first my girlfriend had her Nexus S updated to ics and immediately we noticed a huge difference in how long her battery lasted and she is the furthest thing from a heavy user.
So when I heard that ics ws being released for our phone my first thought was i hope that what she experienced won't be what i do as we have a better phone right?
Well I am sad to say on a stock but rooted rom I experience the same lack of battery life as her.
Now I am no beginner to Android and have changed all sorts of settings available and nothing syncs on its own and when I unplug my phone from charging in the morning I will need to plug my phone in at night before bed as my phone will be completely dead.
I have to say I am very disappointed in the battery life of thr the stock rom and hope some good kernels make it out to help.

Have you tried to find out which app/process is draining your battery? Better Battery Stats can help you identify what is using up your battery.
I had a big keep awake problem when i first installed stock ICS on my T989D. I did a full wipe of the phone and formatted my internal SD card (after backing things up of course), reinstall the same stock ICS and everything works great now. Battery life is about the same as before (stock GB w/ Synergy kernel), which is about 30 hours with moderate use.

Try CM 9. I get almost 2 days of battery life.

Though I am now on AOKP, I had great battery life on stock ICS as well. But, everything is subjective. How many email accounts are being synced? Do you have Facebook / Twitter / G+ updating every hour? Do you have news feeds continuously updating as well?
I have to agree with the poster above. Get Better Battery Stats and find the culprit draining your battery and work from there.

biggest thing draining the battery is the screen.
you can literally watch the battery usage drop 10-15% in a period of 10 to 15 minutes which is absurd when its set to low.

Wait for kernel development. Its underway as we speak. It will make a significant difference.
Some battery saving tips:
- use juicedefender and set it to aggressive mode.
- use romtoolbox or other programs to underclock cpu frequency.
- also try using telus stock ics. Very good battery life.

I have a brand new T989D (I'm new to Android, former iPhone user) and got the ICS upgrade the day I got it (9 days ago). Battery life is terrible, I'm lucky if I get 10 hours of moderate usage. The phone also tends to run very, very hot. Sometimes apps freeze and all I can do is either wait or, in some cases, remove the battery to reboot.
I'm open to any tips that will get this fixed! I haven't rooted yet (no time). I think I will try those wipe tools and reflash the stock ICS ROM.

Stock, not rooted, my battery life is great. Something is using your battery up, and flashing some exotic kernel isn't going to change that. The stock kernel works fine. You'll want to find the root of the problem. Keep a real-time (or 1-5s interval anyway) eye on the phone's current (mA) usage, and when it's high for no apparent reason, you'll know that whatever is sucking your battery is doing it right then. That should help you characterize the problem. I've noticed when my WCDMA/GSM radio signal sucks, so does the battery life, so I either turn off the radio or switch to GSM only when I'm in that area. If your display is what's eating your battery, well a kernel can't stop that. Turn the brightness down, leave it on auto-brightness, or just deal with it if you need the display on all the time. But if tweaking and modding makes you happy, by all means...

I have the same complaint. The "screen" battery usage is just unacceptable, especially compared to GB. My phone has been draining from a full charge for ~4.5 hours and my screen usage is 70% and battery is down to 65% with hardly 10 minutes of screen-on time.

I use an app called autostarts and you basically enable/disable apps that start running when certain events happen (phone startup, wifi being turned on, incoming call/sms/mms, other apps turning on, etc.). Just make sure you do your homework so you dont disable something critical. Hopefully this app works on ICS. You'll be surprised what different events make certain apps turn on automaticly. Screen, data/wifi, gps and bluetooth are the biggest battery drainers. No matter what Rom you are on if you don't keep control of those items your battery will drain fast. Keep ur screen on auto, let it go off @ 15 seconds ( you have to be pretty used to your phone for that setting not to annoy you), turn OFF your data or wifi when not in use. With bluetooth and gps...well u know that when you use them your battery is gonna drain faster than normal...just keep that in mind. Its all pretty much common sense.
I'm not going to tell you how much battery time I get cuz its nonsense. There are times my phone lasts till the next day and others Im charging it by sundown. Then again Im still on Juggs n Darkside kernel and Im gonna wait a bit still b4 I make the switch. Also don't go by what other people say on battery life cuz if you might not get the same results on that ROM. Everyone of our devices is unique and acts different. Everyone user uses their phone different. You can't define "light, moderate, heavy" use so don't go by that either.

After upgrading to ICS stock unrooted battery life sucked (5-6hrs). I did the whole remove battery, factory reset and still sucked.
Broke down rooted (still stock), downloaded batterycalibration from play, followed the instructions. Easily get over 24hrs before having to charge again. and when I say easily, I mean I still have over 25% left.

Get a gnex extended....maybe a bad battery

AOKP build 40, latest eugene373 streamline kernel. I went 9 hours earlier it earlier and it was still at 70% You will see a difference!!

Bingo. Vastly different battery life between ROM's is generally BS. Every once in a great while one of these threads has merit but typically someone saying ROM X had "Killer" battery life is clueless and drinking the koolaid. Then a placebo effect takes place. And definitely someones "Heavy" use is subjective. If someone says they get a day out of an android phone they are not heavy users by my definition. It doesn't happen with heavy use. Perhaps the Razr Maxx or another phone with a very large battery but I've had 5 Android phones. If I get past noon it's because I am not using my phone that much and forget about a full day. It's never happened in the 4 years I've used google OS phones. Never.

Yes exactly, I hate when people post screenshots of their phone getting 24+ hours, I'm there thinking "well obviously they don't use their phone alot". There is no way in hell i could get 24 hours no matter what rom/kernal I use. Im just happy when my phone can make it till I get home at night

Battery life poor except for stock

I give up.every ROM I run just doesn't have the battery life expected. Am I expecting to much? Not even Cauks or blazer el29 doesn't give the battery life as stock.don't get me wrong they are all great roms but at least for my device not battery friendly. I'll post some battery stats from BBS if anybody has some free time to see what's going on. I'm on Cauks el29 now.I format everything before flashing and I use cauks format all many times. I'm on the verge of staying on stock roll my eyes.

Well when is the last time you used stock? And if it's been quite a while...consider having your battery checked out. Anyway, I'll continue as if your battery is fine from here on out. Basically, anything but stock tends to have a modified kernel. Even with all the battery tweaks, etc out there, there's a chance that the kernel itself might not play well with your phone. I'm not too versed in that, but I also noticed that the TouchWiz based ICS kernels/ROMs give MUCH better battery life than AOSP based kernels/ROMs such as CM9 and AOKP, etc. This is just basic stuff you might already know, but yeah, just go on and post your battery stats, preferably with a custom rom and a stock rom so we can see the difference and where it lies. Also, I'm running Touched by a Galaxy S3 on my phone and with moderate use (music for maybe a few hours a day, texting, don't really make many calls) I average between 8.5 and 11 hours from 100 to 0. Another thing I'd suggest is download CPU Spy from the Android market, or something similar if you prefer, and post screenshots from that on the custom ROM; the problem with AOSP and certain other GB and TW ICS roms that i've seen is that something prevents the processor from going into deep sleep mode, usually keeping it at 200mhz or higher. Lastly, when you use the custom roms, do you notice the phone getting really hot compared to the stock roms?

I'm assuming you know this but are you letting the battery cycle a few times before passing judgement? I usually spend a week on a rom before I decide if I have good/bad battery life... attached screenie is normal for me with moderate use on mijjhs goodness rom

I always had faster battery drains on ROMs than stock. I see all this awesome battery stats screenshots but noticed they all share one common factor, only 1hrs to 30min screen use. Come on guys why I would want that battery life if to get it I have to barely use the phone makes no sense to me.

Agree, everyone have different experiences, I haven't try that ROM yet, I will test it out later. Have a nice day/night sir.

Sadly I have to agree with OP.
And the previous screenshots at 59% with 1hr, 36 screen on is exactly the issue.
Hard to compare your battery stats with mine since screen on time for my phone will be 4+ hours.
Since there are no standardized testing anyone can do with any rom, any speculation on which rom has better battery life or doesn't is just pure bogus seat of the pants gut feelings.
If there were a standard test that ran like. 5 minutes of mail with 20 mails received, 10 minutes download, 30 mins of playing the exact same video, 13 music tracks of the exact same song all with screen, vibration, brightness, etc all at the exact same level, you could get a real test, but, alas, nobody has a standardized test.
For MY usage, stock clocks in at the same as or better than just about any other rom I've tried, including all the various super scripts out there.
I guess I just overuse my phone!

Probably a good 2 weeks since on stock. I tried all ICS but i just used the kernel that it was packed with.THats a good time frame. What is the best kernel to run with roms?

Wow thats some crazy battery life. yea ive been on it for a good week. pretty much i stay on it for a week or two and then i do a battery calibrate. what kernel do you use with the Mijjhs Goodness rom

Get a good gb rom and under clock that puppy to 500 or 800. Battery definitely lasts

Also if you use caulks roms flash his under volt script as well. I was using his -75mv script stable. Which equaled amazing battery life.

Things drain battery. This is my test off wifi for the most part using the phone as a phone with average use. Didn't even log in to Google on this one. Just proof that intensive applications, google services, and anything else added after a "factory flash" can manipulate battery life significantly.
Oh, and check out drain when I'm in less than ideal coverage. Noticeable difference. One huge factor to consider when diagnosing battery life.

It really depends on what you're doing with the phone. Obviously having brightness up playing heavy games with Wimax on will kill battery faster than someone on low brightness reading an ebook with wifi on. That said, i agree that I've had better battery life stock than almost all ics roms.

Truth to the last word.. I hate battery life threads too many variables.. I love the part about " using the phone as a phone " you crack me up B..:laugh:

Battery Drain

Is there an app or way that conserves the battery power. The phone is still completely stock but it received a firmware update through Tmobile and ever since then the battery gets drained by 4 pm (after all apps are x-ed out and phone is just in standby) the batter drops to around 30 percent... what can I do? I don't think it needs a new battery since its only a few months old... suggestions?

I dont know how much you use your phone and weather or not you watch movies or download files with Wi-Fi alot but it could seriously drain your battery if you leave things like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, Brightness Up, or use live wallpapers.
If not, I would recommend checking your battery against someone elses because I've had a phone before that had a bad battery that could explode and caused me to have battery issues. Make sure your battery isnt swollen at all and if it is make sure you take it out and dont put it back in and go to a Battery+ store nearby and I'm sure they got one for your phone (they come with warranty).

Well my wife and I have the same phone and it does it to both. I don't have signal in my job since they have a Verizon antenna and it blocks our t mobile signal so I don't use it during the day which means the phone is just on stand by for the first eight hours. I make sure I turn off wifi, blue tooth, GPS etc and close all apps....but by the time I get out of work it's at 30-40% power.... both phones were bought this April so was hoping it wasn't/isn't a hardware issue and have to replace the batteries....

This is where the world of rooting and tweaking your android becomes extremely attractive.
There are ROMs that last 1 day + ( that's 24h+ hours of battery)
Only need two things....
1. Patience - to sit, read and closely follow instructions
2. Guts - to take a dive and risk ruining your phone. (Which doesn't happen if you have number 1)

The rest all needs rooting really.
2. Build.prop tweaks
3. UV with a custom kernel
4. Lowest screen brightness (doesn't require root)
5. Restrict yourself to 2G networks either using AOKP settings or a build.prop tweak
There are others but this is how I achieve great battery times mostly.

Why not try and find out what is using your battery up first? Try GSAM from the play store, its free for one, easy to use, it will show you what is draining your battery, there are a few paid ones as well, but try the free first , HERE is the direct link to GSAM.
or QR code, just scan it with phone.

That is a very weird situation and try a app that shows the apps using battery. Even check the stock android battery section in settings and see whats getting used. Your brightness should be first since it can really eat your battery if its turned up. I dont think its defective since both your phones are having the same problem but both my parents have the 4.0.4 firmware installed on their T989's without a problem and get decent battery power. I however am using a custom rom with kernel. Did you use the same battery for each phone? or each phone has the same problem with their own devices and their own batteries when getting updated to 4.0.4? If you used your battery on her's I'm assuming the problem may be the battery and you just got unlucky with a defective one.
P.S. I'm assuming 4.0.4 because thats the latest update to ICS for the T989 on T-Mobile.

The battery manager that comes with the phone identifies the display, but I've set it to lowest setting and have a dark background. And yeah both phones have their respective batteries which makes me think it's a software issue.. We just upgraded to the 2.3.6 ( I guess t-mobile is a but behind lol). But I going to try the juice defender tomorrow... It's just while I root the phone and get a custom ROM... (doing my homework before doing anything since it'll be first time)

Those apps wont really help, it basically does what you can do manually, turning off settings or putting them at low usage. Rooting is the way to go, its rather simple, once you do it, you will have wished you done it sooner. Trust me, I was in the same boat, I had just got my phone last december, the wife and I were in Vegas and my battery was horrible, I was taking lots of pictures and video, but my battery was dying. I had no way to charge it til we got back to the hotel, next day was same thing, horrible battery, this was all before ICS even was around for this device. When I got back home, I rooted my phone, to date, I have gotten a best 44 hours out of the phone. I ROM hop so I try out the variety, there is how to's and videos here and youtube, you will kick youself on how easy it truly is to root and flash. GSAM will show you in more detail what is using your battery the most, good luck with whatever you choose to do. There are many people here who can help you along the way, thats what this site is for.

Juice Defender will help a ton with you're screen being off for extended periods of time. Normally without it, I lose 30% at work without touching it. Today, I have lost 6%. The margin won't always be like that but it's a sizeable difference. Also, I have an app monitor application you can use to track rogue apps. There is also this app called Autostarts where you can disable an app from opening and it's really useful for apps that you don't need running in the background. Turning off auto sync will help as well IF you are okay with not getting every email in 5 minutes.

What kind of battery life is everyone getting?
On average, say, per hour, with moderate use how much battery do you lose?

Everyone's is gonna be completely different. Most will post in the roms what they are seeing on avg. There's to many variables that go into that to really narrow things down. Just my opinion on that.

I understand that everyone is going to be completely different, that's the point. The idea is that if people were to post a wide variety of conditions, along with their battery-related results, others can try to tweak their settings closest to what fits their needs.
Yes, it is easily found amongst the forums for individuals ROMS/kernels, but why not put together a one-stop-shop for reference?

IMO better to keep with the Roms/Kernels (Under development) or someone may mistake and try to add something to a rom that doesn't work. Just my thoughts, I understand the goal, and I'm always looking to improve upon my battery life for my use. Haven't had phone a day yet to have any real results yet to mine.. We'll see how the world chimes in on this too tho..
Current: The Peoples Rom, 69% battery remaining, 6 hrs 14 min on bat, 1 hr 20 min screen on. Just to start it off a bit.. Will update this evening.

I'm stock non rooted with fairly heavy useage and Juice Defender free and I'm sotting at about 9 hours and 15% battery

On wifi, about 4 minutes per percent of battery for screen on time + 2 hours per percent for extra screen off time. This is with the screen brightness very low though.
So, about 400 minutes of continued usage or 200 hours of standby.
Odex blue 1.2 ROM, Google Now off, report location in Maps off.

Alrighty, now we're rolling... Here's where I currently stand:
5h45m on battery - 47% left... Heavy use today though.
AOKP Rom, KToonsez kernel - undervolted and slightly underclocked.

Charging my phone now. But yesterday i got 27 hours before reaching 25%
ROM: Stock Jellybean Touchwiz (rooted of course)
Kernel: Ktoonz kernel for touchwiz (using Ktoonservative/noop stock voltages n touch boosters disabled)

I'm stock and can get 24 hours+ with about 3+ hours of screen on time easily. This is with brightness at about 80% and no battery saving options on.

So this might not be the forum but hopefully someone will take pity on me and point me in the right direction.
As u can see. This bad boy ain't even sleeping. If not for juice defender i wouldn't make it through the day with moderate use. Now I'm in the islands where there ain't much good service to begin with so this might get a Lil tricky. Also i am unrooted. If that helps. I think it's an app but i guess i need to find another app to find the app that's the culprit. Thx in advance.

[Q] What ROM do you think is the best on battery life?

I have a ROMed Galaxy Note 2 and the battery life is amazing. My son on the other hand has a stock Galaxy S3 and it's the worst battery life I've ever witnessed. It's the typical draining while in standby issue reported by many S3 users. Bottom line, his phone is getting a ROM tonight before this phone melts down. Problem is, which one do I choose? There are so many and it would take me months to read thru every post to determine which one is right for him. So for now I'm going to focus on what really matters most, battery life.
Which ROM have you read about or used that you feel is battery life winner?

I haven't been running ROMs for too long on my S3, but I'd have to say that AOKP by Task650 gave me the best battery life over some other ones I flashed.

Task560 ROM for sure.

We are lucky to have MANY great ROM's out there. There are so many great devs here that go out of their ways to make the experience better. I highly suggest trying as many as you can, because each phone, after much experience with my ROM's, are different. Make a nandroid backup and try a bunch! What I'm getting at is that there are too many well made ROM's here to pick one. Flash away. Oh and make sure you turn off google now cards and locations...that will drain your battery like no other on this phone. Best of luck!

I must say I'm running task650's AOKP build (I have been since I got the phone :good and my battery life has been nothing but immaculate. Here's a few screenies showing you my averages. Now mind you me my device and my daily operations will differ from everyone else's but still gotta give credit where credit is due. Oh btw I'm running it with tasks underwear kernel. Sorry ktoons

I think most of the roms have pretty good battery life. I'm on Vanilla Rootbox and i'm getting good battery life.

Thanks for all the input guys. Most of those mentioned were at the top of my list. Instead, I chose a "stable" Rom not mentioned here in this thread and it was buggy from the jump. I quickly bailed and went with CM10 and life is good so far.

DaRTHSTALKER is the first rom I've ever ran that I noticed a significant improvement in battery life. Very noticeable. None of the others have ever caught my attention before.

I'm on Slimbean 4.2.1 RC1 with lean kernel and I have to say it is buttery smooth and stable, fast as can be, and I'm almost two days into it with ~45% charge. Loving it

For longest time I was swearing at CM10 / CM10.1 and than I found a thread about what affect battery and now both TW and CM based roms that I use are about the same...
To get great battery life follow the simple rules:
- stay away from colour. The darker the theme / icons are the better the battery life. Some go as far as to get inverted gapps...
- no live wall paper. It will affect battery life... yes, the darker the wallpaper the better the battery life...
- turn off GPS , bluetooth , nfc and everything else that you don't need... turn it back on when you need it...
I have 15 toggle mod and I even turn off data when I don't need it. (I turn it back on once every couple of hours to get e-mail and notifications... than turn it back off... this also prevents rouge apps from dialling back home to mothership...)
- if I travel from one location to the other I toggle airplane mode on and off... this forces modem to look for strongest tower... the strogner the tower the less power you need... hence less battery consumption...
- Use Ti Backup on roted rom... unistall what you obviously don't use..
- Google apps that run that you don't know what they do... stop or unistall those that you don't need...
- Use fierwall... block everything that doesn't need to talk to internet ... less you use antenna longer the battery life...
Also, if going to new ROM wipe battery stats and let battery fully discharge couple of times. This helps as well...
Follow these simple rules and don't be surprised if your battery life doubles regardless of the rom...

While most of this makes sense, I have to disagree with discharging the battery fully. This actually reduces battery life drastically.

I agree but idea is that you let the kernel optimize it by itself.
So you do this only a few times on new rom and that's it...
As for myself I tend to plug in the S3 to charge as soon as I hit 60-70%...
(whenever I can of course - i actually keep one charger at home and one at work)
SIDENOTE:
Forgot to mention the widgets... to me they're just short-cuts and if you set them for automatic update (weather being prime example) they'll just waist battery and bandwith... (it takes about 1 sec to turn on the data from 15 toggle mod and 1 more to start the app I want updated - email weather whatever... to me this is a small price to pay for extended bat life...)

Your mileage may vary but I usually get about a day and a half or two days from one charge with the stock kernel that's included in the ROM
