[Resolved] Wanting to Update Froyo 2.1 to 2.2 Steps - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since I am a noob to all of this and still taking baby steps I need help.
I would like to update froyo 2.1 to 2.2 to my already rooted Evo 4g, rooted with Unrevoked.
What OTA trustworthy file/link should I use?
How do I proceed step wise?
And will I lose Root and does it really matter, since I can just Re-root?
Also will I lose my current flashed phone information if I update Froyo?
Thanks in advanced
Edit: Flashed to Gingerbread 2.3.3 Awesome!

If you re rooted then it's a simple matter of picking what you like from the below link and flashing it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653

If I flash will I lose any data?
Meaning will I have to reprogram the phone to work for data and phone services?

Just backup your apps in titanium backup and you'll be good to go.

Cool thanks, the apps were the least of my concerns, but I did do the titanium backup.
I actually love the cloud server/sync they offer now. It's almost transparent power wise too.

You should always wipe data, cache and dalvik cache when flashing a new rom. Yes you will lose your app's and data, but you will not have to reprogram the phone with sprint.

Any suggestions on a worthy Rom?
Is there any RUU rom for Froyo 2.2? the RUU radios work really well so far.
Oh and thanks for the valuable info so far.

Is there a reason you want froyo? There are plenty of gingerbread roms out there including stock gingerbread ones.

No your right I don't actually need Froyo, but I would like to keep a stable environment for Sprint Navagator, which is the only Bloatware I have left and I have a few applications for work I need that need 2.2 Android for, but other than those reasons I don't need Froyo.
Just a stable rom that I can flash easily with Clockwork, in recovery mode.
Thanks.

Issue Resolved....Went with Gingerbread 2.3.3 Awesome! Hands down. Then used titanium backup to restore my apps. Donating money to Gingerbread developers now.

updating rooted Desire to the latest OTA

Hey guys,
I've got the latest update OTA ready to install, but since my device is rooted I'm wondering what do I do?
I've read threads stating to just update and re root it and others say it won't go through and I'd have to disable signatures in clockwork recovery !
hence I'm confused, please help
Cheers
Jackie
Its not safe to perform official ota updates on rooted devices.
Most of the time nothing happens, you just lose root. But anything could happen from losing your custom recovery to a non booting device, which is known to happen.
If you want updated software on your phone install a custom rom.

same situation, my question is can i apply this RUU from PC, and what will happen exactly? Lose root, data?
i found this RUU RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed
you can apply that RUU but you will lose root and all of your data so back everything up beforehand.
you may also need a Goldcard depending on whether your phone was unbranded from new or not.

I know about the Goldcard. Any idea on how to do a backup, i have read about using Titanium but i found it confusing. Little help would be useful
yeah, just use Titanium and back up all user apps as a batch process.
Backuo/Restore at the top of the initial screen.
Menu button and choose Batch
Then Backup all user apps.
you can then restore them after you've flashed the RUU.
also, make sure your contacts are backed up (probably by Google / Gmail).

OK, but there is an option all apps and data. what is data? is it app data?
Just back up user apps.
You don't want to restore any system data as you are changing roms.
Also, make sure you do a nand backup to go back to if needed.

So there is still no way to just update by update.zip?
I dont want to reflash my whole phone, I got everything backed up propper
but I find it crap because its just a very small update.
Just ignore the update then, if your phone is working fine

hmm an official update from htc, great. but if you are rooted and have tried a custom rom or even many such as me, then you dont want to loose that ability to flash great custom roms, just because htc released an update.
i am not sure, but i think that some users just unrevoked (rooted) their devices, but havent installed any custom roms and dont have the joy of it. i never want go to back to original rom. my future updates would be out of a custom rom. great forum here, love it
I just use the stock rom because i'm happy with it.
I rooted my phone because some apps wont work without it. I would try a custom rom but I still remember my HD2 and all the reconfigging I had to do.
Can you flash custom roms without reconfiguring everything?
Like.. when I flashed the last update.zip (405.2) I just installed it and I could start using my phone right away after the update. thats how I like it, but im not sure (more unsure) that this will work the same when I use a custom rom right?

so you installed the latest update.zip on a rooted device? and did not loose your root functionality?
I'm willing to reroot my phone, I just wanna know if a rooted device when update could mess up !?
I wanna try custom ROMs sadly I can't due to the rebooting issue, will be sending in for repair soon this week !

Rooting your device voids your warranty just as much as flashing a custom rom would. Either way would have to use the stock ruu before you send if back so it makes no difference if your stock rooted or have a custom rom.

[Q] "Where to start " for defy ??

i think our forum is so much jumbled and crowded with soo much great stuffs
please i would like to request something to pick up for flashing and other questions . i am finding difficulty in initializing my research on my defy
Requesting your co operation to link up some threads in proper order to work with and start from some sort of START / FIRST READ ME GUIDE
sorry for the request its just i dont like my defy to get bricked (soft or hard).
Thank you
Just a question: which version of Android is your Defy running? I know most Defys run Eclair, but some are already being sold with Froyo installed. This affects directly on the flashing process: if you have Eclair, you have to make a special kind of backup. You know, custom firmwares void your warranty.
If your Defy has Froyo and you flash another Froyo ROM (or CM7, which is Gingerbread), you can easily switch back to your stock firmware if you need to send your device to repair. If your stock ROM is Eclair, and you flash Froyo or Gingerbread, without the special backup, you won't be able to downgrade.
IMO this is a good place to start. Waiting for your reply in order to send further instructions.
Iam also having the same problem. I bought mine two days ago.. And I don't know where to start from..
My defy has eclair.. And I bought it in india.. So I should backup first?

A question about that:
I have a new defy with OTA froyo update from T-Mobile USA. If I want another froyo rom, do I need to flash the sbf/firmware, or can I just do a nandroid recovery of the new rom with clockworkmod?

If you flash a new sbf without a wipe, you will keep all your apps etc, whereas you'll have to back everything up and reinstall if u do a nandroid. i recommend backing up either way.

I don't really have anything on this phone to keep since its new, data and apps can be wiped out completely.
I do want to get rid of the motoblur apps.
So this is what I plan on:
Root (already done)
Install CWM
Backup my existing rom on sdcard
Copy new rom to sdcard
Flash new rom with CWM
Say goodbye to Motoblur
I imagine I will need to do a couple of data wipes in the process. I assume before backup and before flashing.
Will this work? Motoblur gone for good?
Update:
WORKS
I highly recommend JBoogie3 roms. Quick and easy.

Is flash PC10IMG will wipe all my data(sms, call log...)?

I plan flash 2.3 to my G2, is that meas i will lost all my personal data? but waiting for OTA will not erase the data.
it won't
only if you wipe all your data everything will be lost...
If you flash a new ROM to your phone you may lose all your data but if you use an Over The Air (OTA) update then you will not lose anything. If you are very concerned about losing your data you should always use a program to back up your contacts, emails etc. I would definitely recommend titanium for that or MyBackup Free.

[Q] Instructions on updating while keeping root when s-off&clockworkmod

I rooted using "unrevoked". I currently have it set on S-Off. Currently have ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.0.2 installed.
What are the exact steps needed to get the new update while keeping rooting?
Once those steps are clearly written. Can we make sure everyone sees this thread/the correct steps for example making it a bullet/new thread. I'm NOT going to read through 300 pages to get what little information I need.

Flash the rooted version of the update. Deodexed if you want to theme/modify it, odexed otherwise.
Do a nandroid backup first, just to be safe. I would think you could just wipe cache and dalvik cache since technically it's an update. If you get bootloops, restore from your backup if you want to back up your apps/data with Titanium Backup. Then wipe data, cache and dalvik and flash again. If you've already backed up whatever you want to save, or if you don't care about saving your apps, you can go ahead and wipe everything and reflash without restoring.
EDIT: And there are directions for this, you just have to actually search.

OK, maybe its good to post this here since it relates. I have searched but didn't find any instructions covering my question:
I have downgraded my HTC Desire Z from Gingerbread to Frodo and obtained root, S-OFF, etc, using gfree. I know I can upgrade back to gingerbread and want to do this but only if I can do it without losing root. I've seen lots of posts saying gingerbread can't be rooted and one or two saying it can, but not how. [and I think these are possibly just by noobs who dont know better], and others that deal with the upgrade but simply don't say if root will be lost. I assume that if I just install the OTA update offered by HTC, that will undo everything I just did in downgrading and getting root. If I understand correctly, having root is mostly a property of the bootloader and its configuration, so is it possible to re-install gingerbread but without overwriting the bootloader so as to keep root? THANKS!

Don't accept an OTA while rooted.
Just flash a GB rooted rom or any other updated rooted rom based on GB...or ICS for that matter.
Look in the development section for your Desire.

You can't.
Before I rooted my phone I asked a guy at Sprint about it and whats good and bad, one of the things he said was you can't update unless you unroot. then you can reroot and you'll still have the updates

If I'm rooted at 2.2 version...

and software version of 3.70, how do I know what ROMs are compatible?
I'm running Warm2.2 but saw that is now a Warm 2.3, is that compatible?
What is the secret when I'm looking at a ROM that lets me know if I can run it or not?
OR, do I have to have the 4.XX version to have more options? I can't do that now can I? I'm stuck at 2.2 aren't I?

Yep, any rom for the evo 4g will work, no matter what software version it's based off of. Welcome to the world of rooting and custom roms.
S-off = any rom you want, I don't understand the confusion lately with thinking you're stuck at what version you're on or changing your unlock method, I've seen a handful of threads asking what roms are compatible with unrevoked and if they need to unroot and reroot using revolutionary or if they can only flash a 2.2 rom, where is this confusion coming from has someone somewhere in the far reaches of the interwebz told ppl they can only stay within android version X if they used root method Y or what cuz there seems to be some serious misinformation floating around somewhere cornfuzzling all these noobs
We are legion, for we are many.
I think the confusion came from the way I rooted and then having ROMs say they are a SENSE version, or gingerbread (which I never had the luxury of updating to)
I guess I'm VERY happy to find out I can do anything now, but maybe it stems from still seeing 2.2 in my settings and having to use a certain method to root that was for 2.2 only...
SO, since there is still ancient versions showing up in my phone settings, then I guess I concluded I needed to stick to ROMs for that version.
Thank You all for the clarity!!!
Just make sure you do a complete wipe, preferably with Amon Ra before you move into newer ROMS. Well, any ROM for that matter
A lot of people usually start with CWM and likely that's the recovery that you're using but like HipKat suggested AmonRA is the prefer recovery when it comes to flashing customs Roms with that said I think you might find this interesting http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1339654 is the best of both worlds... AmonRA recovery that you can flash your CWM recoveries if you needed to.

Never use ROM Manager to flash roms, you are just asking for problems. Just boot into recovery and do it manually.
