[Q] "Where to start " for defy ?? - Defy General

i think our forum is so much jumbled and crowded with soo much great stuffs
please i would like to request something to pick up for flashing and other questions . i am finding difficulty in initializing my research on my defy
Requesting your co operation to link up some threads in proper order to work with and start from some sort of START / FIRST READ ME GUIDE
sorry for the request its just i dont like my defy to get bricked (soft or hard).
Thank you

Just a question: which version of Android is your Defy running? I know most Defys run Eclair, but some are already being sold with Froyo installed. This affects directly on the flashing process: if you have Eclair, you have to make a special kind of backup. You know, custom firmwares void your warranty.
If your Defy has Froyo and you flash another Froyo ROM (or CM7, which is Gingerbread), you can easily switch back to your stock firmware if you need to send your device to repair. If your stock ROM is Eclair, and you flash Froyo or Gingerbread, without the special backup, you won't be able to downgrade.
IMO this is a good place to start. Waiting for your reply in order to send further instructions.

Iam also having the same problem. I bought mine two days ago.. And I don't know where to start from..
My defy has eclair.. And I bought it in india.. So I should backup first?

A good place to start is the wiki, it has all the starter info you need http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=File:Motorola_Defy.jpg

I also got really lost in the first days, but you just have to have the discipline and patience to read a lot, after a few days of reading the defy boards here at xda I felt ready to start modding it.

A question about that:
I have a new defy with OTA froyo update from T-Mobile USA. If I want another froyo rom, do I need to flash the sbf/firmware, or can I just do a nandroid recovery of the new rom with clockworkmod?

If you flash a new sbf without a wipe, you will keep all your apps etc, whereas you'll have to back everything up and reinstall if u do a nandroid. i recommend backing up either way.

I don't really have anything on this phone to keep since its new, data and apps can be wiped out completely.
I do want to get rid of the motoblur apps.
So this is what I plan on:
Root (already done)
Install CWM
Backup my existing rom on sdcard
Copy new rom to sdcard
Flash new rom with CWM
Say goodbye to Motoblur
I imagine I will need to do a couple of data wipes in the process. I assume before backup and before flashing.
Will this work? Motoblur gone for good?
Update:
WORKS
I highly recommend JBoogie3 roms. Quick and easy.

updating rooted Desire to the latest OTA

Hey guys,
I've got the latest update OTA ready to install, but since my device is rooted I'm wondering what do I do?
I've read threads stating to just update and re root it and others say it won't go through and I'd have to disable signatures in clockwork recovery !
hence I'm confused, please help
Cheers
Jackie
Its not safe to perform official ota updates on rooted devices.
Most of the time nothing happens, you just lose root. But anything could happen from losing your custom recovery to a non booting device, which is known to happen.
If you want updated software on your phone install a custom rom.

same situation, my question is can i apply this RUU from PC, and what will happen exactly? Lose root, data?
i found this RUU RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed
you can apply that RUU but you will lose root and all of your data so back everything up beforehand.
you may also need a Goldcard depending on whether your phone was unbranded from new or not.

I know about the Goldcard. Any idea on how to do a backup, i have read about using Titanium but i found it confusing. Little help would be useful
yeah, just use Titanium and back up all user apps as a batch process.
Backuo/Restore at the top of the initial screen.
Menu button and choose Batch
Then Backup all user apps.
you can then restore them after you've flashed the RUU.
also, make sure your contacts are backed up (probably by Google / Gmail).

OK, but there is an option all apps and data. what is data? is it app data?
Just back up user apps.
You don't want to restore any system data as you are changing roms.
Also, make sure you do a nand backup to go back to if needed.

So there is still no way to just update by update.zip?
I dont want to reflash my whole phone, I got everything backed up propper
but I find it crap because its just a very small update.
Just ignore the update then, if your phone is working fine

hmm an official update from htc, great. but if you are rooted and have tried a custom rom or even many such as me, then you dont want to loose that ability to flash great custom roms, just because htc released an update.
i am not sure, but i think that some users just unrevoked (rooted) their devices, but havent installed any custom roms and dont have the joy of it. i never want go to back to original rom. my future updates would be out of a custom rom. great forum here, love it
I just use the stock rom because i'm happy with it.
I rooted my phone because some apps wont work without it. I would try a custom rom but I still remember my HD2 and all the reconfigging I had to do.
Can you flash custom roms without reconfiguring everything?
Like.. when I flashed the last update.zip (405.2) I just installed it and I could start using my phone right away after the update. thats how I like it, but im not sure (more unsure) that this will work the same when I use a custom rom right?

I wanna try custom ROMs sadly I can't due to the rebooting issue, will be sending in for repair soon this week !

Rooting your device voids your warranty just as much as flashing a custom rom would. Either way would have to use the stock ruu before you send if back so it makes no difference if your stock rooted or have a custom rom.

[Q]Installing custom rom !

What is the simplest way to install a custom rom. Can i just go directly into nandroid backup and then install custom rom from there and i'm done?
Please, i'm totally noob so let me know. Thanks !
I'am not sure, but the answer is NO. Everyone ROM has got his own requirements.
You should read the manual to ROM which you want to get.
but i can use nandroid backup to make a backup of my official rom right? and then recover it whenever i want?

Yes, it's also wise to put the file on your pc in case you boot loop or something happens to your sd
I recommend researching whichever ROM you are thinking about installing thoroughly before flashing your first rom. Each different rom has specific instructions for flashing them. There is an excellent n00b guide for flashing a new rom to a T-mobile usa defy. Though that guide is specific to usa defies, it has an excellent step by step guide for flashing an eclair rom. It would be worth searching for and reading. It details the backup process very well.
If you plan on upgrading to 2.2, you should search for and read the guide about how to upgrade to 2.2 without losing downgradability (by higgsy, I think).

Some easy questions

(firstly sorry for my bad english)
Hey,
I have downloaded http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037076 this rom. I flashed it to my Motorolda Defy (before I had Eclair update1 .CEE). I used RSDlite. Now I have this 2.2.2-177.
Any backups, anything, I 'updated' my official Eclair and later clicked in settings 'Restore to Factory Settings' and 'Format SD-card'.
1. Is there any possibilty to downgrade back to Eclair?
2. Now I have not warranty, right? What to do to have it back?
3. When Motorola will make an official Froyo, I will have possibilty to flash it to my device (instead 2.2.2-177 nordic)?
4. Is there any good FAQ/guide for novices? About backups (what is nandroid, titanium backup, etc.), roms (how to flash, what is it, etc.), revovery, restore, wipe, bootloader and more things like it?
5. What I should do after installing this rom which I have now?
6. 2ndinit is to use instead a clockmod recovery?
Thanks, Pararocker

1 yes
2 yes, they can see you flasher a leaked rom. No chance of getting warranty back. Ones u flashed an undowngradable sbf without fix, you have to use tricks to install new sbf's.
3 normally you could.
4 nand backup is backup of system and data you can store on your sd-card.
To flash downgr rom onto a nondowngr, first root and install custom recovery, restore a nand backup of the rom you can find on the treat of that rom and install fixed sbf.
In the first post in Android dev is described how to make a fixed sbf.
There is a treat in and dev al about how to downgrade. Use search bar.
5 if you like this rom, there is nothing you have to do.
6 you can use it to speed the process of recovering for dev.
It can also more imp. run custom roms instead of those of motorola.

Thanks,
what is fixed SBF? I have read about it in nordic-177-treat, but nowhere I found information what it is.
I flashed my rom with RSDlite, using SBF file. I had to fix it (how?) before installing? Or what?
So if Motorola makes an official rom and I flash it into my device, I won't have warranty back?
No chance to have it back? (wiping all data etc and flashing an another rom, futere official rom?)
EDIT:
How to know which rom I can now install instead this which I have now?
Now I have:
-System version: Moto_Version.34.177.5.Retail.en.ND
-Firmware: 2.2.2
-Baseband: EPU93_U00.59.1
-Kernel: [email protected] #1
-Swype 2.25.67.18418

Where I should look which room I can install now? They have to have lower number to 177 or what?
eg. I know that I can't install Eclair ROM, but do I can install nordic-155? Or chineese official rom? And how to check it myself?

I have this doubt either....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966537
It's a link with all the sbf (firmware's).
An sbf is a combination of different partitions. Just read the link.
The leaked beta rom's are compiled with different checksum for 2 partitions.
At the button of the page there's a title downgrade. Follow that and there's no chance to not be able to downgrade or install possible official upgrades without loosing warranty.
If you would have flashed a undowngradeable rom, you can do flash updates the same as you would flash an undowndradeable.
Pararocker said:

Now your on an undowngradable rom. This means IF something would happen that could fall under warranty, try to restore a nandbackup and flash a fixed official rom. It could be that they discover it, i don't know what they do with returned phone's. Someone already posted that he got his phone back with a new motherboard because he ****ed something up.
You can flash all leaked and beta sbf's now without having to worry about warranty.

[Q] Installing Stock Gingerbread Sense ROM?

edit: Sorry for posting in the wrong section! someone move this please
Hi!
What's the best way to install the latest stock ROM for HTC Desire Z?
I have rooted, installed hboot-eng, s-off, flashed clockworkMod recovery and installed cyanogenmod 7.
Now I'd like to try the current (Gingerbread) official ROM from HTC.
is it safe to flash with the hboot-eng and s-off?
Where can I get it?
Thanks!
Lol
The XDA app now has a thanks button. Please use it
I dont think the section is named Q&A.
Then there is the search button. Its free and wont take you to court for abusing it.
You're in the wrong section, buddy.
I believe you just flash the latest update or install one of the official ones and take the OTA update fromt here. It'll take you back to s-on and that's it.
Ooops sorry I wanted to post in the Q&A... was on the wrong Tab I think.
Anyway. I tried the search but it said it's currently unavailable. I tried searching with Google. I looked through all the suggested posts after I entered the subject.
I really tried to find the info. This forum is a rough place for a noob.
Try and flash virtuous sense its the stock rom optimized
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042
I tried Virtuous (and many other ROMs)... CM is the best imo, except it's missing a good dialer.
I just like to try the original ROM.
Meanwhile I recovered a backup with the stock Froyo ROM and started the OTA update, but I fails to install. It says something like "E:cannot mount SDARD:downloads/(long file name).zip. Aborting installation" in ClockworkMod recovery.
Do I have to uninstall the recovery image before updating OTA?
Well that is the stock rom with under the hood things done. Also I don't know why you would want to go back to froyo
I don't want to go back to Froyo (that worked) but to Gingerbread.
It's just out of interest actually. Having a go at it to see how the new original ROM performs.
The forum search is working again and I found some threads, but none of them describe how to install the OTA update on a rooted device.
Am I right by saying ClockworkMod does not work to install a Stock HTC update, I I'd need to revert back to the original Recovery image?
Try renaming the file to the original name? PCIMG10.zip or whatever and use the stock bootloader?
If you want complete stock without the bloatware, that's what virtuous sense is for (not unity)

Virtuous is OK but I had some crashes with it in the past. Right now I installed Virtuous Unity with Sense 3.0. I'm gona keep it some time as it behaves good so far (except for automatically installing every crap app I had in the past - eventually I remember to log in to Google only after disabling automatic restore next time)
I'd still be interested to know
- Where to get and how to flash the original HTC Gingerbread ROM
- Why the OTA update fails to install in ClockworkMod Recovery
- Some other things that may need a separate thread.
Generally, I'm sorry for being a noob but I'm really interested in learning this stuff. I hope I'm not bothering you guys.
Thanks to all you devs for what you do!
(I made a dedicated "Thank you" thread once but it got deleted in immediately)
Thanks for all the answers to far! I'm going to test drive Sense Unity now.
cheers

[Resolved] Wanting to Update Froyo 2.1 to 2.2 Steps

Since I am a noob to all of this and still taking baby steps I need help.
I would like to update froyo 2.1 to 2.2 to my already rooted Evo 4g, rooted with Unrevoked.
What OTA trustworthy file/link should I use?
How do I proceed step wise?
And will I lose Root and does it really matter, since I can just Re-root?
Also will I lose my current flashed phone information if I update Froyo?
Thanks in advanced
Edit: Flashed to Gingerbread 2.3.3 Awesome!
If you re rooted then it's a simple matter of picking what you like from the below link and flashing it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=653
If I flash will I lose any data?
Meaning will I have to reprogram the phone to work for data and phone services?

Just backup your apps in titanium backup and you'll be good to go.
Cool thanks, the apps were the least of my concerns, but I did do the titanium backup.
I actually love the cloud server/sync they offer now. It's almost transparent power wise too.

You should always wipe data, cache and dalvik cache when flashing a new rom. Yes you will lose your app's and data, but you will not have to reprogram the phone with sprint.
Any suggestions on a worthy Rom?
Is there any RUU rom for Froyo 2.2? the RUU radios work really well so far.
Oh and thanks for the valuable info so far.

Is there a reason you want froyo? There are plenty of gingerbread roms out there including stock gingerbread ones.
No your right I don't actually need Froyo, but I would like to keep a stable environment for Sprint Navagator, which is the only Bloatware I have left and I have a few applications for work I need that need 2.2 Android for, but other than those reasons I don't need Froyo.
Just a stable rom that I can flash easily with Clockwork, in recovery mode.
Thanks.
Issue Resolved....Went with Gingerbread 2.3.3 Awesome! Hands down. Then used titanium backup to restore my apps. Donating money to Gingerbread developers now.
