Hi!
What's the best way to install the latest stock ROM for HTC Desire Z?
I have rooted, installed hboot-eng, s-off, flashed clockworkMod recovery and installed cyanogenmod 7.
Now I'd like to try the current (Gingerbread) official ROM from HTC.
is it safe to flash with the hboot-eng and s-off?
Where can I get it?

I believe you just flash the latest update or install one of the official ones and take the OTA update fromt here. It'll take you back to s-on and that's it.

I tried Virtuous (and many other ROMs)... CM is the best imo, except it's missing a good dialer.
I just like to try the original ROM.
Meanwhile I recovered a backup with the stock Froyo ROM and started the OTA update, but I fails to install. It says something like "E:cannot mount SDARD:downloads/(long file name).zip. Aborting installation" in ClockworkMod recovery.
Do I have to uninstall the recovery image before updating OTA?
Well that is the stock rom with under the hood things done. Also I don't know why you would want to go back to froyo
I don't want to go back to Froyo (that worked) but to Gingerbread.
It's just out of interest actually. Having a go at it to see how the new original ROM performs.
The forum search is working again and I found some threads, but none of them describe how to install the OTA update on a rooted device.
Am I right by saying ClockworkMod does not work to install a Stock HTC update, I I'd need to revert back to the original Recovery image?
Try renaming the file to the original name? PCIMG10.zip or whatever and use the stock bootloader?
If you want complete stock without the bloatware, that's what virtuous sense is for (not unity)

Virtuous is OK but I had some crashes with it in the past. Right now I installed Virtuous Unity with Sense 3.0. I'm gona keep it some time as it behaves good so far (except for automatically installing every crap app I had in the past - eventually I remember to log in to Google only after disabling automatic restore next time)
I'd still be interested to know
- Where to get and how to flash the original HTC Gingerbread ROM
- Why the OTA update fails to install in ClockworkMod Recovery
- Some other things that may need a separate thread.
Generally, I'm sorry for being a noob but I'm really interested in learning this stuff. I hope I'm not bothering you guys.

Hello,
My HTC Desire got an update today.... However, when I try to apply it, it will progress almost halfway until it shows me the little droid guy with an exclamation mark.
I am on stock Froyo currently, however I am rooted using Unrevoked3. I was told I could still update and it would even retain root in the future. However, it does not seem to be the case.
So what would my options here be?
I do wish to retain root, and I do wish to update my phone. Mainly, because I hope it will fix the WiFi issue (WiFi goes into sleep mode in lock screen, regardless of the settings, thus I can't use Skype properly.)
Any advice and/or help would really be appreciated.

since when did we become so intolerant to new members guys?? keep in mind there was a time when none of us knew that you couldnt flash ota's with a custom recovery. someone had to tell us all
Flash the update again it should work. But I'd use an RUU and get back to stock.
Hey every. Sorry if this question is already answered and it is a repost. How can i uninstall Cyanogenmod 7 RC2 from my Incredible, but still keep it rooted? Would the same way work for other ROMs as well, or does each ROM have a different way to remove them? Thank you in advance for your help.
If you made a backup then you can easily restore.
If you didn't, then you can flash the stock incredible ROM.
You will continue to stay rooted unless you take additional steps to unroot your phone.
Also I think you may have a misconception of how the ROM's work. These aren't installed on top of your phone, they remove the old one and replace it with whatever ROM you flash. Of course as long as you made a backup before you flashed then how your phone was before the flash will be right there if you ever choose to restore.
I did backup before I installed the Cyanogenmod 7. How do i 'recover'? Also, if i were to flash, would this take me back to being unrooted?
The way I understood it you can use ROM manager to load the Nandroid you created before flashing CM7, bringing back all your settings/text/calls etc you had before flashing your new rom. I've yet to attempt to go back to stock so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
You'll keep root unless to take the steps to go from s-off to s-on, and flash the stock RUU. Restoring a nandroid will restore the backup to the exact point the backup was made, so make regular backups!

Ok. So i havent done anything because I am extremely busy, but now i have some time to get this done. As it is, I'm going to have to unroot my phone, putting it back to stock. How do i do this so that the s-off goes to s-on, and make sure everything is done properly? Thx for all your help
pretty sure you just flash the stock ruu and then run the unrevoked s-on tool.
i would run a factory reset before running the ruu and then again after just to make sure you are totally bone stock.
Should I use Rom manager to flash or use something else? Sorry for all the questions, just want to do this without problems.

If you made a backup power off the phone and reboot it into recovery. Go to the "Back Up and Restore" Tab and then restore. Choose the date and you are back.

I did some searching but could not find a specific answer for my question, and please excuse my lack of rooting/rom knowledge.
I rooted my Evo 4G a few months back and want to know if I can update it to the latest version of android without loosing my Factory HTC sense?
Also I think I rooted with unrevoked???? and I was looking at ROM Manager in-case I had to loose my HTC Sense to update, I would like to find a close HTC Sense rom to put back, but from what I found ROM Manager does not work with a phone rooted with unrevoked. How can I tell if that is what I used?

Rom manager will work with whatever root method you used; it just doesn't work with amon_ra recovery. And if you want sense on android 2.3, head over tot he development section and look up a "gingersense" rom.
Just backup your rom in recovery, then flash the new one.
Check out Fresh Evo rom by Flipz its now been updated to 2.3 which is gingerbread what it sounds like you want. But be sure to read the op because it only works correctly with auto dim if you have an Epson panel. Just be sure to read it and decide if its for you. Also I have used Rom Manager and I also used unrevoked forever and I had no issues. Hope this helps.

Also the Fresh beta is very very buggy with regards to the camera. My video was basically unwatchable. But aside from that, 2 thumbs WAY THE **** UP it's an awesome ROM.

Yes. Go to the link below and download the leaked Gingerbread rom with HTC Sense. Afterwards, go into recovery and make a nandroid of your current setup. After that, you can either wipe cache & dalvik and flash atop of your current rom or do a full wipe and then flash. If you decide you want to go back to what you had, simply go into recovery and restore the backup you made. If you didn't do a nandroid backup, go to the second link below and download one of the shipped roms for the EVO.

If you rooted your device with UnrEVOked, then more than likely, your recovery is ClockworkMod. ClockworkMod gets the job done, but I recommend using amon RA v2.3. I believe it is more stable and I like the menu layout. Still, it's all a matter of preference. As for ROM Manager, I'm not a fan of it. It is far too easy to go into recovery to manually flash roms, however, ROM Manager does work with amon RA in that it can swap recoveries for you as well as flash roms.
How can I tell if that is what I used?

The easiest way is to start ROM Manager. There should be a section that tells you what your recovery is.

Just a question: which version of Android is your Defy running? I know most Defys run Eclair, but some are already being sold with Froyo installed. This affects directly on the flashing process: if you have Eclair, you have to make a special kind of backup. You know, custom firmwares void your warranty.
If your Defy has Froyo and you flash another Froyo ROM (or CM7, which is Gingerbread), you can easily switch back to your stock firmware if you need to send your device to repair. If your stock ROM is Eclair, and you flash Froyo or Gingerbread, without the special backup, you won't be able to downgrade.
IMO this is a good place to start. Waiting for your reply in order to send further instructions.

I have a new defy with OTA froyo update from T-Mobile USA. If I want another froyo rom, do I need to flash the sbf/firmware, or can I just do a nandroid recovery of the new rom with clockworkmod?

If you flash a new sbf without a wipe, you will keep all your apps etc, whereas you'll have to back everything up and reinstall if u do a nandroid. i recommend backing up either way.

I don't really have anything on this phone to keep since its new, data and apps can be wiped out completely.
I do want to get rid of the motoblur apps.
So this is what I plan on:
Root (already done)
Install CWM
Backup my existing rom on sdcard
Copy new rom to sdcard
Flash new rom with CWM
Say goodbye to Motoblur
I imagine I will need to do a couple of data wipes in the process. I assume before backup and before flashing.
Will this work? Motoblur gone for good?

Don't you have the rom zip saved? It should say what rom it is. Although you should know what you are flashing.

I would suggest searching the Q&A thread for all this. You should read up before you start installing roms or doing any mods to your phone.

Might I interject here? If the only reason you want to go back to stock recovery is to get the OTA updates, I personally don't think you need to. Typically, Freeza has the most up-to-date Stock, Rooted Rom over in his thread. In my case, he usually has it well before I get the OTA notification from Sprint. If you think his thread is daunting to look at, you really only want to flash one of the following (I always remove direct links to the Roms out of respect for the dev's):

The MC3 Rom is a leak of a new OTA that might come out soon (or it'll be incorporated in a future OTA). The MB1 Rom is the most current, stock Rom. All you have to do is flash it and you're updated. If you need help with how to flash it, you can look to my post over here. Since you're going from 4.1.1 to 4.1.2, I'd recommend a "clean install" (step 5 in my instructions) just to minimize the chance of Force Closes, but you should be good if you want to do a "dirty flash" (only wipe cache and dalvik cache). If you dirty-flash, though, any and all troubleshooting will boil down to doing a clean install and seeing if the problem persists.
Also, CNexus has written up a really good OTA Guide to help you understand the whole OTA thing more and to recognize your options. You can check out his post over here.

Edit: It might also be good to update your Recovery before proceeding. Depending on how old your CWM is, it might be best to get an updated one (with hopefully fewer bugs). Thankfully, Naddict has created updates that are flashable from the Recovery itself. All you have to do is download the one you want (I'm using TWRP 2.5.0.0, but CWM is fine, too) and flash it in your custom Recovery, then reboot into recovery again.

I'm going to go over your post in more detail (hopefully) this weekend.
I tried flashing some different ROMs to see what they were like. I was not impressed, so I went back to stock.
Can you tell me something? If I use TWRP to back up everything, I still need to install GAPPS, right? Then I need to do something with GAPPS and Platinum Backup before I wipe/re-install to keep all/most of my programs/settings, right? Then run GAPPS again after I flash the new ROM?

Yeah, you can only have one recovery installed at once. I use TWRP, others use CWM. In my opinion, it shouldn't matter too much. They're both good and as far as I'm aware, the newest of each are relatively bug-free. The only thing is once you have backups for one, you can't restore them with the other. This isn't that big of a deal, but just an FYI.

I'll break your questions here:
As far as I'm aware, all TouchWiz Roms include GAPPS in them by default. Of the flip side, no AOSP Roms will include them. This is because Google has asked dev's to not include them (in a Rom) unless specifically approved by Google. Samsung has gotten that approval for their TW framework, so any Rom based on TW can (and do) include GAPPS. If you're in doubt and the Rom doesn't say, first re-read the thread, as it's a common question. Then you can just flash the Rom without GAPPS and load up your phone. If GAPPS is included, you'll have a play store. If not, then you can just reboot into recovery and install it. Easy as pie.
I believe you mean Titanium Backup (another precious metal). Using TiBk, I actually have an automatic restore done every morning at 3am. Then if I decide to flash a new Rom, I always have an up-to-date backup of my apps. I never restore system apps, as that's just asking for trouble when switching Roms. I always back up my messages and phone log, but nothing that's red in TiBk. And for most apps, you don't have to restore data (only the app). I only restore data for games and apps like Hulu so I don't have to log in again.

Yeah stock based roms will include GAPPS, AOSP roms cant because they arent officially licensed to distribute them...
As for the original question, I think I have it figured out. If you go to /system/build.prop and open that file, the great majority of devs will modify the relevant lines to the name of their custom roms. On cm roms theres a line called "cm.version=", which devs will usually modify that on a CM rom
The name is in there somewhere...could be changed on a couple lines, or on ALL the relevant lines, but it will be changed most of the time

All you need to do is follow the guide. You can download the MB1 firmware from freezas thread, and then flash an updated version of your rom. If you are on stock rooted, then you can flash one of freezas plain stock rooted roms over what you have (i would recommend a backup first though)
Just a small correction Gapps strictly refers to Google made apps (maps, play store, books, etc) you usually only flash these when working with AOSP roms. You sound like your talking about Touchwiz roms and thus your not loading all your apps through gapps, because Gapps are already included with Touchwiz roms. What you are referring to is reloading all your apps through Google Play Store and using the Google restore feature.

Yes! I'm talking about:
1) Backing up everything on my Galaxy S3
2) Installing other ROMs (sometimes stock, sometimes AOSP)
(side question: "stock" = "TouchWiz"???)
3) Magically re-installing *all* of my apps in the new ROM by clicking a single button
To do that, I'll need to use the "Google restore" feature?

Titanium backup is what I use. Paid version and you dont have to click ok for each app

You don't have to hit ok for each app when you use google restore the correct way. It automatically reloads your apps on your device. TB is a great also but never restore data it is the root of most issues caused when people use it.
