Carrier IQ busted on video: records keystrokes, web traffic - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

this just came into my news feed..smh
http://androidcommunity.com/carrier...130/?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews

Must be a bit embarrassing when Carrier IQ PR says publicly that the software does not record keystrokes, then it's shown doing it by the same guy they threatened to sue.
Whoops!

This definitely explains why Carrier IQ PR was so defensive over Trev's findings. Isn't this a direct violation of privacy?

I saw Trevor's video yesterday but I figured it was already over here somewhere. Thanks for posting it for others to see.

Lol I just emailed engadget, gizmodo, cnn, kvoa, and kgun9 with the info on this CarrierIQ crap. If more people demand answers about what CarrierIQ is doing please contact other sites, news organizations and tell whats up, mmk.

We went to CarrierIQ before and all they said was that nothing of importance was gathered and it was there to monitor weak signal areas.
But, this video surely shows different. I am betting this is the Government wanting to monitor everything for security purposes.

I'd really like to know why it is sending out the content of my text messages. How does that allow the carrier and/or manufacturer improve their product?

The Patriot Act pretty much has removed all of the safe guards we once had as citizens of America...
Not much chance we will ever get our privacy rights back as they once were...

It doesn't... But if you say something like... I have the materials to build the bomb, or I just got 20 kilos of uncut, the Feds raid you!

Nice .. I'm happy to see this getting some press at media hub like Forbes. Hopefully it will get picked up by more of the mainstream media outlets. If the average mobile phone user gets wind of what CIQ is doing there's going to be a serious ****storm I think. People get wicked over their privacy, and rightly so. Meanwhile, Verizon will kick back and laugh about the whole thing while they pick up more customers and count their benjamins.

I'm late to all this and I just googled the company, first thing I read was this:
With Carrier IQ they do. Carrier IQ’s Mobile Service Intelligence solution eliminates guesswork by automatically providing accurate, real-time data direct from the source – your customers' handsets.
In the press statement they contradict this lol.

Gonna have to disagree. The patriot act cannot supercede the bill of rights. Someone just needs to take the patriot act to the supreme court.

Carrier IQ Rootkit

So after Carrier IQ sent a cease and desist to one of our own, reminding us they exist in the first place, do any of the roms remove the spyware yet?

The roms posted here do have it removed (at least the ones I've seen). It will say noCIQ as a feature.

As many of you know TrevE has helped to discover CIQ problems that were prevalent throughout a plethora of devices. I urge you all to read this article and please help spread the word: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/carrier-iq-sues-treve/
Petition: http://www.change.org/petitions/tel...iq-to-leave-treve-along-and-stop-tracking-you
BREAKING NEWS!
TREV WINS
Mountain View, CA – November 23, 2011 – As, of today, we are withdrawing
our cease and desist letter to Mr. Trevor Eckhart. We have reached out to Mr.
Eckhart and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) to apologize. Our action
was misguided and we are deeply sorry for any concern or trouble that our letter
may have caused Mr. Eckhart. We sincerely appreciate and respect EFF’s work
on his behalf, and share their commitment to protecting free speech in a rapidly
changing technological world.
We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the functionality of Carrier IQ’s
software, what it does not do and what it does:
- Does not record your keystrokes.
- Does not provide tracking tools.
- Does not inspect or report on the content of your communications, such as
the content of emails and SMSs.
- Does not provide real-time data reporting to any customer.
- Finally, we do not sell Carrier IQ data to third parties.
Our software is designed to help mobile network providers diagnose critical
issues that lead to problems such as dropped calls and battery drain.
Here’s what our software does:
- Our software makes your phone work better by identifying dropped calls
and poor service.
- Our software identifies problems that impede a phone’s battery life.
- Our software makes customer service quicker, more accurate, and more
efficient.
- Our software helps quickly identify trending problems to help mobile
networks prevent them from becoming more widespread.
We look forward to a healthy and robust discussion with EFF that we believe will
be helpful to us, to our customers, and to consumers that use mobile devices.
We welcome feedback on our products and understand that Mr. Eckhart and
other developers like him play an important role by raising questions about the
complicated and technical aspects of the mobile ecosystem.

Can every one please sign this petition. Htc's ceo said in may no more locked bootloaders. Yet the vivid has one http://www.groubal.com/htc-vivid-has-locked-bootloader-contrary-to-statements-by-the-company/#sign
DUDE!! WTF?
Sure lock bootloaders suck big time, but WRONG FORUM!
EDIT: This has nothing to do with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus
And these online petitions have about as much impact as shouting your demands while standing in an empty field.
Manufacturer execs don't hold boardroom meetings to discuss how many geeks petition on the internet.
Total waste of time.
On the contrary... In recent time online action has changed the course of several ruthless dictators and in the US petitions made banks reverse policies....

Also, I think there's a lot more people that care about bank policies than people who care about locked bootloaders. So even if those were affected by petitions, the amount of people signing them are probably much higher than the size of bootloader petitions.

All HTC devices will still be locked from the factory, you then unlock them using the tool on HTCs website. Petition is therefore null and void

Yeah, but it was a lot more than a bunch of angry nerds. It was everyone with a debit card. This is a petition for one measly device (that belongs to a different forum) and 99% of the people who own it don't even know what a bootloader is! Move on. Nothing to see here.

I don't think it's ironic at all. The amount of people signing a petition against locked bootloaders is not going to have an effect. It's too small compared to the number of actual phone users, most of whom have no idea what a bootloader is.
Additionally, in this specific forum, it doesn't affect people because this is a samsung galaxy nexus forum, and the galaxy nexus isn't relevant to the petition as it doesn't have a locked bootloader, nor is it an htc phone.
The only form of protest that a business understands is abstinence.
If you want to protest, do not buy. It is as simple as that. No amount of signatures on a petition is going to sway a company.

Your phone has to be more than rooted to get rid of CarrierIQ, it needs to have a custom ROM as well that states that it has CIQ removed. Unnamed ROM is the best I have used so far.
But if they want to know something, they will find a way. I think, however, we should not make it easy for them.

Actually you can disable CIQ once you are rooted without needing a custom ROM.
the worst part about ciq and other non government agencies collecting data is that they are used by the fbi and cia to share info... which is illegal through direct channels. also, a third party collecting our info and delivering it to the carriers is totally unacceptable. theres tons of threads in the OG epic forums... as thats where konane first found and decided to kill CIQ. i honestly wonder if all the anti-ciq stuff really started there... then the tech pundit sites reported what was in these forums as usual... then the mainstream noticed... idunno. as far as plots to take over the world/bring down systems... keep it analog like good music. all the major telecoms have an open door policy w the feds... so its not like they would need CIQ for normal investigations... and they have a grace period to get warrants after they look at the info... patriot acts sealed the fate of privacy and liberty in this country. all because of a now dead boogeyman living in a cave... good job america... something about a jackboot on a human head... forever...

It's the FBI. You don't think while they are combing through all that data while investigating CIQ they won't "stumble" upon certain things? Or mirror those servers? Or realize how useful to them CIQ is and say they've found nothing wrong with what CIQ or the carriers are doing?
Do you think for a moment the FBI isn't already using CIQ as a resource to catch 'terrorists'? Like how the airlines use full body scanners and the TSA to catch 'terrorists' with the same high (lmao!) efficiency.

Not saying you think any of that, just making a point. I'm pretty sure most of us are on the same page with this crap.
I think even if it is big brother watching over us, who cares? For the 99.99999999% of the US population, nothing your talking about is that important or a danger, for the small fraction of the folks that this applies to, i welcome it. I do however take issue with the fact that once the lid was blown off, how the company responded (legal action against Treve) and their continued un-truth's. Do we really think that this sort of monitoring isn't taking place now? Pretty much anytime you use a computer/IT resource for any company or agency, you consent to monitoring, the difference is declaration.

Actually the code may be embedded deeper than we thought. Not just at the system or kernel level, but further. I'm no microprocessor engineer but doesn't almost every chip have instruction sets or at least some sort of code written into it? Because when CIQ itself says one of the 3 methods of loading it on the device is at the hardware level - that's what it sounds like to me. Literally the chips are programed with CIQ in the code.
Remove that.
then we would have to disable it in drivers

Oh man, here we go with the "I don't have anything to hide so why should I care" section of this conversation.
I'm not embarrassed about having sex but I sure as hell am not going to let you watch. It's called privacy. Has nothing to do with having things to hide, it has to do with the basic human right to have our own space, time, thoughts, gadgets, property, voice, opinion, and so on.
There are no saints either. Everybody has lied, cheated, stolen, done something wrong that would get them in trouble. Sometimes it was a mistake or even an accident. Does that mean black helicopters should have descended on you to whisk you away to a 5x5 cell without trial? No, and why without trial? Because at this point they don't need a warrant and as per the Patriot Act you don't even have to be charged with something to be held for, well, forever. So no trial is the next logical step.
Just a little interesting fact, the US Patriot Act is actually an acronym for "Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act"
just calling out the fact that more than likely this already takes place and we didn't even know it before and how many CIQ's were there before them? Also, I think you are making the same similar leap. CIQ is step one, step 2 is no trial/minority report type tactics? I agree that privacy when possible should be maintained, but lets not be naive and think that it hasn't already happened.

Agreed, and I believe this was a huge oversight on their part. The point i was trying to make is there are plenty of other spaces where the privacy is willing given away with little notification and facebook is one of them. Hell they have been told they are to comply with any audits for the next 20 years.

Ugh, that argument just makes me sick. Those agencies are trying to protect their livelihood, which comes from protecting us, but it's not the same thing. Police detectives get promotions partly based on their case closure rates, that means they have self interest in closing cases that might not be quite airtight. Because who doesn't want a promotion, with the prestige and money that comes with it. The CIA was certain iraq had WMD's, and was trying to obtain yellowcake uranium from Niger, because blockbuster findings like that lead to more funding, which means more turf for those section directors. They aren't all bad obviously, on the contrary I'm certain most of them want to do the right thing. It's the few that don't because they care more about their career than anything else, or the guy that is trying to do the right thing but simply gets it wrong. Mistakes happen, data gets misread or incorrectly analyzed, and people suffer for it. I don't want to be that unlucky person, so I don't want that crap operating on my phone.

That, my friend, is nothing but the truth. I'm afraid we've let liberty be plundered & mauraded for too long to ever get back to the vision our founding fathers had for this great country.

Well....it's not like megaupload DIDNT have a bunch of pirated stuff.
But i think anonymous just got played. Shutting down megaupload shortly before the SOPA vote...you have to expect an anonymous attack. Which in this light makes it look like they're supporting piracy. And attacking government sites... i hate to say it but it might just scare the legislators into voting FOR sopa.

...and it's not like knives haven't killed thousands of people. Want to outlaw knives? Are all owners of knives suspect?
Do not conflate a tool with its use.

I'm still not so sure about that. A number of them were scared into dropping support once they realized that had no idea what was actually going on in the bill or on the internet for that matter. The public backlash was pretty tangible. If things get more serious protests would likely get more intense and the backlash would likely be epic.
Do I think that means that SOPA/PIPA have been defeated? Tough question. Chances are bills called "SOPA" and/or "PIPA" will likely never get passed...but I think it's not unlikely that they will be dismantled into pieces and stuffed into "feed the poor orphans" bills, "job creation" bills and "unemployment extension" bills....what kind of heartless prick would vote against unemployment benefit extension, jobs creation and feeding poor orphans?
...only honest politicians. Good luck finding one of those let alone enough to keep something named like that from passing.
Well, as you all know the government only works for the rich. So, when the rich think there precious profits might be damaged they will arrest you. That is exactly what happened with pirate bay. They forced a foreign government to arrest people who hadnt committed a crime in their own country.
For the record I use megaupload all the time to download roms. I think we all do. They are far from pirated so hopefully they will see the site has a great legitimate purpose.

Let's Stop Apple!

I'm sick of Apple attacking our Android vendors with ridiculous law suits over patents that should never have been allowed in the first place. Data tapping? What's next, patenting fire? Most of their so called "innovations" have been around long before their patenting. They were never patented because they were meant to be real innovations, for vendors, developers, and end users alike to share, use freely and improve the user experience.
Let's do our part in trying to save our beloved vendors from Apple.
All you need to do is sign this petition started by Austin Michael here: http://www.change.org/petitions/apple-inc-stop-filing-lawsuits-and-trying-to-cut-off-competition?utm_campaign=petition_page&utm_medium=twitter&utm_source=share_petition or call Apple at 1 (800) 275-2273 and tell them how you feel about this, ask them to stop, or even question why.
Please, don't insult, harass, or even give any representative any attitude. This should be done peacefully, and respectfully. Remember that just because they work for Apple, doesn't make them any less of a person. They are humans like you and me doing their jobs.
Leave what any representative has told you in the comments. Tell me what you think and how you think we should go about this. Twitter? Google+? You may repost this topic anywhere you would like.

Molotov coktails aside, I don't think there is much we can do.
Talking to some CS reps isn't going to do anything.
Molotov cocktails on the other hand...those make a statement.

I think if enough people do it, we'll have some sort of impact. It's just an idea though.

Just filed a Better Business Bureau complaint against Apple Inc. that Apple employee Tim Cook stopped me from purchasing a Galaxy Nexus device. Completely true, but I'm curious if anyone in the BBB chain will catch it or if some poor complaints rep in Cupertino is going to have to deal with it.

nah, but I'll smile a little imagining the look on someone's face when they make the connection.
What about coordinating a "mass call-in" to Apple's customer service lines for an entire day or go into Apple stores and just ask a bunch of redundant questions, preventing actual customers from getting service.
I have an idea, go to every store that carries Apple products and buy one of their devices, open the packaging, and then immediately return it.
I just think we need to disrupt their business as much as we possibly can. I feel we have sat around long enough. And while we're at it, we should go to our state capitols and complain about government as well. You know, since we're going to be out and about anyways.
Hey everyone. I'm an avid android user and have a galaxy nexus myself. I also work for apple support and I can confirm that calling this number will not do anything. You'll get people who dont even know what you're talking about when you mention these court cases
