[Feedback] Any interest in Automated root of stock ROM (w/o ODIN or ROM Flash)? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I have some scripts that I wrote for LG Optimus S to do a fully automated root/unroot of the stock ROM.
I adapted them to work with the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.
This would root the phone using your EXISTING stock ROM. No need to use ODIN or mess with custom recoveries, kernels, or ROMs.
Everything would be your existing stock (ROM, zImage-kernel+initramfs, etc), except you'd have ROOT, so it shouldn't suffer from LOS (unless you had LOS with stock to start with)
Looking for feedback. If there is any interest I can clean it up and post the package.
EDIT:
Here you go:

Let me know if there are any problems and I will try and fix them quickly.

I could see interest in something like this.
I recall multiple threads asking "will the epic touch ever get a more conventional root?" so if you can pull it off I could definitely see the demand.

I remember reading about this root method on the AC forums. I wouldn't be interested myself, as I want more from a rooted device, but I'd imagine there would be a reasonable number of people who only want root for wifi tethering and certain apps that require it and don't care about custom recovery and kernels/ROMs.

Ill be the first to test it.

I still have my Optimus S, have to use it now and then as a backup, lol. In response to your question, YES. There are many who have not rooted yet as they think Odin is to much/confusing to do

I don't think it's too confusing, I just don't want to have to flash ANYTHING to get root. I have had ZERO problems with my phone. Not a single LOS, no random game closes, nothing. I don't want to risk flashing a kernel, even the stock pulled, and potentially stirring something up and having to deal with LOS and whatever else. Not worth it to me.
@OP- can you make it Mac compatible pleaseeeee?

Assuming you install "adb" on Mac, you can use the (included) manual rooting instructions (see Reference Section B)
It should be much simpler than other manual instructions as you still are getting 95% of the automation through scripts. Just a little typing to kick things off.

I would test it.

Probably not a big deal for many folks on XDA, but this method will NOT trigger the Yellow Triangle nor will it increase your ODIN flash count.
There are, of course, ways to address those annoyances when using other methods.

There is a software fix for yellow triangle which should account for most sprint stores but I always welcome more solutions

I found a conventional root. Google "doomlord root" or http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-anything-try-doomlords-easy-rooting-toolkit/
It works perfectly for the epic touch. No flashing required. I used it because i wanted full control but loved stock.

Hey - good work sfhub!
Could someone post a system dump of their /system after running this and achieving root with the stock kernel without CWM?

This is great. I was wondering why someone hadn't done something like this earlier. Many thanks

I ran across this problem with one of my tabs, but not both.
If I accessed CWM using the power and Vol+ key CWM would boot, but fail at flashing.
Go to advanced, reboot recovery
Then try to flash the kernal, then rom.
Im about to post the link to the "package" that has the zimage so people can flash the kernal via heimdall.

So I applied the .so file from the voodoo kernal thread, and rotation works on this ROM. It's also pairing with my bluetooth keyboard folio, so that's win. I pink puffy heart the browser, too. It's fun.

OK, first off.....NOT MY PORT.
But I did stay at a holiday in last night.
This is a cdma cm7 gingerbread port, in a way its kinda a hybrid build. I myself am working on stripping out all the cm7 stuff, fixing camera, apps, weird touchscreen bugs, etc.
I'm kinda shooting for an aosp-ish build, however, I am waiting on permission from original developer to publish any changes I make.
3g and wifi do work.

[ROM](2-7-13)ODIN ONE CLICKS for the SPRINT+ CSPIRE GS3 (LJ7 LI3 LEN) (LJ5 LL1 MA5)

Anyone comin from the Epic 4g Touch should know what this is. For those who don't, its a full stock tar with root loaded in an executable one-click package. This will not add to the custom flash count.
LJ7 Jellybean
There are two versions of Jellybean LJ7. One will wipe all data including internal SD. Performing a factory reset in recovery is recommended prior to use unless you're flashing the version that wipes data. If you are coming from a ICS touchwiz based rom and flashing Jellybean, the factory reset is probably not needed. Just wipe cache/dalvik if there are any issues.
Flash Count Reset Edition
These are unrooted and will NOT wipe data. These will reset your custom flash count before rebooting into the system. Each storage capacity will have its own one click. Be sure to pick the one that corresponds to your phone's storage capacity. YOU WILL BRICK YOUR PHONE IF YOU PICK INCORRECTLY. Wiping data prior to flashing is recommended.
LEN/LI3 ICS
There are two ICS versions as well. LI3 and the original LEN. Neither of these will wipe data. Doing a factory reset is a must if you are downgrading from jellybean.
Note that the stock recovery will wipe your internal storage too. This is why I recommend wiping beforehand so you can use cwm/twrp and preserve your internal sd.
DOWNLOAD FOR SPRINT
These are packed in self-extracting archives so extract before use.
You'll need a pc running windows with Samsung drivers installed

[Q] Help! Totally bricked my SG3 SGH-T999 using Mobile ODIN

I was trying to unroot my TMO SG3 SGH-T999 so I can exchange it under warranty. I was following the instructions here, but using mobile ODIN instead of the Windows version, as I am on a Mac (OS X 10.7.5). I found two ROMs on my external SD - Liquid Smooth JB and the Stock ROM - so I thought, let's try to flash the Liquid Smooth JB just for fun, while I'm at it. When I tried to do this before using CWM Recovery, it would load to the Liquid Smooth JB logo screen then freeze, but I could always restart it and go back to the regular ROM - so I was hoping maybe using Mobile ODIN it would work - this was clearly a bad idea.
It's totally bricked now
I can boot it into Download mode, which looks like

but that's it.
I installed Heimdall after reading some people post in various forums that they were able to recover from similar situations using it, but I can't find a Heimdall firmware package for the SGH-T999.
And ideas? This is really bad ...
Thanks!
You will have to send it in to be repaired.

Bricked generally means black screen no response when plugged in or Power cycled or anything.
As people have already pointed out get a Windows machine or boot camp a Windows partition and flash an image with Odin. There is a bunch in the thread in android development.
Best of luck flashing let us know how you get on.
I laughed hard @ LET ME FLASH THE LIQUID SMOOTH WHILE AT IT
, if your route and goal is to revert back to stock rom then how can u flash liquid smooth while AT IT? makes zero sense since odin is just for stock and i never heard of odin flashing custom roms. And guess what? The warranty people got flash counters so figure out a way to reset your download flash counter or they will find its been tampered with.
Get to a Pc! If you can get to download mode you are definitely not hard bricked. Flash a stock firmware and ur good to go!
This thread is hilarious. Flashing a ROM that you know doesn't work. Good job!
Thanks everyone for the Windows Odin suggestion. Will try it and let you know how it goes.
I was able to restore the stock ROM using CWM, which I had forgotten was on the phone (I had been using Volume Down-Home-Power so much I forgot about Volume Up). All in all not one of my prouder moments, but all's well that ends well.
That said, I would like to know why the Liquid Smooth ROM didn't work, and how I could tell a working ROM from a non-working one before flashing it. I did an md5 and it matched.
Yes @psykhotic, I had trouble with this ROM when using CWM, but when I asked Max Lee of http://galaxys3root.com/ - whose instructions I had followed for rooting my phone and installing the Liquid Smooth ROM - his response made it sound like it could have just been a fluke:
Did you do factory reset when I installing liquid? If u end up in a bootloop u have to do a fresh reinstall then wipe cache simple doing wipe after installing will not solve problems. That is a funky thing that happens but you should make a backup rom so u can easily restore if something goes wrong.

There was also reason to believe it could have been related to CWM, such that a different software for flashing the ROM might have worked (when I say reason to believe, I mean to someone who isn't an expert in flashing ROMs).

Just a little FYI that I have learned when flashing anything that can cause you to brick. Make sure that you rad all the comments and see if others are having issues with flashing. Make sure you download the flash file for your area. Can't flash a us phone with a Chinese phone. You got very lucky from the sounds of it and am glad to hear that you could still boot it.

D710BST i think Im ready to flash a ROM

So here's the deal. I rooted my D710BST (ICS 4.0.4, fl24) with framaroot. I had no custom recovery so i used mobile odin (i don't have a pc) to flash garwynn's custom kernel ( http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=119 ) so i can run agat's cr. Well now i have random power downs and gps failure. I have not been able to play ingress in over a week and its driving me nuts!!!
I just wanted to run this by more knowledgeable individuals. In theroy (until confirmed), since the kernel is a safe kernel, i can jump straight outta ICS. I am wanting to load ProjectX ROM ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320041 ). It requires a clean flash. [q] Since mobile odin can flash from internal SD and i lack computer, can i not move all my pics, vids, personal files (etc...) to my external SD, remove it, then flash clean?
noob alert: everything i have ever done in the root world is in this post
5min between posts?!?!? I just wanna edit this one!!! grr
What gives? Do i need to put "[q]" in the title?
I drive a cab and kinda rely on my gps. I can manage, with just my map; but i miss my navi!
Can you put a custom recovery?

More stock stuff? Sheeesh, why am i rooting? This beautiful sounding ROM was developed by your team! Why the discouragement? And, as i said before, i do not have a computer. How come no one will just answer the question? I am a strong person and can take criticism, if that is what i needed. Is your projectX ROM not safe/ideal?!?!? Sorry man, Im just baffled you would discourage use of your own products. Am i missing something? Confused
Sorry for sounding stubborn but, i really wanna try that ROM. Im just saying, if i wanted to stay stock, i would have never researched my way to xda. All the op details were so i can be thorough. The actual question was about the internal (clean) flash. I mean, should i not try your ROM?
If you read the first post in the thread you would see the instructions on how to install... and the first step is upgrading to the official upgrade because this creates the Preload partition, it is a necessary step. Not discouraging you from using Project X at all, I am about to release an update soon. I just want you to be aware of the proper procedure so things don't go wrong. The first post in the Project X thread has all the steps you need along with links to all the files you need.
Oh my god! I am sooo sorry i read that the wrong way! I feel like anass now! My apologies.
Yeah, i read about the partition change from ICS. So, using your link to upgrade and fix partitions would make for a smooth projectX installation? Does that mean i don't have to clean flash, since Im not coming from ICS?

Thank you for all your help. This, in particular, helped me out the most. Without knowing what to expect, I got a bit worried when there was no boot after el29 kernel flash. IMO, Use a One Click exe file in Wilco's post then you have to add a custom recovery to flash roms. There are also videos on youtube, look for QBKing IMO his are the best.
All custom roms have hotspot working, but if this is a phone for someone else, you should pick something close to stock TW. A lot of the AOSP roms have little things that dont work that keep it from perfect. Unless you want a calls all the time asking why something doesnt work, stick w/ a TW rom

Answered your questions via PM, you'll also need the Hotspot Mod here-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879140 (use the GB27)
Sorry for the intrusion..
Simply visit this thread for the Odin one click. There are four types. Of the four, two preserve data and two reset data. And in the two groups there are Stock and Rooted versions. Personally, I prefer the reset data stock root. (2nd Option/Link). Nice and clean afterwards . Also good to use because your device could by some twist of fate be on an older firmware. Unless you prefer that. This is the latest GB27. Oh yea, QBking root video is on the thread as well.

Then you can download this file I bundled up. It is 37MB and includes:
1. Samung USB Drivers 1.5.14.0 (You can download the latest from Samsung.com. (These work for the S-S4,Note-N3) Tested
2. Mobile Odin Lite 3.85 - Tested & Works amazingly. (Also cracked MJ7 on the S4. Woo!)
(Pick your poison!)
(ONLY FLASH THIS IF YOU HAVE A ROM READY TO BE FLASHED RIGHT AFTER! CAUSES BOOTLOOP. RECOVERY ACCESSIBLE ONLY)
3. StockCWM-EL26.tar.tar (It has tar written twice and I forgot to edit it before the upload & NO. Do not extract it. -_-) Flash with Mobile Odin.
(Agat is safe to flash and boot back into your stock rooted device. BUT! Some ROM's require you use EL26 and flash directly to their ROM after install.)
4. AGAT GB27 Recovery 0.5.0.tar
Link! & Someone mirror please? Its getting more difficult to find M.O.L. 3.85. Never know when you need a miracle...j.k lol

As for the tethering app. Just hit the Play Store with a "android tether" (without quotes) search.
