IMO, Use a One Click exe file in Wilco's post then you have to add a custom recovery to flash roms. There are also videos on youtube, look for QBKing IMO his are the best.
All custom roms have hotspot working, but if this is a phone for someone else, you should pick something close to stock TW. A lot of the AOSP roms have little things that dont work that keep it from perfect. Unless you want a calls all the time asking why something doesnt work, stick w/ a TW rom

Answered your questions via PM, you'll also need the Hotspot Mod here-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879140 (use the GB27)

Sorry for the intrusion..
Simply visit this thread for the Odin one click. There are four types. Of the four, two preserve data and two reset data. And in the two groups there are Stock and Rooted versions. Personally, I prefer the reset data stock root. (2nd Option/Link). Nice and clean afterwards . Also good to use because your device could by some twist of fate be on an older firmware. Unless you prefer that. This is the latest GB27. Oh yea, QBking root video is on the thread as well.
http://www.sxtpdevelopers.com/showthread.php?t=166
Then you can download this file I bundled up. It is 37MB and includes:
1. Samung USB Drivers 1.5.14.0 (You can download the latest from Samsung.com. (These work for the S-S4,Note-N3) Tested
2. Mobile Odin Lite 3.85 - Tested & Works amazingly. (Also cracked MJ7 on the S4. Woo!)
(Pick your poison!)
(ONLY FLASH THIS IF YOU HAVE A ROM READY TO BE FLASHED RIGHT AFTER! CAUSES BOOTLOOP. RECOVERY ACCESSIBLE ONLY)
3. StockCWM-EL26.tar.tar (It has tar written twice and I forgot to edit it before the upload & NO. Do not extract it. -_-) Flash with Mobile Odin.
(Agat is safe to flash and boot back into your stock rooted device. BUT! Some ROM's require you use EL26 and flash directly to their ROM after install.)
4. AGAT GB27 Recovery 0.5.0.tar
Link! & Someone mirror please? Its getting more difficult to find M.O.L. 3.85. Never know when you need a miracle...j.k lol

As for the tethering app. Just hit the Play Store with a "android tether" (without quotes) search.

[Feedback] Any interest in Automated root of stock ROM (w/o ODIN or ROM Flash)?

I have some scripts that I wrote for LG Optimus S to do a fully automated root/unroot of the stock ROM.
I adapted them to work with the Samsung Epic 4G Touch.
This would root the phone using your EXISTING stock ROM. No need to use ODIN or mess with custom recoveries, kernels, or ROMs.
Everything would be your existing stock (ROM, zImage-kernel+initramfs, etc), except you'd have ROOT, so it shouldn't suffer from LOS (unless you had LOS with stock to start with)
Looking for feedback. If there is any interest I can clean it up and post the package.
EDIT:
Here you go:

I could see interest in something like this.
I recall multiple threads asking "will the epic touch ever get a more conventional root?" so if you can pull it off I could definitely see the demand.
I remember reading about this root method on the AC forums. I wouldn't be interested myself, as I want more from a rooted device, but I'd imagine there would be a reasonable number of people who only want root for wifi tethering and certain apps that require it and don't care about custom recovery and kernels/ROMs.
Ill be the first to test it.

I don't think it's too confusing, I just don't want to have to flash ANYTHING to get root. I have had ZERO problems with my phone. Not a single LOS, no random game closes, nothing. I don't want to risk flashing a kernel, even the stock pulled, and potentially stirring something up and having to deal with LOS and whatever else. Not worth it to me.

Assuming you install "adb" on Mac, you can use the (included) manual rooting instructions (see Reference Section B)
It should be much simpler than other manual instructions as you still are getting 95% of the automation through scripts. Just a little typing to kick things off.
I would test it.

Probably not a big deal for many folks on XDA, but this method will NOT trigger the Yellow Triangle nor will it increase your ODIN flash count.
There are, of course, ways to address those annoyances when using other methods.
There is a software fix for yellow triangle which should account for most sprint stores but I always welcome more solutions

I found a conventional root. Google "doomlord root" or http://www.xda-developers.com/andro...-anything-try-doomlords-easy-rooting-toolkit/
It works perfectly for the epic touch. No flashing required. I used it because i wanted full control but loved stock.

[Q] [IAMNOOB] can I flash I747UCALG1 when I'm in I747UCALH9 already?

Hello devs, I have a quick question here. I've read as many threads here as I can, but I still have this doubt before I go ahead and try to root my phone.
I just bought my Galaxy S3 I747 from AT&T yesterday, which came as I747UCALG1. Today it automatically downloaded the package from the network and updated to:
Build Number: IMM76D.I747UCALH9
Baseband Version: I747UCLH9
Kernal Version: 3.0.8-985684
My question is, since the phone is already in a newer version of firmware (I747UCALH9), can I follow mrRobinson's thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426) and flash back to ATT I747UCALG1, which is actually a relatively older version, using Odin? I ask this because I have a PS3 and I know that it is technically not allowed to perform a "downgrade", and I know that it very complicated to downgrade iPhone's baseband as well. So I don't know whether this is the case for Galaxy S3 here
I just want to get my phone rooted so far. Thanks for your patience! Please let me know your comments.
First, questions should be asked in Q&A.
Odin will flash any firmware to your phone. That's why it's important to get the right dl.
But,
Even if you flash back to LG1, you will get prompted to update again.

After LH9 update, maybe. After flashing the stock firmware, definitely. There is a no trip root method (won't touch your flash counter).

If I understand it correctly....what mrRobinson mentioned as the following link is the no tripping method. Basically it flashes rooted official ware so the counter wouldn't be triggered, I assume? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
And even if I've done that, I still need to come up with a solution when it prompts LH9 OTA again....emmmm

I intend on downgrading back to LG1 also being as I get horrible battery life with LH9.
Are there any other options besides freezing it? I know titanium will freeze apps, but I hate to install that app just for one thing, being as I would never use anything else in there. Plus if I remember correctly, I think you need to purchase titanium to freeze apps. Not that I'm cheap, but I'd hate to buy the app just to freeze one thing.
So I am just trying to explore other options as well. Preferably free options.

Grab the kernel in .tar format from here-http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244781 and flash it with Mobile Odin Lite from the Play Store (it's free). Your device will reboot. I'm guessing your on stock rooted so pull your battery after it reboots, put your battery back in and hold Power+Volume Up until it boots into recovery. Then go to Install From SD (power button is used to select), pick which SD your download went to (external most likely), scroll down to Downloads folder, pick the FI03 Toolbox that you downloaded, select yes, after it's done select Back until you get to Reboot System. Select that. Follow the rest of the directions from the linked thread above where you downloaded the files.

You don't need GC01. GB27 is the Sprint version, the carrier does not matter on the kernel. The modem is the only thing that is carrier specific.

If you're stock rooted on the latest JB release... pick the latest gb27 release on the page bilgerryan linked up too.... but read the thread first and make sure if the newest release is recent... that it is working correctly. I can't stress enough how important it is to read everything you can get you're hands on.
The gb27 kernel/recovery is just the sprint version... I'm on boost also and I run nothing but sprint kernel's and modem's.. so you'll be good.
If by chance you're on ICS still... then go to rwilco12's repo and grab a stock touchwiz kernel that has a custom recovery... or even a custom touchwiz based kernel with a custom recovery..
You just need to make sure the kernel/recovery is matched to the rom version you're currently running.. then do as bilgerryan advised..
Good luck.
Sorry for answering for ya Ryan... but I know how busy you are. Please correct me if I answered poorly..

I have the custom recovery as well.. after trying all of this, I went into terminal emulator, typed getprop ril.MSL and it just flashed down to the next line. I have tried both using terminal as a regular user and a super user. does not make a difference. Is it possible to just wipe Sprint software off of the phone and install a generic? I can't stress enough how going from my gs2 with its big sexy screen to this tiny proclaim that is, well, no bueno, is killing me. I hate the proclaim....For the love of everything that is holy, please someone help me out here. Am I doing something wrong? I am new to this, but I have read and followed step by step what to do and it keeps ending up a waste of time
Have you tried the Sprint diags. The only thing that works in it for me is the ability to display the MSL.
I have also seen it posted that it does not work on the Boost & VM stock ROMs, you may have to flash a DeOdex TouchWiz ROM

it won't flash if you're rooted... sorry to anyone who downloaded, but I forgot to check the md5sum and got a Status 7 when trying to flash so as soon as I figure this out I'll have it uploaded again

Better is relative. What is better for one person may be worse for another.

No it works the same as ND8.
Sorry guys apparently I never had a good file to begin with. As soon as I do I will post it.
I can confirm that odining Philz and installing superuser Rooted it first try.
Also this can be side loaded adb.
It really runs alot smoother than before the update.
All nd8 mods have worked so far.
Nd8 deodexed Rooted and modded

That's probably why it worked for you, I'm getting a Status 7 error in stock recovery.
Has anyone flashed this on NJ3 boost mobile modem. Or do you have the tar available for the NJ3?
Wait sorry I didn't even read lol its just an update. I'm on the NJ3. I'm trying to get back to stock. Hellllp

The tar isn't available yet, you can try checking Kies
update .
I applied all mods from ND8. the only one that wouldn't work was the Odexed version of the hotspot mod (stuck on samsung screen)
so in turn i used ryans old deodex.zip and deodexed the rom now all works well.
i did switch back to Ktoonz kernel with the settings Ryan has on TW experience rom
im going to ask ktoonz if he can add this new kernel to his tw list of 4.4
So if you deodex after you upgrade. all the ND8 mods work: sound increase, hotspot, custom splash, etc
if you dont deodex than you'll have to use wifi tether or something like that. until someone fixes the odex hotspot
i will say it seems to run smoother and the sound quality is improved alot.
I wanted to go back to stock so I Odin'd back to ND8. I found this thread and thought I'd apply the update right away. When I boot into recovery and choose "apply update from external storage" I get a screen full of garbage. I can't take a picture or screenshot of it, but I'll type out the first several lines:
Code:
Android system recovery <3e>
K0T49H.L710VPUDND8
Choose a package to install:
/sdcard
../
=??b ?&.m? /
b.?v /
_3? ? .? /
?? ?l?.2? /
[and so on all the way down the screen]
If I choose "../" it takes me back to the main screen.
If I use my volume keys to navigate down it goes all the down and off the screen.
Any idea what's going on?
No idea. Looks like your SD is corrupted. If not, I don't know.

YouTube sideload adb from qbking77 then use the same technique to sideload the update. It's worth it
