My friend at work bought a second evo 4g, and brought it to me to root and rom for him. Rooted with revolutionary, no problem. Flashed cm7 and miui on there, and made backups of both so he can flash back and forth between them to see which he likes.
So everything up to there was fine. He went onto the sprint site this morning and did the esn swap to the rooted evo, and does not get any data (3g icon) now. He had already swaped to it after he bought it, while it was still stock, to make sure it worked, and data worked just fine. Then went back to his original evo, and gave me the new one to work on for him.
Is there a data fix that can be done? Or should he call sprint to activate it instead of doing the esn swap on the website?

I think it'd be best to go to / call sprint and have them activate to alleviate any problems.
Did he activate while on CM7 or miui? YOu need to be on a stock rom when activating. I would just tell him to get on a stock rom, and call sprint and have them activate/esn swap one more time. It's highly possible the activation just didnt go all the way through their system.

Yeah, he was on miui. I wondered if that would be the case. So does it have to be factory stock, or can I flash a stock based custom rom, and which would be best suited?

No, your reading correct. He wanted to try it himself, that way if he messed something up, it wouldn't be on his daily phone. He then had trouble rooting and brought it to me to fix. Had to unroot with ruu, turn s on, then re root and flash.

Any sense 2.0 rom SHOULD work. However, to make it easier, its better to just flash a stock rom, just in case.

Ok. qbking77 does a lot of videos for my epic that are very easy to follow, and did a few for the evo as well. He did one for the kingdom synergy rom a couple months ago, so I sent my buddy the link and told him to try that one. Think that would work ok even though its 3.0? I'll dig through the threads for a stock 2.0 as well. Any specific one I should look for? Thanks
Edit: Kingdom Synergy worked. His phone is up and running. Thank you evo community, for your help!

i'm basically having the same problem with my phone. unfortunately, on order to get the 3g back, you need to un-root. there is some kind of issue with communication with the sprint servers when activating the mobile network, even if your running a stock rom. so the only way to gain access from the mobile network is to go to a sprint store and have them un-root your device. if anyone has found another route, without having to un-root, please explain how

Absolutely not true. You do NOT have to unroot to fix a 3g problem, just be on a Sense rom. Rooting has absolutely NOTHING to do with signal problems or activating.

Umm, just be on a Sense rom, preferrably stock. Then you can call sprint and have them re-activate or re-provision the phone. Again, you can absolutely do this while rooted. My last three phones, I rooted them out of the box before I even activated them.

Basically, I'm not getting any data at all.(on mobile network)
Originally, the issue started with error no.1012 when I tried updating my profile/prl. I researched on the issue and read that it means that the network was not communicating to my device properly. The problem with that, my data was working.
I called tech support because from my readings, a few things on Sprints side needed to changed. Well after that, tech support could not do anything but recommend that I take it into the store and have my device wire provisioned. So...I took it in and explained what I was going through. The tech said he was able to tell that it was rooted and that the other tech would not touch it if he knew that it was rooted. He said if I unrooted, that they would gladly fix the issue. I asked if he knew what the wait was. He went to the back with my phone and came back and said it would be an hour from when I unroot. I took my phone and to my surprise, was actually on a 4G network. Cool, but when I switched back to 3g, it will no longer work. I'm getting error 1012.
Taking the phone in for a replacement wouldn't be so bad, but I'm afraid that I will not be able to root the new phone.
So can anybody please help fix my issue so that I may keep the phone.that has my virtual heart. Thanks guys, if you can help, it means a lot.

If you are having these issues, first nandroid. Then completely backup everything with Titanium.
Then data wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, dalvik-cache, re-flash radios and ROM.
Then if you still have problems, let Sprint replace it. It's no biggie to root a new phone.

OK so you need to keep calling tech support track who you speak to. Never speak twice to a techie unless they provide help. Never accept answers as final. Start asking questions on plan termination.
Find a better sprint store go at opening time, not lunch. Allow the techie to have time to access your phone, ie let other customers go first.
You know this though. So if you can't get in to the sprint network for data, then ask for supervisors while on with tech support. Insist it's THEIR problem. Hell put your ten dollars a month to work.

it deals with the password the phone uses and it's failing to login and has a reset timer, the techs can't reset the sprint network internal timer for when the password fails and you get locked out, waiting 24hrs lets is timeout and an immediate profile update syncs your phone with the correct login/password
Have you tried re-activating it? Dial ##3272# -> Edit Mode -> Enter MSL -> Data Profile -> Menu -> Restore
It should reboot and reactivate when it boots back up, let it update everything but firmware.

Quick question. I have a evo 4g on boost mobile. Everything works and its also rooted. This was how i purchased the phone. If i decide to flash a custom rom, is it going to bump my current boost settings back to sprint? Or is that only if i update the PRL or the radio? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am not sure, but you can always nandroid the rom ( make a backup) and then restore , but a new rom does not change PRL or RADIO
I actually already did the backup. But that was the answer i was looking for. As long as those arent touched i should be okay.

To be on the safe side, get APN Backup and Restore, it is free from the market. This will save your APN (access point network), just in case there are any config parameters (like proxy settings) that are needed in boost. The poster above was right though, flashing the device with a new rom will not change your Radio, your PRL, or any of your PST programming parameters.
Good luck.

You can flash a custom rom to your EVO, it wont change any of the parameters already in the phone. On the other hand, if you are able to "update profile" from your EVO there is a slight chance that it will affect that. SLIGHT chance. I have flashed Fresh EVO and Sprint Lovers without a problem the only issue I'm having is not being able to update profile even with Stock rom 2.2. I keep getting error "1012". Aside from that everything works great. Like everyone has said, always make a backup, you can never be to careful.
Cheers and happy flashing.

Sorry guys totally forgot about this thread! I'm on my second EVO and I've flashed SENSE and ASOP roms and have updated everything from the RADIO to the NV, PRI and such. Nothing gets changed with SENSE roms, however being that ASOP roms don't have a EPST, MMS is a hit or miss. Most of the time miss.
A fix for this is to flash a ASOP rom, nandroid backup, flash a SENSE rom and configure EPST and restore the ASOP backup.

bought a used EVO on Ebay which has been flashed to boost and activated for me by the seller. Everything went perfect I rooted and flashed cyanogenmod as soon as I got home from the Post Office, lol. I would also like to mention that calling with/without google voice works perfect using the native android google voice app. The only thing I am still struggling with is conditional call forwarding and using Google Voice voicemail as the service for when people call my actual cell number. It still works as the voicemail provider when they call my google voice number. Overall I am very happy with Boost and the EVO. $50 unlimited with shrinkage is awesome. And when they say $50 they mean $50. As in 50 dollars and zer0 cents, thats right, no TAX!!!

Using Cyanogen is a bit tricky since it doesn't support those codes. I've heard you had to backup the rom you were using, flash the new rom and recover the backup. That wouldn't over write anything, but would put back your settings you used in the previous rom.
How do I backup all of my flashed Boost mobile settings?
You folks seem to be a very knowledgable crowd, perhaps you can help me with this.
I just purchased an Evo 3d and had it flashed over to boost at my local boost store. Upon picking it up from them he went over a few things, most of which made perfect sense like not updating certain things because it will set me back to sprint but the one thing that did not is he said no hard resets. Problem being most if not every custom rom either automatically or advise you to do a factory reset from custom recovery. How am I supposed to flash my precious cyanogenmod with that hanging over my head lol? So I've been trying to learn how to flash using cdma workshop and qpst so that I can copy/backup all of the already flashed Boost info so that if things go wrong Im good. Also I hear some of the non-SENS based roms require little workarounds to keep data and mms going which also would probably require a copy of the Boost flash info. Things like the AAA shared secret and HA secret etc.
Any insight to this problem would be most appreciated!

I tried searching for this, but it only came up with stuff from Cricket and Boost.
Is it possible to activate my epic if it is rooted with a different ROM? Or do I need to activate it now before I root it and put the ROM on it? I would prefer to put the new ROM on it and then activate.
I am currently on my EVO(backup phone), but the battery life is making my power bill insane.(just kidding, but you get the point)
You didn't mention the carrier, but if you're activating through the built in activation then you're on sprint right? I believe you can flash your rom of choice and then activate, it can be before or after i believe.
I have done re-activation on a rooted phone so see no reason why it wouldn't work provided no system files are missing that are needed.

No. It should allow you to swap out the phones. Guy do it here all the time. It allows for receiving a replacement phone and activating it thus deactivating the old one.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
In "my sprint", just deactivate the phone attached to that number... Then activate a new device once the deactivation is complete.
You'll most likely have to make a call out before the rest of the activation can be completed by going to settings -> update profile
It shouldn't matter if there is a custom rom on it because it's the same phone with the same hardware, which is all that matters. Plus most roms are based off the original stock rom. And Sprint has never given me problems with my rooted phone (mostly because they can't tell that it's rooted but also because they didn't make the thing.)
Just go to their site to activate it and pull the battery to put in that info underneath it and BOOM! It should work sooner or later Sprint won't even see your rooted phone.
I'm rooted and have been for a while. I just switched to Team-Nocturnals_Shoooter_RLS3.1.1 rom. I have a problem where sometimes I can't recieve messages on the stock messaging app, I notice this because I have Gingerbread Ghostly constlantly running and that app recieves the message but not the stock messging app. I also don't recieve calls every once in a while.
The first time I ever noticed this was about a month ago when I was running a Going-Green rom but it only happened when i switched to that Rom, never happened before then. So I upgraded my radio to 2.15.00.08.08 because that Rom ran so smoothly on my phone and wanted to keep it. The problem kept happening so i switched to another Rom and it happened on that one as well.
I've switched between different roms probably 5 to 8 times and I still don't recieve messages or calls sometimes and I don't know how to fix it. A while back, user on here was nice and tried helping me out by telling me it could have to do with Google voice, so i completely deactivated Google voice and its still happening.
I would really appreciate any input and info you may have on this and please help if you can. Also can I downgrade my radio? Would that help? Thanks.
What radio version do you have? The newer radios will not allow you to downgrade. But then again, you wouldn't want to downgrade your radio anyway.
When I had this issue it was because Google Voice completely F'ed my phone. My messaging wouldn't work no matter what ROM I flashed. I ended up fixing the phone by accident as I was unrooting it to take it into the store. Here is a link on what I did with mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18399552&postcount=2
Follow that process and fully unroot your phone back to bone stock. Once you've got it back to bone stock try sending yourself a message and see if it works. If it does then feel free to unroot once again and reflash whatever ROM you wish. If it still doesnt work then, while unrooted, make sure your phone has accepted all of the OTA updates from Sprint and then update your profile. If it STILL doesnt work then give Sprint tech support a call and ask them what the ## code is to reset your phone's network signal. I wrote it down somewhere from when I tried it on mine but I cannot find that damn piece of paper. If NONE of that works for you then you may have to take it into Sprint. Good news though, it's already fully unrooted so you don't have to worry about the risk of the techs denying you.
Let me know if any of this helps.

About a week ago I switched to a stock Rom and then called Sprint and they updated the profile and everything and used the ##782?? or whatever number that is lol.

Call sprint from a secondary phone, tell them that you are getting very delayed text messages and not receiving calls at random. have them update your profile. If that doesnt work have them reprogram your phone. had to reprogram mine when i was receiving text messages 5 hours after they were sent

What do you mean by them reprogramming my phone? Do i need to return to stock and unroot for them to do that or can I use a stock rooted rom?

What radio version do you have? The newer radios will not allow you to downgrade. But then again, you wouldn't want to downgrade your radio anyway.
When I had this issue it was because Google Voice completely F'ed my phone. My messaging wouldn't work no matter what ROM I flashed. I ended up fixing the phone by accident as I was unrooting it to take it into the store. Here is a link on what I did with mine.

It's always best to flash each of those separately. Flash the radio and then reboot the phone. Then flash the wimax and reboot the phone. And so on and so on. I flashed one of those all in one packages and I had problems with getting everything set properly. So I did them one by one and they worked flawlessly. I then read, afterwards, that its best to do them individually. I'm not exactly sure why....but that's what has worked best for me and apparently for the majority of other people. So I recommend going back and flashing each of those individually to make sure they all installed correctly.

I was also just thinking this this started happening when i switched to Going-green rom but after i partitioned my sdcard and started using dtapps2sd. Is it possible that dtapps2sd could be messing with my phone to where i miss calls and messages?

I ended up getting a replacement evo 4g and now this phone is not receiving all the text messages either. I am using ghostly sms so it lets me know when i miss a message. I also tried using Handcent messaging app from the market and it misses the messages too. Anyone have any idea why?

If I odin my epic 4g back to stock, will I have to re flash/ reprogram it to get it to work with metro again. It was working fully flashed on metro but my service got deactivated.

More than likely, since Odin formats the partitions.

No you won't need to... I own a business unlocking phones... and u don't need to. Even though odin repartitions it does not mean it changes ur data plan. It just repatitions the phone. It will still stay on. Just reactivate your plan and your phone will work

Unless they use the Phone EFS Clear option in Odin.
ShinyDude100 goes into a little detail about that option's use in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=31140050&postcount=609
Thanks Nikon for acknowledging that, OP, cwm backup your MetroPCS rom, then have fun messing with your phone but don't lose that backup. There are fixes in mms and etc on other phones, a new one may have to be made to get all of your features working correctly. YMMV on metro's 3g working for you, as some cities claim 3g to be blocked in certain cities on flashed phones, I will dig deep into that issue eventually and post a guide sometime on regaining metro's 3g in cities who got blocked. I have a hunch on what could be blocked. Cheers and have fun.

Question... why would you want to use the Phone EFS Clear option in Odin if you want to keep it on the same carrier. People should do their homework on Odin before using. And if anything CDMA Workshop. Connect port read change msn, meid, username, password then write 000000 to unlock. Go on ur epic and input in dialer *#*#8778#*#* or ##8778# go to edit enter 000000 then change everything from there that simple. Save then reboot. Call carrier and say u want to activate or just dial *228 or *#2284 whichever u find better. And there u go

Everything after this quoted bit was a great knowledge dump. (No sarcasm, it was useful info.) However, what I quoted above was where you just expected way too much of majority of readers on XDA and many other popular Android forums. Sad, but true.
Nexus S 4g flashed to MetroPCS, but I cant activate
I bought a Nexus s 4g that had been previously flashed to Metro PCS. The person just removed their Metro account 5 days ago. When I called 611, it went to the Metro recording..but I tried to call to activate, and they said go to the corporate store to have it unlocked. So I went to the store, and the guy tried to activate it, and put a couple codes and was shaking his head. His advice, " Take this to a store that does flashing and have them do some programming so it can be activated." Do I have to have it re flashed? I sure hope not. Please help!
You should ask in the Nexus S forum.
