Evo Boost Mobile CustomRom Flash - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question. I have a evo 4g on boost mobile. Everything works and its also rooted. This was how i purchased the phone. If i decide to flash a custom rom, is it going to bump my current boost settings back to sprint? Or is that only if i update the PRL or the radio? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Sent from my Htc Evo using XDA App

I am not sure, but you can always nandroid the rom ( make a backup) and then restore , but a new rom does not change PRL or RADIO

I actually already did the backup. But that was the answer i was looking for. As long as those arent touched i should be okay.

would be interested to know how it turned out. I looking to get my EVO flashed to Boost Mobile and have questions if you are willing to answer.

To be on the safe side, get APN Backup and Restore, it is free from the market. This will save your APN (access point network), just in case there are any config parameters (like proxy settings) that are needed in boost. The poster above was right though, flashing the device with a new rom will not change your Radio, your PRL, or any of your PST programming parameters.
Good luck.

did u ever try flashing a custom rom? if so what happen?

You can flash a custom rom to your EVO, it wont change any of the parameters already in the phone. On the other hand, if you are able to "update profile" from your EVO there is a slight chance that it will affect that. SLIGHT chance. I have flashed Fresh EVO and Sprint Lovers without a problem the only issue I'm having is not being able to update profile even with Stock rom 2.2. I keep getting error "1012". Aside from that everything works great. Like everyone has said, always make a backup, you can never be to careful.
Cheers and happy flashing.

Get apn manager on market and do a backup then restore on new roms

Sorry guys totally forgot about this thread! I'm on my second EVO and I've flashed SENSE and ASOP roms and have updated everything from the RADIO to the NV, PRI and such. Nothing gets changed with SENSE roms, however being that ASOP roms don't have a EPST, MMS is a hit or miss. Most of the time miss.
A fix for this is to flash a ASOP rom, nandroid backup, flash a SENSE rom and configure EPST and restore the ASOP backup.

Im also getting boost on my evo but what should i configure my EPST to to make sure mms still works?

It will work, just you will have to reset your mms. Dail ##DATA# and hit edit.

bought a used EVO on Ebay which has been flashed to boost and activated for me by the seller. Everything went perfect I rooted and flashed cyanogenmod as soon as I got home from the Post Office, lol. I would also like to mention that calling with/without google voice works perfect using the native android google voice app. The only thing I am still struggling with is conditional call forwarding and using Google Voice voicemail as the service for when people call my actual cell number. It still works as the voicemail provider when they call my google voice number. Overall I am very happy with Boost and the EVO. $50 unlimited with shrinkage is awesome. And when they say $50 they mean $50. As in 50 dollars and zer0 cents, thats right, no TAX!!!

Bostmobile Rom
Cyanogen 7 (nighties) works like a charm on boost for the EVO.
I wanted to use a Rooted Stock Rom for a change, I've been using Cyanogen 7 nighties for about 8 months with lil to non issues.....GPS locks for navigation, mms works, everything works just fine...I just want to try something new...like the new stock, it looks nice...love the clock/weather gatget...I want to try it out, but I lash the latest Rooted Stock Rom it messes up my mms and I cant get the ##3282# to change the MMS URL. Whats up with that? did the dialer code for DATA change in 2.3.5? or am I doing something wrong?

Using Cyanogen is a bit tricky since it doesn't support those codes. I've heard you had to backup the rom you were using, flash the new rom and recover the backup. That wouldn't over write anything, but would put back your settings you used in the previous rom.

How do I backup all of my flashed Boost mobile settings?
You folks seem to be a very knowledgable crowd, perhaps you can help me with this.
I just purchased an Evo 3d and had it flashed over to boost at my local boost store. Upon picking it up from them he went over a few things, most of which made perfect sense like not updating certain things because it will set me back to sprint but the one thing that did not is he said no hard resets. Problem being most if not every custom rom either automatically or advise you to do a factory reset from custom recovery. How am I supposed to flash my precious cyanogenmod with that hanging over my head lol? So I've been trying to learn how to flash using cdma workshop and qpst so that I can copy/backup all of the already flashed Boost info so that if things go wrong Im good. Also I hear some of the non-SENS based roms require little workarounds to keep data and mms going which also would probably require a copy of the Boost flash info. Things like the AAA shared secret and HA secret etc.
Any insight to this problem would be most appreciated!

signal problems question - what do I have to ask Sprint?

Im really not sure what my problem is but basically I'm in a spot where I normally have 2-3 bars of 3g and now I am getting kicked into 1x and wont come back, particularly if I get a text message. I also haven't seen that triangle icon in a long time (not that it should be too often, but in the tunnel to NYC it should pop up and doesn't.)
I've heard that calling into Sprint for something to "push" into your phone can fix this. Now if I call into sprint, what should I ask for specifically? They definitely aren't mind readers especially now that I'm not running their garbage anymore.
I appreciate the help!
I might be wrong about the terminology but I think you want them to re-provision your data service.
You can actually do this for yourself from the settings menu but I have had friends and a couple family members who had much better success having Sprint reset it on their end
Did you try updating your profile and your PRL? that is if you are still running a Sprint rom and if you aren't are you on the newest radio?

CM6 doesn't have any Sprint/hands free activation features because it is full AOSP
So you know they will try and have you provision it on your end first and to do that you must be running a Sense Rom with all the provisioning codes able to be used the ## codes. I myself prefer baked snack and the codes worked for me when I used it. I would try switching to another rom and try updating them then try sprint.

Well, for one CM might be causing the problem. I'm running CM RC2 right now and I love it but my data connection is much worse than on the sense based rom I've ran before.
Also, I don't think Sprint will be able to do what i suggested if you're on CM. I could be wrong about that also but this is why I think it might not work: When i got my EVO I gave my Hero to my little sister. I called Sprint to have them transfer the phone to her account and they couldn't get it provisioned because I was running DD2.7, another AOSP build.. Once we had her set up I flashed her back to DD2.7 and all is good.
So don't be surprised if you have to flash back to a sense rom to get your data problems sorted out.

Yeah I really love CM6, but I tether so my data is important to me =/
So if the issues are caused by CM, could I switch to a Sprint Rom, have them do what they have to do, and then switch back to CM6 or would that just bring the issues back?
what would be the easiest ROM to switch to if so?

Once you get all your data stuff sorted out you can flash back to CM, we're just suggesting you may have to flash to a Sense rom just long enough to get stuff fixed.

Very bad to no signal atall?!!!

Hey guys,
After rooting my evo about 4 months back ive neen through many roms, kernels etc. I have only updated the radio and pri once recently but never touched the winmax but recently ive noticed horrible signal strength sometimes texts wont even go through and im getting around 1-2 bars max no matter if im at or out somwhere.
So my question is what should I do to improve this would updating wimax help? Since ive never updated it since I bought this phone.
Im on cyanogen b2 supersonic mod which I flashed over a nightly because thats what da instructiins said.
Kernel: snap 7.6 turbo

if its just recently i would see if any friends have signal issues in the same areas... could be a tower issue.
otherwise i would go back to a stock 2.2 odex (it will jave latest wimax and radio in it.) and see if that helps.
if nothing works... it very well could br your phone.

Updating the WiMax radio will have nothing to do with your 3G/voice reception. That's a totally separate radio.
+1 on v_lestat's suggestion. See if anyone else is having problems, if they aren't I would try these steps (continuing on to the next if the previous didn't work).
1. Update profile
2. Reset profile in epst ##3282# (Need MSL) Edit Mode>Data Profile>Menu>Restore
3. Experiment with different radios until you find one that works best in your area.

Thanks for thr reply but can you explain in a little bit of detail like what will the epst do? And whats "MSL" lol
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I saw someone post something today about a program on the market to get your msl. It's called MSL reader and will help you get that. You cannot edit details in the epst without it. If that doesnt' work, you can always call sprint and tell them you need it. There are a couple of threads on here for help if they aren't willing to give it to you.
In the epst you can change things pertaining to your data pofile, wimax settings, and misc advanced settings. DO NOT CHANGE ANYTHING IN HERE UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE CHANGING. For what you need to do, just reset your user profile and then click OK to restart your phone.

Keep MetroPCS Data Settings?

No im not on metro but its the same concept..... I have major data changes and I've used odin many times and flashed many roms and none of those changes mentioned back to default.... Idk what metro data settings would have to do with going back to default......
Well, the "default" settings are programmed to be a SPRINT phone, with Sprint service. MetroPCS is a prepaid service. The Epic 4G was never meant to work with Metro.. so it had to of course firstly have the ESN# on their systems, and from there, it had to be programmed to work like their phone, otherwise, you won't even get a dial-tone. Its not mission impossible, but an Odin doest keep its Metro Settings, I've Odin'd, upgraded to Froyo, and then Nandroid Restored back to my Custom Rom with Metro Service.
Revival of the past
I know I'm ressurrecting an old thread, but I'd like all users of the Epic Community who are on a custom MetroPCS rom to know the following.
Once you go out of the custom rom you paid for, you sacrifice 3g service, internet/mms.
So unless you're roaming like me, i dont reccommend it. Also, as the duce said, your data programmed settings stay retained.
For the most part, if with metropcs, talk and text.
Make sure you Nand Backup your MetroPCS rom and keep that rom backed up and save somewhere besides your phone if you want to go around experimenting on other roms.
As for re-programming your basic talk/text, you'll need to unlock your epic if not unlocked, then cdma or qpst into your device, and use the lastest evdo metro prl you find and flash that.
after that you'll also need to get on the phone with MetroPCS activation support and have them provide you with the MSID (Min) number unless you already know it, so you can enter that in #000000# (or ##MSL#) terminal mode, and it'll ask for your phone number, hit enter, then on MSID enter the appropriate MIN. and there you go, talk/text will be restored in case you really need to reprogram it.

The only place I knew of was in Dallas, TX. They charge 75 bucks, If only I wasn't foolish enough to delete my rom, I could of distributed it on the XDA forums. =(
They have the Ad on craigslist, I do believe they let you ship the phone to them, but I'm not sure, that'd be at their discretion if they do that. I had found it via craigslist, so try searching there under "flash metropcs" call up those ads, and see if they can properly flash an up to date rom with everything working.

Man, how much are they paying you to spout this crap? With the correct settings you can get all 3g, internet, mms, google play store and all features (except maybe 4g depending on the provider you switch from). You come pretty close to trolling when you tow the company line like that and tell users that they can't do something when they can. I'd be careful about spreading misinformation if I were you. I've modded several phones on metropcs and gotten great results.

Try going into espt. (you need to be on a sense rom) Enter ##3282#. Go to edit mode (you'll need your MSL number). Select 'evdo', and make sure that the preferred mode is set to automatic. I don't remember if it automatically reboots your phone when you commit the changes, but if not, then reboot it manually after you change it. That may help ya out.

Right, but now that a lot of the Sense roms are incorporating that mod (the mod that shows if your truly on 3g or 1xx), some people are realizing that they aren't getting 3g signal at all. Some may have been on 1x the entire time, but then when they switch to a rom that shows what you're actually connected to, they realtize they're on 1x. That trick works for some people, but not all. I think it'll help out though.
Same 1x problem no matter what i do
Ive had this problem for about 5 months now and it doesnt matter what ROM i switch to or use it the same and going in EPST doesnt fix the problem neither when doing what you just said to do with the epst but when i do change it from AUTOMATIC to HRC it goes back on 3G but the downfall to that is that phone calls and text dont come in to your phone until you make a phone call so can anyone help solve the issue why is this happening? I have a white evo hardwhere 0003 used all kind of roms even stock and same thing and know alot about phones and been messing with them since windows mobile 6.1 HTC TOUCH for sprint soo... And my girls evo is and stays on 3GrevA. her in not rooted and is stock tho while mines is stuck eternally 1xrtt.

This. There may not be anything really wrong at all. I mean, it sucks to drop to 1X, but the stock ROM was lying to you.
Now, if you ONLY see 1X all the time, yeah, that's a problem. But an occasional switch over to 1X (particularly if you're in a tough signal area, like the core of an office building) is normal.

Have you tried one of the new Sense 3 roms? The reason I ask...when you go into 'ABOUT PHONE' in settings these versions give you a network option that others do not. Check to see what it is telling you are receiving 1X or evdo. If it says 1X...you may have the same issue I had...borked 3G. Once I got it replaced..I loaded up the 3.0 again just to check what it now said..and you betcha...evdo was now showing and not 1Xrxx (or whatever it was).
I tried everything as well for about three weeks..you name it..ROMS/RADIOS/STOCK/CUSTOM/ESPT even took it back to fully stock and then rooted again (lost my .76Hboot in doing so, but phone didn't work right anyway... I was grabbing for straws. Luckily it was just under the first year and paid the 35 to have it replaced (no warranty plan). I travel and no matter where I went the speeds were terrible..ya..the 1X/3G/EVDO in the notifications bar is just for looks...but you KNOW when your stuck on 1X...frustrating.
This may not be the case....but
kinda of a simple fix... first of all stock sense roms always show 3g even if you dont have it... if on every rom you flash you keep getting the 1x AND you alreeady tried radios, nv etc upgrades and those dont work, then it is your PRL not PRI... 2 different things... to fix it check out a thread under deveopement ..Deck.... cause there is a fix there, or google prl and pri update evo on google.. you will need msl and be on sense and be able to use espt

Friend lost 3g after activation

My friend at work bought a second evo 4g, and brought it to me to root and rom for him. Rooted with revolutionary, no problem. Flashed cm7 and miui on there, and made backups of both so he can flash back and forth between them to see which he likes.
So everything up to there was fine. He went onto the sprint site this morning and did the esn swap to the rooted evo, and does not get any data (3g icon) now. He had already swaped to it after he bought it, while it was still stock, to make sure it worked, and data worked just fine. Then went back to his original evo, and gave me the new one to work on for him.
Is there a data fix that can be done? Or should he call sprint to activate it instead of doing the esn swap on the website?

My friend at work bought a second evo 4g, and brought it to me to root and rom for him. Rooted with revolutionary, no problem. Flashed cm7 and miui on there, and made backups of both so he can flash back and forth between them to see which he likes.
So everything up to there was fine. He went onto the sprint site this morning and did the esn swap to the rooted evo, and does not get any data (3g icon) now. He had already swaped to it after he bought it, while it was still stock, to make sure it worked, and data worked just fine. Then went back to his original evo, and gave me the new one to work on for him.

I think it'd be best to go to / call sprint and have them activate to alleviate any problems.
Did he activate while on CM7 or miui? YOu need to be on a stock rom when activating. I would just tell him to get on a stock rom, and call sprint and have them activate/esn swap one more time. It's highly possible the activation just didnt go all the way through their system.

Yeah, he was on miui. I wondered if that would be the case. So does it have to be factory stock, or can I flash a stock based custom rom, and which would be best suited?

I may be reading your post incorrectly, and if so then let me know.....but did he buy an entire new phone just to root? Why didn't he just root the phone he had?

No, your reading correct. He wanted to try it himself, that way if he messed something up, it wouldn't be on his daily phone. He then had trouble rooting and brought it to me to fix. Had to unroot with ruu, turn s on, then re root and flash.

Any sense 2.0 rom SHOULD work. However, to make it easier, its better to just flash a stock rom, just in case.

Ok. qbking77 does a lot of videos for my epic that are very easy to follow, and did a few for the evo as well. He did one for the kingdom synergy rom a couple months ago, so I sent my buddy the link and told him to try that one. Think that would work ok even though its 3.0? I'll dig through the threads for a stock 2.0 as well. Any specific one I should look for? Thanks
Edit: Kingdom Synergy worked. His phone is up and running. Thank you evo community, for your help!

i'm basically having the same problem with my phone. unfortunately, on order to get the 3g back, you need to un-root. there is some kind of issue with communication with the sprint servers when activating the mobile network, even if your running a stock rom. so the only way to gain access from the mobile network is to go to a sprint store and have them un-root your device. if anyone has found another route, without having to un-root, please explain how

Absolutely not true. You do NOT have to unroot to fix a 3g problem, just be on a Sense rom. Rooting has absolutely NOTHING to do with signal problems or activating.

HAAHA no, sprint doesn't un-root devices. YOU rooted it, YOU un-root it.

Umm, just be on a Sense rom, preferrably stock. Then you can call sprint and have them re-activate or re-provision the phone. Again, you can absolutely do this while rooted. My last three phones, I rooted them out of the box before I even activated them.
