Phone decided to back itself up 2 hours... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I thought I felt abnormally rested this morning, only to find out that my phone was an hour behind therefore had backed up two hours instead of just one. Resetting the phone resolved the issue. I'm curious, did this happen to anyone else?

Mine did exactly the same thing. At 2 AM it went back to 1 AM, and I went to bed. When I got up, it had gone back another hour. I assume it did the "fall back" twice. A reboot fixed mine too.

Same here I woke up and was all messed up! My phone said 3:50 computer said 4:50 and alarm clock was 5:50
A reboot fixed the phone and a cup of coffee fixed my head, lol.

Mine did. So did my kids EVO and Wife's Optimus s. All Sprint so I think it was something on their side. Reboots fixed all.

Interesting. Mine was correct. Are all of you on stock phones? I ask because I am rooted using a custom ROM and kernel.

Mine did & when i checked the time settings it had changed itself to central time instead of eastern time. Like everyone else, a reboot fixed it. It must have something to do with the way sprint updated their network time or something.
Btw, I was rooted stock at the time.

[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40
I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.
AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.
Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.
Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)
If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.
The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

phone shut itself off

the battery was almost dead last night and i plugged it in before i went to bed, when i woke up phone would not respond had to pull the battery to get it to come back on, only thing i did different was use my old blackberry charger and set an alarm , any ideas?
Is this stock rom? Rooted? Are you running Setcpu? Could be sleep of death in SetCpu if you didn't set it right.

What are the settings for sleep of death? I am running SetCPU and on two occasions I haven't been able to turn the phone back on. Had to do a battery pull.
Do you have a screen off profile? Sometimes if you set the clock too low during screen off it will cause it to just go into a "sleep of death" at least I've had it happen once or twice before I fixed it.

It sucks because my screen ain't messed up like a lot of folks are saying and yes I did the test.

after I flashed EB, it went a full day without a reboot, then they started again.
Still reboots randomly threw the day. Went back to stock, no difference. Samsung support knows nothing, T-Mobile is more clueless. Can't return to the store anymore (past 14 days) so I guess I need to do a exchange threw T-Mobile. (at least its prob too soon for a refurb)

Yup, same w/ the root, no root, different roms... I got my replacement yesterday, so far no reboots at all. Keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way, holding onto my original for a few more days.

My phone is messed up

About 6 times a day, the capacitive button on my phone will randomly get pressed by the phone. I'll be holding the phone, and the phone will go crazy. There is no rhyme or reason why it occurs; it just happens. other times, it will just vibrate, and menu items will open and close. I can also feel all the haptic feedback when this is happening.
Sometimes it ends calls, sometimes pushes the menu button like crazy, and eventually locks the phone up for 5 seconds. I can remedy the situation by turning off the screen.
I took the phone in, but was unable to replicate the issue for the rep to see. He tried for 10 minutes and gave up. I wanted to let him know I wasn't just making up stuff, so I tried in store for 75 minutes. (Just so you know, its not related to too many running apps. I have already tested this) He then told me on my way out to brick my phone so sprint would be forced to repair it, which I do not want to have to do.
So I called up tech support. and whats typical of Sprint is to find everything else to assign to blame so they can just call it a day and not have to do anything. The newest blame is being put on the Network Vision upgrade since I live in Chicago. I have 6 lines on my family plan, and none of the other 5 phones are having any issues. Now tech support is telling me to go back to the store. The phone is driving me crazy now. I've reset and reflashed the phone to stock EL29 numerous times and the issue wont go away. I've also deleted everything on the internal SD card. I've reset via ##786# too. The phone is just plain screwed up.
I have TEP. What should I do at this point? Is anyone here a tech?
Thanks.
I'm not a tech and not trying to be smart, but have you tried flashing non-stock EL29 based roms, like Calkulin's or Blazer's? I would try other roms Gingerbread or ICS, just to rule out any software issues.
yes. i used to be on Calkulin's when this started happening (about a month ago), so i went back to stock, and the problem persisted.
So you're saying this didn't happen before flashing Calkulin's rom? I would keep trying other non stock roms (even ICS roms) to make sure. To install ICS roms, you need to flash EL26 CWM5 kernel (Gingerbread), then the rom. Also flash Calkulin's format all.zip (you may have already done this), because it wipes data, cache, as well as system partition. Factory data reset does not wipe system partition, I believe (I might be wrong)
Happened to my old E4GT. Menu button kept pressing itself but then it got bricked and replaced ;p

Had something similar happen with my first Pre years ago. I'd get woke up in the middle of the night by my phone performing weird activities and then awoke one morning to find it stuck in airplane mode and unwilling to be coaxed out of it.
Took it to the local store (was a corporate store at the time) guy was super nice and swapped it out without any hassle. Man do I miss that store. :-(
I have the same issue with my phone. I thought at first it was some sort of corruption on my blazer Rom, so I flashed multiple other roms with the same outcome. I haven't tried taking it to a store yet, but if this problem gets any worse, I might just have to use my tep for once.

This was happening like crazy when I was on the latest Calkulin ROM. I switched to CM9 and it was still happening. Menu kept popping up, phone would randomly reboot and sometimes the screen would just go black without shutting the phone off and I could not wake it up without a manual reboot.
Today I used sfhubs One-Click for stick FD19 and haven't had any issues at all. So far my phones been rock solid for at least 12 hours, whereas before I would have seen these issues pop up several times within that time frame.
lets just hope it stays that way

I am a lead tech at a corporate store fairly close to you (a few hours). If I find no evidence of corrosion or other liquid damage, I would be happy to order a replacement for you. Your disadvantage would be time to get here, and since seed stock is incredibly rare for this device, the trip would likely have to be made twice. PM me for further details.

You beat me to the post. It still happens on ICS in low signal areas..on 3g and 4g. It must be a flaw. I have tried it in known dead spots on about every ROM since launch. As soon as you get on the edge of a dead or very low signal spot, a random vibration then menu Popup or recent tasks on ICS.. its frustrating

i am not in a low signal area at all, and I have tested this theory
My phone did this once a few weeks ago. It was only the menu button and I was on the main home screen so it kept popping up the menu options. Shut it down and restarted and it hasn't happened since.
I have the EXACT same problem! I have concluded that it only happens in low signal areas, and it only affects some phones. Its EXTREMELY ANNOYING! I mite get mine replaced, being that my sprint store is very reasonable. What I do is put the phone in airplane mode when I'm on wifi and use Google voice for texting. This fixes the problem immidiately but only works until you turn off airplane mode. Let me know if that works.
I'm pretty sure this is a Samsung phone issue in general. It happens in low signal areas. My E4GT does it occasionally, and my fascinate used to do it as well.
Though, I will say the e4gt is not nearly as bad as the fascinate was. If you were in a low signal area with that phone, it was literally unusable because it would back out of everything you tried to do, or the settings menu would keep popping up and closing.
I've had the menu button pop up on the e4gt and a few phantom key presses in low signal areas, but nothing near what I experienced on the fascinate.

Menu randomly popping up

Road trip yesterday, using telenav app for GPS on my E4GT and noticed when cell signal was low, the menu button seemed to go crazy and phone was unresponsive. Searched here, but it doesn't seem to happen to everyone.
Is it hardware related? Should I get new phone? Does it happen with ICS?

This happens to me when signal is low, my thought process is that if it's searching for signal, the cpu is prioritizing that rather than keeping track of the menu button.
Was your battery life terrible, by chance?
I have the telenav app too - I haven't really used it much, I usually use the Google navigation.
However, right after the update, on first boot, Telenav appeared and said "updating" and hung - I had to battery pull, which made me nervous about Telenav on ICS.
And, my first day, I got about 6-7 hours LESS battery life than I had previously.
I'm strongly leaning towards simply uninstalling it.
Barry life great, 10-15 hours on EL29 rooted, CWM. thinking about rooted ff18 w CWM, but love good battery life. I use it all day for work.
Freaking menu spaz is driving me crazy. I'll get rid of it if its a normal problem in low signal areas.
It did it without using telenav as well. Heck, its doing it right now. Very frustrating.

Its a problem with the screen itself. I had that but it would happen regardless of battery life.
Just ask them to replace the screen/fix the screen.
Took it to sprint store today, they wanted to know if I had rooted it, said they would have to factory reset it. then if the problem continued, I could come back. Left the store, walked around a nearby big box store and it started again. Went right back, they said a replacement phone would be here in five to six days. Forgot to ask if I could have one in a box there. No charge, just got the phone two weeks ago.
Tech did mention that lots of people were bringing in the E4GT to have the ICS upgrade removed because it wasn't working as good as the GB.

I went a couple of days ago and was told that I was the second person to arrive that morning mentioning an issue with the newest update causing issues. I had 3 problems going on with my phone but this was the main issue. I had unrooted the phone and reset everything before I walked in so I wouldn't have them go through the trouble of doing that and waste time. I told them I have tested many things: flashing roms, modems, even PRLs (I knew the tech, so I was open about these things). I've had this issue for well over a month now and I got used to it but wouldn't mind getting it removed. I have done my own experiments and none seem to resolve it.
Their internal forums don't know what exactly is the cause of this "phantom menu press" but they are aware of the new ICS causing it. Their 2 solutions was either replacing the screen or a new phone. Although I was happy about a new phone (my phone has seen the concrete a couple times), I was hoping to see a fix at that moment.
Next time you go to the store, ask them to have the screen replaced. It could be that it is a faulty screen (sensor wise). I work for an engineering company and it is unbelievable how many new parts arrive faulty or with intermittent problems from the manufacturer.

[Q] Epic Touch 4G will randomly reboot by itself as soon as I wake it up

Hello,
I have been fairly involved in following this forum, and I think it is undoubtedly the best resource for this phone on the internet. Take a minute to hear my plight:
I bought an ET4G the day it came out in the States. I have tried several custom roms and play with kernels all the time.
About, I'd say...2 months ago, the phone started rebooting itself once a day. Sometimes, the screen lights up by itself while the phone is sitting untouched! The problem got progressively worse, until the phone was rebooting 15 times a day. I installed a fresh stock ROM (rooted), a NEW battery, and the problem went away but started to slowly creep back. At this point, I went back to the stock kernel (was using Agat's), and the problem STILL HAPPENED.
So, I installed a fresh stock ROM, this time unrooted, kept TouchWiz instead of Apex, and did not install any freaking apps, except for the BARE minimum. This time the phone did not turn off. It seemed to have fixed my issue. My speculation was that my phone, for some reason, didn't take the voltage under load quite well. So, I spoke to my friend (who is a Store Manager at a corporate Sprint store,) and he was very kind to help me out in getting an exchange so that I could use the phone the way I was using it (after all, I was still within the 12-month warranty).
It's now been 1 week, and the only modifications I've made have been to install Agat's kernel. THE PROBLEM HAS COME BACK in the replacement phone. So, as a last resort, I undervolted the damn thing -50mV, and even went ahead to underclock it using ExTweaks to 1100 MHz. STILL HAPPENS. I go back to stock kernel, uninstall all tweak apps, STILL HAPPENS.
So, I install a fresh ROM, it gets fixed, gets progressively worse, and then THE PROBLEM COMES BACK.
I'm going crazy, XDA. I just want to have a working phone until July 1st when I can upgrade. Is there any way I can diagnose what exactly the phone is doing when it reboots by itself, and what it's doing when the screen wakes up by itself when untouched? Other tips, suggestions, or anything else that could lead to a resolution?
Note: The phone reboot slightly less often when using stock kernel vs. the latest Agat kernel (0.6.7). It also appears to occur less often when I use default touch-wiz. Lastly, the problem goes away after a flash for almost 24 hours, and then it starts creeping back.
Why did you use undervolting as a last resort if your phone had problems? It would only make things worse

I mean, I've had the new phone for a week. I haven't done anything crazy with it, and it's already doing weird stuff.
I never over-clocked either of the phones, and once I learned under-clocking was known to help, I tried that last.
There has to be a way to diagnose this thing:
I've been monitoring the last seen services before shut-down, and the last 2 active services on the last shut-down were:
1) [dhd_dpc]
2) system/bin/surfaceflinger
