[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40

I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.

Copy sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy stuff back to sd. Helped a friend with hers.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.

AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App

OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.

had the same problem myself, did a clean install which didn't help, finally reinstalled 7.0, all working fine now

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.

Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.

Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)

If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App

I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.

Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.

The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

[Q] Insane Amounts Of Reboots (LONG post)

Ok this is a new problem for my phone. A couple weeks ago my phone started rebooting like crazy on CM7. I thought maybe it was the kernel so i switched it, that didnt work so i did a full wipe and installed the newest Nightly. That didnt work so i thought maybe it was Gingerbread (even though it ran it fine since it got cooked for the Inc) So i switched to an 2.2 AOSP ROM, that didnt work, so i switched to a Sense ROM. I have tried CM7, Skyraider, Magnolia, Business Sense Z, and now i am on Warm Z 2.2 and i am getting, no exageration, 15-20 reboots a day. No matter what ROM/Kernel combo i try. I also have the Battery Indicator widget in my notification bar that you can open and see what the battery temp is and i have never seen it hot. I can feel it rebooting in my pocket all the time. Phone calls make it reboot, music, navigation, all kinds of stuff. Sorry for being long winded, i just want to describe it the best i can. Does anyone know anything i can to to make it stop? Whenever i flash a new ROM i never restore Apps+Data, i only restore the APK's.
I called about a warranty replacement with the main reason being a blown external speaker, and they said they would do it. But here is why i havent. Somewhere along the lines VZW messed up something in my account and My Verizon online is telling me i am eligible for an upgrade even though im not. I called about it and she said i couldnt use my last NE2 untill Feb of 2012, then she checked the My Verizon and seen the same thing. She told me as long as i upgrade online or on my phone it will let me upgrade, but if i call in or go to the store it wont let me. Well i want the Thunderbolt with my upgrade, but i am afraid if i do a warranty swap it may affect my status on My Verizon somehow and not let me get that upgrade. I plan on selling the Inc after i get the Tbolt, but i dont want to sell it rebooting like crazy like this. Any input is appreciated.
I did the same with my HTC TP1 a week before i got my TP2 with the upgrade from VZW. I didn't have any problems.
Check setCPU or any app that would majorly change stuff on your phone. Such as ones that auto kill things. Turn all those off if you have any running.
You may just have bad hardware, in that case would suggest you going back to stock and advertising as such when you're selling.
Yeah i may end up taking a chance and doing a warranty claim.
I'am using CPU boost. You think that is causing it? It just started happening but i have been using the app for a while.

Well I uninstalled CPU boost and that didn't help. Anything else to try?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. i think I'm going to take the chance on unrooting and getting a refurb for it. Hopefully it won't fix whatever error is in the my verizon system and take my upgrade away.

has there been a fix for the constant rebooting?

hey guys, got my incredible a few months back and love it except for the fact that it keeps rebooting on me about a half a dozen times a day sometimes more. it's rather annoying. i am rooted and have tried a couple different roms including synergy and the new skyraider rom. it still does it running sky-raider. I love the phone i am just annoyed at the constant rebooting when i am browsing the net or watching a movie or something else. i've noticed that the phone itself is getting hot a lot.
also, my battery has been draining really fast after it has been charging all night. like i drive to work 30 minutes away and if i listen to music or online radio the battery drains to like 85-90 percent.
i am up for a upgrade in november so i will probably get a new phone then but I don't want to. i like my incredible. i want to wait until other phones come out. possibly thinking about getting the iphone 4 but I've never owned anything Apple before. always been a htc / android guy.
also, i got the phone used off ebay. if I take it to the store they won't be able to help me or anything like that since it's not under warrent or anything correct? do I just have to suck it up until my upgrade in november?
thanks for the help.

Seriously, dropping 15% after half an hour of streaming anything on that device is amazing performance. It wasn't real hard to completely kill that battery in an hour, frankly. As for the heat, I not only got it so hot it stopped charging a number of times, but I overheated it until it shut off and wouldn't come back on for an hour. That phone would last about 10 hours sitting on a table untouched. I never owned a device that destroyed a battery as fast as the Incredible. It was a useless paperweight most the first month I had it until I got the 3500mAh battery for it.
That said, I doubt Verizon would honor any warranty on it, and even if they did, I wouldn't expect a different device to be any different.
I use the stock Froyo ROM and have never had one random reboot. Also, I use the standard battery most days and get a full day out of them. That's all you can ask out of just about any smartphone.
Friend had nearly the same symptoms, her sd card wasn't fat32; double check yours. Better yet, load a sense ROM, and remove the sd and reformat it. Copy sd contents to/from pc before and after format.

I always just swap batteries so it's no big deal to me if they get 1 or 3 days of battery life. If I had any interest in Blackberry whatsoever, I would find that interesting.
well i'm constantly getting frustrated with this phone. good thing i have an upgrade on the 21st. i've tried everything. tried 4 different roms. even upgraded to the new 2.3 android gingerbread os and it still reboots constantly. it just rebooted like 3 times with no good results. i think it's a faulty hard ware. I doubt that Verizon will let me upgrade 2 weeks ealier even though my phone is not working. i can't take it anymore. any help would be grealty appreciated. thanks.

You must have some bad hardware in there. Have you tried it without the SD card? I have a bad SD card bluescreen my computer before. Just an idea.
Or you could try replacing the battery and seeing if there are any further reboot issues. Your battery is the one constant I observed after reading your initial post.
I'm having the same problem. I've had the phone for over a year and love it. Two months ago I started getting random reboots. I've changed roms, kernels. It seems to happen when it's charging, but it's not limited to that. it happens when using GPS, streaming, and then would become really unstable for a few boots. I've tried capturing
a logcat of it, but it didn't yield anything useful. Also looked at
my last_kmsg and didn't really see anything odd. I've swapped batteries, completely wiped and it still rebooted with no apps installed but stock plus ROM. At this point i'm thinking hardware, voltage problems. Any ideas?

It's a hardware issue. If yours is still in warranty, go to Verizon and they will swap it out for you. I had the same issue and nothing you can do (changing ROMs, kernels, etc.) will fix it.
I asked this same thing, its an issue with the USB mount or something I can't remember the answer for it, look up my posts and see if you can find the topic where I ask this, or search for 5 times vibrate/ reboot fix for incredible
Also I noticed that the black thing behind the battery, with the esn number, I made an observation that if you have a plastic leafy type of black cover, then I noticed that these incredibles reboot, I've only had 2 phones with a thinner black cover thing, so I'm not sure if this applies to all the thin covers, but I got an incredible now and the black esn cover is more stiffer and harder, so maybe it does have to do with overheating...since my new incredible doesn't ever constantly reboot
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
From everything I've seen and read, it seems like the random reboots point to a bad sector of RAM. I get once I'd say once every 3-4 months, which I won't complain about. But it's never anything rom/kernel/radio related.
Tho someone mentioned the cover where the ESN number is located on the INC under the battery. I have noticed a slight "warping" which I'm absolutely certain is due to heat. Not largely noticeable, but pretty significant nonetheless. I'd take a pic, but only have my INC as a camera lol.
If I use gps in the car, running for 3+ hrs, it will reboot due to overheating. Natural damage control for the phone.

GNex rebooting randomly

don't know if this is happening to you guys but i've had this phone for a week and a couple of times out of nowhere it just reboots, is not often and i definitively don't play with it much, like right now it was just sitting there at the desk and boom, it rebooted, that's like the second or third time in a week, anybody else experiencing this issue?
i'll be pissed if i have to replace it as i just put an invisible shield on that shinny screen.
It hapend to me to I waS watching a video in flash ...its his first day with me)

Mine has done this twice now I think. At least the reboot is pretty quick, but not great even though.

Same here. Returned the 1st phone due to the random reboots and now the new one is starting to reboot randomly too. The phone reboots at least 4-5 times daily.
I've had this happen to me about once a day.
I noticed something unusual while travelling for the holidays: I did not experience a single reboot or hard freeze while having a Rogers SIM card in my phone while in Canada for a week.
Within 15 minutes of returning to the US and inserting my T-Mobile SIM card I had another hard freeze.
This seems pretty systematic, over 8 days with a T-Mobile SIM card I've had about one hard freeze per 24 hours. Over 7 days with a Rogers SIM card, not a single freeze or reboot.
Happens to mine as well every now and then. Today just after I had started it and it was lying on my desk.

Sounds defective man. I wouldn't sit around waiting for 4.0.3 expecting it to help you out. Just get a replacement if its not a huge inconvenience (although random reboots are a big inconvenience ).
Well i went ahead and swapped it out, fingers crossed for no more issues.
the only thing i hate is that i'll have to install another InvisibleShield

I would switch it out for another one.
Mine does it only when my battery gets to a certain percentage, usually when it's low. Also notice it when I use wifi Tether app, when I close the program a few seconds later it reboots.
I dont have one myself but have been flashing and re-flashing on my NS4G since the first SDK port of ICS. My own experience and observation has been as follows: Once the official sources were release and the initial source builds began coming out, there was a problem with random reboots and as things were tweaked and adjusted they became less frequent then more frequent again and eventually in the right ROM/kernel combinations have almost entirely ceased. Its most likely a software glitch and until an update or you flash something custom it isnt likely to go away no matter how many times you exchange it....just my thoughts and opinion on it.
Happens to occasionally too... starting to wonder if its not all the phones or maybe just all androids in general
happens to mine when using gallery..but the phone doesnt reboot, it just powers off.....
Here's a funny off topic, after swapping the phone i picked up another invisibleshield from best buy as i had a rewards certificate, thought of using it instead of going through the hassle of shipping with zagg, got home, got my hands washed and ready to install and my invisibleshield package is empty.....
No $h!t so im pissed now and going back to best buy tomorrow hoping they dont think i stole it or something

[Q] Epic Touch 4G will randomly reboot by itself as soon as I wake it up

Hello,
I have been fairly involved in following this forum, and I think it is undoubtedly the best resource for this phone on the internet. Take a minute to hear my plight:
I bought an ET4G the day it came out in the States. I have tried several custom roms and play with kernels all the time.
About, I'd say...2 months ago, the phone started rebooting itself once a day. Sometimes, the screen lights up by itself while the phone is sitting untouched! The problem got progressively worse, until the phone was rebooting 15 times a day. I installed a fresh stock ROM (rooted), a NEW battery, and the problem went away but started to slowly creep back. At this point, I went back to the stock kernel (was using Agat's), and the problem STILL HAPPENED.
So, I installed a fresh stock ROM, this time unrooted, kept TouchWiz instead of Apex, and did not install any freaking apps, except for the BARE minimum. This time the phone did not turn off. It seemed to have fixed my issue. My speculation was that my phone, for some reason, didn't take the voltage under load quite well. So, I spoke to my friend (who is a Store Manager at a corporate Sprint store,) and he was very kind to help me out in getting an exchange so that I could use the phone the way I was using it (after all, I was still within the 12-month warranty).
It's now been 1 week, and the only modifications I've made have been to install Agat's kernel. THE PROBLEM HAS COME BACK in the replacement phone. So, as a last resort, I undervolted the damn thing -50mV, and even went ahead to underclock it using ExTweaks to 1100 MHz. STILL HAPPENS. I go back to stock kernel, uninstall all tweak apps, STILL HAPPENS.
So, I install a fresh ROM, it gets fixed, gets progressively worse, and then THE PROBLEM COMES BACK.
I'm going crazy, XDA. I just want to have a working phone until July 1st when I can upgrade. Is there any way I can diagnose what exactly the phone is doing when it reboots by itself, and what it's doing when the screen wakes up by itself when untouched? Other tips, suggestions, or anything else that could lead to a resolution?
Note: The phone reboot slightly less often when using stock kernel vs. the latest Agat kernel (0.6.7). It also appears to occur less often when I use default touch-wiz. Lastly, the problem goes away after a flash for almost 24 hours, and then it starts creeping back.
Why did you use undervolting as a last resort if your phone had problems? It would only make things worse

I mean, I've had the new phone for a week. I haven't done anything crazy with it, and it's already doing weird stuff.
I never over-clocked either of the phones, and once I learned under-clocking was known to help, I tried that last.
There has to be a way to diagnose this thing:
I've been monitoring the last seen services before shut-down, and the last 2 active services on the last shut-down were:
1) [dhd_dpc]
2) system/bin/surfaceflinger

Anyone elses Note 2 reboots or freezes occasionally?

Lately like the passed couple of months my Note 2 has been randomly rebooting like once every couple of days. Well, actually it doesn't exactly reboot its more like a sleep of death where for those that aren't familiar you go to turn the screen on and I don't know weather the phone went off or froze but it is non responsive. Like I said it really does not do it that often, not even really often enough for it to be an issue but I spent almost 800 dollars on this thing I don't want it rebooting or doing any of that.
I have had 3 smartphones in my day all being Samsung and they all did this starting with the Galaxy s2 which did it like 10 times a day. It was a really good phone despite that. Then I had the Galaxy s3 which would reboot occasionally, like this one not really enough for it to be an issue. Now with the note 2 I had had it since it dropped on sprint and when I first got it, it was rock solid. Now it is starting this. I am just wondering what anyone else thinks of the isssue. Am I the only one with the issue?
I am rooted and have been since like the second day I got the phone so I really can't say weather or not that has anything to do with it. It really does not seem to matter which ROM or Kernel I am on they all seem to do it every once in a while. All I can say is that my brother is an iPhone user and has had an iphone since the 4 and never once have any of his phones rebooted or locked up like this one does, and all my Samsungs have for that matter. I know its a little different since I am rooted running custom ROM's and all that but still for some reason when this thing does that it really irritates me, and I am just wondering if anyone might be able to help with the issue.

I have never had that happen. I'm running CM10.1 may or may not be the difference. Are you sure that the problem is not a app that you have installed? That would account for you having the same problem on different phones.

Hmm the only ones that I have had consistently with all those phones were the usual like facebook, twitter, titanium backup. I never messed with over or under clocking any of my phones or anything like that. Are there any apps that could detect a troublesome app that may cause a reboot? I have tried factory data resets but I always restore missing apps with titanium backup and never have just started fresh by re downloading everything, not sure if that makes a difference or not.

Restoring with tibu across ROMs is frowned upon as it can cause issues.. I imagine its not good to restore across devices either.. Maybe starting with ur gs2 somethings didn't restore right and has been causing u problems ever since.. I would do a backup of ur current ROM, wipe everything and try starting fresh without restoring anything and see if that fixes ur problem.. Hope this helps..

Then what's the best way to restore apps across roms? Just start from scratch?

You can try ROM toolbox from the play store, but I usually just start from scratch when I switch ROMs and I definitely start from scratch when it comes to new phones.. Even if its a warranty swap for the same phone..

Well ya when I first got the note 2 and the gs3 I did start from scratch but over time I started just restoring apps using titanium backup. Ill bet that's why both phones were flawless for the first couple of months of ownership until I messed them up with my constant restores. Another thing I was thinking about is the way I said the gs2 would reboot the worst out of all the phones I ever had, when I got that one I had came from a HTC Evo 4g and when I put the sd card from the evo to the gs2 I didn't format it or anything. I am betting that had a lot to do with why that thing gave me so much trouble. I will try a complete factory reset, and just re download all my apps from scratch and see if that fixes the problem. I really appreciate the input.
I've hadn't had the sleep of death on the GN2. But I have had a the occasional freeze or reboot. Maybe one a month, probably less. It happens. Between running experimental apps or mods, and that developers developers--including Samsung or their contractors--can't test for every situation, it's not a big issue. Other than maybe having to do a battery pull, and divak and cache wipe in recovery.
As for the TB and restoring, especially on the first time run on the phone or rom, I find it best to install from scratch apps. I kept separate directories for different ROMs because of it. Plus, some apps just restore a bit off like Lookout and FlashPlayer; you can restore the app, but don't want to do the data. Some stuff, you can use the data restore after installing the app from Google Play or sideload with a new ROM without issue. Unfortunately, knowing with apps play nice in which situations is a lot of trail and error.

The freezing/rebooting issue plagued a few of my galaxy devices. My Epic 4G(GS1) and my GS2 would reboot/freeze/overheat all spontaneously and I never ran anything but stock root on either of them. I used tibu but never to restore from one device to another. My GS3 was fine for the few months that I had it with maybe a couple reboots but not enough that I would classify it as a persistent problem.
My N2 has rebooted spontaneously maybe 3 times since I picked it up on launch day. I've had it go into a unwakeable state a few times where pressing the power button won't bring up the lock screen forcing a battery pull. I've maybe had it freeze on me the same amount of times. Overall it's been the best phone I've ever had as far as stability goes. The AMC update was kinda wonky for the first few days after I applied it, causing my phone to lag a bit but it has since seemed to settle down and the phone runs like a champ.
I assume you're doing a tibu restore of app and data, maybe just try installing the app from the play store and then restore just the data from tibu and see if that makes a difference. I can only assume as others have said here that you have a rogue app that's causing your issues.
Good luck.
System apps are a no go. However I have restored all my apps from my gs2 and from rom to rom on the note and I have not had a single problem. But when in doubt just download fresh from playstore.

Thank you all for the replies, I have to say after doing a full wipe and installing all apps fresh everything seems to be working a lot better. No reboots or freezes, or SOD's in about 4 days (knock on wood)
my note 2 still keeps rebooting once a day.. n its really annoying!! please help
not rooted yet.. planning not to
Question
How do you warranty swap from one to a new phone is that possible if you a warranty from bestbuy.
Not sure if anyone is still experiencing problems but I'll share what I found in case someone else comes here looking for answers.
Is this possibly relevant to anyone's situation? The following thread talks about memory issues that certain models of the GN2 are prone to have.
