GNex rebooting randomly - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

don't know if this is happening to you guys but i've had this phone for a week and a couple of times out of nowhere it just reboots, is not often and i definitively don't play with it much, like right now it was just sitting there at the desk and boom, it rebooted, that's like the second or third time in a week, anybody else experiencing this issue?
i'll be pissed if i have to replace it as i just put an invisible shield on that shinny screen.

It hapend to me to I waS watching a video in flash ...its his first day with me)

I had the same issue while using juice defender which I originally bought for my s2. It seems to bug the nexus really bad at the moment.

Mine has done this twice now I think. At least the reboot is pretty quick, but not great even though.

Same here. Returned the 1st phone due to the random reboots and now the new one is starting to reboot randomly too. The phone reboots at least 4-5 times daily.

I've had this happen to me about once a day.
I noticed something unusual while travelling for the holidays: I did not experience a single reboot or hard freeze while having a Rogers SIM card in my phone while in Canada for a week.
Within 15 minutes of returning to the US and inserting my T-Mobile SIM card I had another hard freeze.
This seems pretty systematic, over 8 days with a T-Mobile SIM card I've had about one hard freeze per 24 hours. Over 7 days with a Rogers SIM card, not a single freeze or reboot.

Happens to mine as well every now and then. Today just after I had started it and it was lying on my desk.

I also experienced this when I was on stock rom (4.0.1) but it hasn't happened since I started flashing custom roms 3 weeks ago. on 4.0.3 now and not a single random reboot.

done it a couple more times after my last post, seriously thinking about taking it back to verizon, or should i wait for 4.0.3?

Sounds defective man. I wouldn't sit around waiting for 4.0.3 expecting it to help you out. Just get a replacement if its not a huge inconvenience (although random reboots are a big inconvenience ).

Well i went ahead and swapped it out, fingers crossed for no more issues.
the only thing i hate is that i'll have to install another InvisibleShield

I would switch it out for another one.

Mine does it only when my battery gets to a certain percentage, usually when it's low. Also notice it when I use wifi Tether app, when I close the program a few seconds later it reboots.

I dont have one myself but have been flashing and re-flashing on my NS4G since the first SDK port of ICS. My own experience and observation has been as follows: Once the official sources were release and the initial source builds began coming out, there was a problem with random reboots and as things were tweaked and adjusted they became less frequent then more frequent again and eventually in the right ROM/kernel combinations have almost entirely ceased. Its most likely a software glitch and until an update or you flash something custom it isnt likely to go away no matter how many times you exchange it....just my thoughts and opinion on it.

Happens to occasionally too... starting to wonder if its not all the phones or maybe just all androids in general

happens to mine when using gallery..but the phone doesnt reboot, it just powers off.....

Here's a funny off topic, after swapping the phone i picked up another invisibleshield from best buy as i had a rewards certificate, thought of using it instead of going through the hassle of shipping with zagg, got home, got my hands washed and ready to install and my invisibleshield package is empty.....
No $h!t so im pissed now and going back to best buy tomorrow hoping they dont think i stole it or something

[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40
I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.
Copy sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy stuff back to sd. Helped a friend with hers.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.
AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.
had the same problem myself, did a clean install which didn't help, finally reinstalled 7.0, all working fine now

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.
Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.
Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)
If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.
The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

has there been a fix for the constant rebooting?

hey guys, got my incredible a few months back and love it except for the fact that it keeps rebooting on me about a half a dozen times a day sometimes more. it's rather annoying. i am rooted and have tried a couple different roms including synergy and the new skyraider rom. it still does it running sky-raider. I love the phone i am just annoyed at the constant rebooting when i am browsing the net or watching a movie or something else. i've noticed that the phone itself is getting hot a lot.
also, my battery has been draining really fast after it has been charging all night. like i drive to work 30 minutes away and if i listen to music or online radio the battery drains to like 85-90 percent.
i am up for a upgrade in november so i will probably get a new phone then but I don't want to. i like my incredible. i want to wait until other phones come out. possibly thinking about getting the iphone 4 but I've never owned anything Apple before. always been a htc / android guy.
also, i got the phone used off ebay. if I take it to the store they won't be able to help me or anything like that since it's not under warrent or anything correct? do I just have to suck it up until my upgrade in november?
thanks for the help.

Seriously, dropping 15% after half an hour of streaming anything on that device is amazing performance. It wasn't real hard to completely kill that battery in an hour, frankly. As for the heat, I not only got it so hot it stopped charging a number of times, but I overheated it until it shut off and wouldn't come back on for an hour. That phone would last about 10 hours sitting on a table untouched. I never owned a device that destroyed a battery as fast as the Incredible. It was a useless paperweight most the first month I had it until I got the 3500mAh battery for it.
That said, I doubt Verizon would honor any warranty on it, and even if they did, I wouldn't expect a different device to be any different.
I use the stock Froyo ROM and have never had one random reboot. Also, I use the standard battery most days and get a full day out of them. That's all you can ask out of just about any smartphone.
Friend had nearly the same symptoms, her sd card wasn't fat32; double check yours. Better yet, load a sense ROM, and remove the sd and reformat it. Copy sd contents to/from pc before and after format.

I always just swap batteries so it's no big deal to me if they get 1 or 3 days of battery life. If I had any interest in Blackberry whatsoever, I would find that interesting.
well i'm constantly getting frustrated with this phone. good thing i have an upgrade on the 21st. i've tried everything. tried 4 different roms. even upgraded to the new 2.3 android gingerbread os and it still reboots constantly. it just rebooted like 3 times with no good results. i think it's a faulty hard ware. I doubt that Verizon will let me upgrade 2 weeks ealier even though my phone is not working. i can't take it anymore. any help would be grealty appreciated. thanks.

You must have some bad hardware in there. Have you tried it without the SD card? I have a bad SD card bluescreen my computer before. Just an idea.
Or you could try replacing the battery and seeing if there are any further reboot issues. Your battery is the one constant I observed after reading your initial post.
I'm having the same problem. I've had the phone for over a year and love it. Two months ago I started getting random reboots. I've changed roms, kernels. It seems to happen when it's charging, but it's not limited to that. it happens when using GPS, streaming, and then would become really unstable for a few boots. I've tried capturing
a logcat of it, but it didn't yield anything useful. Also looked at
my last_kmsg and didn't really see anything odd. I've swapped batteries, completely wiped and it still rebooted with no apps installed but stock plus ROM. At this point i'm thinking hardware, voltage problems. Any ideas?

It's a hardware issue. If yours is still in warranty, go to Verizon and they will swap it out for you. I had the same issue and nothing you can do (changing ROMs, kernels, etc.) will fix it.
I asked this same thing, its an issue with the USB mount or something I can't remember the answer for it, look up my posts and see if you can find the topic where I ask this, or search for 5 times vibrate/ reboot fix for incredible
Also I noticed that the black thing behind the battery, with the esn number, I made an observation that if you have a plastic leafy type of black cover, then I noticed that these incredibles reboot, I've only had 2 phones with a thinner black cover thing, so I'm not sure if this applies to all the thin covers, but I got an incredible now and the black esn cover is more stiffer and harder, so maybe it does have to do with overheating...since my new incredible doesn't ever constantly reboot
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
From everything I've seen and read, it seems like the random reboots point to a bad sector of RAM. I get once I'd say once every 3-4 months, which I won't complain about. But it's never anything rom/kernel/radio related.
Tho someone mentioned the cover where the ESN number is located on the INC under the battery. I have noticed a slight "warping" which I'm absolutely certain is due to heat. Not largely noticeable, but pretty significant nonetheless. I'd take a pic, but only have my INC as a camera lol.
If I use gps in the car, running for 3+ hrs, it will reboot due to overheating. Natural damage control for the phone.

New GN froze had to pull battery...No big deal?

Hi everyone,
New GN,
ITLF41
19250UGKL1
yakjuux
4.01
I've only unlocked it, haven't done anything else.
I was only replying to a text message and in the middle of text, GN froze and the screen went black with a white line across top of screen.
Seemed to occur while the auto-rotate function was trying to rotate screen.
I also noticed the auto rotate on my GN does not work well at all. Sometimes it does, sometimes it will not no matter how long I wait.
Nothing worked, had to pull battery.
Seems fine after replacing battery.
I wouldn't be concerned but for the fact that I was not using 3rd party apps or a different rom. The force 2d option is off.
Is maybe something funky with the GN auto-rotate feature in 4.01?

Yes, versions 4.0.2 and 4.0.3 fix a LOT of little issues with the GN. They really should've released the phone with one of those 2 versions rather than 4.0.1.
I don't think you should be too worried about battery pulls unless they happen more often than you like.
Just like a computer...rebooting or pulling the battery at least once a week is recommended!

I'm a Network Admin for a large School Board. I know its strange I know nothing about smart Phones but I do know much about Wireless/Routers/switches and Computers.
If your rebooting computers once a week something is amiss....lol
I have servers and clients that have uptimes of 1 year+ before an update requires me to down a server or re-image a client.
In my case, if what had happened to my NEW GN happened on one of my OES2 Linux servers, Id be scrambling until the issue was found and fixed and i'd be none to happy.
But alas, a server is not a cell phone.
I hope it was a just a freak isolated incident.

One very simple reason: If you pull the battery in a bad moment, e.g. right when the hardware is writing something to the Flash memory, you might (soft-) brick your phone and lose all the data on it.

Well because,
If I have to keep pulling the battery (which is NOT occurring thankfully so far) then I would say something is wrong and its not just a software bug. I would call it a blue screen of death in computer terms.
That could be anything from a hardware fault (Memory/CPU/IO sub system..etc) That would for me, mean taking it back.
A hard reset may temporarily fix the issue. But it doesn't solve the underlying problems.
I'm hoping the error was a one off. If it never occurs again, then we're good to go.
If it does, its goin back.
Same thing happened to me, the weird thing is it happened right after I completely reset the phone...

In my case the Auto rotate feature seems to be the common theme for funkyness.
Sometimes its quick, less than a second, sometimes it doesn't move at all.....
Then, a hard lock.
I realize that 4.02 and .03 fix some bugs but I have the Canadian ver. and google is not gonna update OTA for my NG.
I'm not ready for the whole, flash to "google's" stock rom yet. I just learned to unlock it...lol. If it locks again i'll try that. If it don't i'll leave well enough alone.

Actually, I have to replace cmos batteries all the time.
Usually they are good for 4 or 5 years but sometimes not.

So yes, its quite common to have to pull a bad battery when dealing with 2,000+ PC's ...

Pulling the battery is always a last resort. If the phone is frozen, that is fine to pull the battery or you can hold power on the phone and it'll turn off by itself (not sure if this is in the GN but it was in Galaxy S1).

You are correct. Its not a common everyday thing for most.
I was just suggesting a legit reason for why anyone would need to pull a computer battery.
On another note, i agree with you that having an otterbox case makes it even more of a pain to have to pull the battery.
I just had another freeze up while trying to get back to the main page using the launcher.
Im getting worried now. I've had this phone for 2 weeks and it was great until today....
I think I'm gonna bring it back to virgin just to be safe before my 30 days is up.
If its just software then the new one will do it as well but at at least I'll know thats what it is and either wait for samsung updates or update manually.
Again....nowhere in my response did I say u HAVE to pull the battery every week....I simply said its best if u do, nobody is gonna force u to! But when u do get a bug...pull that battery, and if it keeps happening, send it for warranty...simple

This happens to me when signal is low, my thought process is that if it's searching for signal, the cpu is prioritizing that rather than keeping track of the menu button.
Was your battery life terrible, by chance?
I have the telenav app too - I haven't really used it much, I usually use the Google navigation.
However, right after the update, on first boot, Telenav appeared and said "updating" and hung - I had to battery pull, which made me nervous about Telenav on ICS.
And, my first day, I got about 6-7 hours LESS battery life than I had previously.
I'm strongly leaning towards simply uninstalling it.
Barry life great, 10-15 hours on EL29 rooted, CWM. thinking about rooted ff18 w CWM, but love good battery life. I use it all day for work.
Freaking menu spaz is driving me crazy. I'll get rid of it if its a normal problem in low signal areas.
It did it without using telenav as well. Heck, its doing it right now. Very frustrating.

Its a problem with the screen itself. I had that but it would happen regardless of battery life.
Just ask them to replace the screen/fix the screen.
Took it to sprint store today, they wanted to know if I had rooted it, said they would have to factory reset it. then if the problem continued, I could come back. Left the store, walked around a nearby big box store and it started again. Went right back, they said a replacement phone would be here in five to six days. Forgot to ask if I could have one in a box there. No charge, just got the phone two weeks ago.
Tech did mention that lots of people were bringing in the E4GT to have the ICS upgrade removed because it wasn't working as good as the GB.

I went a couple of days ago and was told that I was the second person to arrive that morning mentioning an issue with the newest update causing issues. I had 3 problems going on with my phone but this was the main issue. I had unrooted the phone and reset everything before I walked in so I wouldn't have them go through the trouble of doing that and waste time. I told them I have tested many things: flashing roms, modems, even PRLs (I knew the tech, so I was open about these things). I've had this issue for well over a month now and I got used to it but wouldn't mind getting it removed. I have done my own experiments and none seem to resolve it.
Their internal forums don't know what exactly is the cause of this "phantom menu press" but they are aware of the new ICS causing it. Their 2 solutions was either replacing the screen or a new phone. Although I was happy about a new phone (my phone has seen the concrete a couple times), I was hoping to see a fix at that moment.
Next time you go to the store, ask them to have the screen replaced. It could be that it is a faulty screen (sensor wise). I work for an engineering company and it is unbelievable how many new parts arrive faulty or with intermittent problems from the manufacturer.

This happens to me when signal is low, my thought process is that if it's searching for signal, the cpu is prioritizing that rather than keeping track of the menu button.

I have had this problem since GB, it seems to happen when you have low signal and on 3G...I hardly use 4G but I have noticed this issue doesn't happen on WIFI...try a day or two without using 3G in the areas where you get low signal and let us know

I do agree, I have had sprint replace my battery in hopes for this to be the culprit and disappear. No luck but I have seen an improvement in battery life hehehe

I'm on stock EL29, not ICS. Interesting if it only happens to Some after update if its a suspected hardware issue.

Road trip yesterday, using telenav app for GPS on my E4GT and noticed when cell signal was low, the menu button seemed to go crazy and phone was unresponsive. Searched here, but it doesn't seem to happen to everyone.
Is it hardware related? Should I get new phone? Does it happen with ICS?

T-Mobile Note3 randomly rebooting

So, I got my Note3 last week as soon as I heard CM11 nightlies were officially available. I spent zero time with the stock ROM.
Everything installed perfectly the first time. CM11 ran nearly perfectly, especially considering it's a nightly and there are no stable releases or RCs, yet, etc.
On Thursday I spent a full day at my desk at work. I noticed that my phone rebooted in my pocket. I figured "hey, it's a nightly...I've seen far worse"....then I noticed almost every 2 hours it seemed to reboot again, sometimes more frequently. It never rebooted in the middle of me using it...only while in my pocket.
So, I figured "hey, no big deal. Another nightly or two and this should be ironed out." So I restored my stock backup on Friday after work. All weekend long, no problems whatsoever. I figured it must have been something wonky in the nightly CM11.
Then on Monday, while sitting at my desk, it happened again...and again....and again. Same exact circumstances. I figured maybe I borked something so I got a restore-to-stock and flashed it via Odin.
Well, long story short this continues to be a problem whenever I spend any significant time at my desk at work. It doesn't happen anywhere else so far. It happens with any ROM I throw at it. I've Googled around and it appears that I'm far from the only person experiencing this problem however I don't experience froot-loops like a lot of people. Just semi-random reboots.
Now, I'm pretty convinced that a different (or new) modem would take care of this. I had the GS2 on Sprint and we had a problem we referred to as "LOS" (Loss Of Service) which typically required a reboot...even on my bone-stock phone...it seems to happen with the same randomness. One thing I do know about sitting at my desk, my phone is constantly switching back and forth between H, H+, LTE, DC and occasionally E...Edge being the only thing that gets solid service about 1 wobbly bar.
That's my own theory. This isn't a deal breaker for me. It only happens at work and if I wait a few seconds my phone is back in commission without any intervention.
Anyone else have a similar experience, tips, ideas, theories...? I'm more curious than anything.
Perhaps a Wi-Fi issue?

I keep wifi off at all times, wifi scanning set to off. I have unlimited data and my 4G speeds outclass my (relatively very good) cable modem speeds at home and at work (I live and work a stones throw from the NOC...I mean...literally, across the street from both places). I would prefer wifi if it wasn't sketchier than my cell connection.
So, it's not that.
How many files on your microSD card? Notice I asked how many, not how much space taken up. Android's media-scanner service seems to have huge stability issues once you cross the 10,000 files threshold. If that's your case, delete some files and see if it still reboots. I had about 10k files, deleted down to 6.5k and no more random reboots for me.
I have the same issue, and I don't have a micro SD card in the slot. The phone will randomly restart, usually after unlocking the phone. I have disabled wifi-scanning, auto app updates, and factory reset device, but nothing helps. It didn't do this before the kit kat update. It only happens maybe once a day or every other day. It's not terrible, just annoying at times. I'm thinking its a software bug.
Also, i'm running everything stock at the moment.
I have been on Cyanogenmod nightlies since I got the phone...and in the past week or two it does not reboot randomly with either Cyanogen or AOKP. At all. Still does with TW, I haven't taken the KK update so I don't know if that will help or hurt....and unless I absolutely am required to I won't be taking that update ever.
Maybe some kind of interference, that's kinda odd that it's happening only at your desk. And on stock.....
