[Q] not enough free internal storage - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there,
I'm new here and I installed this ROM on my Desire:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315961&page=101
Now my problem is that there are only 14 MB free Space of internal storage.
My EXT partition is 2048 MB and I installed "App2SD Pro"
If I open App2Sp Pro I only see 2 of the preinstalled apps
First is "ADFree" in "Phone only" category (I moved it to the SD card)
Second is "ASTRO" in "On phone" category.
Why it's unpossible for me to move the preinstalled apps (like "My Tracks" "teeter" "Facebook" "Fb Chat" and so on) to the SD card?
Greetings from Germany
Daniel Luib

Try S2E.
It allows to move apps, data and cache to the EXT partition.
You'll find it on the Market
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App

Hey,
I've tried it. Without success.
I chose all options to move on SD card. And then I pushed the "menu" button on my Desire and pushed the option "Reboot" in the App because it appeared below each option to move on SD that an reboot is required.
But my Desire didn't reboot.
Then I rebootet it normal. After reboot I opened the App and there still was the message that a reboot is required.
Do you have another suggestion?

i'm afraid this advice is wrong...
quote from S2E market page: "S2E (simple2ext) works only with CyanogenMod7!"
ROM mentioned in OP is runnymede...
i don't use either rom, but i think reading this might help.
it'll help your understanding of A2SD+

You're right. I'm sorry I just didn't realize it

Why you use App2SD with this rom? Runnymede has A2SD++ on it (then moves apps to ext partition) and may be that App2SD (wich moves apps to fat32 partition) will conflict with it.
Titanium in the first page tells you the usage of the ext partition.
Is your ext partition an ext4? Is it primary and after the Fat32 partition?
Finally, I don't think that is possible to move preinstalled apps to ext with A2SD++, but only your downloaded apps and only the relevant part of it, a little (very little) part remains on the phone. Anyway may be i'm wrong.

Yes, I have an ext4 partition but I don't know wether it's before or after the fat32 partition.
But if it's impossible to move preinstalled apps to SD the ROM I installed is silly because there are only about 14 MB of internal storage left.
I'll try it once again.
Another question:

Do I have to install the "HBOOT CM7r2" version or the "STOCK HBOOT" version?
How can I find out?
I've got the HBOOT 0.93

are you s-off or s-on? it sounds like you are s-on. therefore, after flashing the rom, flash the rom converter that is available as an addon on the first page. you should get more storage.

what means s-on and s-off?
what's the difference?

s-off is basically full root. when you s-off, you can change the system partition of your phone to get more space for data internally. reboot into bootloader to find out, but i'm pretty sure that you are s-on.

It's S-ON.
How can I flash it so S-OFF.
Is this working with "unrevokedĀ³"?

unrevoked is to root. use alpharev. search for it.

I've downloaded it and I'll seach tomorrow for an instruction and then I make my Desire S-OFF =)
See you tomorrow!

Application Space

I have the HTC Desire on Telus.
I have Apps2SD installed, as well as Android 2.2. Currently I am unrooted but was rooted before and the same issue.
I can move some applications to the SD card, but not all of them. Also its only part of the application. I am still running out of space all the time.
Am I missing something, how do you install and run an application from the SD card?
Root. Youre using stock a2sd which doesnt fully move the app to the sd so it still uses storage space. Root and a2sd+ is what youre after
Sent from my HTC Desire
As I said in my post, I was Rooted before, still didn't install the full application and cache and everything to sd.
Well if you rooted but didn't partition your SD card for A2SD+, then you did nothing extra.
Root > partition SD card > reinstall ROM
Link to the instructions on how to do it exactly, make sure I do it correct this time around.
Thanks.
So I did that, you can only partition the SD card as 512MB, which is clearly the same as internal memory. Also, the applications still only move some of itself over to the sd card.......
I can't use Gparted for reasons, is there another program that does the same that works with windows?
Anyone....really......come on....
MiniTool Partition Wizard (google it) works under Windows and can create ext3 partition SD Cards. It's the only one i found that actually works, and it's free.
As an alternative, you can instal ROM Manager on your phone and use it to create ext3 partition, although it's limited to 512MB.
Thanks for that application.
So I formatted my SDcard, reinstalled the rom and I still have only 114MB free, and 2GB missing from my SDCard now...WTF
Yeah, but data will be stored on ext3 partition so you will be able to install more apps. I now have 200mb of apps, and still have 40% free in internal memory.
The new Adobe Flash update increases the already ludicrous amount of space this app takes up on your phone. Was 10.96MB, now 11.29MB.
No Froyo move to SD.
Can someone please give me instructions from start to finish on how to do this because clearly I'm doing it wrong, I have 114MB internal free with fresh install.
Just install applications, you'll see they now take way less space in phone memory. You won't see that partition as available space.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
Would still be nice to have instructions for next time.
And so your telling me there is no point to making a 2GB extra partition, since you can't move the apps fully over, that's what I thought, and this was a waste of time.
Instructions can be found all over the xda forums...seriously its not that hard to find..u need a rooted phone, a ROM that supports A2SD and an ext2 or ext3 partition on ur sd-card.

Yea, these forums are bloated with topics and new posts every 5 seconds, its hard to find anything. And I found a tutorial or 2, obviously I did it wrong.
So a direct link, or a new step by step would be great. Everyone is acting like its easy, so shouldnt be hard to write a quick step by step or give a link..lol

Okay....what ROM are you using? Stock 2.2 only supports Google's way of moving Apps (i.e. moving some of it and leaving the rest behind). Even with rooting, the stock ROM WILL NOT move everything to SD. So you need a new ROM which will support the A2SD feature.....so selecting a new ROM (even a modified version of the stock one) would be your first step. Make sure this ROM has support for A2SD or A2SD+....
Edit: If you do decide to make the "full" switch, it is recommended to S-OFF if possible.... I am fairly confident that you are following the right steps but the ROM isn't supporting it.
I am currently running your ROM, the Oxygen v2.0-RC6 Gingerbread ROM. And i dont know what S-OFF is. I am assuming a way to power off.

Have you also got a custom recovery? like ClockworkMod (can be found on the Market) or AmonRa (i don't use this).... you will need one of them if you want to enable A2SD with Oxygen ROM. This is because the oxygen ROM, by default, writes app data into the internal memory rather than into any external partitions.
Basically once you create your ext3, you have to boot into the custom recovery and flash this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2263716/dalv...2SD-signed.zip
and reboot..and that should do the trick.
That's the general summary of the steps. Read the link for more details on partitioning:
Link on SD card partitioning: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910290
EDIT: Put simply, S-OFF (security off) allows you to install custom HBOOT image (such as the one I have..) which give you more space in you internal memory. Alpharev Oxygen HBOOT for example (HBOOT is the bootloader) gives around 337MB as internal space for your apps....which kinda makes EXT3 partitions unnecessary...
You have to be a bit careful with S-OFFing as newer Desire models have new security feature which makes it unsuitable to flash a new HBOOT. Read more about this here:

[Q] Where is my ext4 drive?

Hello, Yesterday I rooted and flashed cyanogenmod on my Desire for the first time following this perfect noob proof guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 to the letter and its working perfectly.
I partioned the SD, got 1 GB of Ext4, as the guide did and all that, and I have had this for a day now and after a few apps I am already down to 40 MB internal memory, whats going on? Did I do something wrong?
Regards
You need to move apps and dalvik-cache to EXT4-partition or flash CM7-Hboot via fastboot if you are S-OFF.
Swiftkeyed from ICS with Transparent XDA App
Thank you for your reply but I really have no idea what that means, im a complete newbie... I followed that guide so I am S-OFF. Where is that Hboot I need to flash? Flashing that now will that remove or clear my phone?
Also I checked my phone:
a2sd:
Capacity: 0.96 GB
Used: 67 MB
Free: 0.89 GB
Clearly its in use is it? Or maybe not... :/
Could someone tell me what to do please?
Look for S2E on the Android Market. That will move your apps to your EXT4 partition. Check the selected folders that you wanna moved to the EXT4 partition. Check Applications, Private Apps and Dalvik Cache (optional but recommended if you have a fast sd card). Reboot after configuring. It will take some time to reboot since it'll be transferring your existing app to the EXT4.
Don't mess with your hboot until you fully understand what you are doing. Check http://alpharev.nl to get an idea and read the sticky on the development section for more information.
THank you so much for your reply. One quick question: If I do as you wrote, Check Applications, Private Apps and Dalvik Cache, will the future apps I install be installed to the Ext4 drive or do I need to do this every time I install new apps etc?
Also I havent messed with my Hboot, I just followed that guide, and one step was to download that alpharev cd and turn S-Off, nothing else.
Thanks again!
As long as you have Cyanogenmod set to install apps to the Internal, you'll be fine and apps will be moved to EXT4 automatically.
Go to Settings>CM7 Settings>Application>Install Location>Internal
The thing to keep in mind here is while using S2E (or any scripts that do the same) is that the EXT4 partition acts as an extension of your internal memory. Although you aren't going to see your phone's internal memory increase in size.

To make full use of your 1GB ext4 you need a Rom with data2sd , data2ext , xd2sdx. Your using app2sd+ witch dont fully move all app data to sd ext4, say you download a 20mb app 15mb would go to ext4 and the other 5mb would still be on real internal.
Using a Rom with data2ext ect put the ext4 partition has your internal storage showing you 1GB and all app data will go there.
Worked perfectly, thank you so much, now I can get more then 5 apps installed!
I dont really care about the numbers, aslong its on the ext4 and I can install the apps
Thank you for your assistance.
I'm interested in trying this too. Right now I have oxygen with darktremors installed, but would switch back to cm7 if this would give me more space for apps. If I do a nandroid backup and restore, will the apps that had been moved to the sd card be restored properly?

So the reason that my data storage is looking like this, could be because I'm running MIUI which uses A2SD not fully moving my apps?
Because I already moved everything I was able to move with s2e.
The link doesn't seem to work because I'm new: This is what it was showing:
Data: used 89 % (used 132 MB, free 15 MB)
ext: used 6 % (used 32 MB, free 440 MB)
cache used 2% ((used 1MB, free 38 MB)

Storage problems

I recently bought this phone from a friend, when i realized that i only have 25 mb of internal storage for use, with all apps installed on my SD card. I've read many threads but i didn't find any solution yet. I'm currently running the cyanogenmod 7.1.0.Desire with android version 2.3.7. I just wanted to ask if there is any way to increase the memory i can use. Thank you for your replies

I didnkt know Cyanogenmod, but here are some functions named like ap2sd, ap2sd+, datasd+ ...
If you Read Installing Howto i think there are some Informations about to add apps onto sd-card.
Maybe a little help to you, get in Settings -> Apps and click on the downloaded Applist on every App and show there if you can phus the app on the sd-card.
Search in Cyanogen Forum, there is for sure a way !
If you s-off you can change Hboot partition to increase data... or use a2sd or data2sd scripts...
What Hboot you using?
First, make second partition on sd card (ext2/3/4 as primary, size: 200-700MB) then go to market and search for s2e app, install it start s2e, move /data/app and if your card is 4+class move dalvik-cache too. Reboot.
That will free your internal memory. Next time when you install new app, internal memory will be minimum used.
Thank you for your quick response. Tomorrow when i'm on a PC again i will do as Qizami told me. I will reply if I achieve success or if I'll get stucked at something. I will check my hboot now and add it to this post, just in case you still want to know.

[Qext4 partition problem

hi everyone,
i just rooted and installed the Cyanogen 7.2.0.1-bravo rom and partitionned my sdcard 16gb to a FAT32 partion and ext4 partition with 1gb.
the problem is the intern memory !! ( lack of space ), idk if i missed something or didn't installed a script ... i have app2sd already installed and i moved the most of the apps to my sdcard but the ext4 partion is not used and can't see it .
so what do i have to do ?
ps: i just istalled a2sdFroyo, but doesn't help or i didn't used it right ...
pls help
when you say "i have app2sd already installed" how have you done it?
how did you partition your sd card, should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery only. if you used something else, backup your sd and repartition.
to maximise space, s-off and change hboot to cm7r2, recommend guides here (read them slowly and several times to help your understanding)
then full wipe, install rom.zip again from scratch
to enable the A2SD, one method is to install an app like S2E which can move apps automatically to sd-ext, no need to 'move to sd'. you can keep dalvik cache on internal, and move it to sd-ext if you still run out of space. internal memory will always go down as stuff builds up on internal (data partition)
whatever rom you use, install an app like 'diskusage' to browse all your partitions in future, that way you can actually see where and how your space is being used
i followed the MiniTool Partition tuto to make partitions and then i installed normaly app2sd
why do i have to reistall the rom again ?

do not use minitool, this may be the reason why you cannot use the partition at all.
backup your sd card to pc first, then use gparted, there's a video guide from the link i posted
(make sure you have a nandroid backup, titanium backup of apps and backup contacts to google)
i am advising a full wipe because i don't know how you "installed normally app2sd". if you reinstall the rom from scratch without anything else, there is less chance of things going wrong. using S2E afterwards is easy.
if you want to set up this rom or any rom properly so you don't run out of space, you should understand where all your apks, data and dalvik are stored, and what the different hboot partition tables are. it's all in the guides i linked.
i installed app2sd after i finished with the rom and the partitioning of the sdcard, and it works without any problem
i istalled now S2E and i transfered the apps to the ext folder now i have 140Mb free space and i think it's working now becuase i sync with skype and facebook and i still have the same space in my internal memory ...
what do you think ?

i would still recommend s-off and change hboot to cm7r2. this will use space more efficiently, and you can install many more apps. just read the guides i linked. you can still learn a lot more

write down your free sd-ext space then install an app from the play store. Check the space again. If it had gone down your sorted.

looks like it is working
with diskusage you can just zoom in on all your partitions including sd-ext, so if you see your app apk's there the script is working.
open diskusage again and select /system. i'm willing to bet that you're still on stock hboot. you will see a lot of free space on system partition, which is useless...
therefore still recommend (for the last time) to s-off and change to cm7r2 hboot. you seem to keep ignoring this and the guides...

oxygen a2sd internal storage issue

hello everyone. I have oxygen ROM with a2sd built in on my Desire.
my free internal storage is about 30mb and ext3 sd partition has about 800mb out of 1gb left. when I try to download some game which takes up to 40mb, google play says there is not enough free space. what should I do to download the app?
Are you sure the a2sd function is enabled in the settings menu? You can check this at:
settings-->apps-->development--> check if SD-EXT is enabled, and prefered install location is set to sd-ext under settings-->menu
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
the above reply is relevant only if you have mildwild version of oxygen.
regardless, you need to be s-off and flash different hboot to maximise space
- oxygenR2 hboot with original oxygen 2.3.2
- cm7r2 hboot with mildwild oxygen
currently, your a2sd script probably only moves apps to sd-ext, you still have app data and dalvik cache on internal? you can always check which bits of memory are stored where using an app like diskusage
change hboot first, then if you still run out of space, search for a script or zip that can also move dalvik cache to sd-ext.

Assuming the a2sd script is working, you could install S2E to simply move the app data, dalvik cache and stuff to your sd card to increase the internal space

which means you are probably on normal oxygen rom
you did not need s-off to flash oxygen. it only unlocks the nand partition so you can modify things on /system while the phone is running. more importantly s-off allows you to change hboots.
basically you are still on stock hboot with 250MB system. if oxygen rom system is say only 95MB, so you waste 155MB . oxygenR2 hboot has 100MB system, so you would waste only 5MB, and you gain an extra 250-100 = 150MB more internal memory
flashing hboot does not wipe any data:
- nandroid backup!
- flash different hboot from alpharev.nl (it should fit into oxygenR2, but check your system size using another app like quick system info pro. if it is less than 100MB it will work). search for a guide on this, i recommend to use fastboot command lines. EDIT: further reading here
- boot into recovery
- full wipe and nandroid restore

ok, so basically I don't see the point of installing new hboot to gain extra 150mb of internal storage, because since yesterday another 15mb has just disappeared so these 150mb wouldnt mean anything. I think that apps just install on internal storage like there wasnt any a2sd. check out this screenshot: s8.postimage[DOT]org/9chhb1cvn/Screen_Shot.png

it will definitely be worth it to flash a different hboot. you have 136MB free on system which is completely wasted...
you internal is being filled with app caches, app data and dalvik cache. you can use a cache cleaner to clean some things up.
i think your a2sd script is working because your sd-ext is being used. please check using 'diskusage'
flash oxygenR2 hboot first, see how you get on.
if you still run out of space, you can move dalvik cache to sd-ext as well using 'terminal emulator':

I has a similar issue with my Oxygen ROM even if I had Oxygen r2 HBOOT. Finally I solved the "space" issue by replacing default a2sd with amarullz 1.0RC1 script. I worked much better for me on Oxygen.

revolutionary means you are s-off, but still on stock hboot. you are definitely still on stock hboot if you haven't actually changed it
(you can check using various apps, like quick system info pro. if system size is 250MB you are on stock hboot)
up to you whether you want to change hboot and solve most of your problems...
hello again. sorry for this break but my phone was on a warranty repair. I finally got a new Desire and today rooted it. I flashed oxygenr2 HBOOT and Oxygen ROM + dalvik-cache2sd to avoid the problem of this topic but even now I still get my memory smaller and smaller! right now I have 325/350 mb free on phone memory and 950/1024 on sd (a2sd). not all applications installed yet so I might run out of space again. what do you think, what might still occupy my memory? how can I check if dalvik2sd works?
edit: okay, it's better than I thought cause the space doesn't descend as quickly as before (every 200mb on SD = 30mb of system). I think it should be enough for my needs so yeah, thanks for help and you can close the thread.
Sorry, but I have one more question. My free system space dropped in 2 days from 4mb to 3,5mb. will it stop or continue until it reaches 0? What does fill the memory except Oxygen ROM? What happens if I run out of space?
