Ahem, sooo I'm am strongly considering trading this phone for a thunderbolt (for the root) and I am just scared that if something is wrong with it, Verizon wouldn't give me a replacement. Anyone know whether this is true or not?
I just don't want to be stuck with a defective phone.

Wait, is your phone defective or are you just wanting root? If its defective (as in something is broken) it would depend on your warranty. From my experience, verizon only replaces a phone with the same one or of equal.
Where are you planning on getting the thunderbolt? If through Verizon or a certified reseller, then you have nothing to worry about. If you buy off cl or eBay, then it can go either way, but most likely they won't help.

If you have asurion then all you have to do is pay the deductible and they'll replace it.

Also, yes I'm doing the trade on Craigslist. I found a dude willing to trade, but I'm still afraid about the warranty thing. I just can't bear life without root. I was flashing nearly every week with the Fascinate.

I noticed you posted in another thread asking to borrow an XTC Clip. You should search on Craigslist for people that do business unlocking phones, a lot of them have them in their arsenal of tools.

Thank you so much for suggesting this! Immediately went to craigslist, and found this guy in my area:
http://pittsburgh.craigslist.org/cps/2538712939.html
Sending him an email now, and hoping to have S-OFF by the end of the weekend. If you're looking for a clip and haven't tried this, do it. This guy charges 20, which is what I would expect to throw in for use of a clip anyway.

I did this and found a place. I asked them if they used an xtc clip to unlock the bootloader. The lady swore up and down that you actually don't want to do that and that their software will work just fine and that if I unlocked my bootloader I would loose my recovery. Something tells me the just put z4 root on some phones and call it a day, or just install Su

So I'm guessing you don't have the warranty anymore?
Would the phone still be covered under manufacturer warranty? Like if the phone itself is defective, can I still get a CLNR?

What do you mean? It should have warranty.

I am 99% sure that if you trade you phone for another phone on craigslist, you will not have any warranty on the new craigslist phone. Warranty will only cover the original owner. I can't possibly see Verizon condoning people swapping their phones with one another on craigslist. The whole thing just seems real sketchy to me.
From Verizon's website:
"IX. OTHER CONDITIONS:
A. This Warranty or Service Contract is extended to the original subscriber buyer only and may not be assigned or transferred to subsequent subscriber buyers"
This would indicate to me, that if I traded or sold my phone to you, even though I have an extended warranty on it, the warranty eligibility would NOT be transferred to you. I would highly recommend NOT doing this.

So this mean no Asurion or manufacturer warranty? I sure when Verizon does CLNRs they're from manufacturer and not Asurion.
Sorry I just need to be sure before I do anything.

Actually that is incorrect I'm an indirect agent and by trading you would void the manufacturer warranty however if you put asurion on it it would be covered

I'm curious as to why everyone is so willing to use HTC dev to unlock their bootloader as opposed to wait/find for third-party solutions that don't compromise your rights to solid hardware?

Because I can't wait and so far I have no problem with Htc Centre for warranty claims for both my One V and there is no problem yet for my One X to send in to Htc Centre.
Boredem?
Like anything if you change your suspension on a car it invalidates some warranty . I did it because I wanted to enjoy my new one x. Y wait if something is already there.

This way is a fair contract between HTC and the user. That´s why i prefer HTC Dev. I know about the risks. If one rom damages my device, i have to take responsibility, like for all, i´ve decided in my life. I won´t hide me behind a bush
I unlocked with htcdev because my phones insured, if anything goes wrong I'll just make a claim saying I've lost it

Depends on what the problem is. They may determine it was caused by whatever you did.
My USB port stopped working for charging or anything else and I had an unlocked bootloader with a custom rom and they didn't say anything to me about it.

What kind of repair? I guess if it's hardware related, you should get it repaired for free, although you might need to raise your voice a little.
My WiFi is not working and the case is cracking. So do i have to relock it?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Good luck if you are in the UK... I tried sending mine back for repair but was sent straight back to me due to it being relocked. After a few heated conversations and the issue being esculated I was told that "even if the volume button fell off, it would be out of warranty" because "illegal software" had been installed. Absolutely ridiculous I know and I'm sure not even legal, (against statuary rights).. I have to read up get some info and advice before confronting them again...

Nope, that is exactly what I did.. cleaned wiped fresh official stock ruu installed.. intact if I'm not mistaken its not possible to relock without stock Rom cleanly installed..

So if the law says that you lost your guarantee because you installed illegal software and HTC uses that to deny you the guarantee, but they can't prove it, you would win in the court.
That's the thing, I was told that because I used third party software to unlock it (they class HTCdev as third party) that voided the warranty.. when they say "illegal" software it isn't actually illegal in the eyes of the law, just htc call it illegal because HTC will void the warranty...
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using xda app-developers app
The minute that you go onto HTCDev, click the agreement and then flash it as per instructions is where you waive your rights to any repair within the warranty period. It seems that sometimes they will still repair it regardless (depending on the actual problem) but I'm not prepared to make that gamble just yet. I had a Desire prior to my One X and regularly flashed rom's on this since almost day 1 of getting as I knew that it could be returned to the state that I bought it in for warranty purposes. I'm not going to attempt to root the One X until I'm close to the end of its warranty period as I'm seeing far too many people having problems with them

Consumer rights are very strong in the UK, HTC are perfectly within their right to deny you warranty, but on top of that, you have statutory rights. Those rights are with the retailer, not HTC.
Is it illegal to change your ROM, recovery, root your phone and such? Can you get in jail or fined for doing it?
lol not at all, Android is open source, which let's you do whatever you want with it.
Quick answer is nope. A lot of Americans took this issue to court with apple over jailbreaking there iPhone's. courts ruled that since we buy our phones we fully own them can put on what we like, as long as we own it. eg, android is open source so we can port and flash all the roms we like. But, we couldn't port apple os or windows phone as you need a license to own and use it. understand?

If your phone was under warranty then they wont let you claim it,it was already void since you rooted your phone.just that, they wont mind except that.
You certainly will lose your warranty nothing more

If it was illegal then the whole of xda would have been banned. The only thing that happens is the warranty is void.

Hi,
Has HTC said anything about how much it costs for them to replace the m8's battery?
I have no intention of doing this myself, but I'd like to know that my phone can last longer that 2 years.
What about for the m7? I can't find anything about a battery replacement service online nor the cost.
If it's $99 I can accept it, but anything more would not make much financial sense.
Apple charges $79, for what it's worth.
You could use your phone to call HTC and ask.

My old HTC One S still holds a charge. It's an original launch day device from tmobile, with the original battery.
My dad was using it and would get almost a week on a battery.
He's using my m7 now.
So I wouldn't really worry about it that much.

+1 What he says
There are no listing at the moment as the product is so new. Plus the phone is sealed so the normal outlets other than HTC are unlikely to stock as it is classed as a service item - in other words, for the majority it would involve a return to store. (As you say - 'I have no intention of doing this myself',')
Remember if someone has had problems this early on with the battery, they would have gone for a replacement phone (I know I would have!)
- No doubt at some point somebody will release one. but for now, your best port of call is HTC direct
Like he said^^^^^^^^^^^^
