Disire HD : Market Place Failes to Update - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My HTC Desire HD is a Generic Phone running
Android Version 2.3.3 , Software Number 2.50.405.2 and Market Place Version 2.3.4.
A friend has a Desire HD locked to 3 with a earlier version of Android software and Market Place Version 3.1.5
My version of Google Market Place has not updated for approximately 6 months even though I am aware that there have been several Market Place updates since then.
HTC today told me that because my handset is a Generic handset I am unable to receive Android Market Place Updates.
However they go on to say "I can see that your friend has a Desire HD branded by 3UK (the network). As I've mentioned before there are some differences between branded and unbranded devices when it comes to software version. Network branded devices have different ROM installed therefore the software information/updates will always be different even though the phone model is the same."
This does not sound correct to me as my friends handset s running an earlier version of Android software but he has at least 2 later generations of Market Place.
I thought Market place was pushed out to all handsets that for fill the Android Version Requirement or Higher for that release of Market Place.
Can somebody help me get my phone to update.
Thank you

Now when you say a generic version do you mean an unbranded version of a Chinese clone? There are many clones floating around so I want to be sure.

Re My HTC Desire
My HTC Desire HD is a genuine unbranded phone bought from the Carphone Warehouse and replaced under Warranty by HTC themselves.
It is not a Clone device.
Many Thanks

Branded or not?

Hi guys. I just got a new HTC Desire that was supposed to be unbranded. There is no brand splash screen when I turn it on, but there are some O2 configurations on the phone (like o2 mail, and o2 scene).
I found out that the software version (1.20.207.3) is actually a o2 branded version. I also find out that I got a SLCD Desire, if that matters
The problem is that I didn't get any Froyo update on System Software Updates. Do you have any ideia why? And is it positive that my phone is branded even without the splash screen?
Thanks
I think o2 pulled their ota again because some desire became bricked. If you want there are links to manually download the update.

Vodafone UK Have Released Offical Froyo Update!

GOOD NEWS FOR VODAFONE UK USERS WAITING ON FROYO 2.2
Connected my Galaxy S to Keis this morning at 0700 GMT & was greeted with the mesage firmware update available
Proceeded with firware upgrade & am now running Froyo 2.2 Build Number: FROYO.BUJP7
Upgrade went very smoothly using the latest version of Keis.
The Vodafone badging & splash screens have also dissapeared!
The phone is functioning 100% & does seem faster & less laggy, although as i have just upgraded i will reserve a full judgement untill i have time to test properly.
My Phone is with Vodafone UK & is completely stock with no rooting history or tweaks of any kind!
Cheers gang
Dave
How to upagrade to this version??
Just got a text by vodafone to tell me it's available (despite my handset being unbranded). Their FAQs say that due to customer feedback, it removes the vodafone animations and 360 services Bout time Vodafone listened to customers!
Yeah I had the h1 the 360 thing was **** sent it back after a week. But bought the galaxy sim-free been running 2.2 for ages now on voda.

[Q] OTA update questions

I have a factory unlocked HOX that I bought from NewEgg. The phone's default language was Taiwan English and all the packaging also matches with that, so I guess it's an Asian market device. Now, as you can probably see, I'm in Canada, on Virgin Mobile. I'm also new to Android, coming from iOS. Something I had always heard about as a negative about the Android platform was that people had to not only wait for Google to release their OS updates (eg 4.0.4), and for their device manufacturer to create their OTA update (Android 4.0.4 plus Sense 4.x I guess), but also for the carrier to roll out the updates.
So my questions are simply, "what role does the carrier have in OTA updates?", "how does this process work when you have a factory unlocked device?", and "does the fact that my carrier does not carry/officially support the HOX change anything?"
I've already received OTA updates since I got the phone, so I know they work, I'm just interested in how the whole update system works in Android, and how my OTA update availability schedule will look.
Thanks

your phone is the international unlocked version. in fact its the taiwan version which in some and most cases, gets the update before the europen and asian N HK ones. If there is an update, you would be the first to receive it.
VIRGIN BELL TELUS ROGERS KOODO CHATR WIND MOBILICITY all will have no hand in your phone. they dont even know it exists

What to check when buying M9 from webshop?

I bought an M9 online from a webshop I've not dealt with before. They are quite new and had the best price, about 10+% below some other web shops that have been around longer.
The shop is in the Netherlands, but has indicated that the phone may have been produced by HTC for another European country. It's a new phone. But with market situation variability, they can get it cheaper elsewhere.
Is there anything I should check on delivery, to make sure I got "a good one". Not refurbished, not set to some exotic continent that always gets updates last...
Are there differences really in the m9 phones of EU markets? They have different SKU numbers.
Are there different RUU for different EU countries? I noticed only one
So even if (example) I get a phone for which the OTA update is postponed, I can upgrade with the EU RUU ? ... To android M.
I don't plan on rooting or custom Roms. I did that with my HTC Desire, and it was like a black hole for my limited free time. My One X+ is still stock, though I might try custom 5.1.1 after the M9 is set up...
Many thanks.

Just get an eu world wide edition (not carrier locked). It should take any nano sim straight out of the box.
I wish I stole my HTC M9.

Anyone in Australia have Nougat?

So after some uneventful conversations on the HTC live chat, I'm wondering if any of you have an unlocked HTC 10 from Australia and have the nougat update?

It started rolling out about a week and a half ago. Are you rooted? If so you won't get an OTA update. You'll need to update manually
I'm not. To my knowledge I have a stock ROM as I got this handset from JB.

Would this be an Optus OTA? To my knowledge, Telstra and Vodafone haven't released any comms about Nougat update for the HTC 10 while Optus was testing both the M9 and 10 earlier this month. M9 was definitely listed as released but 10 was still marked as being tested earlier this week.

As I understand it, JB HiFi was selling phones with either Optus or Vodafone firmware. Mine's from JB too and is on 1.95.710.3 which I understand to be the Vodafone version.
Optus update status states 'Testing Android 7.0 update and VoLTE – completion expected late February':
https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Blog/Android-Software-Updates-16-02-2017/ba-p/198463
UPDATE: Actually, Vodafone has HTC 10 listed as well as "Testing complete, awaiting feedback from HTC", hopefully that doesn't mean a long wait.

JB sold an unlocked handset which I am with on the Optus network. I am on 1.95.710.3 as well. I was under the impression that HTC sends the software to unlocked devices first specifically, and then to carriers who then distribute it for the optus devices. Would I be correct in assuming that?

That's usually the case though I'm not entirely sure about the nature of our firmware (mine's the same as yours) - is it a true unbranded retail or an unlocked carrier version? I know the Moto Razr I had in the past was an unlocked Vodafone handset.

Im not sure. I would be more inclined to go unbranded retail but again, Im not certain.
Bump.
My HTC 10 is right now in the process of downloading 2.42.710.2 (1.19Gb) OTA. It's this one:
http://ausdroid.net/2017/02/27/nougat-update-htc-10-now-rolling-vodafone-customers/
Got it as well!
Installed here too.. however no live wallpapers. I personally hate all the default graphics on the HTC10 so in MM had a Sony live wallpaper which I liked.
Anyone else here have issues with live wallpapers?
Steve
