[Q] OTA update questions - HTC One X

I have a factory unlocked HOX that I bought from NewEgg. The phone's default language was Taiwan English and all the packaging also matches with that, so I guess it's an Asian market device. Now, as you can probably see, I'm in Canada, on Virgin Mobile. I'm also new to Android, coming from iOS. Something I had always heard about as a negative about the Android platform was that people had to not only wait for Google to release their OS updates (eg 4.0.4), and for their device manufacturer to create their OTA update (Android 4.0.4 plus Sense 4.x I guess), but also for the carrier to roll out the updates.
So my questions are simply, "what role does the carrier have in OTA updates?", "how does this process work when you have a factory unlocked device?", and "does the fact that my carrier does not carry/officially support the HOX change anything?"
I've already received OTA updates since I got the phone, so I know they work, I'm just interested in how the whole update system works in Android, and how my OTA update availability schedule will look.
Thanks

your phone is the international unlocked version. in fact its the taiwan version which in some and most cases, gets the update before the europen and asian N HK ones. If there is an update, you would be the first to receive it.

Update Blocking Carriers - Name and Shame

Ok, so it appears some carriers have blocked the first update that does nothing to WP7.
To take a quote from WP7 support:
[Some Mobile Operators have the right to skip one update if they wish.
However, they can't skip the next one, which would be an acumulative update and would include the previous one.
So if your mobile operator decided to block this one, you will be getting the early March one (which will include the Feb one too)]
from Microsoft Windows Phone Forum
The concern is if they block an update that does nothing, what will they do in future?
So, lets try to isolate which ones havent updated yet - if you have a BRANDED handset that HAS OR HAS NOT been updated :
U
- name the Carrier/Branding, Handset Model and Country so others know.
As updates hit these phones, I will append the date of the update to the handset on the list.
No update
ATT LG Quantum
ATT Samsung Focus
ATT HTC Surround
T-Mobile HTC HD7 (US I assume)
T-Mobile Dell Venue Pro. (US I assume)
Telus LG Optimus 7
Telus HTC Surround
Orange HTC 7 Mozart
Orange (France)
SFR (France)
Telstra LG Optimus 7Q
Telstra HTC Mozart - UPDATE - Mid march maybe
Vodafone (Spanish) LG Optimus 7

O2 Branded HD7 Released 3/3
Vodafone Netherlands HTC 7 Trophy - Released 6/3
Vodafone (Australia) HTC Trophy - release - some other regions also 3/3
Optus - Released 3/3
Vodafone AU - released 3/3
There is also a list of carriers who are apparently confirmed to be pusing it out - but I would debate this to be totally accurate (as with the above list) as they too are sourcing their information from posts by people who may not necessarily know if their phone is Branded.

I think there was an article somewhere stating that this update is being rolled out in steps to ensure that it goes out smoothly.
i think it is quite probable that MS is also sort of dipping its toe in the water before it dives in with the first proper update.

Well, in the support team's defense, they probably wouldn't be given that information, especially the Twitter branch of it... At least not this early. I think they're just tiering the updates, and maybe holding them off until they fix this Samsung issue...
Bass Ackwards
You need to compile a list of people that HAVE received the update, not people that have not: Microsoft directly said the first update would NOT be rolled out to everyone.
Also, what's the big deal ? It's just a pre-emptive update, not something that actually matters.

India HTC One X

Anyone have a One X that Came from India? I ordered one from amazon the box says HTC India and the phones software says English-India.
Phone was not made there of course but it came from there. Any issues with that or should i be fine
The seller probably imported it from India and selling it there. (Amazon has lots of quad core factory unlocked versions which come from UK and asia ).
Other than universal problems that might be present in any One X, there is nothing special to look for in the phone coming from India. Its same as any other International One X.

Cids for branded devices...
When the updates released for the carrier. Are all cids in a folder or are the updates specific for that cid
For instance...I got tmob_005
German devices now have jellybean
Are all cids provided for in that update
Surely all Germans on t mobile don't have the same etc
Then if no I can restore my skydragon and get on with life till such time I can update.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
Just saw your question in the updates thread. I don't have any firmware.zips to check.
As I understand things.
T-Mobile Germany send out the update to all Germans who bought their phone through them. Their cid is tmob**1 or whatever. They only send out updates for T-Mobile Germany ie cid tmob**1. This is of course normal as not all T-Mobiles are joined etc.
T-Mobile UK will send out the update for tmob005. So unless T-Mobile UK and Germany are the same the German firmware.zip won't work.
I'm sure the firmware.zip contains a .txt with a list a compatible cids so it can't be flashed in error.
T-Mobile and orange are now EE but the phones have different cids so can't have the update pushed together. This will always be unless they release a multi region firmware.zip.
Orange UK have released JellyBean, even if they have merged with T-Mobile we won't see any updates at the same time I'm sure. Meaning we will have to wait even longer than usual! Or until most of Orange customers have been updated.
After waiting so long I'm sure next year will be a different story as we'll all be with Samsung or LG nexus. Maybe not even T-Mobile at all!

HTC 10 in Japan, ok for root?

I am living in Japan and I definitely want to buy the new HTC 10.
I am concerned thus that I could have problem to root it or unlock the bootloader since it's my first time to buy a phone here in Japan, not sure if that could be a problem.
I was considering to ask my friend to send it to me from UK, to have a European version.
What do you guys think? Would it be fine if I buy it here then root it as I always did?
Thanks in advance!
In Japan, too, and will be snapping this baby up hopefully when Au releases it in June (my guess, based on past summer releases and what I have seen on HTCsoku). I've had no issues unlocking and getting s-off on HTC phones (Desire then the M7, my current phone) here in the past, so I don't see why we'd have any issues this time. Hopefully, we'll get some joy from Sunshine soon enough and can find out for sure.

I was a bit concerned as I own a UK M8 now with a BiCSim provider sim card, but it seems like I cannot get a 4G signal, as I don't have band 1 unlocked on this phone.
For this reason I was a bit worried, you never know...
Just out of curiosity, what kind of ROMs are u flashing on your HTC? I mean, is there a thread specifically made for Japanese phones/ROMs?
Thanks again!
No probs. It's early days yet for everyone, things being tested, guides being made, so keep an eye on the forum. Very few people even have the phone at this point, and we are still at least a month away from Japan release. Be patient, grasshopper.
I have TWRP and still have stock on my old M7. Was easy-peasy. As far as Japan-specific phones go, in the past they have basically just been one or two sub-threads within the particular phone's forum. There are a few XDA folk based in Japan, but not so many HTC users - who knows, I haven't fiddled with my phone for almost two years, so there may be more these days). Best idea is to keep an eye out here and on local HTC fansites (like HTCsoku, as I mentioned - you might need Japanese ability to get the most out of them, mind you).

HTC in Japan
Also living in Japan. I have the HTC One rooted with Android Revolution HD 92.0 installed. I have a Rakuten Mobile sim card and LTE works fine (when available which is not at many places).
I am also planning on buying the HTC 10. I haven't yet found the detailed differences between the different versions but the Asian version may be preferable to the European version (at least that's what I decided for the HTC One).

True, I checked also on the amazon UK website and its definitely cheaper, around 85.000 yen, about 550£.
I still have a 50£ voucher on Amazon UK, still thinking to buy it there and ask my friend to send it to me, I guess even with the delivery will be much cheaper.

This is the only thing I am worried infact, because my M8 currently doesn't work with LTE here, but is basically a 2 years old phone, at that time 4G was still kind of new.
For a while I will keep looking..
I should have looked better: there are apparently only two versions available, US and EMEA (see here: http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_10-7884.php).
For Japan, the bands available are not that great.
Docomo is mostly on bands 1, 3 and 19.
AU on bands 1, 11 and 18.
Softbank on bands 1, 3 and 8.
The HTC 10 EMEA version is on bands 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 20, 28, 38, 40 and 41.
The US version is on bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 17, 20, 28, 29 and 30.
If you are on AU, you have only one band available whatever the HTC 10 version chosen.
If you are on Softbank, the EMEA version has all three bands covered.
With Docomo, either versions are possible (only two bands covered)
This was my main concern, if the HTC 10 EMEA would cover the LTE signal or not, hope it will work with my BiC SiM card, I am using Docomo carrier.
I am wondering if 2 bands are enough for a decent LTE signal thus, but if we really will have only 2 HTC 10 version, it should work..

So... anyone in Japan purchased and rooted the HTC 10 (HTV32) yet? Just about ready to make the visit to the AU store and say sayonara to my M7. I have been looking for experiences on unlocking and rooting on Japanese sites... can't see anyone having done it as yet. I am guessing jcase's method (sticky on the HTC10 forum) will work with this one just as well, but always nice to see others do these things on the exact same version of device prior to diving in yourself (well, for relative noobs like myself, it is less nerve-wracking!)

It started rolling out about a week and a half ago. Are you rooted? If so you won't get an OTA update. You'll need to update manually

Would this be an Optus OTA? To my knowledge, Telstra and Vodafone haven't released any comms about Nougat update for the HTC 10 while Optus was testing both the M9 and 10 earlier this month. M9 was definitely listed as released but 10 was still marked as being tested earlier this week.

As I understand it, JB HiFi was selling phones with either Optus or Vodafone firmware. Mine's from JB too and is on 1.95.710.3 which I understand to be the Vodafone version.
Optus update status states 'Testing Android 7.0 update and VoLTE – completion expected late February':
https://yescrowd.optus.com.au/t5/Blog/Android-Software-Updates-16-02-2017/ba-p/198463
UPDATE: Actually, Vodafone has HTC 10 listed as well as "Testing complete, awaiting feedback from HTC", hopefully that doesn't mean a long wait.
http://community.vodafone.com.au/t5...-2017-Software-Update-Weekly-Wrap/td-p/424073
JB sold an unlocked handset which I am with on the Optus network. I am on 1.95.710.3 as well. I was under the impression that HTC sends the software to unlocked devices first specifically, and then to carriers who then distribute it for the optus devices. Would I be correct in assuming that?

That's usually the case though I'm not entirely sure about the nature of our firmware (mine's the same as yours) - is it a true unbranded retail or an unlocked carrier version? I know the Moto Razr I had in the past was an unlocked Vodafone handset.
