[Q] Another rebooting EVO...but different - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright guys, I'm not exactly new here, I've been a member for awhile, but I had an iPhone 3g S for awhile and had no need of any help. I have since switched to Sprint and decides I was getting the HTC EVO 4G...go figure, I buy it no more then a ask before it takes a price cut of $50. Oh well, no big deal. Moving on to my problem, I've had it for about and overall, the phone is decent. Much like you guys, I want my phones to keep up with me and although it tries hard, it just can't. Recently I've been having two problems. The first one, a random reboot, which seems to be caused by heat/charging/overuse issues. This, I have found, is a very common issue with the EVOs and regardless of the inconvenience, its not serious, yet.
My second, albeit more troublesome, problem, is the rebooting loop, again seems to be a very common issue with the EVOs. Mine, however, seems to not fit the description. From what I've been reading, the reboots are typically on the original models, where mine is over a year newer. Another difference, my phone loads everything up, completes a sync, then reboot again. The only time it gets stuck in a reboot loop is when the phone, whether by itself or by my own doing, reboot AND has an SD card in there. I can remove the SD cars during the loop and everything works perfectly fine...except it takes me about 3 minutes to remove my SD card since I have an Otter box defender case on it.
My EVO is NOT rooted, has all current updates installed, has the OEM SD card...OEM everything actually, and all apps are installed on the phone now. When it first started happening, it was shortly after I downloaded an app update from the store for an app that was on my phone. I figured the download must have corrupted a file, the phone failed to load it, then reboots. I would uninstall the apps I thought to be the culprits, reinstated the SD card, everything worked, until a few minutes ago, when it reboot looped on me again and I realized I no longer have apps on my SD card...what do I do? Phone works perfectly fine without the SD card installed, but I like being able to take pictures and saving them. I don't even have the option to save them locally, which is bull.
Just a quick reminder, I have searched the forums, I've also searched al of Google with no revolting loops similar to my SD card issue appearing. I have a lot of pictures on my SD card currently and have another one to try, but I'm not sure how long I'd have to wait before the boot looping happens again. Any insight would be greatly appreciated and if I happened to have missed the post where there was already a fix for this, I'm sorry.
P.S. I'm sorry for any grammar or spelling mistakes, the autocorrect on Android isn't near as Goo as iOS. I love Android, but if I have to get a new phone, I'm going back to the iPhone.

Hey guys, mainly just a bump, this is a fairly big issue and I'd like to atleast know what you guys think. If it happened to you, what would be your first course of action. Is there maybe another thread that covers this that I missed? Should I just yell at Sprint and tell them I want a new phone? Is there more information I should provide? If so, what? Thanks for any help.

I would suggest running an RUU, first, I am on my phone so I don't have a link. Other than that, I would say take it in to the store

Found the latest RUU for you:

Download it, click on it. The instructions are self-explanatory

you said you've had the phone "about a " but then you didn't fill in the time frame. So either you're Christopher Nolan or i'm assuming you meant a short period of time. if that were the case - in all honesty, i would just exchange it out.
you haven't rooted, it's all stock, you haven't really put much effort into it - why not just go swap it out.
that's what i would do anyway...
i got my evo pretty much at launch. i have a stuck pixel and the screen white issue - i was too lazy to return it and didn't want to wait for the exchange so i have just lived with it for 18 months. sometimes i wish i'd exhanged it, but i had already put quite a bit of time into rooting, tweaking etc. you haven't - so why not just start over?
And not to bash the iPhone - my wife has one - but after using the Evo i could never go back to using an iphone... just sayin

[Q] CM 7.0.3 Random Reboots Even After Clean Install

I've racked my brain and searched the forums so I'm hoping someone has some insight here. Recently my phone has become unstable...I can't do too much in a single sitting without it rebooting. I've been on CM7 for a while now and had been trying the nightlies so I thought it was maybe that or just left over garbage from the upgrades so I decided to do a clean CM7 install yesterday (factory wipe). After I got through the setup and started to download gmail (1st non-stock app) from the market my inc rebooted. I flashed Chad's latest kernel thinking maybe it was a kernel issue...still reboots.
I then decided maybe it was the battery because at times I will get into a couple of reboots back to back and then the phone turns off and vibrates three or four times. But when I get the phone booted and check the battery temp it is maybe 98F which doesn't seem to be above average based on my forum readings. I then swapped batteries with my wife (unrooted inc) and we both launched plants vs. zombies and started playing. After maybe 10 min, I got my first reboot and then another a few minutes later so I just turned the phone off...she kept playing.
Now of course I have to point out my wife works for Verizon Wireless so I'm getting extra grief for rooting my phone and she is saying that is the cause since she never has reboots. Not that I want to prove my wife wrong, I really just want a phone I can do more than make phone calls on, but someone please tell me she isn't right. My reboots only seem to happen when I've had the screen on for a while...3 hour conference calls have no issues. Can you give me suggestions of things to try to help narrow down the issue? Thanks in advance!
Phone Info:
Baseband:2.15.00.07.28
Kernel: 2.6.37.6-incredikernel-gb-04192001
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.0.3-Inc
Build: GRI40
I get similar problems but it happens when i am watching youtube videos or playing games, or sometimes out of nowhere. Can't figure out and it is really annoying.
Copy sd to pc, reformat sd fat32, copy stuff back to sd. Helped a friend with hers.

Thanks I'll give that a try. I did try running the phone without a card at one point and it didn't help any.
AOSP Roms, like CM, interact with the sd on boot. Don't expect aosp roms to boot without sd.....
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
OK, performed the the SD format last night and just got around to running apps today. Again, I tried Plants vs Zombies and after about 20 mins the phone rebooted...I had been an hour long conference call before that. The phone rebooted and got to the startup screen and then rebooted again but at least this time it finished booting which is an improvement over before. Also, thanks for the tip about AOSP roms not booting without an SD card.
I did notice yesterday when it rebooted on me, after a couple of bootloops the screen then went black and the phone vibrated 5 times. I was only on a short phone call yesterday while in my car for 10 min.
On a side note, I haven't partitioned my SD card with an app partition but I was wondering if it is necessary for moving apps to the SD? I have moved several apps to SD so I want to make sure that isn't causing an issue either.
had the same problem myself, did a clean install which didn't help, finally reinstalled 7.0, all working fine now

Thanks Snappy...I never really thought about reverting. I've give it a try later today and report back.
Alright, so last night I performed a factory wipe and installed CM 7.0. Everything went fine but as soon as the ROM loaded and I opened the market it rebooted on me. This morning I just performed another factory wipe and installed MIUI thinking maybe it might be a ROM issue, but I got the same results. As soon as I opened the market to start installing stuff it rebooted on me...I tried this twice and reboot each time the market opened. I guess next I'll try a sense rom, Skyraider maybe...I'll post back with the results.
Warranty replacement
I was having pretty much the same issue. I tried everything from countless forums for the last month and a half. Finally had to cave and get a warranty replacement. - just pointing out that it might be a hardware issue (my device ran hot w/o sd and stock OS)
If the problem is following you on multiple roms it sounds like its probably a hardware issue.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
I've bounced around between various forums/posts and I think I have to agree it is probably a hardware issue. Being that I'm out of warranty, my only alternative is to upgrade or buy another Inc. Given the small pricing difference, buying another Inc versus upgrading, the logical choice seems to upgrade.
So my upgrade choices that are currently available are Inc 2, Thunderbolt, or Revolution. Another option is wait for the Bionic to come out in a few months. Any suggestions? I'm personally leaning towards the Thunderbolt...
Thanks again everyone for your help.
Well if you need to update now, I'd say the thunderbolt is probably your best choice. If you can wait, the bionic, if unlocked, looks like quite a phone, but IMHO the galaxy s2 is the phone to beat.
Have you tried getting a replacement? I suppose if you got your phone when it first came out the one year warranty might be up but it never hurts to try.

I haven't tried, but we did get the phone when they first came out last year so we are a couple of months past the one year warranty. My wife looked it up though and since we are available for an upgrade at this point the likely scenario is VZW pushing me to a new device rather than replacing my dying one.
I agree, the Galaxy S2 does look nice but since my wife works for VZW I'm kind of stuck with them.
I'm tempted to limp along until the Bionic comes out to see what it has to offer. As long as I can make calls I'll be ok...I guess Plants vs. Zombies will have to wait.
The GS2 is coming to Verizon. Not exactly sure when, there was a rumor that it'll be next month but I don't know how for sure that is.

I had to go refresh my memory on the exact GS2 specs, then I had to wipe the drool from my mouth. I haven't heard of Verizon getting it within the next couple of months so now I'm even more bummed.
I guess it will kind of depend on how long my phone holds out. The random reboots and shutdowns can be annoying and have become all too frequent if I do anything more than make a phone call...sometimes even then it shuts down.

Reboot problem, need help

Ok, i did a search but not much help.
i have been having reboot problems but i normally take the batt out and let it sit for a while and it boots back up.... reason why i have to pull the batt is because the reboots dont stop.
i was using the phone and it started to reboot... but now no matter how long i let it sit it wont boot back up... just reboot.
i did flash a splash screen using pc36img and it does work but thats it.. it reboots..
im going to try and let the phone "rest" for a couple of hours but i have a feeling that wont help this time.
anything else you guys can think off?
it wont boot into recovery either.. it did when i pull the SD card but i dont think the card it bad, since i took it off and placed it in my pc to add the new splash screen.
i was reading some threads and some people said they had hardware problems that where causing the reboots so this may be the case with me as well.
ideas?
Need more info... which ROM? Which radios? How's your signal? Etc

well, i have been using the latest Miui with the latest radio update with PRI etc.
i have been having the reboot problem for a little while but like i said, i can normal solve it by pulling the battery and after a few minutes turning the phone back on.
no matter the rom, it still this did.
today we where having problems with the signal... we are getting 4g updates
but, i think think that would cause the phone not to boot up.
i could be wrong of course
Seeing as it doesn't appear to be a specific ROM issue, it could be a hardware issue, such as a bad memory block, which if that's the case, obviously there is little advice besides take it to Sprint and try to get a replacement phone.
But if that is the only solution, I'd advise you to wait until a root method for the latest ota is available because your replacement phone would come with the latest, unrooted firmware and you'd be stuck without root. So if dealing with the reboot issues is possible ( though I'm sure frustrating) I'd hold out for the potential root method to be released.
i was putting up with the reboots since i am planning on getting the evo 3d. but i need a phone. i havent touched it for a while so i hope that somehow helps lol but if not i plan on going to the sprint store tom morning as soon as the open.. i have an hour cause i have to be on base at 10:00 and i dont want to be without a phone all day.
hope they can give me a replacement and i dont have to wait for one to be shipped.
this sucks
the thing that kinda worries me is that they know i root my phones, hell i have shown them a few things as well as the Evo with it 1st came out.. i ordered by phone and they didnt have the phone till later.
anyways..
thanks for the help.. it has to be hardware related, dont think it can be anything else.
it it just booted but as soon as it got up and running it rebooted again... damn it
Well. Got a new out of the box evo. They didn't have any at the warehouse.
So here I am with a stock evo. Boo lol but no reboot problem, so I'm happy.

[Q] Boot loop problem

Hi, I have a few questions I hope you can help me with?
My wife has a galaxy nexus, stock and unrooted. It is only around 6 weeks old and last week it started crashing, turning off then getting stuck in a boot loop just displaying the starting colours. I understand this is a known problem, she has software version 4.0.2 and it says her phone is up to date.
I "fixed" her phone once with a factory reset however this time she is away with work till Friday and now has no use of her phone or contractual minuets or data ect.
To make things worst she was planning on using the sat nav and wireless tethering to her laptop. It is the second time this has happened and she has lost all faith in her phone. She can maybe upgrade the software by downloading the 4.0.4 software but she/I don't see why she should have too. She just wants a phones that does what it says on the tin without needing to mod or mess around with it.
My questions are...
Is this problem enough for her to exchange the phone for another phone all together, she fancies a One X. Has anyone here managed to exchange the phone for this reason?
If not will updating the software to 4.0.4 fix the issue for sure? She really needs a reliable phone. Maybe it will be best to send it back under the warranty but we are afraid she will get another GNex with the same issue.
Any advice will be much appreciated
Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading,
Oliver
I would just try updating it and then wipe it. If that doesn't fix the issue it's most likely a hardware issue and I would warranty the phone.

Hey there,
Well first I would suggest calming down and not reverting to hardware issues just yet, Bootloops are pretty common, especially when using phones which were meant for the (a bit) more advanced user, it's advantage is also it's flaw, being a modding monster that it is..
And this is by no means a flame - but I wouldn't want my wife to have a GN for that exact same reason, yes - she knows about flashing roms and stuff, but she needs a reliable phone, that will work and do what she needs it to do and nothing more, as opposed to me, I like to mess around a bit with my phones (also not that much, I plan to stay stock with my GN).
To your question, I don't have any experience with RMA's but it maybe worth a try.
You also mentioned she fancies the one-x.. that means she wasn't really keen on buying the GN in the first place (I believe).. and also - and don't take this the wrong way - I think she\you don't really know what the GN is all about, this isn't a phone for everybody, I mean - it is, but it's a shame to see it fall into hands that do not appreciate it for what it is, think of it as a nice new Ferrari, sure - it'll get your wife to work But she is not going to the Nurborgring to time her laps with it.. she'll complain that once in a while the clutch is too sensitive and that she cannot count on the car to take her to work every day, and that she really fancies the new Volkswagen beetle... you get my drift
Also - I believe that flashing to the 4.0.4 will sort the bootloops, which usually has everything to do with the kenrel.
Best of luck!
p.s. All of the above is said in a humoristic way!

My wife wanted to upgrade her htc desire to a faster phone with bigger screen, she loves android and Google products and the Google nexus seemed like the best choice at the time (b4 the one X was released) she loved the phone till now.
The phone has twice randomly gone into a boot loop and twice we managed to get it working again both times within the week. This has caused her to lose faith in the phone. I guess the update should fix the issue but it doesn't seem to be available on her phone just yet.
A basic phone would not be enough 4 my wife, as I said in my first post she uses it to connect her laptop to the Internet and as a satnav. Also she watches youtube videos (720p screen is handy here) and for facebook.
We never had any such issues with our desires. When my wife returns home we will update her phone via pc if it doesn't void warranty (I'm sure it won't ) and hopefully the issue will be fixed for good.

Sounds like our wives can get along my wify loves her htc desire hd! and to be honest, in my opinion in many ways it's much better than the sensation I had (stock).
And by what you described, if I was your wife (lol ) I'd also go for the GN.. I trust you know how to upgrade to 4.0.4, if you need any help just say so and I'll be more than happy to help
Also - from what I know upgrading will not void you warranty, you can simply lock the bootloader once you're done upgrading if you wish.
I really wish the bootloops will stop and that you wife will continue to enjoy her GN!
Hi again
I unlocked, rooted and installed Android Revelution HD 3.0.0 (based on 4.0.4) by mike1986 on her phone.
She is happy with her phone again.
Now it's rooted she likes the extra apps she can now install like AdFree.
I have a quick noob question though..
After installing the new rom her phone it said their is an update available. I understand that she should NOT accept over the air updates now she has a custom rom, and is that right?
Cheers, Oliver
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Hey Oliver, sorry.. seems I didn't get subscription notifications on your reply...
anyway, she "can" download the update, but it will not install, it will simply give an error upon installation, the reason is the original files that the update needs to update are not there anymore, or they are but have changed, so it will just give an installation error.. that's the only downside to having a custom rom. me personally - I like mine stock at the moment
Just a quick update, I rooted, s- offed and install Arhd rom on my wife's gnex.
She says her phone is running faster/smoother than ever and has not restarted since. It's running great and she is happy again

[Q] Help with system_server deadlock(s) restarts

Let me first apologize if this is already addressed elsewhere, I tried searching to no avail. I should also say that I'm running rooted stock roms (seen this on both EL13 and EL29), but I really don't think root has anything to do with the problem.
I've had my E4GT since the weekend they came out, but for the last several months of been struggling with occasional system instability. Basically, sometimes the system will lock up and restart and then only stay up for a few minutes before restarting again... in a near endless cycle. If I shut the phone down and allow it to cool off... I can power it back on and maybe 1 out of 10 times it will stay up... and then it's stable for several weeks!
During the restart cycle, I've observed that system_server is consuming and inordinate amount of CPU.
Through trial and error I've determined that the problem is related to my SD card. I initially thought it was just a corrupt SD, but after several "slow" re-format's and two different cards, the problem eventually returns. I finally noticed that if I pull the SD card while the phone is off and boot it sans SD... its fine. However after re-inserting/mounting the SD card... 9/10 times the phone will begin its restart cycle.
I finally broke down and got out adb to capture bugreports. Based on what I'm seeing... this sounds quite similiar to an Issue on the Galaxy Tab reported here. In fact, reading that post is what made me finally pull the trigger and try EL29 (with no luck).
My limited understanding of what's going on is that something is causing the phone to deadlock (or at least think its deadlocked) and that's causing the WATCHDOG to kill/restart the system. Given the tie to the SD card, I feel like it either has something to do with (1) the media scan or (2) with apps being "mounted" from the SD card, or perhaps (3) a particularly misbehaving app that resides on my SD.
Running without an SD isn't going to cut it for me. I have way too many apps installed and way too much media (mostly podcasts). If it turns out to not be (1) or (2)... I'm just not ready to "shotgun" my way through my apps. I'm more than willing to toss a bad app, but given I have no idea where to start. I'm at a loss.
I've posted the adb bugreports on Google Docs here for both EL13 and EL29.
If anyone has any good ideas on how to debug this further, I would appreciate it. I'm this close to bailing on this phone, but frankly I don't have the money (or upgrades) to do it right now.
Well, after over a week of stability, this evening my phone brushed up against my leg and was burning hot. Sure enough I found it repeatedly restarting android again. Rebooted without the sd and it was fine for a
Half-hour. Reinserted the sd and it restarted again within a few minutes.
If anyone has clues as to what to look for, I would highly appreciate it.
Thanks
-Alan

Still an issue. Still looking for help. I'd post this in Development, but I don't have privs. I'd appreciate it if anyone that does would be willing to call this to the attention of the development community.
Only updates are:
1) I've tried freezing 90% of the apps I have installed on the SD.
2)I also purchased a new, Samsung class 10, 32gb sd card hoping that Samsung's cards would play nicer...
Neither appeared to have helped.
For the record, I'm open to flashing roms or editing system files... just not sure what to try next.
Thanks in advance.

Also curious why you haven't brought it in for warranty replacement yet. I wouldn't have waited this long.
Mostly because this doesn't feel to me like a defect. Maybe it is... and maybe I should have... but it feels more to me like a bug that something in my particuliar configuration has stumbled across.
I don't have any kind of extended warranty and I'm not sure what the original warranty on the phone is.
Finally I'm rooted, which voids the warranty. I can certainly undo that... but if it's not warranty-related and/or I'm going to have to pay out of pocket... it doesn't seam worth the trouble to me.
I suppose I can always walk into a Sprint store and ask about the warranty status.
As for the battery suggestion.... I don't see how that's relevant. I get generally quite good battery life. Looking at the bug reports you can clearly see that the system_sever has a deadlock processing trying to access a List in Java (with another process that remains a mystery to me).
Ok, well are you up to trying a full wipe and reprovisioning? I mean factory reset and reprovisioning, format both SD's and one-click odin back to stock rooted with CWM (in about that order). I don't know what you're running but it couldn't hurt to try. I posted 2 different things for this, I'm sure you're familiar with some of this:
Reprovisioning (it's not that hard but you have to follow the instructions):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26131653&postcount=4244
Format, one-click:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24056900&postcount=9930
Btw, the warranty is one year for our phones. Even if you don't have insurance, taking it to Sprint will probably cost about $35.00 for them to troubleshoot and send the phone out (nothing is free at the Sprint store ). Maybe they'll just give you another one outright, I can't say.

Galaxy Nexus death scheduled ?

Hi,
I've got my GN for about 2 years now. It always runned fine. I use it essentially to make calls, mails, some european "anti-cop" app called "icoyote", spotify and that's it
Everything stock, full google official, no cracked bull**** apps or whatever.
Ok so now for about 1 month it became less and less stable. It literally happened from one day to another. I guarantee i didn't add/change or remove anything.
Main issues are : spotify crashes many times (~20 to 50) a day and 50% of the time the GPS fix fails to go trough, but a simple reboot and it work's instantly.
So I tought I should make a full factory reset. I did that and the issues I was experiencing remained the same.
Now comes the 1million $ question : how the heck can something stop to work from one day to another ? If it was some *unpredicted*, classic hardware failure, a simple reboot would definitely not solve it, for sure.
Leading to think it has to be software related..OK, so a factory reset should solve : it doesn't neither.
Why are those apps crashing even in a very stock/factory config? I even did skip this google restore profile bull**** to be sure i'm workng in a perfect clean state.
The only logic conclusion is that there must be some kind of hard coded counter which reached the end and is now triggering randomly something, *i don't know based on what, or activated how* making this **** happen
It's very very very frustrating because it was working like a charm those past 2 years and i thought it was a good investment. I was obviously wrong, another death scheduled device.
Now with the 4.3, I got the feeling it becomes even worse. Today, I had to reboot 4 times to get a gps fix (working 100% of the time just after the reboot) and it was a hassle to get trough 2 songs without being cut off in the middle of it.
FU samsung
But you only tried to flash 4.3. It's like giving a patient only 1 medicine and when that not works declare him dead. There maybe other ways to revive your phone..

there's nothing left to try, since my last basic test's where made in a official google factory default situation on a google phone
it's just stock u see? everything else i could try from this point would lead to a non-default situation making every further considerations totally pointless
Well, if i'm right, the so called "crash-routine" would *maybe* not be present in a custom rom, but, again, it worked before and has to work the same way now.
I refuse to use any other workarounds than factory resetting it and, since i already did that a few times, i'm done
i'm not awaiting some kind of help here. i'm just exposing my case and the frustration i'm feeling since samsung nicely dry-fcked me ^^
Don't know why you're acting up for no reason.
It doesn't take a genius to understand and figure out that applications designed and updated for 4.2.2 will most likely not work on 4.3 until the devs update it to work on 4.3. Which, from my experience, doesn't take long at all. That's probably one of the solutions to your few problems.
Way to take things a little too far and throw a tantrum rather than seeking help.
Also, if you have no intentions of seeking a fix then you didn't need to post anything at all.
You're not waiting around here for help? Well, I'm not going to offer help to someone with that kind of attitude.
Peace out you won't be missed.
BTW, there's nothing left to try? LOL
There's about 7 things left to try and one of them would have definitely worked 100%. Figure it out on your own since you know everything.
Read this. It's called Planned Obsolescence. Manufactures purposely make devices with limited lifespan in order to upgrade to their next new device.
