Is there any methods on how to unroot the phone?
i was wondering the same thing, i'm gonna go exchange my phone tomorrow at noon due to the vertical lines on the screen. i just installed the deodexed rom and deleted superuser.
follow instructions from this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311229
already tried it, i can still boot into recovery.
I think someone needs to post a CWM or Odin flashable stock recovery image. I'm not sure when that's going to happen since we replace it with a custom recovery to get root. I have a feeling we may need to wait until someone releases a custom kernel/system image that is pre rooted. At that point someone with a virgin phone should be able to flash that and pull an image of the stock recovery.
However, I could just be talking out of my ass since I'm not a dev ...

I agree. A Odin that would flash the stock kernel and stock recovery would be very handy incase you need to return the device. I'd worry about returning the phone with a custom recovery and voiding some sort of tmo warranty.
I am also looking for a way to get the original recovery back.. is there a way to do this or will we have to wait?
If you did nandroid backup before installing the zip file then all you need to do is restore that backup.

And how would you go about getting a nandroid backup without the custom cwm recovery? I'm pretty sure nandroid won't backup the recovery partition anyways. This isn't like other devices like the vibrant where recovery is built into the kernel or you just start a custom recovery by loading an update.zip from the stock recovery.

Does anyone have the stock recovery? or a way to put it back to stock completely? If not your looking at a huge Out of warranty fee if returns are needed.
Couldn't you just follow the instructions here:

No, looks like that will not put the stock recovery back on so it will be evident in the event of an exchange that it is rooted and the Out of warranty fee will be assessed.

Or is there a way to remove the recovery from the phone that will work too (for an exchange)
This is what's keeping me back from rooting so far. I want to know for sure I can go back to stock before I do anything. Hopefully this will come soon.
I might be exchanging my phone and wonder if they would notice that it was rooted. Kinda want to test everything on this phone and then I will figure out what to do with my new phone. What do you guys think about them finding out??
Ya, I would love to see a way to restore the stock recovery also. I rooted to see if chainfire would help with all of the game crashes that i have been experiencing but it didnt and now I want to restore the stock recovery so that I can do an exchange.
you must have clockworkmod recovery installed before continuing

anybody have this problem when trying to access rom manager?
Can someone with a higher pay grade than me explain what's involved in order to get the file/image for stock recovery? Just trying to understand the process involved. Does anyone know if this is being worked on now?
Thanks, in advance.
I hope this comes soon because I am itching to root this thing and get rid of the bloatware. Eaglesblood rom is calling me.

If you noitce....the recovery is called CMW and in the recovery refers to itself as "CWM-Based". It's not from Koush is my understanding and that's the way of the world.
Check the dev section koush just released cwm officially for our phone

This is what you are looking for but I am not sure if I would recommend doing a restore back to gb without more research. I am pretty sure a couple people have bricked there phone trying to restore to gb from ics.
if you wanna restore a GB backup you should really just ODIN back to EL29 and use sfhub's auto root package to push CWM to your phone. after that its safe to do the restore.
mobile odin
I recommend mobile odin. Well worth the $. It's very easy to use and helpful if you don't want the hassle of using your computer.

The easiest way would be to flash a working recovery using Mobile Odin and then boot into your recovery and backup/restore. To do this, download a ODIN version of the recovery you need. It will come in the form of a .tar file most likely. From there, open Mobile Odin, find your .tar file, click it, and then flash. Then you should be able to boot into recovery using Vol Up and Power. This is handy if you are flashing some of the most current ICS roms that dont have recovery's built in yet. Just make sure that you flash a recovery that will work with your existing setup (kernel, rom...etc).
PS, if you find this helpful, please click the "Thanks" button. I normally wouldn't ask but would like to post to some Dev threads and need a better "score". Thanks!

I haven't had any issues yet but I have heard of people who have. I agree, the best way is to odin back to stock, then cwm kernel, then restore. Best thing is that it is easy to do with Mobile Odin.
Mobile odin is the same thing as the PC version and is good to have when you dont have access to a computer.
Steady and sfhub said they think it's the ics kernels that are doing it ...something about how they handle the data partition a little different ....better to be safe and I use mobile odin pro all the time ....love that it keeps itself and gives root on stock makes it much easier ... Triangle away well reset the odin count but only in ics roms but use that and mobile odin answer never have triangle or up your count

The CWM or Team Win recoveries will not stick after rebooting the phone with w OTA update. There is a way of making recovery stick on the rooted OTA update. Does anyone know the correct files to freeze or erase for the new recoveries to stick?????
Is there another way of these recoveries to stick besides flashing a custom Rom??

I have root, I have Goo Manager, I'm on a completely stock rooted rom and every time you reboot the new OTA software over writes the custom recovery to the stock Android recovery. If you have a custom rom this will not happen, only on a stock, rooted OTA latest update rom. Others are having the same issue.
Vinny
What methods did you use to install the ota and root?
Have you tried flashing the stock rooted version wildchld released?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I waited for the OTA update then used Odin to flash root, did not reboot after flashing with Odin, pulled battery, then went right to recovery and flashed super user.zip file. I rooted my phone the right way. This is my 2nd SGS3 and didn't have this problem with the 1st one because it had the older build. This is not a problem if you are on a custom build. Only stock, rooted with latest OTA build.

Guys, I have seen this on my GF's GSII (Sprint) as well as on my nexus 7. They are placing a file called recovery-from-boot.p in the /system/ directory that overwrites recovery on every boot. I put a guide a few post up that outlines the issue when I saw it on my GF's phone.
Personally my T-Mobile has been fine, but this scenario I have dealt with before. So don't flame that bad.
The bottom line is that without some custom modding, if you're running the official stock OTA update, stock kernel, etc, standard CWM recovery is not going to stick.
Plain and simple.

Ok, both files were present as described in your guide.
Renamed both to:
recovery-from-boot.bak
install recovery.sh.bak
Reflashed CWM through ROM Manager. Rebooting now, then will try power off & booting into recovery. Hang tight
*Edit: Worked like a charm. Gentlemen, we have the solution. Thanks due (and given) to cybrnook both here and in the guide

I would argue, I have a stock rooted rom, stock kernel and I update to the new OTA update via Kies and TWRP has stuck every boot since then. I even tested it again when I saw this thread as it made me unsure.

Maybe the Kies version is different than the OTA.
Maybe TWRP overwrites or renames/deletes the files causing it.
But you can't argue with my posts, because I said official OTA update, and CWM.

No worries, but for clarification to all the read this thread. The update from Kies is the exact same Official update as the OTA, so if you have not been prompted for the update yet from T-Mo, just install Kies on your PC and plus your phone in, it will prompt you for the update.
I have another guide I made for that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1842142
For the recovery, installing twrp or CWM wont remove the two files I listed. This is done manually. I know on the sprint side, they made a root Super User package that swiped those off specific to the sprint phone. But I opted away from that for my GF as I Prefer SuperSU and am anal retentive about installing something I don't want and uninstalling it.

ingenious, it's not present on all phones. Like mine for example, I have been fine since day 1 of owning the phone. But my GF's sprint phone had the persistent install present.
It's strange, some phones don't have it at all, some only have the .p file, and some have both. I have not found the common denominator yet.

I have the TMobile Galaxy s3 rooted on most recent stock firmware. I installed a new font using rom toolbox after backing up firmware with TWRP, so it though. After installing the font I got a message telling me to reboot for changes to take effect. Reboot hangs at the glowing Samsung logo. I have rebooted in to recovery and it comes up with CWM recovery vice TWRP some how? I know I flashed TWRP through rom toolbox but it didn't take apparently. I did get a message that backup was successful. CWM will not recognize TWRP backup. I need a flashable zip for the correct TWRP recovery. Could someone please point me in the right direction for the TWRP recovery file or to get me out of this boot loop. Should I just flash the stock firmware?

Get in recovery and make a nandroid backup. You can also use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and data. You'll have to made a copy of those files on your pc to get them back once your phone is back.
You'll have to reset the flash counter (while you're rooted), flash stock firmware with Odin (can be found in the Dev section) and factory reset in recovery.
Also, backup your pics and such (DCIM folder) to your pc if you wanna keep them.
Last thing, take time to search next time it has been covered quite a few times.

he said the micro usb port isnt working though. all this below is assuming you made a nandroid and have a micro sd card.
here's a link to a page that details how to setup your phone for return. this page is for the i9300 but i've included the links for i747 to use whenever an i9300 file is requested. after your nandroid restore and initial boot, see what base band you're on to know which modem you might need. read over the link a few times to become familiar and proceed at your own risk.

Hednik is right. If you've accomplished a successful odin flash (no errors) go ahead and wipe data/cache in recovery. After flashing stock in odin, it is common for phones to bootloop or stick at the samsung logo. A wipe usually resolves this

Here is a link for recovery flasable stock firmware. Flash it the same way you flashed CM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161667
Edit, didn't see someone already posted thus. Flash that triangle away unroot then make sure to clean up all your files from the root of your SD card or any files that might suggest you've modified the device and you should be good to go.

I've never used mobile Odin so I'm not sure. If that's how you flashed CyanogenMod then yes.

Hello I tried to flash pure stock then recovery per instructions and now my t999l is stuck on android system recovery can someone plz tell me if I have bricked my phone crying hard right now
In recovery, factory reset. Then reboot and it should work fine.
Stock recovery will wipe your internal sdcard.

Post is difficult to decipher, but I take it that the stock recovery is overwriting his custom recovery... but then the rest of the post doesn't make any sense. Needs clarification.

Mr. Doc I so appreciate you!!! First time posting to thread and Im grateful of your timely response. Let me just tell you exactly whats going on
my phone is in the android system recovery what I am seeing is green android man with a red warning over top of it. it will not let me do anything and I see a message saying "MANUAL MODE" successfully applied multi CSC. It won't connect to ODIN OR Kies Im so scared that I have ruined my phone crying very hard
Odin doesn't work unless you're in download mode.
What happens when you reboot? If it takes you to recovery, boot into download mode (power+vol down+home) and flash a stock image.

Also this happened after I flashed the pure stock then I flashed the recovery and the phone automatically went to what I have explained in prior post
When the phone is recovery it doesn't let me do anything factory/reset or anything and when i put in download mode it doesn't connect to ODIN
What rom were you previously using? And you do have a T999L right? You won't be able odin flash any stock firmware because there isn't any.
Try again to get into download mode. If you can boot recovery you should be able to get there too I'd imagine.
Hold volume down and home while powering up.
If you can do this, odin flash either cwm from aerowinders sig, or twrp from mine. Then reflash whichever rom you were running before trying the pure stock rom.

Hello I'm a she lol but what originally happened was I rooted phone through Odin. Then when I looked in Twrp and cwm it kept saying i had no recovery image. I went through thread on here and saw someone with same issue and follow Mr. Doc's instructions pertaining to the pure stock and recovery and this is where i landed. Im in download mode so yes i see my phone is not ruined lol I just need the file Mr. Doc is telling me about to reflash because im now connected to odin. I had to use another computer. I greatly appreciate all the time taken to help me get my phone back to working order. Since I am new I need to find the place where I can give a lot of Kudos to mr doc and his team now all i need is where to i go for mr doc file
In my signature, click Recoveries. Then in the twrp folder download version 2.5.0.0. Get the one that's a .tar.
Then once connected to odin, click the PDA button and select the tar file you just downloaded. Then click start.
Once done it should auto reboot. Now reboot into recovery and try doing a factory reset there.
If you still can't boot after that, flash the other, deodexed rom from my T999L thread.
I've got to go for a bit but will try to jump back on soon to see how you're doing.
Sorry bout the he/she thing!

Mr. Doc when I go into goo.im it tells me in order to flash roms i need an open recovery scrip compatible recovery then it says it can find one for me thats where im lost and getting confused about whether i have a recovery on the phone. but if im right that means i can't right?
Neither CWM or TWRP have added support yet, though it should be as simple as asking. Ill try to contract them in a bit.
You can manually install any of the latest recoveries for the T999 though. They have been confirmed working by several people.
Are you familiar with Odin? I suggest going to the Recoveries link in my sig and get TWRP version 2.5.0.0. The one you want has the .tar extension.
Then flash that in Odin.
If you aren't comfortable with Odin I can tell you another way using terminal emulator.
Your phone does currently have a recovery, but unless you've installed a custom one its still stock.
Also, you can flash any of the Roms posted for the T999. If the rom doesn't include a kernel, and it touchwiz based, you can flash one of the kernels in my T999L thread in development section. I'd try the MD5 kernel first so its matched with the Touchwiz rom you choose. (If you flash CM or AOSP based roms, do not use the kernels I just mentioned).
Hope that helps!

I used the Toolkit to flash mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682
Choose Device option 62 and then Flash custom recovery. It will automate the ODIN install if you are not familiar.

I am familiar with Odin i used that to get me up and running again using the sig you just mentioned. If I'm understanding you correctly you're saying I can flash a t999 rom to my t999L but use a different kernel? Also am I flashing the rom using Odin and if so do I use the same method to flash kernel? I think Im getting a clear understanding because I thought I could only root thorugh odin but install roms through cwm and twrp lol and basically I can use Odin to do it all right? I want to make sure I don't have to bother you all the time lol I should have kept my darn att s3!! thanks again Mr. Doc you truly rock!!!!
