I'm wondering how to factory reset because I'm on CM10 and I need to send my phone in for warranty.
The mini usb port on the bottom on the phone doesn't really work.
Is there any way i can download a backup file or something like that to make my phone go back into the original rom and then i can factory reset and unroot?

Get in recovery and make a nandroid backup. You can also use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and data. You'll have to made a copy of those files on your pc to get them back once your phone is back.
You'll have to reset the flash counter (while you're rooted), flash stock firmware with Odin (can be found in the Dev section) and factory reset in recovery.
Also, backup your pics and such (DCIM folder) to your pc if you wanna keep them.
Last thing, take time to search next time it has been covered quite a few times.

he said the micro usb port isnt working though. all this below is assuming you made a nandroid and have a micro sd card.
here's a link to a page that details how to setup your phone for return. this page is for the i9300 but i've included the links for i747 to use whenever an i9300 file is requested. after your nandroid restore and initial boot, see what base band you're on to know which modem you might need. read over the link a few times to become familiar and proceed at your own risk.

Good point. I'll add to this though, he can use mobile Odin to flash to stock if his micro usb port isn't working well enough.

Hey thank you guys! I haven't started this yet but when i tried to use mobile odin to flash to stock, my phone would bootloop. Do you think that will happen again if i try this? Is it mobile odin or?
Depends really on several factors. Are you able to get into stock recovery and do a factory reset in there ? Sometimes helps after flashing stock in odin

Hednik is right. If you've accomplished a successful odin flash (no errors) go ahead and wipe data/cache in recovery. After flashing stock in odin, it is common for phones to bootloop or stick at the samsung logo. A wipe usually resolves this

& This will take me from cm10 to stock correct?
If in a bootloop pull the battery and try to get into recovery. I guess I am confused...are you still on CM10 ? Have to flashed stock recovery yet ?
You said you microUSB port does work so getting download mode might be an issue but it you bootloop you should be able to get into stock recovery. Tell us that you have done already so far and where you are

Here is a link for recovery flasable stock firmware. Flash it the same way you flashed CM.

T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II Stock Kernel // UVKID
Finally guys we have root access and with root access that brings goodies, this is one of those goodies.
Explanation
What we have here is a stock boot.img (imagine that Samsung changing things up again on us) pulled from a rooted (via recovery) T-Mobile SGH-T989 (Samsung Galaxy S II).
With this you can recover your phone using ODIN, in the case of a brick or just to return to a factory state.
Initramfs for Developers
I have extracted the boot.img and posted it up for all developers on my github.
Code:
https://github.com/bubby323/stock-initramfs-UVKID-galaxysII-tmo
Downloads
Also to restore you're phone I have a nice little tar file that will take care of the job for you that you can grab from here.
How to Flash
We are going to be using Odin in this explanation to flash the stock kernel to your phone.
Downloads
First you are going to want to start by downloading all the needed files onto your computer and then place them onto your Desktop.
Samsung Kies
Odin3-v1.85.zip
SGH-T989-Stock-UVKID.tar
Process
Once you have everything downloaded and on your desktop, you are going to want to first install kies.
After this is done you should restart your computer for proper driver installation.
Next, extract Odin to a new folder on your Desktop. Leave the tar in the form it is.
Now, open up Odin by double clicking the .exe in the folder you extracted it to.
The most important step is now, you need to put your device into Download/ODIN mode so your computer will recognize it and be able to flash to it. To do this simply turn your phone off completely (or pull the battery). Then you are going to want to use the following button combination to force your device into download mode:
Hold the volume up/down and power button all at the same time.
Click to collapse
Now ODIN should have recognized your device ( it may take a while for the drivers to complete installation so don't panic the first time).
Lastly, we want to click on the PDA button and then search for the SGH-T989-Stock-UVKID.tar we download earlier and placed on the Desktop.
If all of the above has taken place you are free to hit the Start button.
Done!
If all has gone well at this point the flash should be proven successful and your phone should reboot like normal.
If so, please feel pressured to give yourself a pat on the back, that was tough!
Is this method better then slayher?? Method?

This is not a method for obtaining root. It's reference material, and also a way to return yourself to stock if you flash a hosed kernel.
If you already have a stock kernel, I am 90% certain that this will do absolutely nothing.
But having a "return to stock kernel" path AND a fresh initramfs are major milestones for development.
You're not at risk, you should be perfectly fine using slayher's method, but if you screw up, this will be a component of your path back to a working phone. But it's only useful if you screw up, you're a kernel developer who wants a clean initramfs for reference, or need to return your phone back to 100% stock. However, if you're in one of those three categories, this is a critical milestone.
This will put stock recovery back on also right?
[Q] Files from a ROM around?
I've asked this before and I should probably shut it, but if anyone has files from a ROM that works with ODIN or a ZIP file (CWM compat or not), root or unrooted (doesn't matter), or a NANDROID backup, could you let me know?
I got stock kernel up, CWM recov, but broke my actual OS- since it broke, I done flashed /data /emmc /system to empty out my stomach. I really just need everything from / (minus your personal data, of course) - can get it to work with a recovery by myself (and can post that up if I do).
Thanks in advance, bruvs.

I think someone needs to post a CWM or Odin flashable stock recovery image. I'm not sure when that's going to happen since we replace it with a custom recovery to get root. I have a feeling we may need to wait until someone releases a custom kernel/system image that is pre rooted. At that point someone with a virgin phone should be able to flash that and pull an image of the stock recovery.
However, I could just be talking out of my ass since I'm not a dev ...

I agree. A Odin that would flash the stock kernel and stock recovery would be very handy incase you need to return the device. I'd worry about returning the phone with a custom recovery and voiding some sort of tmo warranty.
I am also looking for a way to get the original recovery back.. is there a way to do this or will we have to wait?

And how would you go about getting a nandroid backup without the custom cwm recovery? I'm pretty sure nandroid won't backup the recovery partition anyways. This isn't like other devices like the vibrant where recovery is built into the kernel or you just start a custom recovery by loading an update.zip from the stock recovery.

No, looks like that will not put the stock recovery back on so it will be evident in the event of an exchange that it is rooted and the Out of warranty fee will be assessed.

Or is there a way to remove the recovery from the phone that will work too (for an exchange)
This is what's keeping me back from rooting so far. I want to know for sure I can go back to stock before I do anything. Hopefully this will come soon.
I might be exchanging my phone and wonder if they would notice that it was rooted. Kinda want to test everything on this phone and then I will figure out what to do with my new phone. What do you guys think about them finding out??
Ya, I would love to see a way to restore the stock recovery also. I rooted to see if chainfire would help with all of the game crashes that i have been experiencing but it didnt and now I want to restore the stock recovery so that I can do an exchange.
you must have clockworkmod recovery installed before continuing

yes it needs to be in download mode and you need a tar file. It sounds like a bad SD card. Keep the file on your pc. Plenty of rooted and stock tar files around...

Yes only in download mode and you can battery pull if need be just not while flashing and keep it plugged in
Why do I have root and a custom rom (I was running ktoonsez kernel before i did the hard reset) when I hard-reseted my phone?
I'm trying to make my phone like it came out of the box.
With no root or anything. With the original kernel and stuff.
How do I do that?
I don't think hard reset can make your phone look like out of box.You have to flash stock rom with Odin to return to stock.

It looks complicated, I'll see if I need to do it tomorrow because I reset my phone because I was experiencing an issue,
Is there a thread made for the S4 to revert to complete stock? I know I saw one in Android Development, but it said "fix soft brick" or something like that
This thread in the stickies shows how to unroot and how to use odin.

so this is the thread I need to be looking at?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258628
yep is too easy if you read and if you have a doubt read again, follow these steps...good luck
a hard reset does a factory reset too if i'm not mistaken which only wipes /data /cache and dalvik. doesn't touch system or boot which is where the rom and kernel are, respectively. therefore doesnt get rid of root

It is so... not hard, its easier then buttering toast, if you can adjust the sound volume on a pc or navigate a standard windows xp/7 o.s , you can odin a tar file to a galaxy phone .. it takes literally 5 min from dload file time / to flashing finished.
In fact you have the easiest phone to deal with be  thankful not a motorola or htc.

Puting a galaxy any galaxy back to stock requires what wr call removing root and more importantly getting stock 3e recovery back. Its only done by flashing the stock out of the box firmware, otherwise known as a tar.md5 file.
You search in GOOGLE,for
"M919 uvuamdl stock tar. "
Dload it to computer then extract file to desktop or a folder
Next Download odin and open odin,
Connect phone to usb cable to the computer. You will see in odin top left corner a com port when your phones recognized the port will be yellow and say com with a # like com8 for example.
Select pda in Odin, it will direct you to the folder you put the tar file in and select open.
Then click start in Odin. When its done itlll say reset/pass .flashing takes 3-10 minutes on average the s4 takes little longer than older galaxy's used to.
Your all done Back to as STOCK AS YOU CAN GET

Sent you a PM also
As the topic states..
Flashed the latest d2att file.. I couldn't find Paranoid Gapps, so I just used the one for Tasks rom..
Any hints?
Was I supposed to flash anything else? A radio/modem perhaps?
Restored back to CM and all is good there..
Thanks..

You should use the pa gapps.
http://goo.im/devs/paranoidandroid/roms/gapps
Also check that your imei is in tact. If you flashed with cwm it can cause some problems, if you did use twrp.

Flashed PA Gapps from the link you provided, and still no signal. I prefer to stick with CM Recovery.. Can I manually enter the IMEI somewhere?
Thanks...

Only of you backed it up previously.
The dropped cell signal is a cwm pa problem. People switching to twrp has corrected the problem.
Cant force you to change just sussing what works.

Nope. Imei is more complicated than that.
I'm offering you two much easier suggestions than restoring your imei manually.

I appreciate your help.. I still consider myself a novice when It comes to this. What is the procedure for downgrading recoveries?
Thanks again...

Download this
It's an older version of CWM (not too old)
Reboot into recovery, flash the zip, reboot back into recovery and it'll be downgraded.
Try flashing PA again, make sure to nandroid first and do a full wipe.
If you still have no signal flash TWRP recovery
Same instructions and try again.
One of the two should fix your problem.
