Recovery for cm9 - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I have the latest Cm9 alpha 4 flashed and everything is fine. I know I don't have a real recovery so how do I install one that will allow me to backup Cm9 and flash a backup I made on GB?
Thanks in advance.

This is what you are looking for but I am not sure if I would recommend doing a restore back to gb without more research. I am pretty sure a couple people have bricked there phone trying to restore to gb from ics.

if you wanna restore a GB backup you should really just ODIN back to EL29 and use sfhub's auto root package to push CWM to your phone. after that its safe to do the restore.

mobile odin
I recommend mobile odin. Well worth the $. It's very easy to use and helpful if you don't want the hassle of using your computer.

The easiest way would be to flash a working recovery using Mobile Odin and then boot into your recovery and backup/restore. To do this, download a ODIN version of the recovery you need. It will come in the form of a .tar file most likely. From there, open Mobile Odin, find your .tar file, click it, and then flash. Then you should be able to boot into recovery using Vol Up and Power. This is handy if you are flashing some of the most current ICS roms that dont have recovery's built in yet. Just make sure that you flash a recovery that will work with your existing setup (kernel, rom...etc).
PS, if you find this helpful, please click the "Thanks" button. I normally wouldn't ask but would like to post to some Dev threads and need a better "score". Thanks!

FYI, this is the recovery you want if you are on any ICS rom.

I haven't had any issues yet but I have heard of people who have. I agree, the best way is to odin back to stock, then cwm kernel, then restore. Best thing is that it is easy to do with Mobile Odin.

Mobile odin is the same thing as the PC version and is good to have when you dont have access to a computer.

Steady and sfhub said they think it's the ics kernels that are doing it ...something about how they handle the data partition a little different ....better to be safe and I use mobile odin pro all the time ....love that it keeps itself and gives root on stock makes it much easier ... Triangle away well reset the odin count but only in ics roms but use that and mobile odin answer never have triangle or up your count

You need to odin a recovery with it baked in. You only need to do this if you are wanting to leave MIUI. For now the kernel that comes bundled in the ROM doesn't have the recovery you want.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
CWM is not included in the rom for your protection. If you need to do any flashing you can use autoroot to flash el26cwm. When it reboots besure to hold the volume up and power keys to get into recovery as flashing the gingerbread kernel will cause your phone not to boot back into the rom since it's an ICS ROM. At the moment using any type of custom recovery in ICS is not recommended thus why the developers have taken it out due to all the bricking issues.
COOL COOL i just like to back up my roms..im on xplod mini 2.0 using rougue_ET-1.4.0-GUNSLINGER and its works an this is a ics rom...just a heads up
Please what ever you do I would avoid to do any wiping or restoring while in an ICS recovery/kernel. Please note also even the the gunslinger thread, its advised not to do any type of flashing *on ICS builds* Backing up might be ok, but nonetheless take your time and try to read as much as possible, there's numerous thread posted by others who have asked a similar question and has been answered.

you can mobile Odin el26. then reboot right into recovery.
easiest and safest way.
but you will have to reflash a kernel or rom in order to boot back up after you done in recovery.

"Be sure" when you flash el26 cwm 5.0.2.7 that just after boot, when first Samsung screen appears, start to hold power and volume up.. Otherwise you will have issues.. This is a gingerbread kernel and isn't made to run on ics, but does work as long as you follow those exact instructions.. I always just keep a copy of the el26 cwm tar on my sdcard and use mobile odin to flash it when I leave a rom.... It's fastest way to do this... Here is cwm el26 tar. Use either pc odin 1.85 or mobile odin to flash..

How to go back to Gingerbread?

I have been reading a few posts, and have been having a TON of problems with ICS, so I am going to go back to Gingerbread MIUI. Can someone please verify how I should do that?
I know I have to Odin el26 with CWM, but can I then just flash another ROM or do I have to do a full wipe (restore to stock via Odin) and then work my way from there?
Thank you in advance.

This works, as does the other methods I have read on here up until this point. This is personally how I do it. I odin EL26 CWM (no reboot option) then I yank the battery and turn back on going into CWM before phone boots. Once there, wipe everything and then restore nandroid backup. I have done this several times coming back to GB off of several ICS ROMS including MIUI4.
BTW, this will result yellow triangle from just using ODIN for the CWM file. I have a jig, so don't care. That triangleaway program might work also, but I haven't used it. If you don't care about the yellow triangle, then no matter.

Right, and no triangle problem with your choice either.
OK guys thanks for the replies. I do have a backup of a GB ROM. I am probably just going to Odin the el26 with CWM and just wipe and flash my GB ROM over again. I don't really care about the triangle, I just don't want to go through the hassel of flashing this, then Odin that to get CWM.
Or I can just do one Odin, get CWM, then flash from an ICS ROM to a GB ROM, thats probably the way I'm gonna go.

[Q] Frankenstein Ego

I flashed this rom and kept my EL29 kernel. Does that mean in order to get this Rom and get my CWM recovery back I have to reset my phone to stock and start all over again with the EL26? Also, is the swype keyboard in the rapps, and how do i get the face unlock to work?
When you flashed Frankenstein rom, your kernel changed to the FE21 kernel included with the rom so not sure what you mean by you kept el29 kernel since that's not compatible with ICS. The reason you have stock android recovery now is because of all the bricking issues performing certain functions in custom ICS recovery so devs are leaving out custom recovery from their roms. So yes, when you want to change roms, backup, etc., you must go back to the el26 cwm kernel first and flash, backup, etc. from there. Not sure about your last two questions since I'm not using that rom. Let me know if you need anything else.

Not to sure what you mean by that. If you're saying what I think you're saying, yes you must use el26 cwm kernel whenever flashing anything ICS related or backing up or restoring. Using anything else and you risk bricking your phone.

Slick_rick is correct, as far as Swype i just sign up for the Swype beta from you phone browser to get a download for it, that way i always have it to restore with titanium so i can get Swype on any rom. There's also some Swype keyboards floating around in the app section but i haven't tried them. They should work though.

Wow... I needed this thread. I just recently went through what I thought were all the instructions to flash this rom. I had previously used the PD Odin executable routine to upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS. I saw the reviews on this rom and really liked what I saw. I used Odin 1.85 to set up CWM-El26 so I could flash this ROM. I got everything working ( I do get that yellow triangle on reboots) but I did notice the CWMod Recovery does not stay on the phone. It reverts back to the basic ICS Recovery (where I GUESS you cannot flash zip files). Now all this said... After flashing this ROM, I am still on FE16. Is there something else I am missing.
I got into rooting when I had my Dinosaur Moment, and now I have that itch again. Thanks again for all your help!

Swype is in the removed apps. You have to Unknown Sources checked under device administration. You can mount your phone, add the swype.apk file to the phone, and install it using the astro file manager. I still go back and forth between swype and the stock ICS keyboard. Word prediction seems to work better in the stock.

Oh well your cwm recovery disappeared because it wasnt packed into the kernel that came with the rom you flashed. And you can get rid of the yellow triangle using a USB jig or an app called triangle away. Just Google search something like "triangle away apk+chainfire+xda" and you should be able to find it.

Need help

I have the TMobile Galaxy s3 rooted on most recent stock firmware. I installed a new font using rom toolbox after backing up firmware with TWRP, so it though. After installing the font I got a message telling me to reboot for changes to take effect. Reboot hangs at the glowing Samsung logo. I have rebooted in to recovery and it comes up with CWM recovery vice TWRP some how? I know I flashed TWRP through rom toolbox but it didn't take apparently. I did get a message that backup was successful. CWM will not recognize TWRP backup. I need a flashable zip for the correct TWRP recovery. Could someone please point me in the right direction for the TWRP recovery file or to get me out of this boot loop. Should I just flash the stock firmware?

Get in recovery and make a nandroid backup. You can also use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps and data. You'll have to made a copy of those files on your pc to get them back once your phone is back.
You'll have to reset the flash counter (while you're rooted), flash stock firmware with Odin (can be found in the Dev section) and factory reset in recovery.
Also, backup your pics and such (DCIM folder) to your pc if you wanna keep them.
Last thing, take time to search next time it has been covered quite a few times.

Good point. I'll add to this though, he can use mobile Odin to flash to stock if his micro usb port isn't working well enough.

Hey thank you guys! I haven't started this yet but when i tried to use mobile odin to flash to stock, my phone would bootloop. Do you think that will happen again if i try this? Is it mobile odin or?
Depends really on several factors. Are you able to get into stock recovery and do a factory reset in there ? Sometimes helps after flashing stock in odin

Hednik is right. If you've accomplished a successful odin flash (no errors) go ahead and wipe data/cache in recovery. After flashing stock in odin, it is common for phones to bootloop or stick at the samsung logo. A wipe usually resolves this

When im in the bootloop I have no stock recovery! Like if i held my home and up volume it would do nothing but bootloop
& This will take me from cm10 to stock correct?
If in a bootloop pull the battery and try to get into recovery. I guess I am confused...are you still on CM10 ? Have to flashed stock recovery yet ?
You said you microUSB port does work so getting download mode might be an issue but it you bootloop you should be able to get into stock recovery. Tell us that you have done already so far and where you are
Alright I'm still on cm10. I've tried to flash stock rom before but it put me in a boot loop and I couldn't get into stock recovery. Am I supposed to install stock recovery? I'm really lost. I'm sorry

Here is a link for recovery flasable stock firmware. Flash it the same way you flashed CM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2161667
Edit, didn't see someone already posted thus. Flash that triangle away unroot then make sure to clean up all your files from the root of your SD card or any files that might suggest you've modified the device and you should be good to go.

I've never used mobile Odin so I'm not sure. If that's how you flashed CyanogenMod then yes.
