CM7 Port - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I'm going to attempt to port CM7 to our T989's. I've never started a port from scratch but worked on some Android->WM ports in the past.
From what I've read, it looks like the best way to port to a new device is to start with generic CM7 source and add our stock kernel. Then check what works and fix what's broken one step at a time.
If there are any expert devs out there that would be willing to lend a hand I would be grateful. If anyone knows a better method of porting, please let me know.
This is low priority with my current workload and a new baby at home but I enjoy learning.

Thats pretty much how I've ported themes in the past. I'll be happy to test for you

Nice to see people wanting to step up. Honestly though, im pretty sure CM7 is being worked on by very experienced devs. Spend time with your baby

Well I'll keep compiling but I'll keep the testing to myself... I doubt I'll have anything better than the experienced devs.

Probably not, these are new age modders who think just because they have a certain device it should come with all bells and whistles that take a good 6 months to develope. Did I mention they want it now!!!

Well, devs are staying behind because we are all starting to see how the game is going. Too many Android phones are coming out at once and money ain't coming any faster. I'm sure if people paid devs to come dev for the device, we'd have more devs...so if you want to pay for someone's E4GT, go right on ahead. If you don't want to, just wait it out. This phone is already pretty sweet and the problems we do have, a dev probably won't be able to fix those..so..yeah.
This phone is sick dude, just enjoy it and be happy that you don't own a device where you have to depend on the devs just to be able to get through the day.
Having it from release date, the OG Epic did NOT have terrible development. Just not the development some people wanted. And there were "some" people who were ungrateful and rude, like with any device. This one already has great developers, and we are slowly getting more. Be patient.

The Epic scene was pretty good. A lot of people came from that Evo...smh, the Evo messed the whole game up if ya ask me. Now people willl sit around and say their phone is garbage if it doesn't have the same dev scene that the Evo had.
Little do most people know that the Evo was damn near the same device as the Desire, N1 and Dinc. So most of the reason why its scene was so great was because a dev from any one of those phones could just port their roms over and all they had to do was swap out the hardware files and the kernel. Other than those 2 things, everything was damn near exactly the same.
Yeah I think we just have to be patience

I've seen a few well known devs from the HTC Evo post here, so I'm pretty optimistic.

what do we really need here? cyanogen and miui and stock roms. that is asking alot but that would be epic. for now i am loving starburst. love asop but don't remove touchwiz launcher and widgets. just my opinion.
I had the First Epic and the Dev's there were GREAT. We may not have had as many as some phones like the Evo but the ones we had did great work and who needs 100 roms to choose from when the ones we had did the trick. We had some great Roms and Themes and the fixes came pretty fast.
I have not rooted this phone yet mainly because I have not felt the need. The only thing I am missing is WiFi Tether. I am sure when this LOS gets worked out and the devs get their hands on the original source we will see much more. I am grateful for anyone that helps make this phone better, but it is pretty dang good out of the box. The best I have ever had.
Where did u hear that from

Now?? pffft what are you talking about? They want that **** out on launch day! wtf you slacking devs that dont get paid and do this all for free?? Get back in the sweatshop and do work that requires more thinking than a sweatshop worker in china but gets "paid"(donations) less! These devs should worship us and do what we tell them when we tell them! When a phone is released that very day we expect EVERY MOD imaginable, every "bell and whistle" and a choice of at least 10 roms and 10 kernels..

sense is pretty hard to get working on a non HTC phone. I dont think I've ever heard of a sense rom (that fully worked right) ported over to a non htc phone(at least that I know of). It's not impossible(from what I hear) but it is very very very difficult(so I hear)

[REQ] Can someone Kang us a Gummy?!

i was looking for new roms for my girl's droid 2 global on rootzwiki the other day and found out about these AOSP ICS Gummy Roms. They're made by a pretty reputable team that includes JRummy (maker of the best root app Rom Toolbox) and they seem to piece together the best parts of AOKP, CM9, and MIUI, so I became very interested in getting this ****.
Maybe I'm just out of the loop and it's really popular, but I've seen nothing about it here. Anyway, since they have pretty up-to-date ROMs for the NS4G and more-so the Fascinate, I thought maybe we could get a working version? And I know how epic devs love to give us as many ICS Rom options as possible...
here's the link to the forum that has all the newest Gummy ROM releases - http://rootzwiki.com/forum/406-releases/
Looks cool even the name makes me wanna have it lol I saw its available for the fascinate so that should help.

You still cherry-pick the cm team (kang) if from source. My kernel is mostly "kanged " from Ezekeel and Team Glitch and it is built from source.

Hmmm..so I got it running on the droid global. 1st thing you notice? Bootup sound is possibly the most irritating thing I've ever heard in my life. The rom itself is pretty solid though. Very quick..much snappier than aokp on the global. However, customization is not as thorough as I expected. There's actually LESS customizable features than on standard aokp or cm9 w/ reloaded mod..though it DOES have a Wimax toggle, which is cool (but weird since the global does not have wimax), and a few things you can't do on cm9 or aokp. All in all id say it might be worth checking out on the epic since it really is pretty quick and has a wimax toggle, but besides that, little is different from other ics roms.

If you guys want to run this ROM, you can just copy app and framework from it to cm9 from the fascinate version. However, if you want to not piss off the cm team, it'd probably be best not to release it, since its pretty much stealing their ROM. And don't bite the hand that feeds you.

isn't that what "open source" is all about? encouraging "stealing" essentially? no one is making money off of "stealing" cm's work or taking money away from the cm team...i don't get it. all this would do is further the experience and provde more options to epic owners.

I agree with you completely on this. Its the point of open source. Just based on my experiences on porting miui, some of their devs are not too keen on the idea of us copying their files in winzip. Just trying to save you from some of the drama I've faced.

It's not all of them, just a select few. Some are very nice and helpful, like UberPinguin and mkasick.
Open source means open source. Everyone (even including the cm team) needs to realize this and get over it. The cm team, or any other dev are by no means required to do this work, as they don't get paid for it. People are not required to pay them for their work, but choose to through donations sometimes. The starters of cm don't whine about people kanging their rom to try to get it working on other devices. It's what we did at first before our cm team was even officially part of cm. No one seems to mind borrowing bits and pieces from other devices, or damn near everything from a source of one original dev who created this and shared it openly, with all, with absolutely no complaints or ****s to give. Just because they've put in so much work on it, they do not own it, and they never have. The only thing that matters is showing respect. Credit to our cm team for porting most/almost all of this, but not without help from many other sources, and the original and also huge contribution from those who started the cm project and have been so selfless and sharing with it.
The point of open source is to not care. To share everything we have freely so that "anything" that is possible can be done. If someone wants to change a framework and some apps, add in some scripts and kernel tweaks, or a custom kernel, call it a rom and release it, they are allowed. That is what every rom before now has been. Android with Samsung's code, with tweaks. No one before now has built an OS for our device completely from the ground up. Everyone acts more high and mighty than they are. The only difference here is that instead of it being the stock software, it's software someone else built, our device's team ported, and now tries to lay claim over.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk 2
I must agree. If some cm team (god love them) members want to cause a ruckus over people sharing with open source, then switch over to improving iphones and their closed source.

ok now back to the topic...any rebels wana take a crack at gummy and post it??
So to go back off topic and throw my two cents in.
I think its more of them wanting people to learn to do it the proper way.
Marcus, for example, did this with MIUI and has continued to do so for a while.
He is rather young just yet, and has a TON of potential to get in and learn the real code.
Smali is machine code. Smali is rather hard to explain, read, and visualize.
Kanging by winzip is damn easy file coping. But if you run into bugs, how do you fix it?
Smali code editing? Copy DIFFERENT files over? That's quite impossible and is harder than it needs to be.
The CM9 Devs, I'm sure, do not give a rats ass what you do with their official .zips.
What they do care about is learning and growing the community.
I feel they gave you both, Marcus and xBox, a hard time because they want you to learn the correct tools and the proper process... Not for them, but for the community and yourselves.
You both get into learning C++, Java, etc... You both will make outstanding Devs. You'll help yourselves, the CM9 team, and the community.
That's my opinion. If its totally off base, oh well. I am not speaking for the team. This has not been discussed with me. I have merely been reading what's been available on the forums. Take it or leave it... They want you to learn

Not trying to be a d*ck, just being honest. I wouldn't want you to spend your time working on a rom that nobody is going to use.

to kind of continue this response and if you've never done a rom, you may be better off pulling the aokp or cm code and working on killing some bugs first. i'm sure there is plenty to work on. or maybe just do a kernel for one of those (i don't think there is a single oc kernel for either yet).

A guide for making custom ROMS

Hey all,
Since I still have ages till I go back to university I was thinking of starting to make my own custom roms to share with the xda community as a part time thing. But what I wanted to know is what are the requirements for this, do you need to have good skills in software programming or can anyone make their own roms with little or no experience in programming at all. As for me I do have some knowledge and experience in Java and C as it was part of my degree for the first two years but i wouldn't say i'm an expert just good enough i guess lol. So is there like a guide or something out there which would help newbies like me to get on the right path of making custom roms. I dont want to start off big just something basic like a rom that has smooth performance and good battery life and once i get the jist of things i'll step it up a level and allow the user to tweak their rom like the viper roms and what not and just build it up from there.
Many thanks.

I think a lot of pressure was for us to get jelly bean. We got it and things calmed down. We still have development. But, this device just isn't in enough hands. When CM get finished that should give us a pretty stable foundation for other popular AOSP roms. So, at this point that seems to be what is the most important milestone. I don't know how that is progressing though.

I'm really glad the first response wasn't a "hey stop asking, flame flame flame."
But yeah, I feel the same. The camera and other fixes in CM will make it stable and people will build on top of that. Why bother making new ROMs if your old ones are good and why build on CM if the camera (a pretty popular use of smartphones nowadays) isn't working?

What's needed most is themes. Good, full themes. I would kill to see somebody port Myn's Warm over to the LGOG. I'm sure somebody would like to see a TW or the new Moto look as well. Nobody has even bothered to mod any of the theme apks that come built in to the LG software. It may not be CM theme manager level of awesome but our phones does have a theme manager built in.
Except for base ROMs like AOSP/CM there really isn't a reason for new ROMs. To be honest, Imperium Initiative isn't even a ROM, I simply released it as one because I was feeling lazy and didn't want to write the script for it. If I had, it only would have been around a 50-60MB DL.

I'm content with what we have for the moment. And I've been poking around with some files myself trying to get features we should have (QSlide apps) working and other things of interest.
What languages/scripts and what do you guys make/bake and mod/theme Roms with and in? I know just some of the stepping stones, but have lots of time to learn. With a bit of self study I don't see myself being able to make roms, but surely theming/modding.
can anybody port iOS? Totally kidding.
I'm looking forward to what is coming, but at the same time, we do have some very good, stable ROMs. Something that can be said for our device that cannot be said for many others is that all of our ROMs that are not in testing are stable. Quality before quantity and all that. I was looking through the GS3 forums for a friend yesterday and they have so many options you simply could not possibly know what is good and what is not without reading pages upon pages of posts. It was awful!
Anyway, I think it's a valid question but from my POV I'm pretty happy with where we are at.
Plus, the roms we have are their own build your own rom kits. The possibilities are pretty endless.

Even if someone could get it fully working, they couldn't release it because Apple would sue their ass.

Apple wouldn't have a leg to stand on if they hadn't patented that extremely unique rectangular shape

A lot of our devs also have some major stuff going on with personal life too.... New jobs, new kids, etc. Congrats to all, btw.

I definitely would like to see our theme manager utilized. Even if we had an inverted stock theme. All the menus are so damn bright, wouldn't mind seeing a dark theme. Maybe a blue theme... I just think for a device of this caliber we should have more.

Ahhh yes!! Myn's roms were the most beautiful and elegant I've ever used. I had the OG Evo and the Evo 3D and his work was always top notch. Donated to him more than anyone else. I would love to see his work on the Optimus G.

Yeah they are beautiful. Especially on non HTC devices such as the epic. It was glorious.
